Cheri703So I reinstalled 10.04 a week or two ago, and I put /home on a separate partition. In the last few days, I've been having some WEIRD stuff happening, seemingly without cause. Could having the separate partition be the problem? should I reinstall again? should I use 10.10 (tried an upgrade and had lots of issues, haven't tried a full reinstall of it yet)17:40
paultagwhat's been going on Cheri703?17:41
aveilleuxCheri703, Using a separate /home partition, unless the mount points are really borked up, shouldn't cause any problems.17:41
Cheri703well, yesterday it did something where I was using it, and then it blanked the screen and said "running in low resolution mode" or something17:41
paultagsounds like X11 Cheri70317:42
paultagCheri703: what's your video driver? Did you make hardware changes?17:42
Cheri703today I plugged in my 20" monitor for the first time since reinstall, and it's not giving me proper resolution options17:42
Cheri703same netbook17:42
paultagCheri703: which netbook did you get, again?17:42
Cheri703I used ctrl-alt-bksp a few times recently17:42
Cheri703zareason teo17:42
paultagCheri703: Oh wow, so that should be good to go17:42
Cheri703so should be cozy with ubuntu from a hardware sense17:43
Cheri703yeah17:43
paultagCheri703: hummm. Intel?17:43
Cheri703I think so17:43
Cheri703yeah17:43
paultagCheri703: yeah a /home on another partitition can't cause this kind of failure17:43
Cheri703ok17:43
paultagCheri703: so something else odd is going on17:43
Cheri703I didn't think so...17:43
Cheri703though, even with the stupid resolution, it's pretty freaking sweet to be able to use 3 monitors, one of which is connected to a different computer (woo synergy!)17:44
paultagCheri703: Cheri703 :)17:44
Cheri703they're all (basically) in a row :)17:44
Cheri703except one is across the room17:44
Cheri703so what options do I have paultag? do I reinstall? reinstall x11?17:45
Cheri703deal with 4:3 resolution on a 16:10 monitor?17:45
paultagCheri703: Well, it's an issue with the driver17:45
paultagCheri703: so try upgrading the driver. See if you can upgrade off -M or -N for Lucid17:46
Cheri703I don't know what that means17:46
Cheri703:/17:46
Cheri703the thing is, it worked the last time I was using lucid (i.e. before the craptastic upgrade)17:47
Cheri703and subsequent reinstall17:47
paultagCheri703: hummmm17:47
Cheri703:/17:47
Cheri703it's never good when I stump the paultag17:47
paultaghaha17:47
paultagCheri703: X11 needs a stern kick in the ass17:48
Cheri703basically17:48
Cheri703so should I reinstall it? or? is there a way to reset it or something?17:48
paultagCheri703: you used to be able to dpkg-reconfigure17:48
Cheri703I came across that17:49
UndiFineDdpkg-reconfigure unimatrix017:49
paultagCheri703: I don't know how to do it now, I have nvidia, so I use that tool17:49
Cheri703:/17:49
Cheri703UndiFineD: will that do what I'm looking for?17:49
UndiFineDno17:49
Cheri703ok17:50
UndiFineDbut maybe it does what paultag wants to do17:50
paultagCheri703: I don't think a reinstall will do it, either, just FYI17:52
Cheri703:(17:52
Cheri703ok17:52
paultagCheri703: and I think the xorg.conf file has been moved out17:52
paultagso I don't think that can be edited by hand anymore17:52
Cheri703I'm just now getting some of my little preferences change/set up from the last reinstall, so having to reinstall AGAIN is not really looking like a happy thing to me atm17:53
Cheri703though, I guess I could try 10.10 again...I dunno, so far I've been less than impressed by it17:53
paultagCheri703: I'd not do it17:53
Cheri703not do 10.10 or not do a reinstall again?17:54
paultagCheri703: I doubt it fixes the issue. You should look into ways to add new resolutions to the xorg conf in lucid for an intel driven device17:54
paultagCheri703: neither, stick with the current install, it can be saved :)17:54
Cheri703ok17:54
Cheri703this looks vaguely accurate, but is basically gibberish to me: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=150506117:55
Cheri703*vaguely relevant17:55
paultagyeah the xorg.conf is quite old Cheri70317:57
paultagCheri703: I don't know if it will work17:57
Cheri703ok17:57
paultagCheri703: try a sudo  Xorg -configure17:57

Cheri703paultag: how do I get to "without x"18:05
paultagCheri703: sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop18:06
Cheri703ok, thanks18:06
paultagCheri703: that will kill your session18:06
* Cheri703 is still learning piece by piece18:06
paultagCheri703: so beware18:06

paultagtell Cherri I'll be back late :)18:07
paultaglater all18:07
Cheri703that didn't do what I think it should have done18:12
Cheri703it did basically a shut down process and just sat there with a cursor18:12
Cheri703(also I hate 10.10 on my desktop, but that's a side issue)18:13
yofelsudo gdm stop will kill your X session so you'll have to change to a TTY with ctrl+alt+f2 for example to login18:13
Cheri703ah, ok18:13
Cheri703that was the part I didn't know :/18:13
Cheri703will try again18:14
yofel*sudo service gdm stop18:14
Cheri703back in a bit18:14
trhisdonewhen i log on to ubuntu the usb drives show up on the desktop then mounted drives show up... how do i stop these drives from showing up on the desktop?18:16
aveilleuxtrhisdone, http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/ubuntu/hide-removable-drive-icons-from-your-ubuntu-desktop/18:16
Cheri703so...it ran the configure, but nothing is different now...still don't have the resolution options I should have18:16
trhisdonethanks aveilleux....perfect fix.....now when i reboot will they still be gone?18:19
yofelCheri703: that should create a default xorg.conf somewhere (in your home folder I think) that you can then copy to /etc/X11/xorg.conf and edit it like you want to (if I remember correctly, haven't used that in a long time)18:19
Cheri703ok18:19
Cheri703thanks18:19

Cheri703heh18:31

trhisdonei wouldn't do it again18:32
Cheri703brb18:35
Cheri703I have to say, I'm very annoyed at ubuntu today19:06
Cheri703I tried various things, and some worked as a temporary solution, and the "more permanent fix" I found didn't work at all :( I just don't understand why ubuntu could automatically recognize the correct resolutions for this monitor before, and can't now. I don't want to have to "rig" it to work :(19:08

Cheri703so I guess I'll ask about my other issue I've got going on: on my desktop, I have an ATI Radeon 9200 (it's an older card), and if I use any kernel that is a 2.6.35 (vs 32), it blacks out and has NO video. Unless a new version was released in the last few weeks, I have the most up to date radeon driver. I'd like to be able to run the newer kernel, but...can't. Anyone have any thoughts?19:20
bobo123how do I do in ubuntu to uncompress a tar-archive where the filenames is not utf8 but instead normal latin1?19:31
evfoolhi all19:35
tomtom354I suspect a DVD drive is hanging shutdown.  how to i temporarily disable it for diagnostic reasons?19:55
=== karthick87 is now known as Guest24383
bobo123hi evfool20:17
bobo123do you know how to extract the files from a iso8859-1 .tar archive to ubuntu?20:18
yofelbobo123: where exactly doesn't it want to behave as for utf8?20:19
bobo123yofel: the tar-file is created on another computer that uses latin1. When I try to uncompress is in ubuntu that sorry to say uses utf8 it insist in thinking the filenames is encoded in uft8 so when it finds a file named "skåne.txt" it gives up saying "ån" is not an utf8-character20:24
Dazza71hi can anyone help me install my brother printer20:24
yofelbobo123: is that file roller or the command line? (tried the latter?)20:24
bioterrorDazza71, exact model is neede20:25
bioterrord20:25
Dazza71dcp 120c20:25
bobo123what I want is to specify that the tar-files filenames are not utf8-encoded.20:25
bioterrorwhen I migrated from FreeBSD to OS X (iso-8859-1 -> utf-8) I used FTP for file transfer20:25
bobo123yes I have tried both the filemanager, and running   tar xvfz myfile.tgz20:25
=== Guest24383 is now known as karthick87
bobo123bioterror: in this case I can't send the tar-archive to some latin1-using computer and expand it there and then ftp the files back to here.20:29
bioterrorthat really sounds weird20:30
bioterrorDazza71, http://www.butterscotch.com/tutorial/How-To-Set-Up-A-Printer-In-Ubuntu this doesnt work?20:31
bobo123yeah and note, I don't want to change the contents of the files, only want the correct filenames.20:35
bioterrorbobo123, you cant download those files from another computer with ftp or scp?20:36
bioterroryou have to  extract that tar ball?20:36
bobo123I assume that tar can't specify in the archive-file in what encoding the file names are so there is no way for ubuntus tar to know, but that don't make it correct for ubuntus tar to assume that all tar-files people want to uncompress is allways utf8 - there must be some way to tell tar that this particular tar-file comes from a latin1-system så the filenames are encoded in latin1.20:38
bobo123bioterror: I have the tar-file here. I don't have access to another computer. the tar file is backup made on another computer that I have no access to anymore.20:39
bioterrordarn :)20:40
bobo123besides, I don't think there is a way to instruct ubuntus filemanager that the site you ftp to i using latin1 for its filenames.... I bet ubuntu tries to understand then as utf8  :-/20:41
bioterrorbobo123, gotta think20:41
Cheri703I have a separate /home partition, better to completely wipe it and start fresh, or just reinstall with existing data?20:43
Cheri703if I am reinstalling with basically the same version of ubuntu20:43
bioterrorwhy?20:44
Cheri703why what?20:44
bioterrorwhy you're reinstalling20:44
bioterroris there a reason20:44
Cheri703well, I'm actually reinstalling on both computers, but this one is because I'm having x issues, (and a few other ones hanging around) and I want to have a clean install (again -_- )20:45
Cheri703I could move everything off to an external hdd and then put things back on as I go, but will putting back on a .program folder mess with things?20:46
bioterrorif you dont have anything important, wipe it all20:46
Cheri703k20:46
bioterrorbobo123, I think your answer is: pax20:47
bioterrorbobo123, http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=12177202 some hint from there20:54
bobo123bioterror: ok I look into that too. But I tried to uncompress it with 7zip now and it seems to work.20:55
bobo123I have not checked everything yet but 7z didn't give me any error messages anyway :-)20:55
bioterrorgood20:55
bobo123Cheri703: you could of course keep the home-partition (assuming there are no faults in the filesystem itself) and just choose a different username for your new installation20:57
GuestI'm installing Ubuntu 10.10 for desktop on the family computer. It's currently only wireless through a USB adapter. Will that be okay for installation out of the box or will I need to use a wired connection?21:10
yofelGuest: wired is recommended, but wireless worked fine for me21:11
GuestI only ask because when I was in the try it version, it didn't seem to detect any wireless usb adapters.21:12
GuestYeah, I think I will try wired then just to be safe. Thanks!21:12
