BookmanIs there a 'find' a file command?  I don't see one in the file manager, or in any of the menus.04:02
stlsaintBookman: use the locate command04:03
stlsaintBookman: locate <file_name>04:03
Bookmanand locate <filename> searches just the current directory?04:07
stlsaintBookman: nope, it will search system to find file04:08
Bookmanall directories?04:08
stlsaintBookman: yes04:08
stlsaintBookman: well at least the ones in the /home/user directory04:09
Bookmanhmmm, not sure if I have it working properly then.04:10
BookmanIt does not seem to find files in my Downloads directory04:13
phillwBookman: there is also a more sledgehammer and nut approach, using find and grep. But as stlsaint states locate should find a file regardless of the directory it is in.04:13
Bookmanhmmm04:14
stlsaintBookman: test it, go to dir, make a blank file titled test or something then use locate command on file from another dir04:14
BookmanIt does not seem to find things in my 'Downloads' directory.04:14
phillwBookman: as you are running a journalled filesystem locate should find it no problems.04:15
Bookmanhmm, not sure what is going wrong then.04:15
stlsaintBookman: what errors are you getting?04:16
BookmanNo errors, no returns though.04:16
Bookmaninfo says it uses /var/cache/locate/locatedb04:16
phillwBookman: If when you do an ls in Downloads, the file should be there, unless you have your download area set to a different area?04:16
Bookmanfiles show up using ls in downloads, but locate does not see them04:16
stlsaintBookman: paste the commands from your terminal you are using04:17
Bookmanlocate filenam*04:17
phillwjournalling is a low priority task, it can take a while for locate to have the database built.04:18
BookmanI am just searching for any file I know to exist in the Downloads directory at the moment04:18
BookmanIt returns nothing immediately04:18
phillwBookman: From the Download directory, issue04:18
phillwfind . | grep filename04:18
Bookmanphillw, that works just fine.04:19
* phillw is a fan of find :D04:19
Bookmanhmm, I used find . | grep XP* and it returned results.04:20
Bookmanin the same directory I used locate XP* and got zero back04:20
phillwBookman: find does hammer the computer, so I always try locate 1st. if that fails then I use find04:21
BookmanGotta keep sharpening my skillset04:21
BookmanI guess maybe the locate command does not always work?  Is there a way to update the database?04:22
phillwBookman: that's why we are here, to help :)04:22
phillwBookman: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=91296504:24
phillwBookman: that has the instruction to update the database, and a brief introduction to find.04:25
BookmanThanks yet again!04:25
phillwBookman: I've just learned it only updates every 24 hours from reading that thread :P We learn something new every day :)04:29
BookmanGotta keep learning.04:29
BookmanBut running updatedb works and didn't take long for my small hard drive.04:31
Bookmanlocate now finds everything.04:31
BookmanBut only in my /home/usr directory04:32
bitrottedso about this lubuntu-10.10 i'm slurping down05:16
bitrottedis this lubuntu thing going anywhere?05:17
bitrottedseems to at least be current05:17

bitrottedjust kinda wondering if the idea was to merge back cause forks normall sucks05:17
stlsaintbitrotted: is it going anywhere? o_O05:17
bitrottedsporks are cool05:17
bitrottedlike spoons that grow points but then decide thats enough and still supported primarily by the spoon05:18
phillwbitrotted: lubuntu is aiming for full adoption, Canonical are writing the rules up, but lubuntu is considered across all teams as if it were fully adopted.05:18
bitrottedi mean suppose i like lubuntu - in a month or 3 months or 6 months whats the store going to be like05:18
bitrottedcool05:19
bitrottedso its like some red tape05:19
bitrottedso it gets all same update mechanisms and such?05:19
bitrottedall those are gotten from upstream in orderly and timely fashion05:19
bitrottedseems like a sweet idea05:20
bitrottedi havent seen lxde05:20
bitrottedbut i'm all abut lightweight05:20

bioterrorwhat?13:09
bioterroryou mean LOCK  your screen?13:09
bioterrorlike in windows win+l13:09
quadrisprono, "Lockdown is the mechanism which is used to bar users using a computing environnment from performing certain actions" (via http://library.gnome.org/admin/deployment-guide/)13:10
quadrisproso, for instance13:10
quadrisproI'd like to prevent users to customize the panel13:10
quadrisproadd launcher, open terminal windows etc13:11
quadrisproI'm asking there 'cause I didn't find anything on the Internet :/13:11
bioterroryou want kiosk settings?13:12
quadrisprosomething like a kiosk-mode would be a good beginning13:13
bioterrormaybe disable right mouse?-)13:13
quadrisprono, it's unnecessary, I would like to: 1) disallow users to open terminals 2) disallows users to add stuff to the panel 3) ...13:17
quadrispro3) no alt+f213:18
* hyperair wonders what the point of disabling terminals and custom commands is13:18
hyperairit doesn't make the system any more secure.13:18
* quadrispro on phone13:19
quadrisprowell, I'm back13:39

quadrisprolet me elaborate better :)13:42
quadrisproI'm working on custom ubuntu CDs which will be installed in big office environment13:43
quadrisproand employers should not be able to customize panels, get information about the system or access to the shell (only one tty will be available - the current one)13:44
quadrisprohyperair, GNOME allows the lockdown through a bunch of GConf options13:46
hyperairi see.13:46
hyperairyeah i recall something like that.13:46
hyperairfor gnome, that is13:46
hyperairnot for lxde13:46
quadrisprooh... :(13:46
hyperairbut i'm not an LXDE user13:47

phillwthere is a potential problem with wired networks, but that should only affect those using the mini-iso install. If after trying that method you are still having problems ask & I will post up the link for when wired networks are un-mananged.17:02
nitrohaxok. before it wouldn't connect at all so i was using sudo ifconfig eth0 up && sudo dhclient eth017:04
phillwnitrohax: the link for un-managed wired networks is at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/DocumentationHelp/MinimalInstall#Unmanaged%20Wired%20Network But I'd suggest you try the install as per the instructions on the 1st link I gave you.17:04
