Humpelhi there10:02
Humpel i just installed ubuntu studio 10.10, but I cannot connect any usb midi device within jack10:02
Humpele.g. I plug in a Keystation 49, or a midisport 2*4. They show up in Jack connections, but I cannot connect them to anything10:03
Humpelsoftware synth (qsynth) is worling fine, virtual keyboard too.10:03
Humpelany idea ?? Do i need special rights for be able to connect things on usb-midi ?10:03
Humpelcannot connect them to anything = i select midi input (e.g. the Keystation) and output (e.g. qsynth) and click on connect, but nothing happens10:05
holsteinhey Humpel13:53
holsteinjust double check your connections13:53
holsteinyou might need to make audio connections13:53
holsteinin my experience13:53
holsteingoing to JACK213:53
holsteinsome things changed in there13:53
holstein*in JACK connect13:54
holsteinand i use a package called a2jmidid13:54
Humpelwell.. audio works fine when using virt. Keyboard and qsynth13:54
holsteinto connect my keystation 49 to synths13:54
holsteininteresting13:55
holsteinim not using 10.10 myself13:55
Humpelit is just I cannot connect any usb-midi thing. they all show up, but I just can't connect anything to it13:55
holsteinim using 10.04 with falktx's PPA (from KXstudio)13:55
holsteinHumpel: try a2jmidid13:55
HumpelI'll givr it a try13:56
holsteini could see everything in ladish13:56
Humpeltnx for the info ;)13:56
holsteinor some other connections panel13:56
holsteinand just couldnt make the connections13:56
holsteinand that did the trick13:56
holsteinthe other suggestion was to not let JACK manage the midi connections13:56
holsteinapparently there is a checkbox in the setup somewhere13:57
holsteinBUT a2jmidid did what i needed13:57
holsteinSO i didnt try it13:57
Humpelwell... jack and midi works when connecting virt.keyb and qsynth ;)13:58
Humpelstrange things happening....13:58
holsteinyup13:58
holsteinthat was my experience13:58
holsteini could use virt keyboard13:58
holsteinand not my keystation13:58
Humpela2jmidid and ladish... got it, will try it ;)13:58
holsteinHumpel: try #opensourcemusicians13:59
Humpelit's not only the keystation... no midisport 2*4 and no midi-usb-cable13:59
holstein[lsd] over there is a midi guy13:59
Humpelholstein, IRC? www?13:59
holsteinusing 10.1013:59
Humpelah... got it (irc)13:59
holstein:)13:59
Humpeltnx for the help/info ;)14:00
holsteinanytime14:00
* holstein heading out for a bit...14:00
Humpelholstein: ahhh... I got it working... finally. thanks to this page:http://wiki.linuxaudio.org/faq/start?redirect=1#qwhat_is_the_difference_between_jack-midi_and_alsa-midi16:19
Humpeljack has been set up to use alsa_raw. So now I have switched to alsa_seq and voila... now I can connect everything the way I want to. Hooray!16:20
ventrikholstein, so I've tried all the 10.xx.xx distros16:48
ventrikOf Kubuntu, Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Mint, Both Live and not live, Alt CDs and DVDs and regular CDs and DVDss16:49
ventrikAnd studio16:49
ventrikAnd all get that GPU error before boot finishes16:49
ventrikI think the /only/ way to get around this is to have someone compile the correct drivers I need into the distro16:50
ventrikUnless there is some sort of code I can input into the boot line (from grub/bootloader) that will cause the OS to boost without a GUI and then I'd just type in the directory of an external drive that I have with the driver in it and then execute that, then reboot, and then have my driver working.16:51
holsteinHumpel: w00t :)16:56
holsteinventrik: its going to be tricky for sure16:58
holsteingood luck16:58
Humpelholstein: ;)16:58
holsteinhave you found someone with you GPU?16:58
holsteinventrik: i used the alternate CD18:49
holsteinthis weekend18:49
holsteinand installed a command line only system18:49
holsteinno reason why you cant to that18:49
holsteinOR get into recovery mode18:50
holsteina shell to do what you need to do18:50
ventrikRecovery mode wont boot18:58
ventrikGUI error18:58
holsteinright18:58
holsteinyou'll have to google around about how to get into tha recovery shell18:58
ventrikDone that o.o18:58
holsteinive booted into it before18:58
ventrikI posted on the forums18:58
holsteinventrik: how about another graphics card18:59
holstein?18:59
holsteini got a stack of them18:59
holsteinif you were closer :)18:59
holsteinget one at a charity shop18:59
holsteinventrik: how did forcing vesa work?18:59
holsteinif i were you , i woud be using 2 cds19:00
holsteina normal hardy iso19:00
holsteinand a normal lucid iso19:00
holsteinmaybe a couple more for testing19:00
holsteinknoppix and puppy19:00
ventrikI've burned all my stack of 50 lol19:01
ventrikAnd I can't swap my GPU19:01
ventrikThis is a lapto19:01
ventrikp19:01
holsteinvesa should work19:02
holsteinhas it?19:02
holsteinwith puppy?19:02
holsteini use puppy because there is a prompt at boot19:02
holsteinto use vesa19:02
holsteinand its easy to test19:02
holsteinventrik: how did hardy boot live?19:03
ventrikWhat's Hardy?19:04
holstein8.0419:04
holsteinthe last long term support19:04
ventrikOh I only could find 1010 and 100419:04
holsteinhttp://releases.ubuntu.com/8.04/19:05
holsteinyou'll need to play detective19:05
holsteinsee how you can get to the desktop19:05
holsteinusing what driver19:05
holsteinand looking at the xorg.conf19:06
ventrikWell I'm out of disks19:07
ventrikAnd at school19:07
ventriklol19:07
ventrikSo I'll try that after finals I suppose19:07
holsteinyou can do it19:07
holsteinit will work19:08
holstein:)19:08

soulknifeholstein, i am gonna mess with the demo21:35
holsteinlooked great21:35
holsteinbut i use ardour mostly21:35
holsteinim stoked that renoise is available for linux21:35
