[03:10] new xubuntu user here with a question... how do I connect to a samba server? In Ubuntu there is a "Connect to Server" option but I don't see it here [03:11] I hasten to add that Google searches have not been of any help [03:15] must go to sleep... back later [03:55] hey guys anybody good with Samba? Im trying to get my Windoze box to client to my Linux samba share.. [04:03] !samba [04:03] Samba is the way to cooperate with Windows environments. [04:08] what is wmdock?? [04:11] !wmdock [04:11] hmm. [04:11] oh, a pm [04:12] apparently it doesn't know anything about wmdock and is too embarassed to say so publicly. [04:16] heh [04:19] I am a noob, too. Just thought I'd give it a try. Found this on Google: http://goodies.xfce.org/projects/panel-plugins/xfce4-wmdock-plugin [04:19] I guess it is true. The people trying to help you don't know much more than you. I installed xubuntu on Saturday. [04:20] I have never heard anything referred to as a wmdock in 6 years of linux use [04:22] !info wmdock [04:22] Package wmdock does not exist in maverick [04:23] !find wmdock [04:23] Found: xfce4-wmdock-plugin [04:23] seems like it is a pretty specific type of app then [04:34] A gadget dock for xfce wm [04:34] it appears === sagar_ is now known as sagarchalise [11:55] sup [11:58] hello [13:15] good morning [13:16] Hello all [13:16] I have a problem related to Pidgin [13:16] Received unexpected response from https://api.oscar.aol.com/aim/startOSCARSession: Invalid requested host [13:17] Could anybody help please? [13:18] Nobody use Pidgin? [13:18] aindigo, try disabling SSL [13:19] It's the same. [13:19] did you restart pidgin after disabling? [13:19] No [13:20] maybe try that [13:20] also, there is a bug #506647 about that [13:20] Launchpad bug 506647 in pidgin (Debian) "Can't login to ICQ or AIM servers "Received unexpected response from http://api.oscar.aol.com/aim/startOSCARSession"" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/506647 [13:20] search for "mc-tool" in the page, maybe that comment could help... [13:21] other than those, i have no ideas since i don't use pidgin often, and even when i do, not with oscar/aol [13:24] No good result. Server is login.messaging.aol.com [13:24] SSL is disabled [13:24] :-( [13:32] aindigo: try to get new version 2.7.7 http://www.pidgin.im/download/ubuntu/ [13:33] In process [13:34] I need to reboot. [13:57] I have updated to the latest ver. and it works now but without encryption. Thanks! [13:57] np [13:58] I cant change server from login.icq.com [13:58] It's new bug :) [13:59] xD [14:00] I found solution. Need to disable account first. xD [14:02] Thanks for help again [14:28] Is there a way to speed up the boot process for pcs with SSD? [14:29] what kind of SSD [14:30] enabling TRIM-support is possible, but i'm not completely sure if it's riskful if hardware doesn't support it properly [14:30] OCZ Vertex, SATA, 2.5" 60GB. [14:31] it says "Trim support" on the box... [14:33] it should be pretty darn fast already out of box [14:33] https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Solid_State_Drives#Mount_Flags [14:34] Sysi: well... not really - at least not as much as I expected... but since installing the SSD, I did not change any settings... [14:34] netbook? [14:35] atom is slow, on my dualcore this really flies [14:36] netbook and pc... will compare^^ [14:36] vorhin war er da [14:37] sorry, wrong window === SuperHark is now known as MichealH [15:11] Sysi: my boot time with ssd on a netbook now is about 25sec from pressing the "on" button. is that ok? [15:35] hello [15:37] what is graphical interface for vino? [15:48] :> [20:55] Can anyone point me to a good guide for paring xubuntu down more? [21:42] My Xubuntu 10.10 is up to date (as of yesterday), and plymouth keeps hanging the computer. When this happens, my display goes blank and the monitor's power light is amber. I can kill it with magic sysrq, but if I do that I can't boot into gdm. If I don't pass "splash" on the kernel command line, everything runs fine. Is this a known problem? Is there a fix? [21:44] plymouth was already causing this problem even before I did last night's updates; I updated because I thought it might fix it. But probably a week ago plymouth ran fine. [21:44] Rakko, sounds like incompatibility between plymouth and your video card. The known fix/workaround is remove splash [21:44] right [21:44] If you edit /etc/default/grub , you can remove splash and not have to do that for each boot [21:45] I'd like to have the splash, though [21:45] maybe I should downgrade my plymouth packages, you think? [21:45] Not unless you want other issues [21:45] my video card is some sort of onboard Radeon... something like X300. I'm not at the computer to check right now. [21:46] having no splash don't by default bring wall of text back [21:46] It used to work flawlessly [21:46] what if you press M when it hangs? [21:48] I haven't tried it. What's M supposed to do? [21:48] mounting problems, fstab, can cause that kind of issue [21:49] oh, where it gives the option to skip or do manual recovery? I'm not getting that [21:49] it won't necessarily show up [21:49] I was getting that a few days ago, when I had obsolete entries in fstab. But they're gone now [21:50] I have a bug to file on that one, too [21:52] https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/plymouth/+bug/575808 looks like my problem; same video card [21:52] this says it's occasional... maybe I just hadn't ever experienced it before [22:04] how do I start xubuntu using a regular VGA console instead of the framebuffer one? [22:16] hi? I am new to xubuntu.. was followinf instructions on sharing a drive on the network with windows computers.. [22:18] did shares-admin in terminal.. the instructions say to set the drive as SMB but I don't get that option [22:19] i can only choose nfs [22:19] You installed samba? [22:20] what is samba? [22:21] samba is what you need for SMB [22:21] !samba [22:21] Samba is the way to cooperate with Windows environments. Links with more info: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MountWindowsSharesPermanently and https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/serverguide/C/windows-networking.html - Samba can be administered via the web with SWAT. [22:21] ahh cool thanks [22:21] You are welcome [22:22] ok i installed samba but it does not show up in the program menu [22:23] As far as I know, samba does not show in the menu. It is an interface to the windows drive [22:23] https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MountWindowsSharesPermanently [22:24] oh... that is not what i am trying to do [22:24] I am not trying to mount a windows drive here.. I have an ntfs partition on this hard drive I want to share on a network [22:26] you need to mount the ntfs and then use samba to serve it [22:26] Can anyone point me to a good guide for paring xubuntu down more? I am trying to get it using less resources. [22:27] shrmn, google? [22:28] I've been finding 10.04 guides. Is there much that will get me hung up if I am using 10.10? [22:28] should be about the same [22:29] it is mounted.. how do i use samba to share it? [22:32] charlie-tca: what search terms would you google? [22:32] Sunnis: look for a samba howto [22:33] Samba has a web interface that sets up shares for you. I haven't used it in several years, though (or samba at all) [22:34] Rakko, I guess "xubuntu lighter"? I don't really know, since I wouldn't do it [22:34] xubuntu is plenty light for me so far [22:34] I only have 1 GB of RAM and it's faster than my Macbook [22:35] which has 2 [22:35] I'm on a pIII 933mhz 512 mb ram so I am just trying to eek out as much performance as I can. [22:35] of course my MB is only 32-bit too [22:35] 'eek' is right ;) [22:35] Don't even know if I'd actually slice anything off. [22:36] I would think the proper way to do it is start with the minimal install, and add enough pieces to make everything work [22:37] Well, when I looked over the minimal install page on the ubuntu wiki, it was talking about 100mhz procs and 64mb ram so I figured I was good for a base install of xubuntu with my specs [22:37] I'm going to give a try to things like switching to Midori from Firefox a try before I get too involved. [22:38] Your specs should be good for a standard Xubuntu install. [22:38] I'm reasonably happy with the performance. Just a constant tweaker is all. [22:41] I find an improvement from not using a *dm [22:42] Try different browsers; epiphany and midori, try removing games, try different themes in appearance and window manager, remove apps you won't use, like gimp and abiword and gnumeric [22:43] use the adblock of midori [22:43] Definitely. Good tips. [22:44] midori + adblock is my first stop. [22:44] I'd never heard of midori [22:45] I used to like Galeon back in the day... that was nice and fast. Also Skipstone, but I never used it much. [22:46] I wonder how Chrome does on a bottom-of-the-line computer [22:47] chromium uses way too much memory [22:47] (with multiple tabs) [22:52] I was surprised by how much of a memory hog chromium/chrome is. [22:52] midori is lightweight webkit browser. [23:04] nice. will have to check it out.
