[11:04] aye [11:04] bucket loads [11:04] delays on all trains [11:04] We only have a small bit [11:04] but not much at work [11:04] oit's getting to work is the issue [11:04] was in london yesterday wasn't bad [11:04] you probably have the wrong sort of snow for trains [11:05] When it falls it doesn't seem to thaw [11:05] it just compacts and turns to ice [11:06] aye [11:06] aldershot was very icey last night [11:06] and snowy this morning [11:11] It's just cold in Kings Langley [11:11] -2 [11:11] but clear weather [11:12] terran: when you heading home home [11:12] 23rd [11:13] late [11:13] Earliest I could get [11:13] 23rd to the 3rd [11:13] * czajkowski heads home 18-31st [11:13] work remotely mon-wed [11:13] laptop and phone [11:14] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_wrong_type_of_snow [11:14] Haha! [11:14] What a brilliant article [11:23] * slashtom finds it amusing that home isn't the place where you live [11:23] well there's home [11:24] and then there's home home [11:24] aye [11:24] home home with the famiy [11:24] house/home where I live now [11:25] flight home was 200 return which wasn't bad [11:25] seriously! [11:25] had I gone out days later and stayed days later it was almost 450/550 return [11:26] * slashtom and ebel are flying to .bhx.uk 27-30 for about €60 [11:26] yeah mid holidays is fine [11:26] but if I wasnt at home for xmas day I'd be shot [11:26] €200 is a lot. [11:26] we booked our yonks ago [11:26] aye, well we knew we were going [11:26] 15 for insurance [11:27] wise move at this time of year [11:27] you need insurance? [11:27] 24 for bags return [11:27] oh right, we don't take bags [11:27] flight insurance at this time of year aye, covers for late/delayed/cancled planes [11:28] good point. [11:28] what does insurance get you above the legal minimum? [11:28] I'm flying back here from Dublin [11:28] as the airline is obliged to give you a refund or put you on a different flight [11:28] because flying out from Shannon was £130 but flying from Dublin was £30 [11:28] weather warning! two feet of snow on the way http://url.ie/8c2c [11:29] lul [11:29] czajkowski: you might have travel insurance with VHI [11:29] no vhi any more [11:29] was gonna get worldwide which would mean it would cover UK [11:30] however that was 890 or with teeth 1140 [11:30] so eh no [11:30] I can get uk private care for 600 [11:30] yeah suppose. while you're in the uk all the time [11:30] aye [11:30] I get travel insurance with my bank account [11:30] very good ebel :P [11:31] did you manage to register with a GP czajkowski? [11:31] nope [11:31] not had a chance [11:32] me neither [11:32] and I don't have my NI number either [11:32] :i [11:32] and I've been here nearly 6 months [11:32] :o someone said I have to have that to register [11:32] i don't think so, you might need your NHS number though [11:32] but as a new patient, that should be allocated [11:32] I have everything to register I just haven't done it [11:32] some day [11:32] when I feel ill [11:32] I'll do it [11:33] lol, you'll be ill and won't be able to go to the doctor [11:33] I have Bupa health insurance too [11:33] because you're not registered [11:33] though I'm not sure how health insurance works [11:34] in .uk few people bother with health insurance, the nhs is generally pretty good [11:34] I get it for free as part of my job [11:34] nice [11:34] yeah I know slashtom I guess coming from ireland where I've had private insurance since I was a kid, tis pretty normal for me to just go and getit [11:36] czajkowski: the uk doesn't have a state run health insurance system like the VHI in ireland [11:36] since that would be a two-tier system and old labour wouldn't have gone for that [11:36] also they have the money to make the NHS good :P [11:37] well, they borrowed it [11:39] don't question the boom [11:39] sitting on the sidelines, giving out [11:46] We've still got a place free on the ubuntu-ie table quiz [11:47] cool [12:35] ebel: no more complaining https://twitter.com/#!/mhall119/statuses/9669963212136448 [12:36] ooooh cool, and interestingf [12:37] you haev to go andedit the venues one by one that are already created I think [12:37] as there was no way to fix that issue [12:38] but going forward it shouldnt be an issue [12:40] czajkowski: yeah saw that [12:40] cool to see that was fixed :) [12:41] aye [12:42] it was an issue for some, granted not many complained about it, but nice to see it fixed [12:42] also if you read your mail [12:42] cjohnston sent a detailed mail re stuff happening/happened in the LD [12:42] just had a new release [12:48] afternoon [12:49] aloha tdr112 hows you [12:50] not too bad , its a bit cold and i am not sure if i should leave college now to get home and stay and do work [12:50] * tdr112 hopes the buses still run [12:50] aye saw a lotta bus routes pulled last night over there [12:59] http://breakingnews.ie/ireland/november-sees-4200-less-people-on-live-register-483963.html grrrrr because we're all leaving!!! [13:02] davisc: any ide how to get to Stansted from London ? [13:02] the revenue should be able to provide figures for "Since 200X Y thousand people who where working, are now not working" [13:02] czajkowski: Train from Liverpool Street [13:03] long| [13:03] Huh? [13:03] long??? [13:03] does it take long [13:03] flight on Sunday [13:04] hoping no delays [13:04] It's about an hour from Liverpool Street [13:04] ok [13:04] thanks [13:04] np [13:05] will be very peeved if first business trip gets called off due to snow [13:05] going anywhere cool? [13:05] stuttgart [13:07] bah HSBC, gave me a passport ac with a debit/visa card, great, but I cant get a UK credit card on that ac. [13:07] and cant change that ac for a year [13:07] :s [13:07] visa debit should be alright, no? [13:08] I think they are well accepted online/internationally, unlike ireland's laser cards? [13:08] Was about 18 months before I got a credit card here [13:08] ebel: Pain in the tits for some things - like deposits on rental cars [13:08] slashtom got his credit card recently. [13:09] davisc: oh yeah for preauths and things... [13:09] Yup [13:09] Better than nothing, sure [13:10] aye [13:10] it's not the end of the world [13:10] but just saw my bank statement for using my Irish CC over here [13:10] *sigh* [13:11] It's still one of the cheapest ways of getting foreign currency [13:15] I use my Visa Debit for everything [13:15] it hasn't failed yet [13:15] every site accepts it as a credit card [13:17] aye [13:34] hello [13:34] hows everyone?snowed in? [13:36] yo yo [13:36] yo ho ho [13:37] ebel, you know any ubunut docs to help reduce cpu load? [13:38] ubuntu_mad: not exactly that specific [13:38] The more you know about linux/unix the more capable you will be to do that. [13:39] ubuntu_mad: I assume you want to reduce your CPU load? Is your load too high? How do you know? [13:39] ya,that mean going down to almost kernel level righ? [13:40] had a recent crash course on linux...install Gentoo from ground up :-D [13:40] 2 day crash course [13:40] you don't need to know kernel level. userspace level is enough. [13:41] regarding cpu,ive an old box running as a media server with a 1.7g cpu...it struggles at times especially with higher def stuff [13:42] are you sure it's the CPU? Might be disk io, esp if you have big files. [13:42] just wanting to trim some of the fat off it to see if it helps [13:42] These programmes are helpful to tell you what's going on: htop (or top), vmstat [13:43] the great thing about linux is that you don't need to guess and try things to see if they work, you can approach it from the other end [13:43] "What's the problem? Oh and how do we fix that?" Rather than trying things to see if they work [13:44] how do you play your videos? if mplayer, then it should print to terminal if you are dropping frames due to too slow a cpu. [13:45] what does top (or htop) show you for "load average"? that should tell you if your cpu is struggeling [13:45] what does vmstat (e.g. do "vmstat 1") tell you when you play the video under the 'cpu' section? [13:46] if there is loads of wa (wa = wait), then it's waiting for your harddisks. [13:46] if you see loads of si (swap in) or so (swap out) in the 'swap' section, then you don't have enough memory, your computer is swapping out to disk (which is a killer for performance) [13:47] using vlc mostly, not at the machine now so will go over what you said when i go home [13:48] it has 2G ram with 1GB swap [13:48] powertop is another tool. Shows you what is waking up your cpu. it's aimed at saving power, but it should give you an insight into what's going on with your CPU [13:49] idealy i do need to upgrade the box but money is holding me back right now [13:49] :'( [13:57] davisc: do you hold a UK drivers licence? [13:59] Nope [13:59] And will never [13:59] Would never trust the DVLA [14:02] lol [14:10] davisc: just seeing from all the car places for loans you need one [14:10] which is odd [14:13] Ah, I never had a car loan [14:13] ebel: you mind trowing me down for the last place on the team for the quiz if no one else has taken it, [14:14] infoturtle`: sure sure. You in dublin? thought you were outside the pale? [14:14] I am but I'll make it up for the day for the craic [14:15] ah cool. ☺ [14:15] cool thanks ^^, [14:15] infoturtle`: where you staying? [14:16] and can you sign up on the eventbrite page yourself aswell please? [14:17] ya sure, I'm just cooking so I'll do it in the hour [14:17] duno where I'm staying but I'll sort something [14:17] ok [14:17] hostel maybe [14:18] I might be able to sort you out with that. [14:18] * ebel has a spare room in city centre [14:19] that would be sweet [14:19] if your happy to share [14:20] depends on how good you are at the quiz, hehehehe :P [14:20] czajkowski: BTW, do you know the UK tax year runs April to March? [14:21] ha ha I was going to bring whiskey to earn my keep but I supose I can try a little harder than that [14:32] aye [14:32] need to also register for NHS this week and vote [16:12] http://twitter.com/#!/greenparty_ie/status/9995370000031745 [16:13] well that's a bit of a two fingers up to people [16:13] ebel: ^^ [16:14] czajkowski: you gotta hand it to the green party, once they are bought, they stay bought [16:15] And since they know they are going to get utterly rogered at the election, they may as well be pissy little bitches :-) [18:03] infoturtle`: do you want to pick up the ubuntu cds then [18:04] ya I'd love that, I'll be up in dublin for the quiz [18:05] cool i can give them to you at the event or i can meet you in tog [18:06] hadn't thought about going to tog, I'd like to check it out so I might go, you going to be at the quiz too? [18:14] infoturtle`: i am helping run the quiz ,
