Jordan_Udan2: What exactly do you have booted, Ubuntu or Super GRUB Disk?00:00
dan2super grub disk in to some bootleg terminal only ubuntu00:00
dan2ok00:02
dan2so what do I do now?00:02
dan2I see this bluescreen menu briefly flash in and out00:03
dan2like it has the option I want to choose00:03
dan2to reinstall grub00:03
dan2but I can't select it00:03
dan2before it just disappears00:03
Jordan_Udan2: Are you at a terminal currently?00:04
dan2yes00:04
Jordan_Udan2: Run "dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc".00:04
Jordan_Udan2: When it asks for "install devices" be sure that your boot drive, probably "/dev/sda", is selected and *no* partitions, like "/dev/sda1" are selected.00:05
dan2Jordan_U, wonder if the hard disk is bad00:06
dan2I just reinstalled to sdb00:06
dan2which USB drive was SDA00:06
dan2never brings me to a menu00:07
Jordan_Udan2: I'm not clear on what you have done. Did you run dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc?00:07
dan2yes I did that00:08
dan2the usb drive with super grub boot disk was sda00:08
dan2so I only installed to sdb00:08
Jordan_Udan2: Good. Hopefully that fixed things, though it's hard to say without knowing what the original cause of the problem was.00:09
dan2didn't fix squat00:09
Jordan_Udan2: What exactly happens when you try to boot from the internal drive?00:09
dan2goes directly back to the bios00:09
dan2I was able to pick a kernel and boot with it from super grub disk00:10
dan2but have no idea what is wrong with that drive now..00:10
Jordan_Udan2: Could you run boot info script as explained here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1291280 and pastebin the RESULTS.txt?00:11
dan2asking a lot to paste00:11
dan2for something that has no X windows00:11
Jordan_U!pastebinit | dan200:11
ubottudan2: pastebinit is the command-line equivalent of !pastebin - Command output, or other text can be redirected to pastebinit, which then reports an URL containing the output - To use pastebinit, install the « pastebinit » package from a package manager - Simple usage: command | pastebinit -b http://paste.ubuntu.com00:11
dan2ok00:12
dan2man00:14
dan2didn't mount this time00:14
dan2alright00:15
dan2this thing is toast\00:15
dan2probably bad drive00:15
dan2been shipped around the country too many times00:15
dan2does the ubuntu daily x264 have unity as default?00:16
dan2x6400:16
charlie-tcayes00:17
charlie-tcadan2, the daily and daily-live default to unity now.00:18
dan2man00:18
dan2cdimage.ubuntu.org is slow00:18
dan2.com00:18
charlie-tcatesting day00:18
dan2it's like 30K per second right now00:19
dan2is there a netinst version of this?00:19
coz_I dont think00:19
coz_dan2,  the only net install i recall is from debian00:20
Picidan2: http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/natty/main/installer-i386/current/images/netboot/00:21
Picidunno how tested they are though.00:21
dan2eh00:22
dan2how do I make an image from this?00:22
* Pici shrugs00:23
coz_dan2,  download the mini.iso00:23
coz_I;m surprised its even there actually00:23
coz_mm I do notice that xchat on natty .. at this point..does not remember its settings00:25
dan2well00:37
dan2apparently the netboot doesn't work to save it's life00:37
cozziemotook guys.. on natty..unity..I read there was a way to move the Panel to the bottom or whereever... anyone know how to do this?03:34
dan2does anyone else get window manager disappearing on this natty live cd?03:52
charlie-tcadan2, got to get the newest one. 20101202 is working03:56
charlie-tcabut, yes, the version before 02 is broken03:57
dan2I downloaded "current"03:57
dan2doesn't that point to that one?03:57
dan2and secondly03:57
dan2what specifically fixes the issue?03:57
charlie-tcaYeah, we just uploaded a new one about 2 hours ago03:57
dan2so after I finish my install, I can update03:57
dan2ahh03:58
dan2I must have downloaded 20101201.103:58
dan2charlie-tca, so what fixes it?03:58
charlie-tcalp:~canonical-dx-team/unity/unity.fix-68234503:58
dan2what am I supposed to do with that?03:58
charlie-tcahas to do with bug 68234503:58
ubottuLaunchpad bug 682345 in Unity "SEGSEGV in nux::ResourceData::GetResourceIndex() const ()" [Critical,Triaged] https://launchpad.net/bugs/68234503:58
charlie-tcayou asked for the specific fix03:59
dan2what package do I need to upgrade?03:59
dan2unity?03:59
charlie-tcaNot sure. something to do with renaming the example.desktop file03:59
charlie-tcaI just zsync the image to update it04:00
dan2I've already started the install process04:00
dan2from USB flash to USB flash04:00
dan2I'm not redoing it04:00
charlie-tcaokay. At least you know that is a known issue, right?04:03
dan2ya, it's been broken on my desktop since I upgraded to this04:03
charlie-tcaHopefully, that fix works for you, too. It fixed the live cd04:04
dan2k04:04
dan2is there anyway to keep the same theme for window borders but move all the buttons to the right hand corner of the window instead of the left04:04
dan2it is really annoying on the left04:04
dan2I haven't seen anything in appearance that lets me do that04:05
charlie-tcathere is, but I don't know what you doe for it04:05
charlie-tcadan2, there might be an easier way, but here is one way to move the buttons04:08
charlie-tcahttp://blog.daviey.com/blogroll/anything-but-the-buttons.html04:09
dan2charlie-tca, how do I get to the launcher favorites list?04:09
charlie-tcano idea04:09
charlie-tcaI can't really do much with unity and compiz, myself. I run Xubuntu because it works for me04:10
dan2man04:12
dan2us.archive.ubuntu.com is brutally slow04:13
charlie-tcayes04:15
Ambeerok so like04:19
Ambeeri am on the current 11.04 release04:19
Ambeerand alpha1 releases tomorrow04:19
AmbeerAm I going to have to download the new ISO tomorrow?04:19
charlie-tcano04:19
charlie-tca!final04:19
ubottuIf you installed a Alpha/Beta/RC version of Maverick Meerkat and have been keeping it up to date, then you are already running the latest version of Maverick. To make sure, type « sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade » in a console.04:19
charlie-tcathat applies to natty now instead of maverick04:20
Ambeerit says in my sys info04:20
AmbeerRelease: 11.04 (natty)04:20
Ambeeralso, does alpha 1 come out at midnight?04:20
AmbeerOr some time tomorrow04:21
IdleOneAmbeer: basically keep installing updates and you will be at alpha104:21
Ambeeranother question. I do not have unity ui04:21
charlie-tcasome time tomorrow, before midnite thursday UTC normally04:21
Ambeeralpha 1 should put me on Unity, right?04:21
charlie-tca!no, final is If you installed a Alpha/Beta/RC version of Natty Narwhal and have been keeping it up to date, then you are already running the latest version of Natty. To make sure, type « sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade » in a console.04:22
AmbeerSo after I do dist-upgrade04:23
Ambeerill be on Unity?04:23
Ambeertomorrow ofc04:23
charlie-tcaYou might have to choose desktop session on the login screen.04:23
AmbeerThats another problem04:23
Ambeerdesktop session doesnt even start up04:23
AmbeerAnd classic desktop barely does04:24
IdleOnewell, it is pre-alpha04:24
IdleOnebugs and brokenness is expected04:24
IdleOneeven welcome for some04:25
AmbeerYea04:25
AmbeerWhenever i start up none of the apps start (like show desktop, and the top bar)04:25
Ambeerso like hopefully alpha fixes that04:25
dan2damn04:26
dan2I'm still having the identical boot problem04:26
IdleOneI wouldn't hold my breath04:26
IdleOnethe Adoption of Unity has brought in some new difficulties, more so then a regular new release04:27
AmbeerBut they've used it in Netbook04:27
Ambeerso it's not that new04:27
IdleOneWhy did I capitalize Adoption :/04:27
dan2ARRRGHGHHH04:27
dan2why can't I boot any of these new ubuntu installs04:28
Ambeerhrm04:28
dan2I can't get to grub04:28
dan2it's just rolls back and forth through the bios04:28
AmbeerWhich dl did you do?04:28
dan2doesn't matter if I hold shift04:28
Ambeerthe current DVD ISO?04:28
dan2Amaranth, 1201.0104:28
dan2I downloaded it a couple of hours ago04:28
dan2I don't know how to fix this problem...04:28
AmbeerMaybe you should try the Maverick Meerkrat DVD instead04:29
dan2ugh04:31
dan2I don't want maverick04:31
dan2this has newer kernel04:31
dan2newer drm04:31
dan2less crap I have to compile04:31
dan2newer mesa04:31
Ambeerso which dl did you do04:31
Ambeerthe DVD 4GB ISO?04:31
dan2I told you which download I did04:31
dan2daily live04:31
dan220101201.104:31
dan2it was "current" then04:32
Ambeermaybe you should try the DVD ISO04:32
Ambeerand burn it to a dvd04:32
rwwso install maverick, a kernel backport, and the xorg-edgers ppa...04:32
Ambeeror that04:32
dan2I just want this stupid pos to boot04:32
dan2I think it has to do with the fact that I installed from one usb drive to another04:32
dan2this grub stuff can't handle switching from /dev/sda to /dev/sdb04:33
dan2rather04:33
dan2vice versa04:33
dan2and there's no way for me to control it04:33
=== FireCrotch is now known as nickmoeck
dan2jeez04:37
dan2I have no idea what is wrong with this pos04:37
IdleOneyou shouldn't be running pre release on a point of sale04:40
=== FireCrotch is now known as nickmoeck
dan2I didn't say point of sale04:42
dan2trying to edit grub.cfg.... no vi, no nano, no pico04:42
dan2more doesn't work04:43
dan2it just displays the whole file at one time04:43
IdleOnedan2: yeah I know what you meant, I was just trying to remind you of the language rule :)04:44
dan2man I have no idea what is going on04:48
dan2grub doesn't even start04:48
dan2man04:50
dan2the partitioner really screwed this one up04:50
dan2it left 1mb of free space in front of the primary partition04:50
dan2probably the reason this can't boot04:50
dan2ok, how do I rsync the latest image or such04:51
dan2and I'll reinstall I guess04:51
dan2are there mirrors of cdimage.ubuntu.com?04:57
Amber2welp05:42

cozziemotoAmber2  here is the release schedule ...you can see  how early the development stage is   https://wiki.ubuntu.com/NattyReleaseSchedule  if it is not working right now.... it could be your install or the state of the project at this moment... Pre Alpha generally means  no one should be trying to use it unless they want to participate in bug reporting or fixing issues.. or are advance enough to deal with some of the issue06:27
cozziemotos of a  "pre alpha"  distribution.. I am not trying to discourage you...but again if it is not working today ,.,,it may work tomorrow after  sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade06:27

leagrisAbout CD/DVD drive speed, I was wondering a way of setting speed to 1. Long time ago, an hdparm -E 1 /dev/hdc (dvd) would do it playing DVD at speed 1 getting ride of the jet engine sound from the DVD drive during a movie. Now with SATA and modern ubuntu/dvd it no longer work. Do you know of an alternative slowing down a DVD drive?07:00
coz_Amber1,  if you write ove top of it you will lose what you ha07:00

Ambeerit's unity panels17:08
Ambeerthat wont work17:08
AmbeerI can go into classic desktop fine17:08
sebsebsebAmbeer: ah right17:08
ikoniarats, yes, I forgot about unity17:08
sebsebsebAmbeer: well I read that the pre alpha Unity is quite buggy17:08
Ambeeri think it's a driver problem17:09
Ambeerwhen i first booted17:09
Ambeerit said something about 3d17:09
AmbeerSo I installed the "additional drivers'17:09
Ambeerand that didnt fix it17:09
* sebsebseb didn't really want to to be doing Unity support, jus wanted to see when alpha was coming out and that, but well I am here now so uhmm right17:09
sebsebsebAmbeer: ok yeah you need17:10
AmbeerAlpha is coming out today17:10
Ambeersomething before midnight17:10
sebsebsebthe correct driver for your card17:10

sebsebseboh at the second part of that factoid?17:11
sebsebsebAmbeer: maybe Unity doesn't work so well with later ATI cards I don't know,  but what about Gnome Shell did you try that, and that works ok?17:12
Ambeeryea im gnome shell right now17:12
sebsebsebok nice :)17:12
AmbeerIm confused at this driver page17:13
AmbeerI have the "ATI Catalyst Control Centre" installed17:14
sebsebsebAmbeer: well at least the proper/upstream interface works,  yep I mean Shell :)17:14
Ambeerbut i wanted unity to work :(17:16
sebsebsebAmbeer: well uhmm17:16
sebsebsebI don't expect it  to work that well17:16

sebsebsebAmbeer: in fact I have a link I can give you17:18
sebsebsebAmbeer: that you will probably find interesting17:19
Ambeeralright17:19
sebsebsebAmbeer: ok i'll say one thing about this link though17:21
sebsebsebAmbeer: most of the coments are rather ignorant, people who don't really know what they are on about, but the blog entry itself, rather good indeed17:21
AmbeerAlright.17:22

sebsebsebhttp://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2010/12/screenshot-desktop-unity-in-natty/17:22
nperrysebsebseb: your right people commenting on omgubuntu are annoying..17:22
sebsebsebnperry: well its the Ubuntu fan boys (and girls) site, so yeah17:23
nperryThats why I tend to stick to plant ubuntu.17:23
sebsebsebhowever sometimes get people who know what they are on about commenting as well, which happended a bit with a recent blog entry about Gnome Shell :)17:23
AmbeerAgain, I dont think it's a problem of unity not being stable17:24
sebsebsebAmbeer: ok, well it may be17:28
sebsebsebor simpally your card is a bit to new for Unity or something17:28
AmbeerI don't think I have the right 3D drivers17:29
Ambeerand my card isnt that new tbh17:29
sebsebsebAmbeer: uhmm you got them from system > administration > hardware drivers or?17:33
Ambeeryes17:33
sebsebsebthen you probably do have the correct drivers installed really17:34
sebsebseband probably also so since yep Gnome Shell's working :)17:34
sebsebsebAmbeer: which is the interface you should start using really instead of Unity,  but going into details about  why that is, would be going off topic, altough put simpalley  Gnome Shell is upstream,  the interface many distros will be using,  and Unity is downstreame and a distro that Ubuntu will probably only be using for a rather long time17:35
sebsebsebdistro?  I meant to put interface, above17:36
AmbeerHrm. I only dl'd 11.04 because i wanted to try Unity17:36
sebsebsebAmbeer: right yeah I understand17:36
sebsebsebhowever17:36
sebsebsebAmbeer: I was trying out 10.10 a bit before earlier this year, because of Unity17:37
sebsebsebon here17:37
Ambeerhii coz_17:37
coz_Ambeer,   ok I am back17:37
sebsebsebAmbeer: by the looks of it the current 11.04  Compiz Unity is similar to the Mutter  Unity in 10.1017:37
AmbeerSo sebsebseb says it won't work because of my card17:37
sebsebsebAmbeer: if you want to try a more stable Unity, I would suggest the 10.10 version, which you can also run on a desktop :)17:38

coz_alpha 1 today17:40
coz_Ambeer,   mm  I am not up on ati cards at all  however i have a real low end ati card on the other machine and it runs natty/compiz/unity just fine17:40
Ambeersebsebseb says my card is too new17:41
sebsebsebAmbeer: uhmm it might be17:41

sebsebseb,but I don't know17:41
cozziemoto RS480 [Radeon Xpress 200G Series]17:42
Ambeermaybe when i upgrade to alpha 1 it will work17:42
coz_thats my ati card17:42
Ambeerbut still same problem as last night coz17:42
Ambeerno panels :(17:42
coz_Ambeer, mmm17:42
coz_Ambeer,  sounds odd ,,but again I am not up with all of the ati crazy numbering system for their cards17:43
Ambeeryea they even renaming all the new ones to AMD17:43
Ambeerlol17:43
coz_Ambeer,  I know that my card is fairly low end17:45
bjsniderwith ati cards, generally the third number in the string is what counts, so eg. a 4590 would be superior to a 554017:45
coz_Ambeer,  but I have no idea where your's falls17:45
AmbeerMainstream card, mid range17:46
coz_Ambeer,  then I am confused why that wouldnt work17:46
coz_Ambeer,  does it work with compiz  ?17:46
bjsnideralthough the 5k cards have opengl 4 and the 4k cards do not17:46
Ambeerhow can i test if it works with compiz17:46
Ambeersorry if thats a dumb questions17:46
coz_Ambeer,  i was wondering if you had already had linux installed before with compiz running17:47
Ambeeri have had 10.10 since it's final release date17:47
coz_Ambeer,  ah ok and did you have fancy effects going on that?17:48
Ambeeryes17:48
Ambeerthe extra effects wont work in 11.0417:48
Ambeer:\17:48
coz_Ambeer,  then I am not sure why it wont work with natty...from what I understand most ati cards work well but then  I am not sure17:48
coz_Ambeer,  mm that's  odd17:48
bjsnideri don't see why it would be odd. the fglrx driver hardly ever works until just before an ubuntu release17:49
Ambeerbjsnider: so i won't be able ot use unity until april?17:52
Ambeer:(17:52
sebsebsebAmbeer: uhmm17:53
sebsebsebAmbeer: Did you ever try the 10.10 Unity?17:53
AmbeerNope.17:53
sebsebsebAmbeer: ok well17:53
sebsebsebAmbeer: if you want Unity badly enough, then try that one I guess17:54
sebsebsebAmbeer: really the 11.04 Unity is a re write of the old Unity found in 10.1017:54
AmbeerIm not gonna re-install my OS again :\17:54
sebsebsebwell you may of had to anyway17:54
sebsebsebnow that your on pre alpha17:54
sebsebsebwhen Ubuntu is in development,  things tend to mess up for quite a few people, enough before the final17:55
sebsebsebfor them to have a good proper reason to clean install17:55
AmbeerBut the gnome shell works fine17:55
sebsebsebAmbeer: plus in my expereince, getting the development version updates,  don't always get the  new latest features that are meant to be there.  Or I mean they get installed, but not properly.17:55

yofelI don't think it ever had time to do so before I disabled it19:51
phoenix_firebrdyofel: did you check with 2 or 3 files19:52
yofelseveral, it could be that some of them were indexed maybe, not sure where the database it kept19:53
yofelphoenix_firebrd: looking at some recently created files I would say the bug isn't fixed, since they don't have ID tags listed19:57
phoenix_firebrdyofel: ya, i too think same. so your kde version is 4.6 beta1 right?19:58
yofelyes19:58
yofelstrigi isn't really part of kde though19:58
