dpmmorning all08:59
andrejzmorning dpm, little late today ;)08:59
dpmheya andrejz, yeah, I stayed longer yesterday as well ;-)09:00
andrejzjust register at ustream, so i can ask some tough questions later today :p09:01
dpmandrejz, awesome :)09:03
dpmit's going to be the first one, so we'll have to figure out how it will go. I'll be more than happy to run it like a Q+A session if folks start asking questions09:04
artnayany new announcements on chromium translations? spanish seems to be almost done09:05
artnayhttps://translations.launchpad.net/chromium-browser/translations09:05
dpmartnay, as I said before, this will be announced in due time :)09:05
artnaydpm: okay, as the natty isn't translatable yet this would have been a nice project atm09:06
andrejzI was wondering whether our new translation suggestion workflow is fit for a translation story it works like this - http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1450316/zaslonska_slika.png09:06
artnaywhen both natty and chromium are announced to be translatable, there's not enough time for both09:07
andrejzAlso i was wondering if it's possible that we blog about this on our blog (synced with planet) and you publish it on ubuntu news and facebook09:08
dpmandrejz, sure. Some things: I can definitely post it on FB (you just need to ping me). But you can also do it in the same way by adding a comment to the FB page, so feel free to do it without having to ask for permission. As per Ubuntu News, I can publish things there, but I'd rather publish a more "human" translation story. I think it is good to have content on the planet on _any_ subject related to translations, but for the stories, I think some09:12
dpmthing like an interview as you were suggesting some days ago would be a better "translation story"09:12
dpmwhat do you think?09:12
andrejzyes, i see your point, translation stories should be more motivational things and this is more a technicality09:13
dpmyeah, exactly09:13
dpmbut it will still be a good article for Planet and FB09:13
dpm(and for the Translations Portal, when we have it :)09:14
andrejzagreed09:15
dpmcool09:16
dpmbtw for anyone in the channel: if you've got an idea but it's still not clear, do sign up for stories at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Translations/Stories as well - this should encourage other teams to sign up and participate!09:33
dpmartnay, at this point, I'm not expecting to be many changes to the Chromium translations setup, so I'd say if you want to go ahead and start translating, please do. (But I didn't tell you that :)09:35
dpmThere you go, the advantages of being in the translators channel: you get all the chit chat before anyone else ;-)09:35
artnaydpm: I've already done that ;) Although I still wait for an official announcement (via planet ubuntu rss)09:36
dpmartnay, :) The announcement is written and it will get out very soon09:37
artnaynice, at least one chromium should get some translation love then09:38
dpm:-)09:38
dpmTLE, <dpm> hey pitti, good morning. Have you had a chance to have a look at what happened with yesterday's maverick langpack build in the PPA?09:39
dpm<pitti> dpm: not yet, sorry; I'm currently drowning in emails and external requests09:39
dpm<pitti> but it's high on my list, promised09:39
artnayeh... what I meant: I've had HTC Desire (android) for half a year now09:39
artnayI have to use it in English because the translations suck ***09:39
artnayChrome's translations are somewhere between good and average09:40
dpmartnay, oh, now I get you09:40
dpmartnay, can you remind me in which language you translate?09:40
artnaydpm: finnish, https://launchpad.net/~jiri-gronroos09:41
dpmaaah, now09:41
artnaygoogle should give some more translation love to their programs09:41
artnayor at least provide a better way to suggest enchanchements to existing translations09:42
andrejz@artnay: programs are translated09:42
dpmartnay, I guess it depends which external translation agency translates them. The Catalan translations are usually pretty good. But nothing compared to community translations :-)09:43
andrejzbut very bad09:43
andrejzat least this is the  case for slovenian language - mostly they are acceptable09:43
andrejzbut translation of youtube are just *horrible*09:43
artnayandrejz: same in Finnish09:43
artnaysomewhat acceptable and in some cases totally wrong09:43
artnaybut it's probably the same with community translations. I wish they could provide something between translation agencies and community09:45
artnaythey would probably get much better results that way. let the community suggest enchancements and the translations agencies to approve/disapprove09:45
artnaytransifex could work for that... but yeah, this is a wrong channel to talk about that09:50
TLEdpm: ok, well you just let me know when we have some in -proposed, then we will talk about whether the calendar needs updating09:52
dpmartnay, you are free to talk about nearly anything in this channel, but I'm not sure what you mean that "transifex could work for that". FWIW Launchpad, Pootle or Transifex, for example, could work09:53
dpmTLE, ok, will do that then09:54
artnaydpm: but rosetta doesn't have such an integration to external repositories09:55
artnayand pootle... well, I prefer LP or Transifex over it09:56
dpmartnay, you can have a mirror of any external repository and get translations integration, or you can host a bzr repository in LP. It all depends on the tools the project uses. I'm not discussing which tool is best (because I'm biased :), I'm just saying that there is the choice09:57
artnaydpm: true, many seem to host just translations on LP and code somewhere else. I wish the same could be applied to libre office (by using transifex or rosetta)09:59
dpmyeah, /me wished too09:59
dpmbut I haven't had any contact with the LibreOffice people. As I've said before, I've been meaning to do that for a while, but had no chance yet10:00
artnaydpm: some time ago (weeks) there was discussion on libre office's translation ML. many seemed to think pootle would be a good choice.10:01
artnayseems like they went the pootle way: http://www.libreoffice.org/lists/l10n/mail9.html10:02
dpmI've done OO.o translations in pootle in the past, and while pootle is a great tool, I'm biting my tongue not to make negative comments on the setup they had at OO.o. I do hope the LO setup is better10:03
happyarondpm: when would be next translation update for maverick, is there a schedule?10:47
dpmhappyaron, it should have been today, but there has been a problem in building the language pack. Here is the schedule: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Translations/LanguagePackUpdatesQA/MaverickLanguagePackUpdateReleaseSchedule and here is the spec:10:48
dpmhttps://blueprints.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/ubuntutheproject-community-n-translations-language-pack-updates-schedule10:48
happyarondpm: thanks, really quick response!10:49
dpm:-)10:49
dpmTLE, pitti has just triggered a manual build of the maverick langpacks. I'll keep an eye on https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-langpack/+archive/ppa/+packages?field.name_filter=&field.status_filter=published&field.series_filter=maverick - if all goes well, by the end of today (but more reallistically tomorrow) they should be built, and then I'll ping pitti to copy them to -proposed10:59
dpmThe problem seemed to be that the Lucid and Maverick builds were scheduled the other way round10:59
dpmi.e. yesterday's was a Lucid build10:59
dpmnow the schedule is again fixed and according to https://dev.launchpad.net/Translations/LanguagePackSchedule11:00
dpm(just a FYI)11:00
andrejzHello dpm!12:35
andrejzI found a translation error and need your help12:36
andrejzIf you look here12:36
andrejzhttps://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/maverick/+source/apt/+pots/apt-all/sl/+translate12:36
andrejzyou will see, that the package apt-all has been updated (probably from upstream)12:36
andrejzthe uploader is Michael Voigt12:36
dpmhey andrejz, I'm in the middle of something now, but I'll read the backlog. The apt translation is a bit strange, as I'm not sure if we're using apt-all or the other templates12:37
andrejzapparently in the file there were some encoding errors12:37
andrejzSo all strings with our special letters  -like č. š and ž changed to something like Paket %s različica %s ima nereąene odvisnosti:12:37
andrejzis it possible to somehow reverse this changes ?12:38
andrejzin total there are 214 of these strings - https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/maverick/+source/apt/+pots/apt/sl/+filter?person=mvo12:42
andrejzdpm, I am leaving now13:11
andrejzplease let me know what you found out on my email13:11
andrejzandrej.znidarsic@ubuntu.com13:12
dpmok, I will, see you later andrejz :)13:12
andrejzhopefully i will be home to watch the show :)13:12
dpm\o/13:12

yantrashilpiKannada Translation Team16:08
yantrashilpiwhich other channel are we on?16:08
yantrashilpifor the videocast I mean16:08
Aureebg noise16:18
Aureedpm ^^16:18
yantrashilpithere is a huge background hiss16:18
yantrashilpiit's a little better now16:18
Aureethanks16:19
dpmyantrashilpi, http://www.ustream.tv/channel/ubuntu-translations-with-david-planella16:19
yantrashilpidpm: you got it!16:19
Aureethey want my full name and zip code, so I'm staying here ;)16:20
dpmhttps://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/ubuntutheproject-community-n-translations-portal16:21
yantrashilpidpm: Did I miss your talk about the workflow?16:28
yantrashilpidpm: ahh ok great!16:28
dpmhttps://translations.edge.launchpad.net/+groups/ubuntu-translators16:30
Andre_Gondimdpm, what do you think is the most difficult to the newest translator?16:32
yantrashilpiAndre_Gondim: I agree with dpm: This is not intuitive for someone who is not a programmer for sure.16:34
dpmhttps://translations.launchpad.net/16:38
yantrashilpidpm: so when do the natty translations open up? Is that after release?16:41
Aureenow you're blue16:44
Auree:)16:44
TLE*G*16:45
AureeI often see terrible mistakes in translations, I'd say that standards are too low :(16:49
AureeIt16:49
AureeRussian16:50
Aureein Ubuntu, it's especially frustrating to see mistakes in the slideshow during the installation16:50
yantrashilpiAuree: Perhaps there is a way to allow seasoned translators to sort of mentor newer translators into the system and familiarize them with tone and quality?16:51
yantrashilpieither that or just a "review" process16:51
yantrashilpidpm:16:51
yantrashilpi^^16:51
Aureeright, Russian team lacks an experienced mentor16:51
AureeI am a translator, but I'm not very active right now16:52
yantrashilpione of the things I've come across is that even though I've translated on other systems before, for Ubuntu I don't necessarily know the context of certain strings etc and what the standard terminology is... etc. Obviously this requires discussions on the list etc.16:52
Aureeok, that would be great16:52
michael_kyes, discussion with other memebers of team is essential16:53
Aureeok16:53
yantrashilpidpm: not to derail the discussion but do we have a glossary mechanism in launchpad?16:54
yantrashilpiThank You.16:57
dpmhttps://davidplanella.wordpress.com/2010/11/30/natty-translations-plans-i-translations-stories/16:59

dpmmichael_k, cool, looking forward to doing the next one, it was fun!17:06
michael_kdpm, i almost want to make one myself, you are all doing fantastic job and I am trying hard to spread the word17:07
dpmmichael_k, thanks! Sure, have a try, it's quite easy if you already have an idea of what you want to talk about17:07
michael_kdpm, translations and life in general, what else? are you living in Barcelona btw?17:08
andrejzHello!17:15
andrejzgood joob dpm!17:16
yantrashilpidpm: I believe at UDS you or someone else was talking about creating a video etc to promote or show translation work etc. What's the progress on that?17:23
yantrashilpihow can I help?17:23
andrejzthere was a talk about translation videos17:23
dpmmichael_k, no, I'm living in Valencia, a bit southern from Barcelona17:24
andrejzto show how easy it is to contribute to ubuntu through rosetta translation system17:24
dpmthanks andrejz :)17:24
michael_kdpm, nice! Valencia is equally well known17:25
andrejzalthought valenica footbal club is not doing so good anymore :(17:25
dpmandrejz, no problem there, I'm a Barcelona fan and they're doing fantastic! :-)17:26
michael_ki am not a football fan so i am not impressed by teams17:26
michael_kbut Grand Prix de Catalunya rocks!17:27
andrejzso you must be happy with el clasico :)17:27
dpm5!!!!17:27
dpm:)17:27
michael_kmuy bien (?)17:27
yantrashilpi demasiado bien!? hahah17:28
michael_klol!! let's translate now!!!17:28
dpmyantrashilpi, yeah there was a talk about creating the Ubuntu Translations video to put it in the portal, but we assessed the workload and decided to focus on other projects for this cycle. This does not mean that if I've got time when I finish the other points in the roadmap I won't pick it up. So I might start on it later on in the cycle, but just as a "nice to have". In any case, if there is no time to complete it, I definitely want to work on17:28
dpmit next cycle. If anyone wants to help, they're also much welcome. The steps we decided would be necessary are on the whiteboard at: https://blueprints.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/ubuntutheproject-community-n-translations-introductory-video17:28
andrejzdpm, have you looked at the apt-all package?17:29
dpmandrejz, no, unfortunately not. Let's have a look at it tomorrow, sorry for keeping delaying it, but I need to go soon today17:30
andrejzok, no worries. I would just like to fix this before the language pack updates, because now 214 strings are wrong17:31
andrejzand it would be great if there is an semi automatic solutoin so i don't need to fix every string17:31
dpmandrejz, if that was for maverick, it will be already too late, as the language pack export was on Tuesday17:32
andrejzyes, but now we have a week to test and fix mistakes, right ?17:32
dpmandrejz, just major mistakes, those for which you consider it is necessary to rebuild the language packs17:33
andrejzthe problem is that a package has been uploaded with wrong encoding17:33
andrejzso all the non english characters in a package are not displayed properly17:33
dpmandrejz, let's talk about it tomorrow, yeah, that looks like a major issue.17:34
andrejzi haven't noticed it before since it was imported on 2010-11-1917:34
andrejzok, let's talk about it tommorow17:34
dpmok17:35
