shad1Hello07:43
shad1Is there someone who could please help me real quick?07:43
TheSheep!hi | shad107:44
ubottushad1: Hi!, Welcome to #xubuntu! Feel free to ask questions and help people out. The channel guidelines are at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IRC/Guidelines. Enjoy your stay!07:44
shad1Hey! Alright07:44
shad1So, I'm trying to install Xubuntu on my Mac Mini, but the .iso file is too big for my CD's, and I can't do DVDs because the Mac mini won't read those. And it won't boot off of any USB drives either07:46
shad1How do I 'skim' the .iso down?07:46
TheSheepits should fit on the cd :/07:46
TheSheepbut you can also do a network install07:47
TheSheep!mini07:47
ubottuThe Minimal CD image is very small in size, and it downloads most packages from the Internet during installation, allowing you to select only those you want (the installer is like the one on the !Alternate CD). See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD07:47
shad1Well I thought so too, but every time Power ISO keeps telling me 744 needed, 702 available...should I just use a different program?07:48
TheSheeptrying won't hurt07:48
Myrttithe disks are less than 700M in size, so perhaps07:48
TheSheepyou can also try enabling 'overburn' in the program's options07:49
shad1I couldnt find that in powerisop07:49
shad1powerIso*07:49
TheSheepbe sure that you are recording the file as image, not just putting the file on the cd07:49
TheSheepthe latter won't work07:49
shad1How can I tell the difference? I double-click the file to open, then hit burn07:50
shad1I mean, when I open it, it tells me the file is a Hybrid Mac/PC Image, as opposed to "Non-bootable image" or somethingm07:52
TheSheepI really don't know that program you are using07:54
TheSheep!iso07:54
ubottuTo mount an ISO disc image, type « sudo mount -o loop <ISO-filename> <mountpoint> » - There is a list of useful cd image conversion tools at http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/CD_Image_Conversion - Always verify the ISO using !MD5 before !burning.07:54
TheSheephmm07:54
TheSheep!burn07:54
ubottuCD/DVD Burning software: K3b (KDE), gnomebaker, brasero, serpentine, graveman, Nautilus-CD-Burner, GToaster, xcdroast (GNOME), wodim (terminal-based). Burning .iso files: see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto07:54
TheSheepthey have a howto there07:55
shad1Ah, I knew it would be a problem trying to do this from Windows..07:55
shad1I tried making a VM to do stuff from there but it was bugging out on me ;/07:56
shad1Damn, Daemon tools does not work either, same "insufficient disc space" error07:57
TheSheepshad1: make sure the iso you download is correct -- check the md5 checksum07:59
TheSheep!md5 | shad107:59
ubottushad1: To verify your Ubuntu ISO image (or other files for which an MD5 checksum is provided), see http://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM or http://www.linuxquestions.org/linux/answers/LQ_ISO/Checking_the_md5sum_in_Windows07:59
Myrttishad1: you could try InfraBurn08:06
Myrttioh, vm.08:06
shad1Do I need to extract the .iso to check the md5sum? I follow the directions and it just spits out a ton of errors08:07
Myrttishad1: no08:07
shad1Hm08:07
shad1Well I'm just going for the overburning option08:11
TheSheepshad1: if the md5 is incorrect, you will just waste a cd08:11
TheSheepshad1: your download was corrupted08:11
TheSheepshad1: download again08:11
TheSheep(or use bittorrent, it can download only the broken parts)08:12
shad1I'll try that08:12
shad1Man, how is the occurance of a corruption that high?08:13
shad1risk of*08:13
Sysipretty big file over internet08:14
shad1Well uTorrent didn't download anything new, jsut says I'm seeding now08:14
shad1All 744MB of the .iso08:15
TheSheep:/08:19
TheSheepcan you pastebin the errors you got?08:20
shad1I dont even know if I did it right to be honest...I followed this guide: http://www.linuxquestions.org/linux/answers/LQ_ISO/Checking_the_md5sum_in_Windows  And the .iso is on my desktop, CD'd over to nmy desktop, and did md5sum -c md5sum.txt (I grabbed that from within the .iso) and all the errors are "No such file or directory"08:23
Sysimd5sum.txt need to be on same folder, and you need to run that command there08:24
Sysi*.txt and .iso08:25
shad1the .txt and .iso were both in the same folder08:25
shad1does it matter if there are other files and folders in that folder alongside the .iso and .txt?08:25
TheSheepI think it tried to check the sums for other files in that md5sum.txt which you don't have08:27
Sysiit shouldn't08:27
Sysiyou had correct path?08:28
shad1let me try again with the two in their own folder08:28
shad1Same thing. "md5sum -c md5sum.txt"08:29
Myrttiwhat if you do md5sum disk.iso?08:33
shad1without the -c ?08:33
Myrttiyes08:33
Myrttiand then compare the output to the contents of the md5sum.txt08:34
shad1yeah it gave me something real now08:35
shad1let me compare08:35
Myrttithough if you've done the download with torrent then it should by default check out08:36
shad1yeah, they are exactly the same anyway08:36
Myrtti(I personally never use -c filename.md5 anyway)08:36
shad1is -c just to compare every files' md5?08:37
Myrttishad1: so whatever vm solution you're using, it's not capable of using an ISO as installation media?08:37
Myrttishad1: it's useful if you've downloaded many files08:37
Sysiisn't processing md5sum from big file a bit slow operation?08:39
shad1oh, well i made a VM with ubuntu 10.04 just cause i have it on hand, and installed it, but for some reason the stupid thing doesnt like my keyboards. I could type before installing, but I can't log in because the keyboard just flat out stops working. Mousing over it turns the caps lock key off and stuff.08:39
shad1And yeah it took like 10 seconds to do the md5, but my currrent rig is fairly hefty08:39
shad2fd08:46
shad2well im reinstalling the VM stuff, hopefully it should work...but once it is up, what should I do?08:48
shad2anyone?08:55
shad2well thanks anyways guys08:59

John_AbbottQuicky here, How do I load a cd in Prompt mode on ubuntu?21:19
charlie-tcayou mean, mount it?21:19
John_AbbottYes21:20
charlie-tcacreate a directory for it, then use      mount /dev/cdrom /DIR_JUST_CREATED21:20
charlie-tcabut it might be /dev/sr0 like mine is21:20
John_Abbott...21:20
charlie-tcaoh, put sudo in front of mount21:20
John_AbbottI have a actual disk.21:21
Myrtti!mount21:23
ubottumount is used to attach devices to directories. See also https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Mount21:23
* Myrtti facepalms21:23
Myrtti!iso21:23
ubottuTo mount an ISO disc image, type « sudo mount -o loop <ISO-filename> <mountpoint> » - There is a list of useful cd image conversion tools at http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/CD_Image_Conversion - Always verify the ISO using !MD5 before !burning.21:23
Myrttithere we go21:24
charlie-tcaOh, sure, I could not have done that21:25
Myrttibut AFAIK even if it's totally headless system it should automount the cd21:25
Myrttiif it doesn't, IIRC iso9660 is the correct filesystem type21:25
John_AbbottGUYS.21:27
John_AbbottIT'S A DVD.21:27
John_Abbott...< . >21:27
charlie-tcaJohn_Abbott: it does not matter. Please don't shout at us21:27

John_AbbottI just burned it -.-21:32
charlie-tcaHelp for windows in actually in ##windows21:33

charlie-tcaThey needed DOS to boot the cd21:34
John_AbbottDrat21:35
John_AbbottIt's a dvd. and I only have a cd and DVD drive21:35
charlie-tcaand again, it doesn't matter to linux if it is a cd or dvd21:35
charlie-tcaThe only I can do is suggest you try ##windows for help with it.21:36
Thermign821:50
