Sentynelokay, so I've got two monitors connected to my computer, configured in the nvidia x server settings and stuff. both monitors are working, I can move my mouse between them, add widgets, panels etc to the second... but I can't work out how to actually move windows to the other screen, or open them on that screen00:06

adsI've got a problem with NetworkManager: dhcp is requesting a dns server, the dhcp server is providing the dns server, but NetworkManager does not add the nameserver to /etc/resolv.conf. It does add the "search" value, if provided. What's wrong?00:13

Sentynelwell that wasn't very successful; tried enabling xinerama, rebooted, and kdm wouldn't start properly00:28
yofelGinbuntu: if you installed it from the PPA, you can use 'ppa-purge' (needs to be installed first) to downgrade the packages00:28
yofelI'm not sure if the configuration files will work fine with 4.5 though, since downgrades don't get tested00:28
Sentynelboth screens blinked on and off every couple of seconds; eventually (by holding ctrl+alt+f2 for a while) I managed to drop out to text-only mode and restore a backup xorg.conf00:28

Boom_FarmerAfter a playing minecraft for a while, plasma-desktop expands to take up more than a gig of memory. It does this randomly and without warning, slowing down the machine. If I kill plasma-desktop and restart it, the computer will speed back up, but it's annoying. Does anyone know why this happens or how I can fix it?01:44

Snowhogbdizzle: What's your question?04:02
bbeck_I notice that amarok 2.4 beta has been announced, but I'm not able to find it. apt-get update/grade doesn't show it as an upgrade item.  Has anyone else been able to get it?04:03
bdizzleI usually use firefox as my browser and was wondering if there was a way to auto-retrieve the IP addresses of websites I usually visit and insert them and the DNS into the hosts file?04:03
bdizzleI'm trying to learn how to build my own hosts file04:03
bdizzleerr, DNS system04:03
GabrielYYZbdizzle: bear in mind that reading a large hosts file impacts the time it takes to load a website.04:04
bdizzleI know04:04
bdizzleI'll comment most of it out if I'm not using it04:04
bbeck_I would imagine though reading a host file even a large one, would be faster than querying a domain server.  though that's just a guess04:05
GabrielYYZbbeck_: i think it's not04:06
GabrielYYZbdizzle: you can do "whois www.website.com" in konsole or in a website that provides the whois service to check the ip04:07
GabrielYYZbdizzle: there's an easier way, but i can't remember right now04:07
bbeck_you can use the host command.04:07
bdizzleooh, it looks like this bulldog program builds one for me too04:08
bdizzleyeah, I know.. but that's manual, I was hoping to set up something automatic04:08
GabrielYYZbbeck_: thanks!04:08
GabrielYYZbdizzle: why not edit firefox's about:config and increasing the cache for dns queries? i think that'd be simpler04:10
bdizzleI wasn't aware that existed?04:10
bdizzlewhich option is it GabrielYYZ?04:11

bdizzlethanks04:12
GabrielYYZbdizzle: check it out: http://firefox-tutorials.blogspot.com/2010/05/preferences-tweaks.html it's the DNS section04:13
bbeck_Out of curiousity, what's the goal for using your hosts file?  Is it speed or just in case you loose your DNS server?04:13
bdizzlelittle of both04:13
bdizzleand thanks GabrielYYZ04:13
GabrielYYZbdizzle: sure, no problem04:13
GabrielYYZthe hosts file method isn't all that great, i have a big hosts file for blocking bad sites and it slows down the loading times a bit04:14

userI need to hand in my computer to a computer garage. I will have to wipe all my data09:36
usercan I copy it over and back securely with dd ?09:37
userI mean is this reliable and will it copy over EVERYTHING   including my cookies my different partitions and the bootloader?09:37
user(Am new to linux, so sorry if it's a noob question)09:38
userand can dd also read the zfs partition a friend made on the computer? (he uses solaris i think)09:38
user(I can only login to kubuntu tho)09:39
valoriedd will indeed copy EVERYTHING09:39
valoriealthough maybe a bit too literally for most uses09:40
valorieI don't know about zhs, but I don't know why not09:40
valorieit literally is copying all the bits09:40
valorienot the files09:40
valorieif you want to copy the files, you are better off with rsync, etc.09:41
uservalorie: well I wanto to copy it 1:1 and once I get the computer back copy it back using a live cd09:42
valoriemight indeed work perfectly for that09:42
userIf I understood it correctly dd makes it be exactly my hdd as is now, so I'd not need install the os again09:43
usercool, thanks09:43
valorieright09:43
userthogh the "might" makes me a bit insecure...09:43
valorieyou should read up on it09:43
valoriedon't rely on random helpful people on IRC -- be your own expert09:44
userhave a specific link or do you mean wikipedia article about dd?09:44
valorieI try to read the scrollback in this channel, and do see bad advice occasionally09:44
userbefore I'm an expert, I think the sun will have tunred into a red giant09:44
valorieman dd, probably09:44
userok, thank you09:44
valorieno, an expert reads enough to feel secure, and then does something09:45
userok, will try to understand cryptic man text... ;-)09:45
userthx, valorie09:45
valorieif you want to be absolutely sure, make two backups -- one with DD, and one of just your data with rsync09:45
macouser: yes it is exact bit for bit copy. no you wont need to reinstall the os if you do the whole drive09:45
usermaco_ thank you for confirming09:46
macothis was how i did backups until i realised rsync'ing my home, getting a list of installed packages from dpkg, and reinstalling the OS was *way* more efficient09:46
valorielol09:46
macobecause dd'ing a 120GB drive takes ~8 hours09:46
macoalso, i think the disks need to be the same size09:46
valoriesee, here's an expert who has done it09:47
valorie:-)09:47
usermaco: as it will be the same computer, szes will be identical09:48
useronly it's graphic cards will be changed09:48
userdd seems easier to me than getting list of installed packages, etc, also I have full system encryption and I would not know how to set up that one if I had to reinstall09:49

amichairmoetunes: it doesn't say anything other than showing an error right on bootup and then a blank screen :-(10:49
amichairI don't even have enough time to read what the error is10:49
moetunesthat'll make it hard - I'd recommend a live cd and a chroot environment to try and fix it then10:50
moetunesyou won't get a grub prompt if it errors out10:51
amichairactually, the problem starts a bit earlier - I want to migrate a wubi install to a separate partition. I resized the ntfs partition, looks to be successful (windows runs ok), but kubuntu no longer does10:51
moetunesI didn't think you could do that - but I've never bothered with wubi10:53
amichairmaybe I should try upgrading wubi on the windows side first just in case10:54
moetunesI'd try finding some info on the process first10:55
moetunes!wubi10:55
ubottuWubi is an Ubuntu installer for Windows users that allows you to install and uninstall Ubuntu like a Windows application, in a simple and safe way. http://wubi-installer.org/support.php and https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide for troubleshooting. Please  file bugs at http://launchpad.net/wubi/+filebug. For Ubuntu Maverick/10.10 http://releases.ubuntu.com/maverick/wubi.exe10:55
amichairI found instructions for the migration wubi -> partition in the forums with lots of positive feedback (i.e. it works)10:55
amichairbut it starts at the point that you already created the new partition scheme,10:56
amichairand assumes k/ubuntu is still working :-)10:56
moetunesok then sounds like you've done the research bit :)10:57
amichairyeah, it's the dealing with unexpected failures part that's giving me trouble :-)11:06
amichairoh no11:11
amichairI think running the newest wubi installer under windows just uninstalled the previous one instead of installing a newer one (and deleted all data and disks in the process)11:11
amichairI guess that solves the migration problem11:19

dhendu9411I have a problem with network manager that I can't figure out... if I try to change the settings to anything other than using a wallet to store passwords, the config won't save.  Any ideas?14:03
rorkskafti: /dev/sda2 can't be mounted, aren't the other two partition listed in Dolphin?14:06

rorknemoden: try /help14:11
nemodenthat works. thanks :)14:12
rorkskafti: what's the size of that partition and what do you see when you try to mount it?14:12
vbgunzI had the most insane and maddest experience yesterday. I resumed from hibernation and no amount of putting in my password to unlock my session worked. It truly bugged me out. No caps lock on or anything. I just could not log in, my password was always wrong. I rebooted and that fixed it but really? what could have caused that?14:13
skaftihm im trying to figure that out because theyr names are different in dolphin14:13
skaftiim sorry im just like a baby in this :)14:14
rorknp, we've all been there or still are ;)14:15
skaftidev/sdb is prob what dolpin calles 98.714:15
rorkand often when I help someone I'm learning as I go also14:16
skaftibecause thas the largest disk14:16
skaftiand thats not a partition i think14:16
rorkno, partitions end with a number, e.g. /dev/sda is the first harddisk, /dev/sda1 is the first partition, /dev/sda2 is the second. Might the disk be empty? You can use gparted to check that (you may have to install it)14:17
skaftiwait i have to help a little familymember packing a christmas gift for his mom :)14:22
skaftiso i only have partitioned drives cause they all end with a number14:33
rorkskafti: if you install gparted it shows you how your harddrives are partitioned, it also shows unallocated space.14:39
rorkfdisk didn't show anything on the second harddrive, so I don't think it is partitioned.14:39
skaftiyes have installed it14:40
sundbergHello!14:41
rorkHi sundberg14:41
sundbergI am trying out Natty, and any idea where to enable / is it missing the directory widgets that used to show files insides directories when hoovering them14:41
rorkquestions about Natty should be asked in #ubuntu+114:42
sundberghum, that was badly written, i'll try again. I think 10.04 plasma directory widget showed directory contents when keeping mouse over a directory (in desktop widget)14:43
sundbergah! ok sorry!14:43
nerdy_kidsundberg: you have to press the little "up" arrow to get the browser pop up.  Some plasma themes dont have that button though btw14:43
nerdy_kidmeh, this is more a kde question then a ubuntu one.14:43
skaftiI see the partitions now i have 3 hard drives and one is partitioned to 4 parts14:43
skaftisemms 2 of those parts have a lock on them14:43
skaftione i can acess with putting in a password but the other one is just blocked14:44
sundbergnerdy_kid: that did help14:44
skaftior its a bougus14:44
sundbergseems like theme oxygen is missing the 'up' arrow as air does have it14:44
sundberg(and i guess the fact that its missing is well known and no need to report it .. )14:45
skaftiits not a real drive shows exatct same size14:45
rorkskafti: what's that partitions name and filesystem type?14:45
nerdy_kidsundberg: several other themes are missing it is well.  You can actually still use it, just click where the up button should be and it works lol14:45
sundberghaha, true!14:46
sundbergthanks!14:46
skaftiname /dev/sda2 extended14:46
skaftiextendet of /dev/sda5 which is ntfs14:46
rorkskafti: it's a bogus drive indeed, it's used as  a container for other partitios14:46
skaftican i rid it ?14:47
rorkthat will also remove /dev/sda514:47
rorkand there's no need to, it's a common thing but afaik normally it doesn't show up14:48
skaftii think i will move the data to a save drive and format this, dont like the caos14:48
rorkskafti: do as you please, gparted is a nice too to create/remove/format partitions14:49
danaedoes kopete supprort video/audio chat?14:52
amichairsharky: there can be up to 4 primary partitions, plus a single extended partition containing several logical partitions. windows must boot from a primary partition, in linux it doesn't matter.14:55
amichairsharky: oops, that was for skafti ^^14:55
amichair /dev/sda5 and up should be the logical ones14:57

Guest15739no, i have not installed it because KPackageKit want to remove kubuntu-desktop to install it18:43
DarthFrogGuest15739: Uninstalling kubuntu-desktop probably won't be a problem; it is a meta-package.18:45
asfyxiaOk, just to be sure, open a terminal (Konsole) and do sudo apt-get purge kdeutils (that removes really everything from it), when it's finished, you do sudo apt-get install kdeutils.18:45
DarthFrogBy that I mean, it won't really uninstall anything.18:45

amorphous1Ginbuntu, the GUI does 3 things: "apt-get update", "apt-get upgrade" "apt-get dist-upgrade"22:21
amorphous1Ginbuntu, the dist-upgrade also upgrades the system, as in new kernels.22:22
Ginbuntuthat is so wrong22:23
amorphous1Ginbuntu, why?22:23
Ginbuntudist-upgrade should not be there22:23
amorphous1Ginbuntu, then hoe do you upgrade the system?22:23
Ginbuntudist-upgrade should only be performaned when the user want to upgrade to a newer release22:23
Ginbuntuamorphous1: I am still confused.22:24
amorphous1Ginbuntu,  "dist-upgrade" IS NOT upgrading to a NEW release22:24
Ginbuntuamorphous1: I  have kde 4.5.4 installed but Update Manager tries to install kde 4.5.122:24
amorphous1Ginbuntu, it's distribution upgrade (System upgrade)22:24
amorphous1don't be fooled by the name22:25
amorphous1:)22:25
Ginbuntuamorphous1: ^^22:25
Ginbuntuamorphous1: I have kde 4.5.4 installed but Update Manager tries to install kde 4.5.122:25
Ginbuntuthat breaks my system22:25
moetunes!ppa22:26

amorphous1Ginbuntu, the upgrade to the newest version is called "do-release-upgrade"22:27
Ginbuntumoetunes: but Update Manager should NOT try to install an older version of a package22:27
amorphous1Ginbuntu, man do-release-upgrade in a terminal to see more info22:27
amorphous1Ginbuntu, that depends on your software sources22:28
Ginbuntuamorphous1: I only have the default ones and kubuntu/ppa22:28
moetunesGinbuntu:  obviously it is you 'cause noone else has this issue22:28
amorphous1Ginbuntu, what ppa exactly?22:28
amorphous1Ginbuntu, It could be the ppa22:29
GinbuntuI have ppa:kubuntu-ppa22:29
Ginbuntumoetunes: this is a fresh install. it can't be me only22:29
moetunesGinbuntu:  obviously it is you 'cause noone else has this issue22:30
GinbuntuI solced the problem23:07
Ginbuntuthe dependencies of the packages in PPA is broken23:07
yofelGinbuntu: which dependencies?23:26
Ginbuntuyofel: when installing the updates it uninstalled the package kubuntu-desktop which caused a balckscreen when trying to login23:26
Ginbuntufix: install the package kubuntu-desktop manually after update23:27
yofelright, and I'm sure you're on 32bit, since someone else reported that before23:27
Ginbuntuyea, I am on 32bit23:27
yofelI filed it as bug 687551 - someone needs to look into it23:28
ubottuLaunchpad bug 687551 in Kubuntu PPA "installing updates on i386 maverick wants to remove plasma-desktop" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/68755123:28
yofelit's a bit odd though since it doesn't happen on 64bit23:28
Ginbuntuyofel: hopefully some one will resolve it23:33
yofelyes, this is rather bad..23:33
Ginbuntuis it possible to highlight words with errors in kde like in gnome?23:33
TorchGinbuntu: yes, KDE supports spell checking (i don't use it and can't tell you how to enable it though)23:34
GinbuntuTorch: I found it. thx23:38
GinbuntuTorch: any Teadict alternative for KDE?23:39
GinbuntuI mean stardict23:39
TorchGinbuntu: what would that do?23:39
GinbuntuTorch: it looks up the definition of a word when you click on a selected word23:40
TorchGinbuntu: no idea if something like that exists for KDE, sorry.23:40
kuvuyofel: is this on natty or maverick for 4.6 b2?23:41
yofelkuvu: maverick 4.5.423:42
kuvuyofel: is this for 4.6 b2?23:42
kuvuyofel: ok23:42
GinbuntuI find kde 4.6 beta a bit unstable23:42
kuvuGinbuntu: just updated fresh 11.04 to b2..looks good..using it right now23:43
Ginbuntukuvu: does sleep/hibernate work?23:44
kuvunetbook more snappy on vbox 4.0 beta23:44
kuvuGinbuntu: it's on vbox23:44
Ginbuntukuvu: where do you get beta 2? I only see beta 123:44
kuvujust updated a few moments ago23:45
kuvua fresh install23:45
yofelGinbuntu: in natty archive uploaded a while ago, maverick isn't released yet23:45
kuvuyofel: did u see my post on kubuntu-devel about the slideshow?23:46
kuvustill showing 10.1023:46
GinbuntuI think I will wait for a stable release23:47
yofelnope, but I saw your post in -devel23:47
yofelerm, ignore me, I'm tired23:47
Ginbuntumhh23:47
Ginbuntuwe will get kde 4.6 in 10.10 right?23:47
kuvuGinbuntu: it is already23:48
kuvub1 at the moment23:48
GinbuntuI hope we will get a nice performance increase23:48
Ginbuntukde4 is still laggy compared to gnome sometimes23:49
yofelso far 4.6 is running ok, at least with beta2 the suspend options are back without HAL, so I'm happy for now23:50
Ginbuntuyofel: that was my problem. suspend didn't work on my laptop with kde 46 B123:50
Ginbuntuyofel: Dolphin also was slower when you have no instance opened23:50
yofel*that* was a bug, dolphin tried to run a device detection with HAL, which failed, it was stuck for a moment, and then continued23:51
yofelworks fine in beta223:51
Ginbuntugreat to hear.23:51
Ginbuntucan't wait to install it on my laptop23:52
Ginbuntuthose two were my big issues23:52
