=== DoctorMO is now known as doctormo [18:38] howdy doody [20:08] thorwil: Hey, can I ask a favour? I would like a poster reviewed critically. I'm so far not happy with it but I think you might be able to offer some good advice. [20:09] doctormo: sure [20:09] http://imagebin.ca/view/JpEU0f9C.html [20:10] doctormo: what's the target medium and size? [20:10] Medium: paper, wall hanging, size US double letter, aka silly size ;-) [20:11] It's actually called Ledger/Tabloid sized. [20:11] But I assume it could be reformed into A3 for other markets. [20:12] it just looks like it would have to be fairly large to be readable [20:12] it's too dense, crowded [20:13] the type dances way too much, especially as it looks like 3 distinct funky fonts are used? [20:14] thoughts on how to fix some of the issues? the main font is 18pt Ubuntu, the rest are funky I agree. [20:14] never use justified without hyphenation (you might get away with it on the web, but not in print) [20:14] I think I've been critizied more in the past for my font selection than anything else, so I defer immediatly on the issue now. [20:14] try to use 2 fonts only [20:15] shorten the text wherever you can [20:16] e.g., don't mention an example in text, if you have a list right next to it [20:17] brightness contrast between body text and background is a bit on the low side [20:18] try to establish sections with spacing alone (no bars for the titles) [20:18] I'm thinking of posting the svg http://divajutta.com/doctormo/art/foss+creative-commons.svg to the mailing list while I recharge my artfulness. Do you think anyone there would be any good at nudging it in the right direction?\ [20:20] doctormo: except for rob oakes i'm not aware of anyone still on the list where i saw indication of layout skills [20:21] usually also no indication of a lack thereof. simply not layout work :) [20:22] I guess I'll have to come back to it myself, not all my layout work is this bad, I think I've just gotten a little tired of this one. [20:59] thorwil: I decided to be persistent, can you check i've incorporated all your good suggestions? http://imagebin.ca/view/EFZMHu.html [21:00] doctormo: better, at now it can breathe. you really should look into the use of grids in layout [21:04] doctormo: the result of half an hour (and i could invest several times that to get it really right): http://www.foopics.com/showfull/8dd687f66275d6fd8bb2e0cc565c2080 [21:05] you have to imagine text flowing around the bottom left image ;) [21:05] nice [21:06] didn't care about the fonts, just cared about introducing a grid [21:07] i would consider to go with a single image. with this layout, in the top right [21:08] doctormo: i noticed you didn't use flowed text. well, you should [21:08] I thought I did [21:09] doctormo: want the file, before i go and shut off the mind-eater? [21:09] Email it to me so I can see your grids, I think it will give me an idea of how you do things. [21:10] done [21:10] good night! :) === Schendje-2 is now known as schendje
