larsselavyHi, I have a problem with cinelerra, i don't know how to solve it. I've just change my computer, i've installed ubuntu studio with realtime core (i don't know if it's linked to my problem) and now i have a sound latency on cinelerra of almost 1 second... Any idea of the problem?14:13
ScottLlarsselavy, do you still have the -generic kernel installed?  you can try booting into it and seeing if the latency changes14:15
larsselavyScottL, I don't know if it's installed, how can I know? My computer is a new one, nothing was installed before i install ubuntu studio14:18
ScottLlarsselavy, when you boot the computer, does it show a menu or take you straight to logging in?14:19
larsselavystraight to log14:21
larsselavyScottL,14:21
larsselavyso i suppose i don't have a generic kernel14:21
ScottLare you familiar with the command line (also known as the terminal)?14:21
larsselavyyeah depend on what14:21
ScottLlarsselavy, just because it goes straight to log in doesn't mean you don't have other kernels, that might just be the way grub is set14:22
larsselavyi mean depend on which command lines14:22
larsselavyok14:22
larsselavybut i don't know how to reset grub...14:24
larsselavyScottL,14:24
ScottLprobably the most straight forward is to search in synaptic, are you familiar with synaptic larsselavy ?14:25
ScottLi would search for 'linux-image-2'14:25
larsselavyyeah14:25
larsselavyScottL,14:26
ScottLthis should show which kernels are installed already14:26
ScottLlarsselavy, which version of ubuntu studio did you install (e.g. lucid, maverick)?14:26
larsselavylucid14:26
ScottLokay, so lucid comes with a -generic kernel by default14:26
ScottLi would presume then that you added the -realtime kernel manually14:27
ScottLso unless you removed the -generic kernel, you should still have it14:27
ScottLand even if you did add it you can always add the -generic again via synaptic14:27
holsteinhey guys :)14:28
larsselavyi didn't remove it so i suppose i still have it14:28
holsteinlarsselavy: what is the output of14:28
holsteinuname -a14:28
holsteinin a terminal14:28
larsselavyi didn't exactly add the realtime kernel manually, it asked it at installation14:28
holsteinlarsselavy: you can post that here14:28
holsteinits just a line14:28
larsselavyLinux Lillith 2.6.32-26-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Wed Nov 24 09:00:03 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux14:29
larsselavyholstein,14:29
ScottLah, larsselavy tha was asking if you wanted -realtime privelages, not install the kernel14:29
ScottLthis is to give better performance14:29
larsselavyScottL, ah so i don't have the realtime kernel?14:29
larsselavyok14:29
ScottLno real-time kernel, it even shows you that with your uname -a14:30
ScottLwhen you use cinelerra are you also using JACK as the sound server?14:30
* ScottL has never used cinelerra14:30
ScottLhi holstein :)14:31
larsselavyno alsa14:31
ScottLhmmm, not sure why there should be latency then14:31
larsselavymmm14:31
larsselavyshit14:31
ScottLalthough you probably are using Pulse Audio on top of alsa (it's installed by default)14:31
holsteinlarsselavy: how is hte sound otherwise14:31
holstein?14:31
holsteinthe*14:31
ScottLlarsselavy, you might also check either cinelerra forums or IRC channels14:32
larsselavythe sound is ok, just as it should have been holstein14:32
holsteincareful, this channel is logged... canonical will make you put a dollar in the 'curse-word' jar ;)14:32
larsselavyholstein, ?14:33
holsteinlarsselavy: can cinelerra use JACK ?14:33
larsselavyholstein, no14:34
holsteininteresting14:34
holsteini cant imagine expecting low-latency audio without using JACK in linux14:34
holsteinas a user or a dev14:34
larsselavyholstein,  maybe it's a cinelerra problem something in the settings, i don't know14:35
holsteinlarsselavy: your up to date right?14:35
holsteinwith system updates?14:35
larsselavyyes14:36
holsteininternal sound card?14:36
larsselavyi have also an external but i don't use it with cinelerra14:36
holsteinwhat is the device?14:36
holsteinwhen you run14:36
holsteinlspci14:36
holsteinyou can paste that one line here14:37
holsteinthe one line about the sound card14:37
larsselavy(it's an other problem i have i'll ask another time : jack doesn't recognize my external sound card)14:37
holsteinOR use http://paste.ubuntu.com/14:37
larsselavyhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/542279/14:38
larsselavyholstein,14:39
holsteinim not seeing anything obvious searching around on launchpad14:40
holsteinanyways.. let me make a few suggestions14:40
larsselavyok14:40
holsteinand you can plug through them and come back14:40
larsselavywhat? (english is not my mother language i didn't get it)14:41
holsteini think i would assume this is a cinellera issue14:41
holsteinmaybe see if there is a git version14:41
holsteinor some latest version PPA14:42
holsteinan avenue you feel comfortable with that lets you get the most recent verion of cinellera14:42
larsselavyyeah probably i think i had the same problem when i installed cinelerra the first time, some years ago on my old computer but i can't remeber what i did to solve it14:42
holsteinmaybe they have a mailing list if the IRC channel is dead14:43
holsteinafter exausting those avenues14:43
larsselavythey have a mailing list14:43
holsteinyou can try updating alsa14:43
holsteinhttp://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=6589810#post658981014:43
holsteinbut my money is on cinellera14:43
holsteinlarsselavy: about the external device and JACK14:44
holsteinyou can search here http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Matrix:Main14:44
holsteinsee if you find the device14:44
holsteinif its there, you should see info about how well alsa supports it14:44
holsteinand what hoops you need to jump through14:45
holsteinone easy-ish way to isolate the USB device is by disabling the internal sound card in the bios14:45
holsteinat least temporarily14:45
holsteinthere are a couple commands i would run in the terminal right after plugging the device in14:46
holsteinlsusb14:46
holsteinthat should list all the USB devices that the machine can see14:46
holsteinand14:47
holsteinaplay -l14:47
holsteinand14:47
holsteinarecord -l14:47
ScottLlarsselavy, do you have to use cinelerra?  you might also try openshot or blender for video editing14:47
holstein^^ those list what deivces can play and record audio, and how many inputs you have14:47
holsteinScottL: how is openshot?14:48
holsteinwhat did you use to do those vids you did?14:48
ScottLholstein, i used blender actually :)14:50
ScottLbut openshot is pretty stable from what i read, full of features, and pretty simple14:51
holsteinim going to try http://jaycut.com/14:51
ScottLisn't that the online video editing service?14:52
holsteinyeah14:52
holsteini made an account14:52
ScottLwell, it should be OS agnostic and stable :)14:53
ScottLhttp://ardour.org/taxonomy/term/23/015:28
ScottLpaul has been making lots of posts showcasing new features and changes in ardour 3.015:28
ScottLhe's probably made close to thirty in the last three or four days15:28
holsteinScottL: thats a good sign :)17:35
gnusarhas anyone of you suceeded to install ustudio as a virtual machine via virtual box? i am struggling with getting the audio line in to work.. is probably more a virtual box related issue but i thought it does not hurt to ask here17:36
holsteinyeah, this is a good place to ask gnusar17:36
holsteini dont think your going to get the performance you need in VM17:37
holsteingnusar: what is the goal?17:37
holsteinare you running windows or OSX host?17:37
gnusarholstein: i am running win7 and want to record some guitar tunes17:37
holsteini think you'd do betting with a wubi install17:37
holsteinand that is just as removable17:38
holsteinin theory17:38
holsteini had good luck with a wubi install in XP17:38
holsteinwhen i was transitioning the studio to linux17:38
gnusarsounds good.. so you were also interested in sound recording and processing?17:39
holsteinyup17:39
gnusarthank you holstein17:39
* holstein doesnt do a lot of MIDI17:40
holsteinor video17:40
holsteingnusar: check out #opensourcemusicians17:40
gnusarholstein: live shows! sounds interesting17:42
