[14:13] Hi, I have a problem with cinelerra, i don't know how to solve it. I've just change my computer, i've installed ubuntu studio with realtime core (i don't know if it's linked to my problem) and now i have a sound latency on cinelerra of almost 1 second... Any idea of the problem? [14:15] larsselavy, do you still have the -generic kernel installed? you can try booting into it and seeing if the latency changes [14:18] ScottL, I don't know if it's installed, how can I know? My computer is a new one, nothing was installed before i install ubuntu studio [14:19] larsselavy, when you boot the computer, does it show a menu or take you straight to logging in? [14:21] straight to log [14:21] ScottL, [14:21] so i suppose i don't have a generic kernel [14:21] are you familiar with the command line (also known as the terminal)? [14:21] yeah depend on what [14:22] larsselavy, just because it goes straight to log in doesn't mean you don't have other kernels, that might just be the way grub is set [14:22] i mean depend on which command lines [14:22] ok [14:24] but i don't know how to reset grub... [14:24] ScottL, [14:25] probably the most straight forward is to search in synaptic, are you familiar with synaptic larsselavy ? [14:25] i would search for 'linux-image-2' [14:25] yeah [14:26] ScottL, [14:26] this should show which kernels are installed already [14:26] larsselavy, which version of ubuntu studio did you install (e.g. lucid, maverick)? [14:26] lucid [14:26] okay, so lucid comes with a -generic kernel by default [14:27] i would presume then that you added the -realtime kernel manually [14:27] so unless you removed the -generic kernel, you should still have it [14:27] and even if you did add it you can always add the -generic again via synaptic [14:28] hey guys :) [14:28] i didn't remove it so i suppose i still have it [14:28] larsselavy: what is the output of [14:28] uname -a [14:28] in a terminal [14:28] i didn't exactly add the realtime kernel manually, it asked it at installation [14:28] larsselavy: you can post that here [14:28] its just a line [14:29] Linux Lillith 2.6.32-26-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Wed Nov 24 09:00:03 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux [14:29] holstein, [14:29] ah, larsselavy tha was asking if you wanted -realtime privelages, not install the kernel [14:29] this is to give better performance [14:29] ScottL, ah so i don't have the realtime kernel? [14:29] ok [14:30] no real-time kernel, it even shows you that with your uname -a [14:30] when you use cinelerra are you also using JACK as the sound server? [14:30] * ScottL has never used cinelerra [14:31] hi holstein :) [14:31] no alsa [14:31] hmmm, not sure why there should be latency then [14:31] mmm [14:31] shit [14:31] although you probably are using Pulse Audio on top of alsa (it's installed by default) [14:31] larsselavy: how is hte sound otherwise [14:31] ? [14:31] the* [14:32] larsselavy, you might also check either cinelerra forums or IRC channels [14:32] the sound is ok, just as it should have been holstein [14:32] careful, this channel is logged... canonical will make you put a dollar in the 'curse-word' jar ;) [14:33] holstein, ? [14:33] larsselavy: can cinelerra use JACK ? [14:34] holstein, no [14:34] interesting [14:34] i cant imagine expecting low-latency audio without using JACK in linux [14:34] as a user or a dev [14:35] holstein, maybe it's a cinelerra problem something in the settings, i don't know [14:35] larsselavy: your up to date right? [14:35] with system updates? [14:36] yes [14:36] internal sound card? [14:36] i have also an external but i don't use it with cinelerra [14:36] what is the device? [14:36] when you run [14:36] lspci [14:37] you can paste that one line here [14:37] the one line about the sound card [14:37] (it's an other problem i have i'll ask another time : jack doesn't recognize my external sound card) [14:37] OR use http://paste.ubuntu.com/ [14:38] http://paste.ubuntu.com/542279/ [14:39] holstein, [14:40] im not seeing anything obvious searching around on launchpad [14:40] anyways.. let me make a few suggestions [14:40] ok [14:40] and you can plug through them and come back [14:41] what? (english is not my mother language i didn't get it) [14:41] i think i would assume this is a cinellera issue [14:41] maybe see if there is a git version [14:42] or some latest version PPA [14:42] an avenue you feel comfortable with that lets you get the most recent verion of cinellera [14:42] yeah probably i think i had the same problem when i installed cinelerra the first time, some years ago on my old computer but i can't remeber what i did to solve it [14:43] maybe they have a mailing list if the IRC channel is dead [14:43] after exausting those avenues [14:43] they have a mailing list [14:43] you can try updating alsa [14:43] http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=6589810#post6589810 [14:43] but my money is on cinellera [14:44] larsselavy: about the external device and JACK [14:44] you can search here http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Matrix:Main [14:44] see if you find the device [14:44] if its there, you should see info about how well alsa supports it [14:45] and what hoops you need to jump through [14:45] one easy-ish way to isolate the USB device is by disabling the internal sound card in the bios [14:45] at least temporarily [14:46] there are a couple commands i would run in the terminal right after plugging the device in [14:46] lsusb [14:46] that should list all the USB devices that the machine can see [14:47] and [14:47] aplay -l [14:47] and [14:47] arecord -l [14:47] larsselavy, do you have to use cinelerra? you might also try openshot or blender for video editing [14:47] ^^ those list what deivces can play and record audio, and how many inputs you have [14:48] ScottL: how is openshot? [14:48] what did you use to do those vids you did? [14:50] holstein, i used blender actually :) [14:51] but openshot is pretty stable from what i read, full of features, and pretty simple [14:51] im going to try http://jaycut.com/ [14:52] isn't that the online video editing service? [14:52] yeah [14:52] i made an account [14:53] well, it should be OS agnostic and stable :) [15:28] http://ardour.org/taxonomy/term/23/0 [15:28] paul has been making lots of posts showcasing new features and changes in ardour 3.0 [15:28] he's probably made close to thirty in the last three or four days [17:35] ScottL: thats a good sign :) [17:36] has anyone of you suceeded to install ustudio as a virtual machine via virtual box? i am struggling with getting the audio line in to work.. is probably more a virtual box related issue but i thought it does not hurt to ask here [17:36] yeah, this is a good place to ask gnusar [17:37] i dont think your going to get the performance you need in VM [17:37] gnusar: what is the goal? [17:37] are you running windows or OSX host? [17:37] holstein: i am running win7 and want to record some guitar tunes [17:37] i think you'd do betting with a wubi install [17:38] and that is just as removable [17:38] in theory [17:38] i had good luck with a wubi install in XP [17:38] when i was transitioning the studio to linux [17:39] sounds good.. so you were also interested in sound recording and processing? [17:39] yup [17:39] thank you holstein [17:40] * holstein doesnt do a lot of MIDI [17:40] or video [17:40] gnusar: check out #opensourcemusicians [17:42] holstein: live shows! sounds interesting
