xubuntu656Xubuntu is cool!08:38
xubuntu656But here was an error...08:41
xubuntu656sudo pppoeconf Unknown terminal: unknown Check the TERM environment variable. Also make sure that the terminal is defined in the terminfo database. Alternatively, set the TERMCAP environment variable to the desired termcap entry. /usr/sbin/pppoeconf: 523: modconf: not found08:43

xubuntu656Thanks:)08:46
nicofsHow do i permanently add a new screen resolution? various tutorials guided me to /etc/X11/xorg.conf - i don't have that file...10:10
Sysiyou can create one10:11
well_laid_lawnand you can put a xrandr command in autostart10:12
well_laid_lawns/and/or/10:12
nicofswhy has this to be so damn complicated in linux?10:13
knomebecause hardware manufacturers do not release their specifications freely10:14
nicofsSysi: how do i create the .conf file?10:14
nicofsSysi: from scratch?10:14
knomenicofs, you only have to add those options you want to use10:14
nicofsknome: if there was anything there i could add them to, i'd have something to copy the format from...10:15
Sysithe base file can be created automatically, there sure is howto on internet10:15
knomehmm..10:16
knome!xorg10:16
ubottuThe X Window System is the part of your system that's responsible for graphical output. To restart your X, type « sudo /etc/init.d/?dm restart » in a console - To fix screen resolution or other X problems: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Resolution10:16
knomenicofs, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Resolution#Adding%20undetected%20resolutions10:16
Sysior: http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/create-a-xorgconf-file.html10:17
nicofsxorgconfig sounds good... but where do i get it from? it's not installed and not in the repos...10:20
nicofsah sorry... xorg -configure10:20
nicofshmm... command not found...10:21
Sysiyou need to run that when xserver is not running10:21
nicofsah...10:21

Sysiit should10:22
nicofshow do i stop x?10:22
nicofs(and restart it thereafter?)10:23
Sysitelinit 3 in virtual terminal10:24
Sysitelinit 5 back to graphical, or reboot10:24
Sysiknome: it's still bit odd that unidentified monitor can only have 800x600 res10:25
knomeSysi, yeah well, X is a mess10:25
Sysisure is10:25
nicofsmine was basically detected well... as 1920x1080... i used Arandr...10:25
nicofsbut 1080p via D-sub is madness... and my GMA950 won't cope with it anyway...10:26
Sysiyou can put lot more than that through VGA10:27
nicofsso i wanted to go down to 1280x720 - which, weirdly, was the only resolution in that massive list of available resolutions, that did not exist...10:27
nicofsi'll just do that xorg -configure thing... back in a moment... (hopefully)10:29
nicofserm... what effect should telinit 3 have? apart from none?10:30
Sysioh man have they broke that on *buntu10:31
Sysiservice gdm stop10:31
nicofsxorg still returns "command not found"10:34
knometry 'Xorg -configure'10:34
Sysisudo10:34
knomeSysi, it's Xorg, not xorg10:35
Sysii still think it need sudo10:35
nicofsknome: case sensitive... i could hurt myself... i have done that same mistake last time...10:35
knomemight need, yes10:35
nicofsback in a sec...10:35
knomeprobably does10:35
Sysiif it's writing it to right place10:36
knomeit might also just create a Xorg.conf to current dir if you're not running it as root10:36
knome(that would make sense)10:37
Sysicould be10:37
nicofsok... that worked... i'll mv the created .conf to /etc/X11...10:39
knomeSysi, a-HA! ;)10:39
Sysismarter program than me10:39
knomewell, that usually does happen even to the best of us10:40
nicofsSo... how do I add my external monitor with the resolution 1280x720 to that xorg.conf?10:43
nicofsknome, Sysi ?10:47
knomeno idea. sorry10:48
nicofsi know i need to add the modeline i need *somewhere*...10:51

laserbkHi, i've used gparted to make a 2.6GB partition and move it to the front of /dev/sda1. when i use mount to check the list of partitions mounted, sda1 is the only one, so, the main partion is still designated as sda1. i have sda1-sda5 in the dev directory, but only sda1 is mountable.20:21
laserbki get either mount: can't find /dev/sda0 in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab20:22
laserbkor mount: mount point none does not exist20:22
laserbkhow do i mount the partition i just made?20:22
laserbkand how to i view them?20:22
laserbkis there a GUI tool to do this with?20:23
