[03:52] studio wiped my passwords - what happened? [03:53] i am doing a clean install of ubuntu now [03:54] my instinct is to change passwords befofre rebooting studio - but why should I need to do that? [04:02] also the limits setting on Jack, does that affect what software gets installed? I wouldnt think so but it comes in the middle of the install [04:35] ok thanks - t&e works ... eventually [06:22] hi [06:23] testing Natty; I keep having "Cannot create thread 1 Operation not permitted" errors when starting jack with Qjackctl, though my realtime setup is done as usual [06:24] interesting... [06:24] are there new/specific things to do? [06:24] does it run? [06:24] hi holstein [06:24] OK? [06:24] hey :) [06:24] no it doesn't [06:24] :/ [06:25] ronj: have you hit up the list? [06:25] not yet [06:25] i havnet had a chance to get an install going [06:25] natty [06:25] yup [06:25] i hope to before it releases ;) [06:25] I reinstalled with todays iso and no longer have my gdm problem [06:25] AH [06:25] thats progress [06:25] and now this, but I figured I may have forgotten something... [06:26] ^^ [06:26] ronj: does sudo qjackctl do it? [06:26] just to double check permissions [06:29] uhm no [06:29] same error [06:29] and yup my user is in the "audio" group [06:30] could be some JACK thing i guess [06:30] maybe an updated package borking up the works [08:06] :O [08:06] ronj! [08:06] the same ronj who released two albums in ardour as CC? [08:07] Blank__, hello [08:07] yup [08:07] ^^ [08:08] glad you ask [08:08] ronj, I had a go at mixing a track or two from that, had to fiddle around a bit because the ardour sessions were in mono for "naked"? [08:09] Blank__, all I did till now is pure mono. I'm not at all an audio engineer, and I thought that instead of borking stereo stuff I'd rather do my best at mono stuff [08:09] ah... [08:09] one day I'll do a proper stereo album with competent people :P [08:09] ardour 2.x can't make mono masters into stereo, so i had to add a stereo buss and mix to that :P [08:10] not that i can claim to fully understand the intricacies of stereo mixing [08:10] i let a few people have a listen to it, including an audio engineer with 20 years' experience, and my mum didn't like "Lies", she thought it was too depressing :p [08:11] ^^ [08:12] and what did the engineer say? [08:12] the engineer thought it was an interesting sound, we listened to it in his studio with Mackie speakers [08:12] very... dark sounding [08:12] i pointed out it was all done with SM57/58 [08:12] wow hey you probably had better gear than I did [08:12] this was done on Logitech crap [08:12] he had Mackie HR824s [08:12] :P [08:12] ...i think that's the name of them, i don't like them, too bright [08:13] aluminium tweeters >.< [08:13] i mixed the track using Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro headphones [08:13] because my monitors are Bose 301s [08:13] :P [08:13] from the early 70s [08:14] I'm soooooooo lost in all this pro audio stuff [08:15] for my next record I'm going to take some audio engineering lessons, and do it with experienced people [08:16] Blank__, do you have some compos online? [08:17] compos? [08:17] i have a rough mix of your "Lies" track i could upload if you like [08:17] but no real compositions of my own, just random crap I recorded years ago [08:17] ok [08:18] sure I'd be glad to hear your mix [08:18] what kind of music are you into? [08:19] alternative rock, a bit of acoustic [08:19] i play guitar so naturally i like guitar-based music [08:19] k [08:19] just had to grab my phone, the mixdown was on there [08:21] Blank__, "alternative rock, a bit of acoustic" >> makes me think I just got four tickets for Godspeed You! Black Emperor in April in Montreal, I'm soooooo happy to finally see them [08:21] do you know Godspeed? [08:22] I've heard of them, but not very well [08:22] Blank__, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rsf2LoLk3SA&fmt=18 [08:22] gods [08:24] just uploading the mix now [08:24] it's ogg 192kbps [08:24] yay! [08:25] i haven't fixed the taps on the guitar yet [08:25] http://blankw.okapi.feralhosting.com/ronj/1_lies_rough_9_11_10.ogg [08:25] there's also some more stuff I want to do towards the end [08:27] I like the dynamics you added around 1:10 [08:27] yeah, i wanted it to "bite" a bit [08:27] i kept the vocals a bit bright, too [08:29] Blank__, if you wish so, send me your email, I'll have you in the loop when I start the work on my new album [08:29] oo, sounds good [08:29] there y'go [08:29] i should finish that mix, it has potential [08:30] i feel that i'm better at mastering though, as i get overwhelmed if someone throws a stack of sources to mix at me [08:31] but i liked how you put each track in an ardour session, that was easy enough to deal with [08:31] :P [08:31] Blank__, that's because I record everything separately [08:31] (I had no other choice till now) [08:31] ah yep [08:32] just sent you an email [08:32] i've had the potential to record stuff in multitrack for a while but i haven't as I don't have anything to record [08:32] but yeah, i really like your stuff [08:34] thanks :) . more to come, I have currently four new songs, and I'd like to add some beats to this [08:34] oh, nice [08:34] do something less minimalistic [08:35] yeah [08:35] spread your wings a bit :p [08:36] yup ^^ . I played two of them live just acoustic some months ago : "france" and "reborn" at http://www.youtube.com/user/ronjandfriends [22:13] Hi I'm still stuck at running Jack/Natty, help welcome. I sent an email to the devel list: https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-studio-devel/2010-December/002873.html [22:20] ronj: [22:20] can you run JACK without the firewire device? [22:20] im wondering if its JACK or FFADO [22:23] hm trying [22:37] holstein, jack works fine with alsa on my intel hda [22:39] ronj: interesting [22:39] not sure what we can learn from that... [22:39] seems like FFADO though [22:40] instead of permissions [22:40] i mean.. [22:40] or permissions [22:40] instead of JACK [22:45] holstein, what do you mean? [22:46] any ideas of other things I should test? [22:46] * holstein thinking... [22:46] :P [22:46] ronj: is the old freebob driver still there? [22:47] rrright, good idea [22:47] uh no [22:48] the menu item is there, but then "unknown driver freebob" [22:48] i think its been on the remove list for a while [22:49] gonna ask on #ardour [22:49] i would ask in #jack [22:49] maybe #ffado [22:49] the ffado mailing list [22:49] #ardour is smart too though [22:49] and active [22:49] yup
