Sarvattmdeslaur: how did nouveau 3D go for you?15:05
Sarvattunity work?15:05
mdeslaurSarvatt: yeah, unity worked. But I'm back to nvidia, unfortunately. images.google.com is basically unusable with nouveau, and when I viewed a couple of large images in firefox, all my desktop pixmaps stopped working15:07
mdeslaurSarvatt: I'll try and reproduce later to file a bug15:08
Sarvattmdeslaur: hmm, what GPU do you have?15:08
mdeslaura black one? :)15:08
mdeslaurhold on, I'll look15:08
mdeslaurNVIDIA GPU Quadro NVS 140M (G86) at PCI:1:0:0 (GPU-0)15:09
bjsniderthat is what blocked it from working, instead of compiz? i'd never have guessed15:09
bjsniderwhat about in a different browser than firefox?15:09
mdeslaurbjsnider: in chromium, images.google.com works fine15:10
bjsnideryeah, firefox on linux is a piece of crap15:10
mdeslaurbjsnider: well, it's something particular about the way firefox handles images.google.com15:11
Sarvattdon't tell me images.google.com uses webgl in firefox 4.0 now too :)15:12
bjsnideri've heard people say that firefox is faster out of wine than the native linux version, so clearly it must be optimized for windows performance15:12
mdeslaurSarvatt: I had the same images.google.com issue with firefox 3 in maverick with nouveau15:14
bjsnideri think we're really headed towards chromium as the default browser in ubuntu eventually15:15
Sarvattmdeslaur: thanks, was just curious what your experience was with the 3D side since we don't get much feedback. will try to reproduce that on my G86 when I can hijack it from the wife :)15:15
mdeslaurSarvatt: during the limited testing I did with unity, it worked great15:16
mdeslaurSarvatt: I did install libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental even if I didn't know if I needed it or not15:17
mdeslauroh, I guess I do...geforce 4 is ancient15:18
JanCbjsnider: the Mozilla binary build for linux is also faster than the one in the Ubuntu package...15:19
Sarvattyeah it was, would like to enable it by default or make it easier to install (like through jockey) at some point, we should probably put out a call for testing for it15:19
Sarvattif anything just to get more exposure that people can use unity without the blob on a livecd with it15:20
mdeslaurWould be nice to have unity working on nvidia without the binary driver15:20
Sarvattwow cairo xlib actually faster than the image backend for images.google.com on the blob15:42
Sarvatt[  0]     xlib                    firefox-4    0.148    0.150   1.84%    6/615:42

Sarvattbjsnider: just waiting for the nocompat32 release to update the blob in the PPA16:05
Sarvattthey didn't upload stuff to the FTP this time16:06
bjsnideri don't see a new driver16:24
bjsnideroh, now i see16:25
bjsniderhttp://www.nvidia.com/content/DriverDownload-March2009/confirmation.php?url=/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/260.19.29/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-260.19.29-no-compat32.run&lang=us&type=GeForce16:27
Sarvattthanks, I didn't see it anywhere16:27
bjsnideri just typed the no-compat32 part into the url figuring it might be there and it was16:29

tseliotSarvatt: are evergreen cards fully supported in Natty?17:12
Sarvatttseliot: nope17:14
Sarvatttseliot: needs a git x-x-v-ati17:14
tseliotSarvatt: ah, so mesa should be fine, right? I'm sure about drm17:15
brycehtseliot, Sarvatt, I'm writing the X.org report for this week... got anything I should include mention of?18:03
Sarvatthm, could mention the nvidia/fglrx xorg.conf thing maybe. nothing really exciting on my end18:08

hrwhi19:37
hrwdoes someone know why 'intel' driver does not load on i855 chipset in maverick?19:37
hrwit matches only vesa and fbdev.19:39
hrwwhen I used Debian 'sid' on this machine months ago all was working.19:40
hrwKMS works fine - inteldrmfb works19:40
hrwbrb19:43
* ilmari is getting occasional X hangs on resume from supend with the latest maverick kernel update (2.6.35-24.42)19:50
ilmarii915/arrandale19:51
hrwi915.... lucky you19:52
hrwi855 here - piece of crap19:53
ilmariit's actually core i7 integrated graphics ;)19:53
ilmarii915 is just the kernel driver name19:54
hrwah19:54
hrwilmari: try http://askubuntu.com/questions/4658/how-to-install-intel-82852-855gm-driver-on-ubuntu-10-10-maverick-meerkat maybe?19:55
hrwignore 855 in it - it just gives younewer driver19:56
ilmariwell, it didn't do this with the previous maverick kernel, so it seems like a regression19:56
brycehhrw, the 8xx support has been decaying upstream and accumulating regressions.  It's proven too time consuming to support in ubuntu, esp. since we don't have anyone on the ubuntu-x team with that hardware19:58
brycehilmari, I think that's a known issue... an incompatibility between the newer kernel and older -intel.  You need to update to a newer -intel to use it with the newer kernel.19:58
brycehilmari, get a newer -intel for maverick from the x-updates ppa.19:59
ilmarippa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates ?19:59
brycehthat's the one19:59
hrwbryceh: Canonical hardware lab also lacks i855 devices?20:07
hrw~curse intel for i85520:07
brycehhrw, they do not have i855, no20:08
hrwthis laptop is still fine for my wife when it comes to size/hwardware (12", pentium m 1.6GHz)20:08
brycehhowever even if they did, I'm uncertain if their testing procedures would be sufficient to catch the types of bugs we see20:09
hrwbryceh: if this can help then I can take this laptop with me for ubuntu platform rally in dallas,tx20:09
brycehhrw, no, like I said it's too time consuming to support 8xx so we pretty much don't support it anymore20:11
hrwok20:11
hrwwill have to live with fbdev then20:11
hrwgood that at least inteldrmfb works20:12
brycehit's not that we need to just fiddle a few bits to make it work, but that someone needs to sit down and do some serious debugging/development work on it, and that could take several man-weeks 20:12
hrwwaste of time then it would be20:12
brycehas well as routine and regular testing for regressions on new code drops (e.g. xorg-edgers), and working with upstream to get issues resolved20:12
hrw1.6GHz pentium m is still fast enough to do some desktop effects in software20:13
hrw5-6 years old hardware requires some sacrifice20:14
hrwbryceh: thanks for help20:16
hrwbye guys20:16
brycehhrw, sure, ssorry it isn't better news20:16
speakmanhi folks21:13
speakmanhow dow I enable TCP listening on X? I'd like to connect remotely with DISPLAY env var21:14
Sarvatt_good question, gdm sets that and I'm not seeing the option to disable it in a GUI anymore21:28
speakmanseems like it's configured in gconf nowadays?21:29
speakmanbut no idea how..21:29
Sarvatt_if it's anything like the other args passed to gdm now it might be hardcoded in the gdm source, hope thats not true..21:30
speakmanhttp://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=159010021:31
speakmanThat's not very clear...21:31
Sarvatt_speakman: ahh /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc:exec /usr/bin/X -nolisten tcp "$@"21:31
Sarvatt_speakman: looks like you can remove it from there, and change the gconf key21:32
Sarvatt_...which i'm not finding21:33
speakmanis it really hard coded..?21:33
Sarvatt_oh edit /etc/gdm/custom.conf and add [security]21:34
Sarvatt_DisallowTCP=false21:34
Sarvatt_nope, -nr is though :(21:34
speakmanexactly, but your paste of xserverrc looks scary21:34
speakman-nr ?21:34
brycehSarvatt, btw with pulling a new -ati into the archive, I'd be cool with it.  We've even shipped git snapshots of -ati with decent results in the past.22:37
brycehSarvatt, is there anything to beware of that you know of with -ati 6.13.99 if I were to pull it into ubuntu now-ish?22:38
bryceh(Or would it be better to wait until after we're all back from holidays?)22:38
Sarvattbryceh: nothing that I'm aware of, evergreen acceleration was making X crash with SIGBUS until recently but we have a fixed up kernel in natty22:39
brycehSarvatt, ok I may do the -ati merge if I have time this week22:40
bjsniderSarvatt, i can do that nvidia blob if you're busy23:38
Sarvattbjsnider: sure, thanks for that. my cable modem resets every 5-10mb uploaded and haven't been able to be without net that long today to do it23:40
bjsniderwhy the bleep does it do that?23:41
bjsnideryou must have north american internet to put up with that crap23:42
Sarvattyou know it.. I tried to upload it on 3G earlier but apparently they dont let you upload more than 30MB at once on it, yay t-mobile23:43
bjsniderwhat is your ISP's pathetic excuse for the cable modem issue?23:44
Sarvattthey're comcast23:45
bjsniderthat's what they said? "we're comcast"?23:46
Sarvattgot a fios install schedule for next month, goodbye comcast :)23:46
brycehyay!23:47
brycehyeah comcast sucks, although thats a level of suckatude I hadn't experienced when I was on it23:48
Sarvattbryceh: the only gotcha I forsee with an ati checkout..23:50
Sarvattthey are doing funky version bumps23:50
Sarvattthey change the version on master from 6.13.99 down to 6.13.x, release, then bump it back up to 6.13.99 after23:51
brycehhuh23:51
Sarvattnot sure if it should be 6.13.3 for a git snapshot23:51
Sarvattguess we can check what fedora is doing23:51
brycehyeah23:51
Sarvattsorry I was in a call when you asked earlier and forgot to mention that23:52
Sarvatt  84 * Wed Dec 01 2010 Dave Airlie <airlied@redhat.com> 6.13.2-0.3.20101201gite142e55c523:52
Sarvatt6.13.3 is probably going to be newer than our 6.13.99 checkout if we do it normally looking at what they did with 6.13.[12]23:55
