tsimpsonracines: probably 2GB+ for a GUI install07:16
racinesDarnit07:17
andrewh192my usb install is on a 1GB07:17
racineswow07:17
andrewh192and its Kubuntu 10.1007:17
racinesreally?07:17
andrewh192yeah07:17

andrewh192not sure07:17
racineso_o07:17
racinesnot sure? lol07:17
andrewh192not really sure which means what07:17
racineswell did you install it or are you just using live?07:18
andrewh192it boots from the usb drive07:18
andrewh192and starts the install07:18
andrewh192not really sure how much stuff is on the usb though07:18
racinesI just tried to install PCLinuxOS onto my 2GB USB and it said the USB wasn't large enough07:18
andrewh192prolly mostly gets it from the net07:18
tsimpsonyou can run the live CD in "persistent" mode from a USB stick, where the live CD boost, but you can save files/settings etc07:18
racinesBut how?07:19
tsimpsonor you can do a "real" install on the USB stick/drive, like a normal HDD07:19
racinesyeah I know07:19
racinesI tried07:19
racineswell I didn't use kubuntu, I tried with PCLinuxOS07:19
tsimpson!persistence07:19
ubottuTo have some persistent storage when using a Live CD, follow the instructions on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCDPersistence07:19
racineshowever it said it needed more space on my 2GB USB07:19
andrewh192tsimpson: you talking about running a partition of ur hard drive on ubuntu07:19
andrewh192directly erasing the whole hard drive and have only one main partition07:19
andrewh192that what ur talking about tsimpson07:20
tsimpsonandrewh192: no, running the LiveCD image from a USB drive and having the ability to save data on the drive07:20
andrewh192oh07:20
racinesTsimpson, isn't live/persistent mode technically......slower?07:20
tsimpsonindeed07:21
andrewh192yeah07:21
racinesI thought if I installed it onto my USB it would be faster, however I don't even have enough space =/07:21
andrewh192i know what ur talking about now07:21
racines2GB USB07:21
tsimpsonit will be faster than running from CD, but slower than a HDD install07:21
andrewh192ur saying instead of installing it on ur computer, period, u would sttrictly use it off of the usb drive07:21
tsimpsonand slower than a "real" install on USB too07:21
andrewh192i am confused07:22
andrewh192well sorta anyway07:22
andrewh192i think i know whaat ur talking about07:22
racinesWell basically I want to know if there is a way I can install Kubuntu 10.10 onto my USB and load it from anywhere that allows bootable USBs?07:22
racineswithout using live/persistence, because thats slow07:22
mokushracines: well just use unbootin, and don't enable persistance07:23
racinesWell no. I want the ability to save my work.07:23
tsimpsonmake sure you delete any partitions on your USB drive, if you have more than 107:23
racinesOh hm07:23
racinesIt's a 2GB USB07:23
racineswould it be able to install kubuntu?07:23
tsimpsonsometimes a 2GB USB drive isn't 2GB07:23
tsimpsoncheck exactly how large the drive is, "sudo fdisk -l" should tell you07:24
racineslinux says its 2048MB o_o07:26
racinesso I'm guessing a 2GB USB isn't big enough =/07:30
tsimpsontry with Ubuntu or Kubuntu, 2GB should be enough for a full install07:31
tsimpsonif not, try a server install and add GUI parts later07:31
racineswell07:34
racinesI didn't use kubuntu, I tried PCLinuxOS and it wasn't big enough07:34
racinesI was just worried kubuntu may not work07:34
tsimpsonall the documentation I find says 2GB should be enough07:34
tsimpson(for Ubuntu and Kubuntu)07:35
racinesokay07:35
racinesomg07:40
racinesidk what happened but I formatted my USB and now it has 1.64GB instead of 1.9GB07:40
racineso_o07:40
tsimpsonjust clear the partition table, something like "sudo fdisk /dev/sdb", "o", then "w" (if /dev/sdb is the USB disk)07:41
racinesokay thanks07:42
tsimpson"o" creates a new empty partition table, "w" writes it out07:42
tsimpsonthen you can let the installer create the partitions after07:43
racinesfdisk doesnt seem to have parameters "o" or "w"07:51
racinesalso when I plug in my USB there are two things, "sdb2" and "sdb5" ....Hmm07:51
tsimpsonfirst run "sudo fdisk /dev/whatever.."07:52
tsimpsonthen type o (enter)07:52
tsimpsonthen w (enter)07:52
tsimpsonthen q07:52
racines"sdb2" -> "Extended" , "sdb5" -> "Linux swap / Solaris"07:52
tsimpsonit's menu driven07:52
racinesI'm guessing I do it to both sdb2 and sdb5?07:52
tsimpsonno, on the disk, not the partition (/dev/sdb)07:53
racinesthere is no sdb, I think sdb1 is my hard drive (laptop HDD), and sdb2 and sdb5 is my USB07:53
tsimpsonafter you write (w), you should notice /dev/sdb2 and /dev/sdb5 disappear07:53
tsimpson/dev/sda would be the HDD07:54
racinesOh hm07:54
racinesso...........just......sdb?07:54
racinesI hope it doesn't erase anything on my laptop HDD =/07:54
tsimpsonthere should be a /dev/sdb, that's the "disk" as linux sees it07:54
tsimpsonif you want to make sure, remove the USB drive and /dev/sdb should disappear07:54
=== Jade is now known as robertdq
racinesscrew it, I'll just use gparted07:55
tsimpsonreally "sudo fdisk /dev/sdb", "o", "w", "q", is much quicker ;)07:55
racinesits not working07:55
tsimpsonyou'll want to make sure nothing on the disk is mounted, gparted will fail too in that case07:56
racines"WARNING: DOS-compatible mode is deprecated. It's strongly recommended to switch off the mode (command 'c') and change display units to sectors (command 'u')07:56
racines"07:56
tsimpsonjust ignore that stuff, it's only a warning07:56
racinesThat error is given after the following command: "sudo fdisk /dev/sdb"07:56
tsimpsonwarning != error07:56
racinesyeah but07:56
tsimpsonbut nothing! ;)07:57
tsimpsonit really doesn't matter if it's a DOS partition table or not, Grub will handle it just fine07:57
racineswhen I do "o": "Warning: invalid flag 0x0000 of partition table 5 will be corrected by w(rite)"07:57
racinesI'm guessing I do "w" now?07:57
tsimpsonyep07:57
racinesnow o?07:57
tsimpsontype "p" and see what's there07:58
tsimpson(p prints the partition table)07:58
tsimpsonit should list no partitions07:58
racinesokay07:59
racinesso I should be able to do a fresh install?07:59
tsimpsonyeah07:59
tsimpsonwhen it comes to selecting where to install, you just choose the USB drive, and make sure you also install Grub to the USB drive08:00
tsimpsonyou may have to click some "Advanced" button or something08:00
tsimpsonbeen a while since I did a fresh install08:00
racinesI've searched before about GRUB but never really got a straight forward answer. Do you have a noob answer to the question: "What is GRUB?"08:03
racineslol08:03
tsimpsonGRUB = Grand Unified Boot Loader08:03
tsimpson-> GRand08:03
tsimpsonit does one of 2 things08:03
tsimpsonit either loads the kernel and tells is where the root filesystem is, or loads another boot loader (eg the windows boot loader), which does its own thing08:04
racinesoh okay08:04
racinesOh wow, the Kubuntu installer isn't showing my USB as an option08:04
racinesonly shows my laptop's HDD, hm08:05
racinesWell, instead of the default option: "Install alongside other operating systems", I chose "Specify partitions manually (advanced)"08:07
racinesand now I clicked on my USB on the partition table (now called: /dev/sdc)08:08
racineschose: /dev/sdc as my Boot Loader08:08
racinesand got this error:08:08
racines"No rot file system is defined. Please correct this from the partitioning menu"08:08
racinesroot*08:08
tsimpsonyou need to create some partitions first08:09
tsimpsonyou need a / (root) and a swap, you may also want a separate /home08:09
tsimpsonI'd suggest ext3 for both / and /home08:09
racinesso......Ext3 journaling file system ?08:10
tsimpsonor ext4 if it's there, apparently ext4 is even less error prone08:10
tsimpsonyeah08:10
racinesMount point: /, then do it again except this time make the mount point: "/home" ?08:10
tsimpsonyep08:10
racinesor do I just need one that has the mount point as: "/"08:10
racineshm okay08:11
tsimpsonyou only _need_ /, but /home is recommended08:11
tsimpson/home will be where you save all your files, / will be for system files (like programs and stuff)08:11
racines...omg....the "Add" button is greyed out08:11
tsimpsonyou'll need to make sure you don't assign / all the available space ;)08:12
racinesoh08:12
tsimpsonand save about 500MB-1GB for swap08:12
racinesit doesn't give me the option to edit storage....08:13
tsimpsonjust delete the partition you made, nothing has been written to disk yet08:13
racinesokay back to square one, /dev/sdc now has a partition known as: "free space"08:13
racinesAh okay08:14
racinesso about 500MB for swap, rest for /home (ext3) ?08:14
tsimpsonsave some for /08:15
racinesugh i'm confused08:15
tsimpsonyou should have / first, then /home, then swap at the end of the disk08:15
tsimpsonor, just have one big /, then swap at the end (simpler)08:16
racineshm so I just have to make sure I have at least 500MB left for swap?08:16
tsimpsonyes08:16
racinesWas I supposed to set / and /home to the beginning, and swap area to the end yes?08:17
racinesI also made them all "logical" partitions...is this okay too?08:18
tsimpsonthat's fine08:19
racinesis swap necessary? I tried installing and it said I needed 2.1GB on the "/" partition uh oh08:20
tsimpsontechnically is not, but recommended08:20
racinesDarn.....I guess you can't do it on a 2.00GB USB08:21
racinessays it needs 2.1, though it gives me the option to continue, says it may error...08:21
tsimpsonI guess you can try a server install, and then add some GUI parts, but it's messy08:23
=== david is now known as Guest3800

racinesWell whether it installs or not, let's assume it does, and then I get another USB with more storage, will I be able to migrate my saved work from my 2GIG to the large USB?08:30
racinesor is not possible?08:30
racinesand by that I mean, migrate the entire installation alongside my saved work08:30
tsimpsonnot easily, you'd need to backup or just install to the new disk and copy files over08:31

chiiiiizhello!!!11:13

yofelwell, what's the question? (I don't use enlightment though)11:14
chiiiiizi have installed E17, but it does not appear in the session list at kdm login... I still only have Default, KDE, and Failsafe...11:15
yofelchiiiiiz: do you have e17-data installed? Should appear then11:16
chiiiiizI do not know, I am following a howto, that compiles from sources...11:17

yofelthen I'm not sure what's wrong, as kdm looks for those files to generate the desktop env list11:20

ocsd_ed: it seems that this problem is associated to ext412:48
d_edI can't think of any sensible cause then.12:48
yofelocs: the file system kept the file in disk cache (ext4 for a few minutes) before actually writing it to disk and only writes the file metadata immediately12:48
yofelso if you have a crash immediatly after writing the file any didn't sync the disk before that you'll end up with an empty file12:49
yofels/any/and/12:49
ocsyofel: good. is there a wat to force sync the cache for a particular file?12:50
ocsafter I have written it12:50
yofelwell, from the commandline there's the 'sync' command which will simply sync all disks, or use an editor that uses fsync() on the file after writing it12:50
yofel(now don't ask me which one does that, I only know that vim does)12:51
ocsyofel: is sync automatically invoked after boot?12:52
yofelocs: ok, short explenation: the file system keeps files in the cache before writing them so it can write more files in one go instead of writing to the disk all the time, so files are synced to the disk after a while, when you sync the disks manually or when you unmount the drive (on shutdown for example)12:53

ahox_Hi, how do I tell the kde speller to ignore case? Or at least accept upper-case words when at the start of a sentence?14:18
ahox_AFAIR kde uses aspell, however, it seems to ignore my ~/.aspell.conf file14:19

BloodyRain2khi, I somehow can't connect to wireless networks anymore over the icon in the tray bar, the one with the lan port and the cable. Now nothing works, no auto connecting, nothing happens when I click a network in the list, it only lists networks in range and thats it. My...16:17

shannon_hello17:01
shannon_I'm really new to linux and I just want to make a file that executes a single command in console and stays open in the console that I can link to on the desktop17:02
James147shannon_: right click kmenu > Edit menu (or run "kmenueidt")  from there you can add an entry to the menu to execute the program you want, and tell it to run in a terminal17:07
James147shannon_: it will att it to the menu, but then you can drag it to the desktop or panel if you want17:08
shannon_okay thanks17:08
shannon_whoops I accidently delete terminal from the kmenu, o gosh how do I put it back17:12
shannon_restored to default that did it17:13
shannon_how do I give it an icon?17:18
DarthFrogshannon_:  I'd try this: sudo apt-get install --reinstall konsole17:19
shannon_oh I got terminal I just added my program to the menu17:19
shannon_and it doesnt have an icon17:19
shannon_its wvdial17:19
DarthFrogAre you using kmenuedit?17:20
shannon_yes17:20
DarthFrogCreate a program launcher script for wvdial, give that script an icon and add it to the menu.17:21
shannon_how do I do that? is it anything like writing a bat file for dos?17:22
DarthFrogIt could be.  Or you could just right-click on the Desktop, and select "Create New.."17:22
shannon_it has "new widget"17:23
DarthFrogLink to application.17:23
DarthFrogThat will create a .desktop file in ~/Desktop.  You can then move that file anwhere to get it off your desktop.  Then use kmenuedit to add it to your menu.17:24
shannon_ah I have a link to it now. but it has a question mark for an icon17:25
DarthFrogClick on that question mark and select an icon for it.17:25
DarthFrogHmm, it's changed.  Clicking on the icon does nothing.  Instead, click on the wrench icon on the right side, then click on the icon in the configuration panel that pops up.17:27

joshymy "applet" for messaging disappeared. How i get it back? (Applet for kopete / kmail ...)20:08
joshy<aseigo> joshy: if it was in the system tray area, then open up the system tray configuration (right click on it is the swiftest way, though in 4.6 you can also get to it via the toolbox) and there's a page listing applets you can show in it20:20
progre55hi guys. on my kde, when I log in, the desktop effects are suspended, and when I want to resume them, it says "they have been suspended by another application, you can resume using alt+shit+f12" but still nothing happens. any suggestions, please?20:20
James147progre55: try going to System Settings > Desktop Effects and resuming them there (or seeing what it says)20:21
progre55James147: tried that already, and kmix says "couldnt resume: blur, etc, etc" pretty much all the settings20:23
progre55oh I mean, kwin20:23
James147progre55:  you could try it on a new user, see if you get the same problem... that will tell you if it s a problem with your config files20:24
progre55damn, do I need to add a user now? =)20:25
James147progre55: "sudo adduser USERNAME" will do that... but its the safest way to test a clean config (you could rename .kde, but that isent as safe)20:25
progre55yeah I know how to add a user =) will do that now..20:26
progre55James147: so, with the new user, it says: Failed to activate DE using the given conf options. check your X conf. etc"20:29

MaDxCrEaMok, posted in ubuntu channel, maybe should post here since a kubuntu question21:11
MaDxCrEaMI have my ntfs drives automounted in kubuntu using the removable devices when booting, but it asks for password for each drive. A way to enter my password somewhere so it does it automatically without my needing to enter password?21:11
=== donald is now known as Guest35110
James147MaDxCrEaM: not very fimilar with the way kde auto mounts things... but as a work around you could mount it at boot by adding an entry to /etc/fstab (I would recoment using the ntfs-config util for doing this)21:13
MaDxCrEaMthanks will try that James14721:14

MaDxCrEaMnevermind, unmounted them21:21
dacjoin @ ubuntu21:21
James147MaDxCrEaM: "sudo umount /path/to/mount/point" or "sudo umount /dev/sdXY" (not, umount not unmount)21:21

Lugia010719d1How can i change my root and user password in kubuntu?21:32
James147Lugia010719d1: you should not set a root password (instead you should just use sudo)... you can change your password by system settings > Account details (or anyone password in System settings > User Managment)   or in a terminal by executing "passwd"21:33
