greg-gI was just going to bring up his wiki page/LP page to look for an alternate IRC name, but they're being slow for me01:00
greg-gwell, I'll get it started now that it is time, and we'll come back if he shows up01:01

greg-gHello and welcome to the Ubuntu Membership Review Board for the Americas meeting for December. The wiki page for the Review Board is available here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Membership/RegionalBoards/Americas01:01
greg-gWe will attempt to get through all of the applicants that have added themselves to that list before today's meeting. If we are unable to make it through the entire list due to time constraints, then at the next meeting we will pick up where we left off.01:01
greg-gThe format for the meeting is as follows: We will go through the list of applicants one by one, by date of application (FIFO).01:01
greg-gEach applicant should introduce themselves (1-5 sentences) and provide links to their Ubuntu Wiki page. After the introduction the members of the Membership Review Board will review the pages and, if needed, ask the applicant further questions.01:01
greg-gDuring this time it is encouraged for other members of the community to show their support for the applicant. Do not be alarmed if the members of the Membership Review Board are quiet during this time; they are most likely reading wiki/launchpad/forum/other pages and deciding how they are going to vote.01:01
greg-gWhen the board is ready to vote, they will publicly vote in the channel with either +1, 0, or -1 (for membership, abstain, and against membership, respectively). If the sum of those numbers is positive, then the applicant is now an official Ubuntu member! (feel free congratulate them!)01:02
greg-gNow, with any further ado, lets get started with the first applicant...01:02
greg-g[TOPIC] jderose01:02
MootBotNew Topic:  jderose01:02
greg-gjderose: go ahead, please, if you don't mind, since Vikram isn't here01:02
jderosegreg-g: just introduce myself then?01:03
greg-gyep01:03
jderoseokay, name is Jason DeRose. started using Debian around 2000, switched to Ubuntu at its 3rd release or so01:03
greg-gand if anyone else has anything to add about jderose, please feel free :)01:04
jderosei've had varrying levels of involvement with ubuntu at times when my day job kept me too busy, but i've always stayed somewhat involved01:05
akshatjjderose is Python tutor of akshatj ;)01:05
greg-gjderose: cool, what types of things were you involved with?01:05
greg-gakshatj: thanks :) It sounds like you got a good tutor, from the projects he's working on01:05
jderosegreg-g: always try to file lots of high quality bugs, and i was an early bzr + launchpad user01:06
greg-gnice01:06
jderosehave advocated its use to many, have got many started with bzr01:06
faganjderose is doing some great work on novacut too01:06
doctormojderose knows what creative commons is and supports copyleft/open source style licenses in the creative world.01:06
pleia2great :)01:06
nhandlerjderose: I see you idle in #ubuntu-us-co. Are you active with the LoCo?01:06
greg-gyou know the right phrases to pull my strings, don't you, doctormo ? ;)01:06
jderosegreg-g: yeah, and now i'm all about making ubuntu the best platform for pro video01:06
jderosenhandler: not active yet, just getting to know people... went to 10.10 release party that loco put on... Steve Coast just happen to be there :)01:07
greg-gjderose: yeah, I've been impressed with the novacut project, even if my blog post didn't get you full funding on KS ;)01:07
fagannovacut is very exciting and jderose went to the last UDS to get the Ubuntu community involved01:07
jderosegreg-g: ah, greg, hi... didn't know your irc name :)01:07
pleia2jderose: I was at a school last night and was asked about high performance video editing in linux, optimistic about the future?01:07
akshatjjderose, I found Novacut by greg-g's blog post01:08
jderosepleia2: well, i'm optismistic about future, but i'm biased :)01:08
skaet_dhi, my name is Kate Stewart.   I started out helping robbiew with 10.10, and working on natty right now01:08
nhandlerjderose: I also saw you helped to teach the basics of packaging to someone. Have you done any patching/packaging type work in Ubuntu?01:08
greg-gjderose: yeah, I keep my nicks as simple as possible ;)01:08
nhandlerskaet_d: We'll get to you in a few minutes01:08
doctormojderose: also did lots of work at UDS by doing really good interviews.01:09
* skaet_d is on an interface that sucks and appoligises.01:09
jderosepleia2: i think Ubuntu/Linux is well positioned for video because the biggest problems pro video faces is really storage and scalability... problems we're well equiped to handle as you know, linux runs the internet and all :)01:09
pleia2jderose: indeed! good to hear01:10
jderosegreg-g: anyway, did i cover enough, anything specific you want me to answer?01:11
greg-gI think nhandler had a question01:11
nhandlerjderose: Can you answer my last question?01:11
nhandler1292548105 19:08:25 < nhandler> jderose: I also saw you helped to teach the basics of packaging to someone. Have you done any patching/packaging type work in Ubuntu?01:11
jderosenhandler: so i've always packaged my own projects and published in PPA... so i'm quite comfortable packaging Python apps...01:12
akshatjnhandler, jderose also helped manish package zeitgeist-sharp01:12
jderosenhandler: but i haven't done much in official packaging yet, although i'm excited to01:12
nhandlerjderose: I would definitely look into that if you already know about packaging. They can always use more help.01:13
jderosenhandler: i'm working on getting python-skein into ubuntu, have been talking to upstream author01:13
greg-gcool01:13

greg-g[TOPIC] skaet_d01:15
MootBotNew Topic:  skaet_d01:15
skaet_dhi01:15
greg-gskaet_d: please introduce yourself :)01:15
skaet_dsorry about the early post01:16
greg-gno problem01:16
skaet_dive come from an embedded linux backgound01:17
pleia2skaet_d: I was at the linux collaboration summit too, shame we missed each other01:18
skaet_dam learning ubuntu and doing my besat to ramp and help out with the releases now.01:19
greg-gskaet_d: as you came from an embedded linux background, does that mean you were a developer or something else?01:19
* nhandler would also like to thank skaet_d for adding details of her contributions to her wiki page :)01:20
skaet_di managed FSL powerpc contribs for last 10 yrs01:20
beunoskaet_d, so, peeking at your launchpad page, you've created an account only back in August01:21
beunoskaet_d, what's prompting you to apply for membership?01:21
skaet_dpleia2, sorry we missed each other too.01:21
skaet_dbueno since im doing the release it seemed logical to be a member :)01:22
nhandlerskaet_d: Have you done any LoCo work?01:23
* fagan remembers skaet_d did some great work last cycle doing the release work 01:23
skaet_dbueno, yup only joined in  Aug.  Before that I managed LTIB distrp01:25
* skaet_d thanks fagan01:26
beunoskaet_d, do you feel the Ubuntu community is different from others?01:26
skaet_dnhandler no, attended event in london but thats a part of community im learning about01:27
skaet_dbueno, yes very different.  am enjoying it01:29
skaet_dembedded was fragmented01:29
beunoskaet_d, so what's different about it?01:30
skaet_dnot as much  collaboration.01:30
greg-gin the embedded field, interesting01:31
greg-gpossible due to the heavier influence of corporations than individuals, I'd guess01:32
skaet_dyup01:32
skaet_dhardware access played a role01:32
skaet_dno equivalent of code of conduct either....01:33
greg-gwe do love our CoC here01:34
beunoskaet_d, so, you've been doing an awesome job as release manager01:34
beunopumping in lots of energy!01:35
beunothank you for doing that01:35
skaet_di like the culture it creates01:35
beunoskaet_d, I do feel, though, it's a bit too early01:35
skaet_dbueno,thanks!!!01:35
beunoone of the requirements is a sustained contribution01:35
beunoand while you've done that in these 4 months, very well so01:36
beunoit feels like spending a bit more time getting involved in more areas, absorbing more of the community01:36
beunowould put you in smooth position to fly through this process01:36
beunohow wouuld you feel of re-applying in a couple of months?01:37
skaet_dhmm01:37
beunoI think we all agree that you're doing great, but feel a few more months under your belt would nail it01:37
greg-gyes, the private channel was in agreement that your contributions are looking splendid, but we've had to come up with a set definition of "sustained contributions" for other applicants and 6 months was what was decided.01:38
skaet_dwould be nice to be able to release from Ubuntu  id... but will live with what is decided01:39
greg-gI understand, totally, but this is, I believe, the most fair thing for everyone who has applied under the same rules of "sustained contribution"01:39
nhandlerskaet_d: I don't think most people will care. And if you keep up the great work, you very well might be an Ubuntu Member by the 11.04 release :)01:40
* greg-g agrees01:40
beunoskaet_d, I want to stress that this in no way is a reflection on your work or contributions, it's just time is a hard thing to bend  :)01:40
faganits a shame but im sure it will only be a matter of time, I really liked all the fresh energy that skaet_d put into the job :)01:41
skaet_di just applied now because jono and robbiew s01:42
skaet_dsuggested it01:42
greg-gI understand, and I think it should be made clear to managers at Canonical that the membership boards are bound by a "sustained contribution" criteria :/01:43
doctormohey jcastro01:43
jderosei'm impressed that even canonical employees must go through same process... but obviously 6 month limit needs to be more clearly communicated to new hires :)01:43
greg-gis Vikram here yet?01:44
skaet_dyup01:44
dindaskaet_d: it never hurts to apply but most folks wait until they feel they are ready and have shown good community contributions01:44
greg-galright, well, thanks everyone for coming to this meeting and congrats to jderose !01:44
greg-g#endmeeting01:44
MootBotMeeting finished at 19:44.01:44
greg-gskaet_d: I'm serious about you re-applying sometime this cycle01:45

jderosethanks fagan, thanks for endorsement :)01:46
skaet_dthanks greg-g01:46

faganlater guys and gals01:46
jderosegreg-g: so what do i need to do now, if anything, as far as my membership?01:47
jderosehi dnielsen_!01:47
greg-gjderose: I just added you to the LP team, which means you can now add yourself to the planet (there's a wiki page on that somewhere)01:47
pleia2jderose: your @ubuntu.com address will become active in a couple of days (there is a script that generates them every few days)01:48
jderosegreg-g: fagan was telling me that i should request a irc cloak also?01:48
greg-gand if you want an "ubuntu/member/jderose" cloak on IRC, there's a way of getting that (another wiki page)01:48
jderoseokay, wiki pages it is then :)01:48
greg-gyeah, not sure were the instructions are right now, I actually have to run, though. I'm sure google knows :)01:48

robbiewwow...so you all blocked skaet because she hasn't been involved for 6mo....KNOWING in 2 more months she's practically automatic....seriously people...I'm all for not automatically approving Canonical employees, but she's the damn release manager!  I quote from the Ubuntu wiki on membership, "While there is no precise period that we look for, it is rare for applications to be accepted from people contributing for less04:21

apwWe are progressing on our natty-alpha-2 items, but as a number of smaller natty-alpha-1 items bled over we are somewhat over (but returning towards) the line currently.  The remaining pushed out items are listed with background on the overall status above (first link).  Overall burndown we are well below the line, so we should be able to catch up.16:21
apwOf the bugs called out on the agenda: #542660 requires more testing and is not yet forthcoming; #566437 looks to only affect a limited number of upgrades from karmic, investigation continues; #600453 looks likely a gfxpayload=keep issue, testing requested; #681866 is likely a _boot_ issue too and testing with gfxpayload=keep requested; #682617 looks to be a pulseaudio/alsa configuration issue, and awaits testing; #684304 looks to be a device discovery16:21
apw issue and we may have identified the patch required to resolve this; and #630748 requires a firmware fix from Intel which is not yet available.16:21
apwThe main distro kernel is now rebased forward to mainline v2.6.37-rc6 and published.  The kernel carries further fixes for the NX issues we have been seeing as well as an ext4 corruption fix (which triggers under very high load).  All of the Ubuntu drivers are finally re-enabled in this upload.16:21

cjwatsonhttp://people.canonical.com/~platform/workitems/natty/canonical-foundations.html - still below the trend line but becoming a bit more of a fight to stay that way, mostly due to late work items16:27
MootBotLINK received:  http://people.canonical.com/~platform/workitems/natty/canonical-foundations.html - still below the trend line but becoming a bit more of a fight to stay that way, mostly due to late work items16:27
cjwatsonMatthias asked me to pass on this Python update:16:27
cjwatsonhttps://wiki.ubuntu.com/FoundationsTeam/ReleaseStatus/Natty - 2 out of 6 alpha-2 milestoned bugs fixed today, still more work needed16:27
cjwatson<doko> python2.7: the archive should be in a state where it is upgradable without removing any packages (except for a handful).16:27
cjwatson<doko> people upgrading from maverick should first upgrade to -updates16:27
cjwatson<doko> people upgrading from early natty should be aware of https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/python2.7/+bug/68930616:27
ubottuUbuntu bug 689306 in python2.7 (Ubuntu) "package python2.7-minimal 2.7.1-1ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 3" [Medium,Confirmed]16:27
cjwatson<doko> I plan to send a followup on the python upgrade this weekend16:27
cjwatson<doko> outstanding packages are: ethos, gapti, python-drizzle, python-hildon (removal request filed), xen-3.316:27
cjwatson<doko> the next step would be looking at packages which only depend on python2.6/libpython2.6 and address these16:27
cjwatson<doko> after that, we could try to remove 2.6, or delay that for the sprint16:27
cjwatsonOther feature news this week:16:27
cjwatson - GRUB should now be picking a better resolution and setting a background colour that matches plymouth; blacklist infrastructure is waiting in NEW; text-free boot should now be well on its way16:27
cjwatson - debconf ported to GtkAssistant, getting rid of libgnome2-perl (thanks janimo and pitti)16:27
cjwatson - component-mismatches looking much cleaner now than last week16:27
cjwatson - new upstart release: manual stanza, debug stanza, new properties to support bridges and visualisation, new signals to support plymouth integration16:28
cjwatson  - on their way: socket activation (draft code), chroot and user sessions (draft code), override files (WIP)16:28
cjwatson..16:28
skaetcjwatson, re: workitems, thanks.   do we need to start to look at moving some to alpha3?16:28
cjwatsonthat's the cycle-wide graph16:28
skaetack16:28
cjwatsonwe may need to start looking at deferring some, but would prefer to do that at the sprint16:29
skaetsounds reasonable.16:29
skaetwhat's coverage going to be like over the next 2 weeks from the foundations team?16:29

dbarthstatus report as usual16:59
dbarthso we're landing today 3.2.8, the new weekly update of unity16:59
dbarthbasically we're getting to the end of the launcher development and should be pretty much feature complete now17:00
dbarthsimilarly, the panel got a big update as well with the integration of the latest global menu specification17:00
dbarthon the bug front, we're struggling with compiz bugs17:00
dbarthnew bugs, on the new codebase, which explains why we're not really on the old codebase bugs17:01
dbarthtoday the challenge is to resolve some really weird regressions with window z-order being rather... well interesting, but not terribly usable17:01
skaetheh17:02
dbarthon the foundations side, ie dbusmenu et al, libdee finally landed with a shinny new gdbus backend17:02
dbarthtesting, we have startup perf. counters finally in unity and soon compiz as well; we can draw pretty graphs17:03
dbarthwe'll have a synthetic perf. indicator next week17:03
skaetneat17:03
dbarththat's about it for this week17:03
skaet..?17:04
skaet;)17:04
dbarthoh, and we've just finalized some reinforcement plans for a11y which has proved more difficult than expected17:04
dbarthso the situation should improve early in January17:04
dbarthuh, bug front, ie milestoned bugs: they haven't changed since last week, but we haven't really moved on them either; they were on the old codebase, and we're struggling on the new one now mostly17:05
dbarthquestions?17:05
skaetThanks for the explanation about the bugs earlier was wondering about that influx this week.  :p17:05
marjodbarth: do you plan to go back and work on those old bugs, or do you intend to close them as invalid?17:05
