[00:00] gonna obviously miss the meeting tonight. [14:16] so meeting - did anyone go? [14:17] I did not [14:18] traffic was horrible just from Annapolis to Pasadena let alone driving up 32 to Columbia === joeyk is now known as ikkles [14:26] hmm. [14:27] thank ikkles [14:27] the irc and the forums are pretty low-activity [14:38] hi Broam [14:38] hey JonathanD [14:38] How goes man? [14:38] it's gettin cold out. [14:38] Workin'. Mostly RSS feeds & updating old asp pages. It's a living [14:38] I'd rather be hacking on a free or emerging-as-free telephony platform [14:39] Broam: come hang with me and ikkles when we start our business. [14:39] I'm listening... [14:39] Oh, I didn't mean we had a plan :p [14:40] oh. [14:40] It's not completely impossible, though, I suppose ;) [14:40] a friend keeps pushing me into having a side business of "Phones you Own" - rooted & unlocked, etc. [14:41] after finding my wife a G1 for $20, unlocking it (another $15) [14:41] and then rooting/modding the heck out of it [14:42] heh :D [14:42] Broam: I'd like to get to small business network building. [14:42] sounds like a fun time [14:42] like, 20-50 user stuff. [14:43] that seems doable. [14:43] I might start with nonprofits. [14:43] One of my ongoing projects is this thing I have setup in the basement... [14:43] continue; [14:43] I have a windows network, AD, exchange, file, print, and a handful of apps... [14:43] 5 workstations. [14:43] this is all virtual, of course. [14:44] and 4 servers, with redundancy on critical apps. [14:44] I'm attempting to duplicate every piece of functionality using ubuntu as a base. [14:44] cool. [14:44] So I have some documentation on what the fake business does, what the workflow is, etc. [14:45] I've not gotten very far with it really :) [14:45] I have the VMs, and I've built most of the windows network functions that will eventually be duped. [14:45] well having organized plans is actually something important. [14:45] Pre-built procedures for doing X or Y...plus documentation of what was performed [14:46] if your mail server goes down do this [14:46] exactly. [14:46] network-in-a-can [14:46] Documentation is key ;) [14:47] customer has these needs... [14:47] 1. Can we meet them, and 2. Which procedures do we take to get there. [14:48] and document any changes from the standard deployment [14:48] I've worked under such a model before. When I did the IBM stuff. [14:48] I think I've discovered a key training method, too. [14:48] continue? [14:49] The first task given to a new hire in such an organization should be a "fix" that requires the good docs you already have. [14:49] Probably the first several. [14:50] By the time the new hire walks into an implementation, they'll have performed several fixes using previous docs, and hopefully realize why they are important. [14:50] I like that. [14:50] if they bother to read tfm [14:51] Pretty much without fail, documentation improved AFTER someone had to fix something and didn't have it. Then they would go on a stint of improving it (often without billing since it's "make up work") [14:51] well, likewise, first few fixes should be mentored. [14:51] I know I was. [14:52] Couple guys at that job told me they'd come work for me if I ever went into business myself, so it's sort of been in the back of my mind since then. [14:53] sounds like a plan [14:56] In good time, I suppose. [14:56] Need funds first :) [18:59] hey jbicha [18:59] howdy [18:59] how's your friday? [19:00] howdy jbicha [19:00] fine, snow is kinda fun [19:03] my wife just got a job [19:03] 6mo internship [19:04] doing what? [19:05] I'm looking for a job too [19:06] I think it's w/ UPS [19:06] linux stuff factored into it I know that === ikkles is now known as zeropython === zeropython is now known as zer0python
