[13:10] been reading up on it earlier, does look good [13:10] Well i think i'll give it another try later. [13:10] boxee uses a built in browser with flash or something i believe. [15:12] zerty: that sounds like an issue with the user the FTP daemon is running as or the login they are using, but the support channel is probably the best place to ask. [15:13] Oh snow and I hadn't even noticed [15:16] support channel it isn't here ? dwatkins [15:17] zerty: there's another channel, #ubuntu, this is more of a social channel, although we sometimes talk techical here too. [20:11] applications > sound & video > brasero [20:12] okay dont worry i think ive got it [20:12] what stuff are trying to burn? data or video [20:12] yeah :) i was just gonna say make sure you choose the right project type [20:12] dont worry its burning :) [20:18] [Matthew Garrett] Dear internet - http://mjg59.livejournal.com/131342.html [20:31] I have returned [20:33] everyone is asleep I guess [20:33] just as I need help as well [20:34] :) [20:34] ask away dear chap! [20:35] how do I receve pms in thus clinant [20:35] * daftykins leans over and puts another coin in Phineas [20:35] Perhaps if you give it longer than 1 minute between joining the channel and assuming people are asleep might be a good idea [20:35] which client is that? [20:35] fIRC [20:36] for android [20:36] ITIL.. now i've heard of that [20:37] Phineas: Perhaps there's an Android channel, or maybe the xda forums would be able to help [20:37] I know /msg works for sending pms but how do I receve them [20:38] that is the question [20:39] I don't know of any android channels [20:40] Have you asked in #freenode, thats the network admin channel [20:40] except an android chat channel [20:40] im trying to boot my computer with a windows CD but it just keeps restarting in ubutnu rather then starting with the CD [20:40] why didn't Perry think of that [20:41] LSEactuary: Sounds like you're bios is set to boot from your first hard drive rather than cd first, you probably need to go into your bios settings at boot up & change the boot order [20:42] its a CD first. btw should that CD have an ISO file only? i think this CD has 2 folders! :( [20:42] what does url stand for? [20:43] uniform resource locator [20:44] thats something I've just lernt [20:46] im deleting stuff off my USB but there never seems to be enough space. this is stupid. how do i fix this? [20:46] its a 500MB folder but theres at least 1GB free on the USB [20:47] LSEactuary, double check that the folder is in fact 500MB. Run a filesystem check on the USB device. [20:47] how? i right clicked and press propertires - the folder is 585 MB. [20:48] I worked it out [20:48] btw to run a programme from a CD do you need to burn the ISO or is the folder with the ISO in it enough? [20:48] LSEactuary: what's the problem you're trying to solve? [20:48] LSEactuary: It depends on the isco & the instructions, if its an UBuntu CD you burn the iso which creates the filesystem [20:49] LSEactuary, Ah okay, well goto System > Administration > Disk Utility and select the USB device and partition you're interested in, then click the button about filesystem checking. [20:49] what utility [20:50] i dont get what im looking for [20:50] Phineas, K3b, brasero, cdrecord.. [20:50] and how do i burn an ISO with gnomebaker - will the computer run it once burnt [20:51] LSEactuary, are you by any chance trying to make a bootable USB by copying a folder onto it? [20:51] nope [20:51] 2 different things [20:51] i want to copy my files onto my USB but its not allowing me [20:51] and there is enough space. [20:51] Just checking. I like to concentrate on one thing at a time when I don't know what I'm doing ;) [20:51] but not accoring to ubuntu [20:52] lol [20:52] What filesystem is on the USB? [20:52] is my laptops disk drive ment to be loud [20:52] no [20:52] Is it a single FAT32 partition? Two NTFS? Three ext3? [20:52] Phineas, it definitely shouldn't be clicking, that's for sure. [20:53] its just humming loudly [20:54] when a disk is inserted, [20:54] is this normal? [20:56] i have no idea - can we do the disc burning stuff first? [20:56] or do I need to do something [20:56] i have an ISO file in a folder - if i burn the ISO and restart the computer with it in will the computer boot with the CD? [20:57] what happens if i burn the whole folder (the ISO in the folder) [20:57] You don't burn a data disk with the ISO file on it. [20:57] a DVD-R [20:57] The ISO file is expanded to BE the filesystem on the disc.. it works quite differently. [20:57] * Phineas holds the line until someone becomes avalibule [20:57] so what do i do? [20:57] how do i get it on the disc [20:58] LSEactuary, Are you using Ubuntu 10.x? [20:58] yes [20:58] gnomebaker right? [20:58] data DVD? [20:58] 'Burn Image' option in whatever you're using.. I'm on 10.10 and it comes with Brasero by default. [20:59] can i use brasero? [20:59] Yes. [20:59] i have that too - please guide me throguh... [20:59] Bottom left button 'Burn existing CD/DVD image to disk'... then go find your image. [20:59] anyone avalibule yet? [20:59] as in my ISO file? [21:00] and the computer will boot from that CD once its burnt? [21:00] LSEactuary: As I said earlier, it depends on the ISO and its creator, if its an Ubuntu iso, it will be bootable & you just brun the image to disk, if its not, you need to check with the iso's creator/website to see what they say about it [21:00] Dead simple. It should autodetect the blank disk and select an appropriate write speed. Tip for you: selecting a slower speed will give a better burn. [21:00] okay ive just put the disc in.... im waiting for something to come up [21:01] how do i know if its a ubuntu iso? [21:01] Did you open Brasero and select the Burn image... button? [21:01] would be you inserted a blank disk [21:01] What are you trying to burn anyway? [21:01] im still waiting for something to load... [21:02] a DVD programme [21:02] i started brasero but its just turning off! [21:02] So you downloaded some software via bittorrent and you want to burn it to a CD? [21:02] yep [21:02] Well of course it won't boot. [21:03] oh [21:03] i was told if i burn it via gnomebaker it will [21:03] It's software for playing DVDs or somesuch from INSIDE OF an operating system? [21:03] It would help if you could SPECIFY what the software is. [21:03] i ont get what you mean. its a DVd programme that will customise menus and burn DVDS so i can record my home movies [21:04] Right. [21:04] Software.. an application [21:04] can we have a private chat please/ [21:04] To be run inside of... whatever operating system it's compatible with (Linux, Windows, Mac OS..) [21:04] what is the name of the differed? [21:04] softwere [21:05] niall please PM me [21:05] LSEactuary, what is the name of this 'DVD programme'? [21:05] please PM me and ill tell you [21:05] thats what I said [21:05] heh, software piracy is best kept in private.. [21:05] lol [21:06] !piracy [21:06] piracy discussion and other questionably legal practices are not welcome in the Ubuntu channels. Please take this discussion elsewhere or abstain from it altogether. This includes linking to pirated software, music, and video. Also see !guidelines and !o4o [21:06] niall please pM me [21:06] MartijnVdS++ [21:06] if you decide you dont want to help then thats fine [21:07] LSEactuary: Assuming its an Ubuntu program, just install it from the software repository [21:07] just hear me out [21:07] its not a ubuntu programme - i downloaded it off bitorrent. [21:07] piracy defrently [21:07] LSEactuary: If its a windows package, ask in ##windows [21:07] ##windos [21:07] LSEactuary, You need more help than I can give. I suggest that if you want to learn about ISO images and how to burn them or indeed mount them without burning them, you use Google and Wikipedia to get a grounding in the matter. All the info you need is out there, in baby-step form. Go and make use of that. [21:08] if its a pirate copy, please don't ask in this channel [21:08] oh one sec - ive got bassero open. just tell me what option i should pick [21:08] burn image? [21:08] Troll, folks? [21:08] just help me pick an option and ill log off [21:08] yep troll [21:08] what the heck. im asking for help [21:09] LSEactuary, last time... Brasero > bottom left button, burn existing image to disk > click on the file, select burner drive and speed, burn! [21:09] get rid of the troll [21:09] okay thanks! [21:09] now go away [21:09] done [21:16] sorry - how long does the ISO take to burn? its saying 'creating image checksum' and its been there for a while [21:17] the organge bar is moving back and forth but i dont think anythings happening [21:18] LSEactuary: it can take a long time, a CD is quite big, DVD even bigger [21:19] okay roughly? [21:19] please do not ask people to engage in private messages about this [21:20] dunno how long it would take, I don't know how much data you are trying to burn [21:20] LSEactuary: We don't know what the iso is, how big it is or what the software is, so we can't answer the question [21:20] give it an hour [21:20] if you are unwilling to reveal what the content is then we are likely to suspect you are asking for help relating to piracy, which we don't give [21:21] Or ask the software producer how long it will take to burn the downloaded bit torrent iso to dvd? [21:21] its a DVD programme - sonic dvd media [21:21] I'm sure they'll be willing to help [21:21] its about 3.5 gb [21:22] okay ill give it time. [21:49] my ISO file has been burning for a while now about 1/2 hr. its still saying creating image checksum and the organge bar is moving right and left. is there a way of checking this is working an not just wasting electricity? [21:50] LSEactuary: Install and run htop and see if a suitable-looking process is using CPU time? [21:50] LSEactuary: Or just use top. I just prefer htop. [21:50] how do install that? [21:51] and how long will it take to burn a 3.5 GB ISO on a DVD R [21:53] oh ive installed it but what am i looking for? [21:53] a bunch of random numbers and works have come up [21:54] ..... [21:55] darael.... [21:55] LSEactuary: Sorry, got sidelined in #ubuntu. [21:55] no worries [21:55] so what do i look for - ive got it open [21:56] LSEactuary: You want to check the commands that are using lots of CPU time and see if any of them look appropriate - the CD burner in Ubuntu is "brasero" [21:57] /usr/bin/X ;o -nr -verbose -auth /var/run/gdm/auth-for-gdm-gaZZi is taking up 7 [21:57] xtop is taking up 3 [21:57] htop = 2 [21:57] basero - 1 [21:57] eveything else is 0.2, 0.1 or 0 [21:58] actually everything else is 0 [21:58] LSEactuary: Right. In the s column, what letter does Brasero have? [21:58] S [21:59] Right, sounds like it's not doing anything, then. [21:59] the only R is htop [21:59] okay can i fix it? [21:59] That I can't help you with, sorry. [21:59] okay do you know how i can burn an ISO onto a DVD-R then? [22:00] ? [22:01] LSEactuary: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto#Ubuntu [22:01] umm what programme do i use? [22:02] It says on the instructions linked to above ^ [22:02] okay ill try [22:03] LSEactuary: gnomebaker, nautilus-cd-burner or k3b will all do the job, as will burn. Reading the wiki page is advised, however. [22:03] ...oh. [22:04] actuary indeed [22:06] okay its creating an image checksum [22:07] starting to record ! woo hoo! [22:08] okay its burning now! thanks sooooooooo much [22:08] hey guys [22:08] hmm, internet appears to have bombed out here [22:10] err, andylockran: if that's the case, how come you're still on IRC? [22:14] danfish: just DNS [22:14] tht was my test [22:14] :P [22:15] andylockran: fairynuff :) [22:24] ive burnt the ISO but i resterted the computer and its not booting it [22:25] my boot menu is set to the CD/DVd first [22:31] is it a bootable DVD? [22:31] does a known working bootable CD work?
