firewall_03can you dual boot 2 different linux distros05:28
AbhiJitfirewall_03, yes05:28
AbhiJitmost time easily05:29
firewall_03anything to watch out for?05:29
CensoredBiscuitfirewall_03 not at the same time though05:29
AbhiJitsometimes needs a little tweak in grub/lilo05:29
CensoredBiscuityou can only have one running at a time05:29
firewall_03CensoredBiscuit, ya I realize that05:29
pleia2nothing really to watch out for05:30
firewall_03ok05:31
pleia2I guess you should probably keep an eye on which OS is writing to the MBR, in case the different linux distros have different versions of grub and they both want to rewrite it all the time05:31
firewall_03I am thinking about trying MINT05:31
pleia2but in reality I've never had a real issue with that05:32
firewall_03ok05:35
firewall_03any other distros you guys like beside ubuntu?05:36
pleia2debian, but on the desktop it kinda feels like unpolished ubuntu (I just use it on servers)05:37
firewall_03ya05:39
firewall_03I want to try something a little more difficult05:39
sebikulfirewall_03, you can check out archlinux05:40
sebikulyou will learn a lot about how linux really works using it05:40
firewall_03sebikul,  will do05:40
firewall_03I installed mandrake when I was like 12, then got tired of it being confusing and went back to windows, then switched to linux when I was overseas because the viruses were so bad with our haji satellite internet05:41
shahanUpdate Manager on Maverick Meerkat is always asking me to make a update of Google Chrome (22 MB)05:42
shahanI updated it for about05:42
pleia2fedora is also an option if you want to check out an rpm-based distro05:42
shahan3 times during this weeks05:42
firewall_03pleia2,  didn't fedora acquire Novell a couple years back?05:43
pleia2shahan: yeah, they keep updating it :(05:43
pleia2firewall_03: nope, fedora is red hat's community distro05:43
shahanpleia2, always update?05:43
shahanpleia2,  2-3 times in a week!!!05:44
pleia2shahan: google chrome is installed directly from google as an in development release, yes, sometimes they release 2-3 times a week :(05:44
pleia2they just launched their store so I this is unusual, they are probably working out a lot of bugs05:44
shahanpleia2, everytime it download 22 MB files which is not as easy for me as I have a slow internet connection05:45
pleia2shahan: you might want to check out chromium-browser05:45
pleia2it's the community version of google chrome and comes from ubuntu rather than google, it's just patched for security, not adding lots of new features all the time05:45
shahanpleia2, hmm05:46
firewall_03so I got this ISO downloaded how do I make it bootable via a thumb drive?05:47
pleia2firewall_03: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick05:47
pleia2(I haven't actually done it, but that's where I'd start)05:49
JoeMaverickSettyou could use the Startup Disk Creator from System > Administration. :D05:50
firewall_03that was easy05:51
firewall_03will there be an option to resize the partition?05:53
firewall_03well that didn't work ISO wouldn't boot06:00
sebikulshahan, you must be using the beta/development repository. the stable one gets an update once a month06:02
shahansebikul, wat!!!06:02
shahansebikul, how to solve this problem?06:02
JoeMaverickSettfirewall_03: did you use the StartUp Disk Creator or the link?06:02
firewall_03ya did that06:03
firewall_03trying unetbooin06:03
sebikulshahan, go to System -> Administration ->  Update manager. in the bottom left corner, click the configure button06:04
JoeMaverickSettfirewall_03: in the Choose your device make sure you choose your device name, in Startup Disk Creator. give unetbootin a try also. :)06:04
firewall_03JoeMaverickSett, thats what I did, will try unetbootin maybe somethin else06:04
shahansebikul, there has no configuration button. there has a settings... button06:05
JoeMaverickSettfirewall_03: what i always do is format my usb 2times before doing that. :P06:05
sebikulshahan, :P it's the same, i just have it in spanish, i dont know the exact translation06:05
firewall_03haha ok06:05
shahansebikul, ok.. then?06:06
sebikulshahan, once there go to the other software tab, look for the entry that points to the google repository06:06
sebikulshahan, select it and click the edit button, now tell me what the distribution textbox says06:07
shahanstable06:07
JoeMaverickSett:O06:08
sebikulshahan, sure?? and the url?06:08
shahansebikul, http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/deb/06:09
firewall_03JoeMaverickSett, wish me luck06:09
firewall_03:D06:09
JoeMaverickSettfirewall_03: good luck. :P06:09
sebikulshahan, the component is "main" right?06:09
shahansebikul, yes06:10
shahansebikul, take a look there http://img836.imageshack.us/img836/2784/othersoft.png06:12
sebikulshahan, you must have another repository that has published a higher version than the one i just told you to look for. let me look at the once that are listed in the screenshot so i can tell you which one is causing the updates06:13
shahansebikul, I dont understand06:14
bioterroroh snap06:14
bioterroruse the chromium06:14
bioterrorand if you want beta, use ppa beta channel06:15
JoeMaverickSettchromium daily builds FTW! :P06:15
bioterroryou can use apt-get06:15
firewall_03and no dice again06:15
JoeMaverickSettfirewall_03: :(06:15
sebikulshahan, updates are always installed using the higher version available, now, you have the stable google repository, but another one must have another build with a higher version,06:15
firewall_03gave me a weird error06:15
bioterrorand keep the chromium up to date06:15
bioterrori really suggest to use beta, it works like a charm06:16
firewall_03gonna try mint instead06:17
* JoeMaverickSett nods to bioterror 's suggestion.06:17
shahansebikul, thats the repository I am using http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/5963/repository.png06:19
shahansebikul, its an local repository of BANGLADESH06:19
sebikulshahan, i have no idea where the update is coming from :S. i am using the same google repository and i have never experienced any problem06:21
shahansebikul, hmm... tnx for help06:21
sebikulshahan, no problem06:21
firewall_03well its resizing the partitions now had to go to the basement to get my wep kep!!!!06:30
firewall_03key rather06:30
firewall_03ok lets see if I screwed this up or not, I selected / as the mount point for my mint install, but it said it wouldn't allow it since my ubuntu system has the / mount point06:37
firewall_03so I effed up my grub I think06:55
firewall_03any takers? lol06:57
JoeMaverickSettfirewall_03: does booting from live CD and doing sudo update-grub works?07:08
firewall_03haven't tried it right now I am on mint :S07:11
firewall_03http://pastebin.com/5ZJPBABT07:12
firewall_03thats what fdisk -l shows07:12
firewall_03here is my pastebin after I did sudo update-grub http://pastebin.com/8TQnmf7r07:25
bioterrorhmmmmm07:25
JoeMaverickSettREBOOT! :D07:26
Puck`so it worked?07:26
firewall_03kk rebooting07:26
firewall_03brb07:26
firewall_03and no dice fellows07:30
hobgoblinfirewall_03: I've never been one for dice07:48
firewall_03hobgoblin:  me either07:48
firewall_03http://pastebin.com/UpPi1nbh07:50
firewall_03take a look at that....07:50
hobgoblinthey are NOT dice ;) what's the issue with them?07:55
firewall_03I can't boot into ubuntu now, but at least I have mint07:56
bioterroryou cant boot to mint as you installed mint over the ubuntu ;)07:57
bioterrorat least it seems so07:57
firewall_03hobgoblin:  https://www.tannens.com/shop/secure/images/products/1787.jpg07:57
firewall_03bioterror: yep poor attempt to dual boot with ubuntu07:58
nit-witfirewall_03, did you loose anything07:59
firewall_03nit-wit: idk right now07:59
firewall_03really don't know how to access the other partition I guess I could mount it08:00
nit-witfirewall_03, did you have anything in ubuntu that you wanted saved08:00
firewall_03nit-wit: some stuff08:00
hobgoblingoodnow bioterror nit-wit08:01
nit-withobgoblin, happy holidays and to you all08:02
hobgoblinthank you - same for you :)08:02
nit-witfirewall_03, run this script and paste bin it.http://bootinfoscript.sourceforge.net/08:05
firewall_03http://pastebin.com/N9CiBvpd08:10
hobgoblinfirewall_03: that's just the script - you need to run it :)08:14
firewall_03http://pastebin.com/MiX81Fh508:15
hobgoblinthat's more like it - though as I have no idea what your issue is I shall wander off08:17
firewall_03dual booted ubuntu and mint08:18
firewall_03and now grub went bye bye08:18
hobgoblinthat's not a dual boot - you have mint on sda2 and home on sda608:26
hobgoblinsda108:26
firewall_03well I screwed it up then08:26
hobgoblinI assume that mint was the last one installed08:27
firewall_03yep08:27
nit-witI think hob s right if you had a seperate home08:28
hobgoblinthen it looks like it either used the whole disk or you overwrote the exisiting OS08:28
hobgoblinsda6 is mounted to /home08:28
firewall_03thats what I did, when I installed mint it asked for a mount point I did /home08:29
firewall_03DOHHHH!08:29
hobgoblinoh so are you saying the sda6 used to be /08:29
firewall_03no I creadted sda6 for mint08:29
hobgoblinaaah08:30
hobgoblinand sda1 was the original install with no seperate home08:30
firewall_03so did I lose all my files or?08:30
bioterroryes08:30
firewall_03sda1 was /08:30
bioterrorfirewall_03, my condolences for the files08:31
firewall_03all that adult material gone....08:31
bioterrorahhh08:31
hobgoblinI'd say it is gone - not only has it been formatted but it has also had mint installed on it - so it's possible you might be able to find some info with testdisk but I would doubt it08:31
hobgoblinbackups are failry useful, especially in hindsight08:32
firewall_03hob08:32
firewall_03I was using ubuntu one so I am pretty good just lost my movies and stuff, no biggie08:33
hobgoblinfirewall_03: if I lost all my media I would not be so laidback ;)08:34
bioterrorhobgoblin, I just deleted my 800GB image of broken drive, I couldnt mount the ecrypt home and I gave up :D08:35
hobgoblinor rather - if I lost all my media again I would not be so laidback ... I am REALLY good at telling people to backup08:35
firewall_03hobgoblin: I cried when my 200 gigs of porn crashed to the concrete08:35
bioterrorhobgoblin, but I learned from it, I've got 1TB drive for backups now08:35
bioterrorhahaha you get always new pr0n08:35
hobgoblinI am rubbish at backups08:35
hobgoblinand that's probably enough talk of porn ...08:35
bioterrorhobgoblin, I used to be too, but I almost lost all my family pictures from the past 4 years including my kids deliveries08:36
firewall_03so, hows the weather?08:36
hobgoblinbioterror: that's :(08:36
hobgoblinfirewall_03: it is warmer here - crept up to 0C now08:36
bioterror[Espoo: -8°C, Mostly Cloudy]08:37
bioterrorthat's is acceptable weather08:37
bioterrornot too cold08:37
bioterrorI dont have to use erol flynn underpants while walking to work from train station or riding bike :D08:38
bioterrors/use/wear/08:38
bioterrorI bet hobgoblin remember that erol flynn's robin hood and those tights :D08:38
hobgoblin ha ha ha ha08:38
bioterrorfirewall_03, one thing sucks on Linux Mint08:39
bioterroryou cant do do-release-upgrade :D08:40
firewall_03lol I am about ready to format reinstall08:40
firewall_03lol08:40

IAmNotThatGuyty hobgoblin [=08:43
nit-witI had to fire up my mint 10 on the SDHC class 10 card for fun08:43
hobgoblinnever tried mint, or any of the other based on buntu things08:45
nit-witthe mint consistently runs about 70MIB less ram then Maverick I plenty to spare but not a bad setup08:45
hobgoblinI used to worry about ram but eventually decided that as the only music player I really like is amarok in gnome it was pointless :)08:46
nit-withobgoblin: I just came across the mint site while trying to get natty to work at first and have it dual on a 16 bit card08:46
hobgoblinnice08:46
hobgoblinI will I think look about a bit more when unity lands - really not liking that :(08:47
firewall_031glad I bought that Ubuntu User magazine for 15 bucks last night08:47
nit-withobgoblin: couldn't get the natty grub to work but since it is a card would boot through the HD grub so I mounted and installed grub in mint to control th unruly natty08:48
nit-witNatty wil be usable for me when the panels are adjustable but  think thats not in the picture development wise.08:50
hobgoblinnit-wit: yep - I've no problem with the panel as such - just want to be able to do with it as I want08:59
firewall_03yeah I am making my boot drive now09:03
hobgoblinfirewall_03: well I guess at least this time you don't need to worry about existing data09:04
firewall_03hobgoblin: :(09:06
firewall_03oh well least I learned my lesson09:07
hobgoblinmeasure twice cut once ...09:07

But freqently i shutdown X/gdm and just run in console mode. When I do that, the console only shows up on the internal LCD display. It will not display on the external monitor. sebikulkristian-aalborg, rsync?20:00
Mjiighusker's the command you want would be something like sudo apt-get remove build-essential subversion git-core checkinstall yasm texi2html libfaac-dev libjack-jackd2-dev libmp3lame-dev libopencore-amrnb-dev libopencore-amrwb-dev libsdl1.2-dev libtheora-dev libvorbis-dev libvpx-dev libx11-dev libxfixes-dev libxvidcore-dev zlib1g-dev ffmpeg x26420:02
Mjiigbut if you had any of those libs installed already for some reason that could cause problems20:02

geirhakristian-aalborg: I use backuppc, got a headless box running it. It logs on my desktop once in a while and do an incremental or full backup. You can configure it via its web interface or by editing config files.20:16
kristian-aalborghello geirha, sebikul20:16
kristian-aalborgI'm looking for something that lets me recreate my current system w/ as little has as possible... a list of installed files and a copy of the config files would do, I suppose?20:17
geirhaaptitude --disable-columns -F %p search "~i"  # that'll give you a list of all installed packages20:22
geirhaAnd then if you tar down /etc and /home  you'll be backing up the most important stuff.20:22
firewall_03heres a ?  when I installed ubuntu this morning I did 2 partitions one / and /home was that smart or dumb?20:27
geirhaHow much space for each?20:28
geirha10-20GB for /, rest for /home  is a good setup.20:32

hobgoblinfirewall_03: df -h21:02
nit-withobgoblin, on natty the latest US server updates has it purring.21:02
hobgoblinoh cool - I have 500Mb of updates that I'm ignoring at the moment - as I'm only really looking at unity at the moment - I suspect I will wait for a2 to arrive and just get that21:03
firewall_03http://pastebin.com/gnhXiagL21:03
hobgoblinfirewall_03: I would say that you overegged the pudding for / by 20-Gb or so - but they'll not cause you any issues I think21:04
nit-withobgoblin,  never used desktop switching but it is a nice integration in the unity setup,I might actually tolerate the confines.21:04
firewall_03overregged the pudding?21:05
nit-witFF 4 is setting up correctly now so it is usable within the screen21:05
hobgoblinfirewall_03: a bit big21:05
firewall_03haha better safe than sorry?21:05
hobgoblinfirewall_03: I doubt if you'll use all that - but as I said - I doubt if that setup will cause you any problems - personally I am a smak home and data partitions type of guy21:06
hobgoblinnit-wit: the biggest issue I have with unity at the moment is if you have more than one thing in a window it can be rather frustrating trying to access the menu in the bar ...21:07
firewall_03ya I always made a bunch of partitions with windows,21:07
hobgoblinfirewall_03: my / which includes home is too big at 18Gb21:09
nit-withobgoblin, I think the update worked that out, I have control buttons in the FF , and xchat screens and in the panel. That was a problem last I had looked yesterday the overlapping screen hiding the buttons under the panel I think.21:09
hobgoblinbut as I said - you'll be fine21:09
hobgoblinnit-wit: oh well I might get the updates then and have another look21:10
nit-withobgoblin, live on the edge man. :)21:10
hobgoblinnit-wit: at the moment the install is bare - no media mounted no irc21:10
hobgoblinha ha ha21:10
nit-withobgoblin, I had to add the xswat ppa to get better graphics but  have al the usual  suspects for media ect installed, including a regular ff addon assortment21:11
hobgoblinexcellent - all mine has had done is nvidia added to see unity ...21:12
