saintlyhow do i go about finding out what friver i need, and how do i get it?00:00
charlie-tcaWhat version of Xubuntu?00:00
saintly10.1000:00
charlie-tcaApplications -> System -> Additional Drivers00:00
saintlyit said: no proprietary drivers found.00:01
charlie-tcamuch harder00:01
charlie-tcawhat video card do you have? You can use    lspci    in a terminal to find out00:01
saintlyokay, let me try that00:02
saintlyalrght gave me a whole list, what do i need to look at?00:03
charlie-tcafind video in it00:03
charlie-tcaor graphics00:03
saintly00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device (rev 01)00:03
saintlywill this work for me? http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=529470600:05
charlie-tcaIsn't that to set up a second instance of compiz. You can't get the first instance to start00:07
saintlyi have Compiz up entirely, what it would seem is that "vesa" is the fallback driver for intel, and i need the right driver, but i dont know how to do that00:08
charlie-tcaLooks to me like I should say to try in #ubuntu-x , since I don't know why the hardware driver is not working for you00:08
saintlyuntil i have the right driver, only basic rendering is possible, which means no pretty compiz00:09
charlie-tcaYour hardware driver is built in to the kernel00:09
saintlyhmm00:10
charlie-tca!855gm00:10
charlie-tca!intel00:10
ubottuUbuntu 9.04 has a known regression for some Intel graphics support. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/IntelPerformance and http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1130582 for more information.00:10
charlie-tcabut it doesn't tell us about 10.1000:11
gr8m8a read of the X log should give a clue especially whether dri is enabled00:11
charlie-tcaYou have to tell saintly how to do that, gr8m800:12
gr8m8ok00:13
saintlylol noobish :P00:13
gr8m8saintly: in a terminal run this command   grep -i dri /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep -iv driver00:13
saintlyand you wnat the outcome?00:14
charlie-tcaif it is more than a line or two use pastebin00:14
gr8m8it should tell if dri is enabled on a line that starts with AIGLX00:14
charlie-tca!paste00:14
ubottuFor posting multi-line texts into the channel, please use http://paste.ubuntu.com | To post !screenshots use http://tinyurl.com/imagebin | !pastebinit to paste directly from command line | Make sure you give us the URL for your paste - see also the channel topic.00:14
saintlyalright says: AIGLX: Screen 0 is not DRI2 capable... and also: AIGLX: Screen 0 is not DRI capable00:16
gr8m8that means you can't do compositing then afaik00:16
saintlywhich means im just not able to do compiz?00:16
gr8m8yep00:17
gr8m8I'll have a quick google about your card00:17
saintlywhat ifi find a driver for my graphics card, will that fix anything?00:17
MorphixNWI have the same graphics chip, but I dont have drivers installed for it00:18
MorphixNWdefault works for me, but it broke after the latest kernel update00:18
gr8m8I think the only one available is the driver in the kernel for intel cards00:18
saintlyand thats the vesa one yeah?00:19
MorphixNWyeah00:19
saintlyhmm well im gonna look around online, i already found one for the 82852 family00:20
gr8m8saintly: have you run the terminal app   Compiz-check   ?00:21
charlie-tcasaintly: it has to be for the 855gm though. The family has many cards included00:21
saintlyyes i have, gr8m8, thats what told me vesa driver wouldnt support compiz00:21
saintlyhmm00:21
gr8m8saintly: using the vesa driver will never get you compositing - can you paste your X log?00:22
saintlyhold on found a soved fix i beleive...00:23
saintlyhttp://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=146423900:23
saintlywill that work?00:24
charlie-tcamight be. Read all of that information. Sometimes, it makes things worse, but if you are willing to take a chance than it is worth tryign00:25
charlie-tcaYou might have to reinstall xubuntu when it breaks, though00:25
saintlylol i have 2 usbs and a cd of xubunt now :D00:26
* charlie-tca shrugs... he is always willing to do another installation if needed00:29
gr8m8that forum post is about a different issue with an earlier kernel00:29
saintlyalright well i found a set of instructions, but i cant wrpp my mind around it00:29
gr8m8I'd check the X log for why it uses the vesa driver first myself00:30
gr8m8!ppa00:30
ubottuA Personal Package Archive (PPA) can provide alternate software not normally available in the offical Ubuntu repositories - Looking for a PPA? See https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+ppas - WARNING: PPAs are unsupported third-party packages, and should be used at your own risk.00:30
gr8m8should tell how to set up a ppa00:31
saintlywhat about this set of instructions? its the first answer there, i cant understand about hlaf of it00:32
saintlyhttp://superuser.com/questions/192121/how-to-install-intel-82852-855gm-driver-on-ubuntu-10-10-maverick-meerkat00:32
gr8m8the comment marked 1 seems to be the easiest - but it depends on what the X log says about why it is using the vesa driver00:35
gr8m8there has to be a reason for that00:36
saintlylol i have no idea00:36
saintlyis there any way to find out?00:36
gr8m8I asked earlier if you could paste your X log00:36
saintlywhere do i get that from? the system check for compiz?00:37
gr8m8the X log is the file   /var/log/Xorg.0.log00:37
saintlyhow do i pull that out and get it here? lol00:38
gr8m8open it and copy it to pastebin00:39
gr8m8!paste00:39
ubottuFor posting multi-line texts into the channel, please use http://paste.ubuntu.com | To post !screenshots use http://tinyurl.com/imagebin | !pastebinit to paste directly from command line | Make sure you give us the URL for your paste - see also the channel topic.00:39
gr8m8in mousepads menu is an option for selecting all text in an open file - then right click the selected text and select copy00:40
saintlylol im still trying to find the file00:40
gr8m8 /var is a toplevel directory like /boot and /media00:42
charlie-tcaOpen places; click system00:43
charlie-tcafind var00:43
saintlyi have xorg log and xorg log old00:44
saintlyi have xorg log and xorg log old00:44

gueroHello?00:47
charlie-tca!hi | guero00:47
ubottuguero: Hi!, Welcome to #xubuntu! Feel free to ask questions and help people out. The channel guidelines are at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IRC/Guidelines. Enjoy your stay!00:47
gueroHey! :)00:48
gueroI'm trying to set up Xubuntu on my laptop.00:48
gueroI just updated all of the drivers and installed all of the necessary updates.00:48
gueroApparently, Xubuntu says that "wireless is disabled."00:48
gueroI'm using a cable to connect to the Internet.00:48
gueroAny ideas...?00:49
saintlydang00:49
gueroThat doesn't sound too good! lol!00:49
gueroAm I out of luck on this one?00:50
MorphixNWcould try installing Windows Drivers, not exactly sure how, but I managed to make a Netgear USB WiFi work on my 10.04 system that way :)00:50
LKhiya eberybody!00:51
charlie-tcasee if the driver is waiting to be installed in additional drivers00:51
MorphixNWhi lk00:52
guero@MorphixNW  Where could I find the Windows drivers?  Would I have to try Wine and see what happens?00:52
LKhow's it going?00:52
charlie-tca!wireless00:52
ubottuWireless documentation, including how-to guides and troubleshooting information, can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs00:52
MorphixNWguero: try Applications > Additional Drivers first :)00:52
MorphixNWLK: not so bad :)00:52
LKI'm thinking of finally Taking The Plunge00:52
MorphixNWgo for it00:53
LKwell, my big issue is, i don't want to get rid of all of my settings00:53
MorphixNWremove the hard drive and install a different one :)00:53
LKI'd have to buy a new hard drive :p00:54
MorphixNWVM it for a while and the switch fully00:54
LKthat's what I've been doing, actually00:55
MorphixNWgo for it, format and install Xubuntu :)00:55
LKwhich brings me back to losing my settings :p00:56
MorphixNWwhat is it that is important about the settings?00:56
MorphixNWor do you mean files?00:56
LKlogs, histories, favorites, that sort of stuff00:56
LKwhich I suppose are, technically, files00:56
MorphixNWUSB stick?00:56
gueroMorphixNW: I looked up the additional drivers, and it said "no propriety drivers are in use on this system."00:56
LKhm00:57
gueroMorphixNW: It also said that I had the Broadcom B43 wireless driver installed and activated.00:57
LKthat might work00:57
MorphixNWhmmmm00:57
MorphixNWtry installing wicd then :)00:57
gueroI've tried rebooting the machine, but it doesn't seem to help.00:57
MorphixNWguero "sudo apt-get install wicd"00:57
MorphixNWguero: "sudo apt-get install wicd"00:57
MorphixNWits a different network manager00:58
gueroMorphixNW: Okay, I just ran the sudo you just gave me.01:00
MorphixNW!cluster01:00
gueroMorphixNW: And it said, * Starting Network connection manager wicd   [fail]01:00
MorphixNWtry to start it from Applications > Network01:01
gueroMorphixNW: Okay, I got it to start from Applications > Network01:01
gueroIt says that I'm currently connected via wired-default01:02
MorphixNWany wireless options?01:02
gueroNo wireless networks found01:02
gueroDo I need to unplug the internet cable from the laptop and try the router?01:02
gueroTrying to connect to the Internet wirelessly, I mean01:03
MorphixNWshould be able to see it even with wired plugged in01:03
gueroThe box is checked that says, "Use as default profile (overwrites any previous default.)"01:04
gueroDo I just need to try to add my network manually?01:04
MorphixNWgive it a shot :)01:04
gueroI mean, I don't know my IP Address/Netmask01:05
gueroCan't you tell I'm a Linux newbie?01:05
gueroHaha!01:05
gueroMorphixNW: Or am I just out of luck on this one?01:07
MorphixNWassign that to DCHP or automatic01:08
MorphixNWbut wifi isnt always easy on linux :(01:08
gueroDCHP is already set to "automatic"01:09
gueroYeah, WiFi on Linux is becoming pretty painful! lol!01:10
MorphixNWso you should just need to setup the SSID01:10
MorphixNWnetwork name (wireless)01:10
LKis Xcfe based on Qt?01:10
gr8m8nope gtk01:11
LKok01:11
saintlyalright, im back and ready to try this one more time...01:11
gr8m8did you find the log?01:12
saintlyIm using http://www.downloadatoz.com/driver/articles/guide-install-intel-855gm-driver-to-ubuntu-10-10.html to try and install a 855gm, but its asking for /etc/x11/xorg.conf which i do not have.01:12
gueroMorphixNW: Umm...how to I setup the SSID?01:12
gueroXD01:12
saintlyand yes i fould the file, but it wouldnt let me past somethingthat bifg gr8m801:13
MorphixNWthe SSID is the name of your wireless network, setup on the router01:13
MorphixNWyou shoudl just be able to enter the details in the correct boxes, but I dont have wicd installed so hard to say precisely01:13
saintlyi dont know why i dont have a xorg.conf file but i should.01:13
gr8m8saintly: you cam make a xorg.conf with the command   Xorg -configure   or easier find one on the net for your card01:14
gr8m8saintly: not for a while has xorg.conf been used - the dir xorg.conf.d is used now01:14
saintlygr8m8: find one what? LOL and yes i just ran the config file in term01:14
gr8m8but a xorg.conf will still work01:15
MorphixNWI am sleepy now, tomorrow I will hopefully have my cluster-farm setup :)01:15
gueroMorphixNW: I'm sorry, but I'm still really lost on this one!01:15
saintlygr8m8: where can i find the new config file, is it still under X11?01:15
gr8m8saintly: it will be in your home dir01:15
saintlygr8m8: just home? wow thats nuch easier :D01:16
gr8m8saintly: it won't work from there you need to copy it to /etc/X1101:16
gr8m8edit it first01:16
saintlyso create a xorg.conf.d, and copy it to X11?01:16
gr8m8saintly: you will already have that dir in /etc/X1101:17
saintlyhmm01:17
gr8m8saintly: if you are going to use a xorg.conf file it goes in /etc/X1101:17
saintlygr8m8 i have nothing that even says xorg on it under X1101:18
gr8m8saintly: I dunno what has happened to your system then01:19
gr8m8it is always there01:19
saintlyyeah, i have a genetic mutation..01:19
saintly:D01:19
saintlythis sux01:19
saintlymaybew thats why im using vesa drivers then, because the file that would specify otherwise simply does not exist.01:20
gr8m8saintly: what does   cat /etc/issue   return?01:20
saintlygr8m8: in term?01:21
gr8m8yep01:21
saintlyUbuntu 10.10 \n \l01:21
gr8m8k01:22
saintlywhat does that tell you? lol01:22
gr8m8saintly: do your editing to the xorg.conf file you made and copy it to /etc/X11 then01:22
gr8m8just what os you run01:23
saintlyalright01:23
saintlynow what shold i be putting IN the file lol01:23
saintlyand is it just a wordpad?01:23
gr8m8it is called mousepad in xubuntu01:24
saintlylol oopsy01:24
saintlywhat goes inside there?01:24
gr8m8you said you were following a website what does that ask you to do?01:26
saintlyto edit my file, but the file its asking me to edit, doesnt exist.01:26
saintly:D01:26
gr8m8you just made it you said and it was in your home dir...01:27
saintlyi said where do i put it once i make it01:27
gr8m8saintly: do your editing to the xorg.conf file you made and copy it to /etc/X11 then01:28
gr8m8like I said earlier01:28
gr8m8ffs01:28
LKback XD01:28
LKI had a thought01:29
saintlyor not, cuz i found Xorg conf.d under usr/share/X11 YESSSSSS01:29
saintlywooooo01:29
saintlythey appriently moved it from etc01:30
saintlyis that where yours is?01:30
LKif I were to delete as much as I could from Windows, I could use the spare space for a new partition, right?01:30
saintlyi dont see why not, as long as you have the space for files in your linux01:31
LKcan Xubuntu read/write/execute from Windows?01:31
saintlylike, while running windows?01:32
LKno, while running Xubuntu01:32
LKexecute I'm not so worried about, really01:32
LKthough, if I installed WINE...01:32
saintlywine or virtualbox, both are killer programs for that kind of thing.01:33
LKvirtualbox can read/execute from other partitions?01:33
saintlyi beleive so.01:35
LKweird01:35
saintlygr8m8: where under xorg.conf.d do i edit for my driver intel01:35
LKI'd think a guest machine wouldn't even see any extra partitions from the host machine...01:36
saintlyits only doing configs for my mouse and track pad so it would seem.01:36
saintlyi might not have a clue what im talkin about LK lol.01:37
LKlol01:37
saintlyive used VB though, and have run several distros from windows in linux, and linux in windows.01:37
saintlyi perfer VB to WINE01:38
LKwhat I'm thinking is, if my program settings are saved in various files, then I can install Xubuntu in a new partition, then copy all the settings files from Windows to Xubuntu01:38
LKadjusting the partition sizes as Windows slowly gets assimilated01:39
LKwould that work?01:40
saintlyi dont know about that, theres always that barrier between linux and windows, i dont know if theyll convert without a program specifically for finding and converting them.01:41
charlie-tcasaintly: if xorg.conf is not under /etc/X11/xorg.conf, create it there. Otherewise it won't actually work01:41
LKdoes any *buntu have such a program?01:41
LKfor that matter, does any distro?01:42
saintlyso i dont need it under xorg.conf.d?01:42
charlie-tcasaintly: xorg.conf.d is wrong01:42
saintlyaha okay, so all i have to do now is write my own Xorg.conf file :D yay fun...01:43
saintlyill do that tomorrow.01:43
saintlyim out for now guys, see you later01:43
charlie-tcayes.01:43
charlie-tcaIf it exists it will be used,01:43
charlie-tcaIt just is not created by default anymore01:43
saintlyother wise, they revert to vesa default which are lacking in reall graphics power.01:44
saintlyunderstood. :D01:44
saintlywell im outta here01:44
gueroHey, I've got another question for you all.01:49
gueroI'm trying to find the drivers for a particular router.01:49
gueroAnd I'm not having a whole lot of luck.01:49
gueroDo you all know where I could find the drivers for a Linksys E2000 Wireless-N router?01:51
LKyou sure you don't need the drivers for the wireless card?01:52
LKI don't know if routers need drivers...01:53
charlie-tca!linksys01:55
gueroYeah, I need the drivers for the wireless card01:57
gueroMy bad!01:57
gueroXD01:57
LKwhat card do you have?01:57
gueroHold on, I'm trying to find the right code to enter into terminal to find out01:58
guero I have a Broadcom Corporation BCM4318 802.11g Wireless Lan card02:00
gueroI've already installed the Broadcom Drivers Xubuntu recommended for me.02:00
gueroAnd I've already activated them02:00
gueroI've also tried ndiswrapper02:01
gueroAnd just sticking the CD that came with my router into the drive02:01
gueroNothing seems to work02:01
guero:(02:01
charlie-tcadid you restart after activating them?02:01
gueroYes, I restarted my computer02:03
gueroThe only way I can stay online is through my ethernet cable02:03
gueroDo you guys have any ideas???02:07
LKdefinitely an issue with the wireless card02:11
gueroYeah, that's what I'm thinking.02:11
gueroI installed Xubuntu 10.04 on a Dell Latitude D610 laptop02:12
gueroIt's really old...XD02:12
gueroOkay, I've got another question for you guys...02:12
* LK put FreeDOS on his oldest laptop02:13
gueroThe last time I used Ubuntu, I was dual-booting with Windows via WUBI02:13
gueroUbuntu never had any problems connecting to Wi-Fi via Wubi02:13
gueroIf I were to use Ubuntu instead of Xubuntu, would I still have problems with my wireless card?02:13
LKtry it02:14
gueroOr is this a Xubuntu-only issue?02:14
LKI'd try that02:14
gueroDoes the fact that I used Wubi have anything to do with Ubuntu and my Wi-Fi signal?02:14
gueroI mean, I just need a machine that can quickly access the Internet02:15
gueroI'm not tied down to one particular distro.02:15
LKI'd test it out live before the install, but what do you have to lose by trying?02:16
gueroHmm...very true LK02:19
gueroI'll have to look into it.02:19
gueroI made a bootable Xubuntu USB...I can always reformat it with Ubuntu02:19
gueroI'm going to try it out...02:20
gueroThanks for the tips you guys! :)02:20
_Techie_is it at all feasable to run xubuntu in text mode inside a headless VM, and use cygwin to have an X server on widows with xfce4-panel running via ssh with X forwarding?02:46
LKwait, what?02:46
_Techie_okay02:47
_Techie_ill reword it in sections02:47
_Techie_have xubuntu or any other ubuntu derivative running in a headless VM02:47
_Techie_using the text parameter on boot to make sure no GUI loads02:47
_Techie_...02:47
_Techie_and use a X server with cygwin to ssh into that headless VM and start xfce4-panel ?02:48
LKI don't see why it wouldn't be, but I don't know how you'd do it02:48
_Techie_i know how to do it, i was wondering whether it sounded like a feasible idea, or if i was going guano crazy02:50
LKnot mutually exclusive, mind you02:51
davis_hello.  I've installed the latest stable build of Xubunut on my desktop.  I have an MAudio 2496 PCI audio card installed.  Xubuntu can see the card -- it lists it as a device in the mixer panel -- but I am not able to get any sound out of it.  I've searched for some how to's on trouble shooting this, but don't see anything that seems to relate.  Can someone suggest a trouble shooting method, or point me to some doc'04:01
davis_s that might help?  Thanks04:01

ubottuIf you're having problems with sound, click the Volume applet, then Sound Preferences, and check your Volume, Hardware, Input, and Output settings.  If that fails, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Sound - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting - http://alsa.opensrc.org/DmixPlugin - For playing audio files,  see !players and !mp3.04:03

Sysiyou propably end up throving them away11:26
MorphixNWnever! lol11:26
MorphixNWthey been in my storage (Attic) workshop for years already11:26
MorphixNWthese relics are awesome if only for show11:26
MorphixNWclustering them seems like the best use, but also could be the hardest11:27
MorphixNWsurely I cant be the only one who doesnt throw away anything that is working :)11:28
MorphixNWbut uses seem to be harder to find11:28
MorphixNWbandwidth monitoring?11:34
well_laid_lawnfile server/media server/torrenting/pvr etc11:35
well_laid_lawnlots of little things you can do with an old comp11:35
MorphixNWI would like a machine to monitor network traffic, bandwidths, etc, could be text based terminal :)11:36
MorphixNWI have a media-centre and download mule :)11:36
MorphixNWI am defo going to dedicate one of these machine to distribution work11:41
MorphixNWlet them use it for better use11:41
MorphixNWI would just like to use these machines, I have lots and spare monitors, and I have bucket loads of time :)11:44

MorphixNWcan I still get hold of eeeXubuntu?11:53
Sysiif you have real low-end, debian with openbox or no graphics at all11:55
MorphixNW!openbox11:56
ubottuopenbox is a lightweight window manager. For instructions and more information see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Openbox11:56
MorphixNWI have a machine with an AMD K6 500 chip, maybe could give it 256mb or maybe even 512mb at most11:57
well_laid_lawnI ran ubuntu dapper server with fluxbox on one of those11:59
MorphixNWhow was it?12:01
well_laid_lawnslow but worked ok enough12:01
well_laid_lawndapper was a much lighter os then the newer ones are tho12:02
MorphixNWhmm12:02
MorphixNWseems that programmers no longer work hard with the resources they have, older stuff was designed to make far better use of what was available..... this is because we didnt have buckets of resources like we have today12:12
well_laid_lawnyep if they have more resources it seems they want to use 'em all12:18
dvanstonejust installed xubuntu in 2 old gx110's12:54
dvanstoneall I can say is "now they work" but what a pain (if you aren't used to the wait)13:01

MorphixNWI am not so good with gnome, as I only recently fully converted so I am used to usng fce413:11
MorphixNWwhich I find very good and easy to use/customise13:11
ShootEmUpWell I have Older and newer computers, and if you can run GNOME comfortably, than use GNOME. If not use XFCE13:12
Sysii've always liked xfce more in about everything13:13
Sysisome "gnome-apps" maybe nice bust still13:13
Sysi3.2GHz*2 + 4GB, not about specs really13:14

charlie-tcaWhen the software is free, you get choices14:32

charlie-tcaGnome and xfce are both desktop interfaces14:32

charlie-tcaIt is a choice for any hardware14:35
ShootEmUpokay, but I still recommend GNOME14:35
charlie-tcawhy?14:35
charlie-tcabecause the hardware is newer?14:36
charlie-tcawrong reasons14:36
charlie-tcaUbuntu is excellent for any new user. It gets them started outside of windows easier than anything else.14:36
charlie-tcafrom the xfce website: "Xfce is a lightweight desktop environment for various *NIX systems. Designed for productivity, it loads and executes applications fast, while conserving system resources." - Olivier Fourdan, creator of Xfce14:36
xTitananyways, as i'm intending to purchase a netbook for a linux OS, should i download a Ubuntu NETBOOK EDITION, or a DESKTOP Edition?  I'm buying Samsung N210.. Specs on the link below..14:36

MorphixNWxfce4 on 10.10 works great, previously I had tried to install 10.04 on the same hardware, but it would fail to get most lots of stuff like network etc, but on 10.10 they just work :)14:37
ShootEmUpNetbook14:37
charlie-tca10.10 does know of more hardware, due to changes in the kernel14:37
theotherstoneeasier than ms really?14:37
xTitani will be upgrading my netbook to 2GB RAM though14:37
ShootEmUpyou could do desktop if you want, but I think netbook14:37
xTitanare there any compromise in functionality?14:38
LKKDE-- at least, KDE 3-- does have one huge advantage for the recent Windows convert14:38
xTitanor is it just kinda like looks? anyone who tried both? =\14:38
ShootEmUpback14:38
charlie-tcaxTitan: netbook edition is made for the screens on them, which are not standard screen sizes14:38
ShootEmUpon Xchat now14:38
theotherstonexTitan advantage on what?14:38
theotherstonewelcome back14:39
MorphixNW10.10 was a walk in the park compared to anything Bindows based, all my hardware was installed out of the box :)14:39
xTitan><?¿?>< i don't get ur advantage thing14:39
ShootEmUpIts better for smaller screens14:39
charlie-tcaxTitan: if your netbook has the wide but short screen, desktop edition means you have to move things around more to see the screen14:39
ShootEmUpexactly14:39
LKthe majority of Windows users are not used to changing their DE settings, and they aren't used to the "start" menu being anywhere but the bottom left corner14:40
charlie-tcaNetbook edition is customized to fit the short screen14:40
theotherstonethe newer linux kernels are geared to smaller devices i.e. netbooks14:40
LKKDE gives a more familiar environment out-of-box14:40
ShootEmUpnever tried Kubuntu14:40
LKI'm referring specifically to KDE 3, though I suppose KDE 4 is trying to be more like Vista/714:41
theotherstoneLK so true most users cant get that apps are atart I normally have to rewrite it to start14:41
theotherstoneLK I use 4.6 and and seems fine to me14:42
ShootEmUpI'll have to try KDE14:42
LKit still has the menu in the bottom left, I believe14:42
LKjust handled differently14:43
theotherstonereboot required14:43
charlie-tcaLK: we don't actually discuss kde here14:43
MorphixNWwell i agree with the start menu comment14:43
MorphixNWbut thats easy to giggle around and place at the bottom14:43
MorphixNWI switched panel 1 and 214:44
charlie-tcaYou would have to ask in #kubuntu what kde is doing :-)14:44
MorphixNWmaking 2 autohide :)14:44
dvanstoneo my that system is slow14:44
LKI was only bringing it up for comparison :)14:44
ShootEmUpthats fine to me14:45
ShootEmUpmight not be to the mods14:45
dvanstonewith xchat a terminal and one browser window it was crawling14:46
ShootEmUpgotta go now, ttyl everyone!14:46
LKmy point was, yeah, it's pretty easy to put the Xcfe start menu down in bottom left, but the average Windows convert doesn't mess around with DE settings14:46
dvanstonettfn14:46
LKsee ya Shoot14:46
dvanstoneLK maybe you should suggest or make a tute - but personally I find whichever desktop fairly easy14:48
dvanstoneit is getting them to terminal that scares most14:49
charlie-tcaIt is intentional to not have Xubuntu a windows look-a-like. We do not want the user thinking nothing changed14:49
LKwhy not? I mean, ok, "windoze suxxorz", but it's what the average PC user knows how to use14:50
dvanstoneI think the fact that people may need to read more about the comp instead of just use it14:51
LKmaybe, but they don't14:52
dvanstonethe trick is to get the familiar with it when they are young14:52
LKwhich is Windows' main advantage, I think14:52
charlie-tcaThe "why not" is because as a distribution, a decision was made to not look like windows14:52
LKthat's... circular logic14:53
charlie-tcaThat's straight decision making. We do NOT want to be a look-a-like. Nothing is circular there14:53
LKlike saying "that's not a cow, because a decision was made that that's not a cow"14:54
charlie-tcaand how is Xubuntu like windows?14:54
dvanstonewhy make it look like something else they are all diff PC OS's14:54
charlie-tcaWhy make it look the same as something it is not?14:54
dvanstonegot to chase the cat brb14:55
LKsame reason all American steering wheels are on the left side, and why cars don't have 5 foot pedals14:55
well_laid_lawnif there was no choice in linux os's I wouldn't use them14:56
well_laid_lawnI use them because there is choice14:57
well_laid_lawnand steering wheels are on the right here14:57
LKwell, yes, but they're consistantly on the right, regardless of make or model, aren't they?14:58
MorphixNWsociaty no longer encourages people to think for themselves14:58
MorphixNWwe teach people the answers from a text book and thats the answer14:59
MorphixNWwe dont encourage young people to come up with their own answer14:59
MorphixNWwe teach them the answer that we believe is true14:59
MorphixNWpeople was once executed for believing that the world is not flat14:59
MorphixNWor that they could fly :)14:59

* xTitan is ><AwaY>< ><Reason: >< SincE 11:00:02 pm>< AwayPager is on >< AwayLog is on >15:00
LKI'm just saying, familiarity is an important design element15:00
MorphixNWyes but if people are persecuted for thinking outside of the box, people will refrain from doing so15:00
charlie-tcaYou are welcome to customize any installation15:00
charlie-tcaThat's the great thing about it! You do not have to keep the defaults15:01
MorphixNWvery much so :)15:01
MorphixNWeach installation could be in itself different the dude's next door15:01
LKI, personally, don't keep the defaults15:01
MorphixNWnor me :)15:02
LKI like to tweak15:02
MorphixNWnever did with Bindows either15:02
MorphixNWI was one for modifying the reg to tweak thinks :)15:02
LKdoes your family still use Windows? your friends?15:02
MorphixNWubuntu makes it easy, like shrinking the taskbar items, easy on ubuntu, not so easy on Bindows15:02
MorphixNWmy folks do15:03
LKdo they tweak, or leave the defaults?15:03
MorphixNWcause they like games15:03
MorphixNWdefault15:03
LKlike most Windows users, in my experience15:03
MorphixNWmy mother likes her "BigFish" games and Father loves EA Command and Conquer15:04
MorphixNWnot likely to convince them to switch15:04
MorphixNWi have managed to run "Call of Duty" on SuSe previously, using cedega, but it wasnt quite the same15:05
MorphixNWit needs to be said,  that until developers start making mainstream stuff for Linux I doubt it will ever prevail15:05
well_laid_lawn!games15:06
ubottuInformation about games on Ubuntu can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Games and http://www.icculus.org/lgfaq/gamelist.php and http://www.penguspy.com/15:06
well_laid_lawnplenty of big name titles in the list15:07
LKLinux, though a technically superior system, does have a lot of flaws15:07
MorphixNWnot as many as Bindows15:07
well_laid_lawnit doesn't have to run virus scanners all the time15:07
LKI'm not talking about technical problems15:08
MorphixNWcost is silly15:08
MorphixNWOS, plus office, plus dreamweaver, that is more then the machine itself15:09
LKI'm talking about all the things that stop more users from giving up virus scanners and defraggers15:09
MorphixNWholes15:09
MorphixNWMicrosuck seem to like to release it and let the end user find the holes/bugs15:09
well_laid_lawnwe aren't into bashing microsoft in here15:10
charlie-tcaYou are right. this should probably go offtopic15:10
LKI don't think the fact that Windows Sells is all that inexplicable, personally15:12
MorphixNWagreed15:13
MorphixNWxubuntu media-centre? anyone got one or rate or recommend?15:14
charlie-tcaMicrosoft has a terrific Marketing Department. That doesn't make it good software, necessarily15:15
LKit's not just marketing15:16
MorphixNWmonopoly15:16
LKever consider why Microsoft refuses to work with OEMs that give OS-less machines?15:17
LKas one example15:17
MorphixNWthink this convo need to go #xubuntu-offtopic where it can go all night :)15:18
charlie-tcathank you, MorphixNW15:18
MorphixNWcharlie-tca: no probs, could just see it taking over lol15:21
* dvanstone wonders how much ram that board will support15:49
charlie-tcaOlder motherboards stopped at 384MB for the consumer, but some of the business machines would handle 512MB15:53
dvanstonecharlie-tca I will try 512 then15:56
MorphixNWdvanstone: what board?15:56
dvanstonelet me look it is in the dell gx11015:57
charlie-tcaAt the worst, it will only count the first 384MB, if it refuses to use more than that15:59
MorphixNWagreed15:59
MorphixNWit should just ignore anymore then the max16:00
charlie-tcaAll the systems designed for win98 stop at 384MB, as far as I know16:00
* charlie-tca knows that was the limit that 98 could use16:01
MorphixNWwow thats deep knowledge ;)16:01
dvanstonethis was 2000pro16:02
charlie-tcaThat should be capable of up to 2GB, but it depends on the hardware16:02
MorphixNWhmmmm 2GB on an optiplex gx110?16:02
MorphixNWnah16:02
MorphixNWmore like 1gb16:02
MorphixNWI would think16:02
dvanstoneIll try a gig 2x512 and see what it gets16:03

LKchecking out the Wikipedia page for X... DEs like Xcfe are X clients?16:04
MorphixNWDE = Desktop Enviroment doesnt it?16:04
LKyeah16:04
charlie-tcathey all use the Xserver to display the GUI16:04
MorphixNWi can make my machine boot something strange if I drop to terminal and "startx"16:05
charlie-tcagnome/kde/lxde/xfce/etc are all X clients16:05
MorphixNWlooks all wierd lol16:05
LKso then it's possible to run X without a DE, I'd imagine16:05
charlie-tcaMorphixNW: it boots an xfce session, bypassing all the xubuntu addins16:05
MorphixNWit is i believe16:05
MorphixNWcharlie-tca: thanks wondered what it was doing :)16:05
LKis it possible to get any GUI functions without a client?16:06
MorphixNWyou can run X without XFCE4 or gnome I believe16:06
charlie-tcaI don't think it is possible with out the X server16:06
MorphixNWcan also make an app boot instead of a true DE16:06
LKI mean if all you have is the X server, and no GNOME/KDE/Xcfe/etc16:07
charlie-tcayes, apps can run with out the DE, just kill xfwm4 and xfdesktop4 to see it in a tty16:07
charlie-tcaBut, remember, only gtk apps will run then; vim, nano, nothing that uses a gui16:08
charlie-tcaYou could boot to recovery mode, and try it too16:08
charlie-tcaTake a look at wayland, it is an Xserver replacement16:10
charlie-tcait is not ready for use yet, but is coming along quickly and will probably see use in 11.10 or later16:10
MorphixNWhope the next version better supports touchscreens16:13
MorphixNWand maybe someone will make skype-mate work too, as it worked in earlier version16:16
LKI wonder, how hard would it be to install MicroXwin on Xubuntu?16:30

Sysii'm kinda disappointed now19:55
knome;)19:55
ShootEmUpI'm not19:56
knomeanyway, #xubuntu-offtopic ...19:56
jewardI think they're trying to supplant flash with it maybe.19:56
jewardTrue. :)19:56
ShootEmUpflash is here for a little wile longer, but I don't see silverlight taking over19:57
ShootEmUphopefully something open source19:57
jewardJust did the first three of these: http://tombuntu.com/index.php/2008/09/04/four-tweaks-for-using-linux-with-solid-state-drives/19:59
jewardThe last one seems a bit involved. :)19:59
jewardIt seems ubunutu automagically does some if not all of the 4th tweak when installed on SSD.20:00
ShootEmUpI don't have to worry about any of these20:05
ShootEmUpno ones talking20:11
Sysino problems20:11
ShootEmUpyou saying there are absolutely no more problems to solve?20:12
Sysino questions20:12
ShootEmUpIf there are no more problems, then why is Microsoft still living?20:13
charlie-tcaWe don't fix microsoft issues20:13
ShootEmUpI know, but if there are no more problems with Ubuntu, then microsoft should be dead20:14
dvanstonei have a question(s)20:14
ShootEmUpyes?20:14
charlie-tcaWhy? Ubuntu doesn't have any plan for world domination over microsoft. They are welcome to have users too20:14
knomecharlie-tca, #xubuntu-offtopic ;]20:15
dvanstonehow do I place the systray or kill20:15
ShootEmUpgood question, cause ubuntu is about peace and harmony20:15
charlie-tcasorry, knome20:15
knomeno problem :)20:15
knomejust probably something for ot, the windows/microsoft discussion20:16
charlie-tcaI can see that.20:16
charlie-tcathanks for keeping me straight20:16
Sysii wish my steam-problems were about wine20:16
Sysibut they are because of ms, hotmail20:17
knomedvanstone, what do you mean by "place systray" ?20:17
dvanstoneknome I do not see the systray but I can not put it on the panel because it is running20:18
charlie-tcaThe authentication issues are not just xubuntu; they are Ubuntu wide20:19
dvanstoneI would like to see the items normally in the area20:19
knomecharlie-tca, what's the systray command/process name?20:19
dvanstonewhat auth issues?20:19
dvanstonenotification-area20:19
knomedvanstone, auth issues were probablt re: ms/hotmail for Sysi20:19
charlie-tcaI still don't know. It is the notification area , officially, though20:20
knomei don't have that running20:20
charlie-tcaIn Natty, I just right-click the area and click remove. Poof, it's gone20:20
dvanstoneofficially that is what it is called20:20
knomebut if it's not showing up, but running?20:20
knome!Panel20:20
ubottuDid you panels disappear? Press alt+f2 and run: xfce4-panel | See also: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/XubuntuPanels | Want to theme your panels? See http://xubuntu.wordpress.com/2007/10/12/howto-set-a-background-image-for-your-panel/20:20
Sysilog out and back in20:21
charlie-tcakill things having to do with notification-   I would guess20:21
Sysior start app that uses it20:21
knomehttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/XubuntuPanels#Quick%20Fix probably would help at least20:21
dvanstoneso just killall xfce-panel20:21
knomedvanstone, that could pretty well work :)20:22
dvanstoneon gnome-panels when notif area has issue that is the solution20:22
ShootEmUpwell not my area of expertise, so I guess I'll go now. Play some assault cube20:32
ShootEmUpttyl20:32
dvanstonenope doesn't work20:37
charlie-tcadvanstone: what is it you are trying to do exactly?20:37
dvanstoneshow the notification area20:38
charlie-tcaright-click the panel, left-click notification area, click add20:38
dvanstonesays it is already running20:39
dvanstoneI do overlook the obvious though20:39
dvanstonealso on the clock applet why does it show a zero b4 the hour on pm20:40
charlie-tcaMaybe you don't have anything in the notification area to be shown20:41
dvanstonenetwork?20:41
charlie-tcatry right-clicking the clock and see if there are properties you can change20:41
charlie-tcaI don't use it20:41
charlie-tcaXubuntu doesn't always show the network icon20:42
dvanstonehmmm say what?20:42
charlie-tcaMy 10.04 never shows network20:42
charlie-tcaYou may be able to change the clock properties to show time how you want to see it.20:42
dvanstonea custom entry20:43
dvanstonewhat are other ways to get to the network settings20:43
dvanstoneaside from ifconfig20:44
Sysialt+F2 "nm-applet"20:45
dvanstoneso xubuntu is xfce or is that a different desktop20:45
charlie-tcaXubuntu replaces Gnome with Xfce, yes20:46
charlie-tcabut no, Xubuntu is not Xfce. Xfce is a separate project completely20:46
charlie-tcajust as gnome is not Ubuntu20:46
charlie-tcaand KDE is not Kubuntu20:46
dvanstonejust curious because at login the option exists to select xfce or xubuntu20:46
Sysithey are different sessions20:47
charlie-tcaXfce is the group that does the hard part. We take what they do and put it together so you can use it easily20:48
dvanstonelet me go to that comp20:49
