I'm trying to fix someone's broken Ubuntu 10.10 system, and need help restoring grub [08:05] I booted from a 10.04 usb stick, ran grub-install, and no errors were reported [08:06] I rebooted, and there is no grub showing at all, and nothing happening [08:06] I booted again from the usb stick, and tried to use the grub-install from the installed 10.04 partition, but then grub-mkimage complains about "invalid ELF header" [08:06] so it seems that grub changed the way it compiles its binaries or something, but I'm out of ideas [08:07] anyone who can help? [08:11] fwolff: did they upgrade their system from previous versions of Ubuntu? [08:11] hello guys [08:11] no, it was a clean install of 10.10 [08:11] hi somaunn [08:11] netbook edition, if that matters [08:12] i want to know it's good or not to run ubuntu on old presario 1200 with 32Mb of RAM [08:12] it's actually running Win 2000 [08:12] somaunn: you might need to use one of the cut-down versions like Lubuntu [08:12] fwolff: there was a change in 10.04 I think to grub2 [08:13] it would be better trying to do a fix using 10.10 if you can [08:13] superfly, is that light ubuntu faster and better than Xubuntu [08:13] somaunn: I'm not sure [08:15] because i actually have xubuntu iso [08:16] you can try it, but xubuntu uses GTK, which can be quite heavy [08:17] superfly, thanks for help will download and try it [08:17] bye, guys [14:56] hello guys [14:58] superfly: 10.10 did the trick [15:03] fwolff: ah, figured it might [15:03] hi somaunn [15:12] hi superfly [15:12] i'm actually working on project [15:13] i want to make a web calendar or online calendar [15:13] somaunn: just for fun?
