rethussomeone here use xfce with kde backend?12:46
MorphixNWhi12:51
charlie-tcarethus: Xfce and KDE are both desktop environments. They replace each other12:52
rethusi know, but xfce has the option to use Gnome or KDE backend-packages12:53
rethusyou never seen this option12:53
MorphixNWyou can have multiple DE installed, and you can select which one you want at logon12:53
MorphixNWI am still having problems with the "startup disk creator", I am yet to see it boot from the hard drive lol12:56
MorphixNWbut I think the problem is the target machine and not the "startup disk creator"12:56
MorphixNWand so I am trying one more time, this time using a large USB Stick as oppose to a USB Hard Drive (USB Powered)12:56
charlie-tcatry all the usb ports12:56
MorphixNWthe machine is not powering the usb hard drive12:57
MorphixNWit did.... ONCE12:57
MorphixNWbut I cant make it boot from it again12:57
MorphixNWI have a 4GB USB Stick that is currently being turned into a startup disk12:58
MorphixNWI think it will work fine from that12:58
MorphixNWdoes anyone know if it possible to turn a USB Stick into a Smart Card for secure log ons?12:59
MorphixNWis this channel always this quite during the day? (GMT London)13:09
charlie-tcayes13:10
ptrcHello13:10
charlie-tcaMorphixNW: most of IRC seems to run on Eastern Standard Time, UTC -513:11
charlie-tcawell, at least the ubuntu stuff13:11
MorphixNWhi ptrc13:12
MorphixNWtheir is more life in a grave yard lol13:12
ptrcI have a notebook : AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile technology TL-50 1.60GHz 895 Mo of RAM and a desktop pc : AMD Athlon XP 2600+ 2.08GHz, 1.50 Go of RAM13:13
ptrcdoes it make sens to install xubuntu on it? or should I rather put ubuntu? thanks13:13
MorphixNWI think either will run well :)13:13
MorphixNWpersonally I like xfce413:15
MorphixNW!cluster13:15
ptrcok and does the boot time change a lot between xubuntu and ubuntu? If yes maybe with xubuntu on a notebook, it is like having a tablet pc starting very fast...13:15
charlie-tcaboot times should be about the same.13:15
MorphixNWsame really, but both can be tweaked to decrease the boot time13:16
ptrcok than you13:16
charlie-tcaMorphixNW: I think I told you the wrong time zone. It seems to run on Pacific Standard Time, which is even worse, UTC -813:17
charlie-tcaI am mountain time, which is 6:17 AM here now13:17
MorphixNWtat explains it, as it 13:17 here right now13:17
ptrcI will first try the boot cd anyway because I am afraid my network card will not be recognized (it is really old like 12 years)13:18
MorphixNWptrc are you using 10.10?13:18
MorphixNW10.10 is much better at recognising hardware :)13:18
ptrcMorphixNW: I am a newbie, at this point I have seven on my notebook and XP on my desktop but tired of this so I will change both to (x)ubuntu13:19
MorphixNWmy media-centre is 10.04 which I had much trouble getting setup, in the end I replaced the main board to make it all work, however, on this machine which is 10.10 I had no trouble with the board :)13:19
ptrcOk I will go for 10.10 then, thanks for the trick13:19
MorphixNWptrc: download the latest stable release (10.10)13:19
MorphixNWthe odds that it will get most of your hardware if not all of it are much higher13:20
MorphixNWeverything worked out of the box for me, well apart from my damn touchscreen13:21
ptrcok :)13:21
MorphixNWwhere previously on 10.04 this very same board gave me hell13:21
ptrcI hope to be as successfull with 10.10 ;)13:23
MorphixNW:)13:23

ShootEmUpMorphixNW, I'm tring to kill my swap partition and just go with a swap file19:26
MorphixNWi used gparted to do it19:26
ShootEmUpI know, I just have to remove it from fstab19:27
MorphixNWwiped out the partition, then recreated it as ext2 with a mount point in my home dir19:27
MorphixNWthen add it to fstab19:27
MorphixNWjust remove the swap line or comment it out19:27
MorphixNWbut also you will need to add the new drive in fstab19:27
MorphixNWI recovered 3GB :P19:28
MorphixNWwhich stores my pics nicely19:28
ShootEmUpI know, I'm killing swap, then using the live CD to extened my / partition19:28
MorphixNWI suppose you could also expand one of the other partitions to use up the space19:28
MorphixNW:)19:28
MorphixNWhate to say but Bindows from Blista onwards has been able to do that without a reboot19:30
ShootEmUpI know, I have vista dual-boot19:30
MorphixNWI think even 2K3 Server could too19:30
MorphixNWbtw 2K3 is my fav OS of all time19:30

ShootEmUpI got an old HP, it rab good when I used it19:33
MorphixNWI had the Dell running CentOS19:33
MorphixNWit has 2x600Mhz and 1GB of RAM ECC (4x256)19:34
MorphixNWI litterally have enough hardware to build a data-centre in my attic :)19:35
MorphixNWyears ago I would of had every single working machine up running and doing something (probably pointlessly) :)19:36
MorphixNWI found a hard drive that when plugged in booted up a working installation of Mandrake 9.2 that reported the last login data as 200419:37
ShootEmUplol19:37
MorphixNWI was impressed to see it boot :)19:37
ShootEmUpalright, back up to xubuntu, safe and sound19:38
MorphixNW:)19:38
ShootEmUpno swap partition any more19:38
MorphixNWawesome19:38

ShootEmUp1023MB swap (1GB swap file)19:39
MorphixNWmaybe its because I am LVM Encryption?19:39
ShootEmUpmost likely19:40
MorphixNWhowcome pulseaudio uses so much CPU?19:41
MorphixNWit sets itself to -1119:41
MorphixNWmanually lowering it to normal doesnt seem to affect it working, so why does tit automatically run so high?19:42
ShootEmUpI'm not sure19:44
ShootEmUpmine isn't runing that high19:45
MorphixNWcan it be altered?19:46
ShootEmUpI'm not quite sure, time to google19:46

charlie-tcaMerry Christmas, knome20:58
charlie-tcaAre you having a good holiday time?20:59
charlie-tcacinmoon: Did you install Xubuntu?20:59
cinmoonyes, also tried unity, there is a xubuntu option but it just hangs on the desktop background ctrl+alt+del to bringup the shutdown menu is all that I could get working. I'm currently in a mythbuntu/xubuntu session, which works after closing the mythtv front end21:00
charlie-tcaXubuntu does not use gnome, and it also doesn't use unity21:00
cinmoonthe point is, none of the desktops are working, including straight xubuntu21:01
knomecharlie-tca, no complaining. read a good book, having a beer and listening to good music. though i would rather be home than here at my mum's, since i'm a bit sick21:01
knomecharlie-tca, and you?21:01
charlie-tcaSounds like something wrong with the install. If you have unity, mythbuntu, etc, all in there21:01
