sourcemakerThe use of GnuPG Agent is enabled in GnuPG's configuration file... However, the agent does not seem to be running. What wrong?14:15
yofelwhilo: ktorrent should build depend on 'libktorrent-dev (>= 1.1~beta0~)' - not >= 1.1~beta014:16
yofelsince your libktorrent is << 1.1~beta014:16
yofeladding the ~ should make it work14:16
yofelwhilo: a better place to ask this would be #ubuntu-packaging though14:18
BluesKajwhilo, maybe you could just use the default ktorrent from the package manager , sometimes "builds" aren't worth the troubles that come with dev apps14:31
BluesKajpersonally I prefer deluge14:31
rtdoshow do i permanently disable fast user switching?14:37
whiloBluesKaj: well in this case i need this upstream version for my own package14:44
whiloktorrent 4.1beta1 will likely be released soon14:44
BluesKajwhilo,you could ask in #ktorrent14:47
yofelsince this is purely packaging related asking in #ktorrent probably won't help though14:50
whilook rebuilding now, thanks for the help guys!14:57
BluesKajinteresting that some ppl feel they need the devel/upstream versions , unless they are developers themselves . I"m using a dev build of mplayer , but the resulting app wasn't worth all the trouble of building the app from tar and make and make install plus acouple of warnings about libs that were missing15:05

matsMy Kontact is broken in Lucid after updating. It needs libkontactinterface.so.4, but I can't install the libkontactinterface4 package. Help! What repositories should I use?16:33

Tallkensorry21:51
surunveriHi21:52
surunvericould anyone help me with kubuntu suddenly working very slowly? :D21:52
rorksurunveri: you can open "System Monitor" and check if there's a process using a lot of recources. It might also be that it got slow after some event, for example an update.21:55
surunveriyes21:59
surunveriupdate was probably the event21:59
surunveriwell i had a non-official kubuntu repository or ppa whatever it is in use21:59
surunveriafter changing to the official one21:59
surunverieverything got slow but21:59
surunverii didnt notice it at first because i wasnt doing aynthing that would require system resources21:59
surunveriso that's only the only cause i can think of22:00
surunverii checked monitor but there isnt anything22:00
surunverihow could there be a process using too many resources?22:00
surunverican kubuntu get malware or such?22:00
surunveri:D22:00
Lycanthrophi there22:01
Lycanthropi have a probleme with kubuntu 10.1022:01
Lycanthropkde tells me about removed sound devices22:02
Lycanthropand lists my HDA NVidia sounddevice22:02
Lycanthropeventhough I didn't remove it22:02
Lycanthropand alsamixer still detects it22:02
Lycanthropbut in the settings for phonon22:02
Lycanthropit isn't shown anymore, so I have no 5.1 sound (only stereo, since phonon doesn't recognise my correct sounddevice)22:03
Lycanthropanyone knows, how to handle this?22:04
Lycanthropi think I'm gonna die without my music22:04
surunverianyone?22:05
surunveriis there a recent update that may affect performance coz the difference is pretty huge22:05
surunveriit's amazing how much trouble this OS manages to cause22:06
surunveri:D22:06
Lycanthropwell22:07
LycanthropI never had problems22:07
Lycanthropthis time is the first time22:07
Lycanthropi have trouble with kubuntu22:07
Lycanthrop3 years without any problem22:07
Lycanthropthan upgraded to 10.10 and my sound doesn't work correct anymore -.-22:07
Lycanthropthen*22:07
surunveriyea i've had kubuntu for 6 months and have had to reinstall it several times by now :D22:08
rorksurunveri: I don't know, I just have some questions that might help others to fix your problem: which repository/ppa did you use and do you use and which version of kubuntu do you use?22:08
surunveri10.04 kubuntu22:08
surunveriktorrent didnt work because i wasnt using corret ppa i dont remember what it was but it suddenly stopped working after some update22:09
surunveriso i come to this channel, and people ask questions and such and they figure out i've incorrect ppa22:09
surunveriso i change to the correct ppa and isntall ktorrent again and it works fine22:09
surunverilater though i just notice now everything is reallly slow22:09
surunveriso im assuming that after changing the ppa and updating it got something that affects performance22:09
Lycanthropkubuntu's kde isn't the fastest one ^^22:10
surunveriyea22:10
surunverii've a slow computer that probably has a lot to do with it22:10
Lycanthropmaybe22:10
surunveribut still some applications went from perfectly usable into seriously annoying22:10
surunveridue to the difference in performance22:10
surunveria change that's clearly observable :D22:10
Lycanthropwas your kubuntu slow all the time, or was it faster before you updated it?22:11
surunverias i already tried to say it was faster before the update22:11
rorkThere's no such update in the standard kubuntu 10.04 repositories that I'm aware of, it might be in the ppa you're using though22:11
surunverii think the ppa is teh standard22:12
surunveriit was given by people on this channel22:12
surunveriso is the only solution now to22:14
surunveriinstall kubuntu for the Nth time22:14
surunveriand then be reasonable and not apply any system updates?22:14
surunveri:D22:14
rorkYou may want to see if there is a problem in the ppa's and wether it's fixed in the next update. Many updates are security updates so not updating is a bad idea, maybe just don't use ppa's or only the stable ones.22:17
surunveriso you're saying that22:18
surunverikubuntu isnt safe because you need the security updates?22:18
amichairI copied a large directory over smb to an ntfs partition, but the file timestamps are all set to the copying time. How do I preserve the original creation/modification times?22:18
surunverii dont even know what ppa means actually i think it's like a source of system uppdates?22:18
Dragnslcramichair- if you do it from a shell, cp -a should work22:19
Snowhogsurunveri: ppa=personal package archive22:20
amichairDragnslcr: it's impossible to do over smb (network share copying)?22:20
surunverihi snowhow22:21
surunverisurprise22:21
surunveri:---------------D22:21
FloodBotK2surunveri: Please don't flood; use http://paste.ubuntu.com to paste; don't use Enter as punctuation.22:21
surunverii get so much trouble with kubuntu it looks like im trying to proove it's not good :D22:23
Dragnslcramichair- you're doing it through smbclient?22:25
rorksurunveri: yes, but that's the same for any other OS. At least it's relatively safe because there are security updates ;).22:25
surunveriexcept it isnt22:25
surunveri:D22:25
amichairDragnslcr: I just copied it over using dolphin, the source being and smb share, and the target an internal ntfs partition22:25
surunverii had xp before using kubuntu and i was only forced to change because my harddrive died and tbh22:25
Snowhogsurunveri: If you start 'fresh' - a formated HD; both root and /home partitions - and install Kubuntu and stick with the 'official' repositories it comes with, you won't have the issues you seem to be having. It's when you start adding ppas and/or downloading applications directly - not using KPackagekit (or Synaptic if you install it) - that issues can occur.22:25
surunverii didnt have ever any security problems or viruses or performance problems22:26
surunverii didnt add teh ppas myself22:26
surunverithough i did get maybe 6 security fixes for xp total22:26
Dragnslcramichair- if you have the Samba share mounted, try cp -a and see if it works. I'm not certain if it will or not22:26
surunveriwhich were selected from the blur of useless updates22:27
Snowhogsurunveri: IF the ppas were part of the installation you did, then the .iso you got/burned isn't "official"22:27
surunverii dont know i think i got it from a seemigly official source22:27
amichairDragnslcr: ok, and since it's a huge directory, is there a way to only copy/update the attributes to the new files rather than copy all of the content from scratch?22:27
surunveribut tbh i cant think of a single reason why i would prefer this OS22:27
Dragnslcramichair- not that I can think of, short of maybe some bash wizardry22:27
amichairDragnslcr: oh well. thanks for your help!22:28
Snowhogsurunveri: "seeminly" doesn't cut it. Get your .iso from http://www.kubuntu.org/getkubuntu/download22:28
surunveriseriously i dont remember where i got it from22:28
surunverii think it was from that source though22:28
surunveriand yes i've started 'fresh' because i've had to install this OS several times by now22:29
surunveri:D22:29
amichairsurunveri: you should check the iso's hash against the officially published hash to make sure it's the real deal22:29
surunveriyeah i could do that if i gets to the point where i've to reinstall this thing22:29
surunveribut right now the way im feeling it is that i'll do my best to install some other OS at that point22:29
surunveribut does anyone have any idea how using the standard PPA may have caused system performance to drop?22:30
Snowhogsurunveri: It wouldn't. We simply don't have sufficient information about your PC to even begin to profer an informed reply.22:31
amichairsurunveri: btw, the ppas aren't officially supported as far as I know (even though the kubuntu developers create and use them) - only the official repositories are22:31
surunveriso22:31
surunverichrist this is getting ridiculous22:32
Dragnslcrsurunveri- sure, if you upgraded a program to a version that has performance problems22:32
amichairsurunveri: assuming you're talking about the kubuntu ppas... otherwise they are completely unrelated to kubuntu devs too22:32
surunveriso i shouldnt have gotten the ppa that made ktorrent work because it's not actually supported officially?22:32
surunveri.D22:32
surunveriwhich was given by snowhog on this channel too22:32
surunveriso conclusion is ? with  Kubuntu, either way you're screwed22:33
amichairsurunveri: they usually work, and are usually useful (I use them too). But they're still not officiall supported... just sayin'.22:33
Snowhogsurunveri: This is a support channel, not a 'bash Kubuntu' channel. Please be careful.22:33
surunverisure22:33
surunveribut you must understand where this is coming from? :D22:33
amichairsurunveri: going through the full testing required for official support takes time. If you wait for the next official release, things will probably be updated and fixed and tested.22:34
surunverii've problem: ktorrent that is installed with kubuntu no longer works because of package inconsistency. Ok I dont know about that stuff. I come to this channel and you say 'I've wrong ppa, get the standard ppa' ok i do that and after wasting both your and my time for about 2 hours, the ktorrent works again, all the while im cursing how much trouble this causes22:34
surunverithen it turns out that fixing the ktorrent caused another problem because i shouldnt have used the ppa in the first place, which then results to that i come here again udnerstandably disappointed when the 'fix' to this problem seems to be reinstalling kubuntu again22:35
rorksurunveri: the conclusion is you shouldn't use ppa's unless you know what you're doing. Can you !pastebin your /etc/apt/sources.lost so we at least know which ppa's you're currently using?22:35
surunveriso ok yeah it's not a bash kubuntu channel but i wouldnt be here if i didnt have a problem and i know it's not your fault that i do have this problem22:35
surunverihow do i get that?22:35
amichairthe ktorrent in the official kubuntu installation doesn't have any dependency issues that I know of...22:36
Lycanthropwell now22:36
Lycanthropanybody knows, why kde tells me that my main sounddevice (HDA NVidia) was removed, eventhough it WAS NOT removed?22:36
surunveriand just so you know the ktorrent problem was caused by applying system updates in the first place, which leads to a natural conclusion, to avoid problems, dont apply system updates22:36
Lycanthropphonon also doesn't show it22:36
rorksurunveri: open it in a text editor (Kate for example) or `cat /etc/apt/sources.list`22:36
surunverito counter that you're arguing that kubuntu isnt secure so you should get the security updates22:37
surunveri:D22:37
surunveriok22:37
surunverihttp://pastebin.com/Z55k7L1C22:38
DragnslcrLycanthrop- I get that too, but my sound seems to still work fine22:38
amichairLycanthrop: I got that too for a while after every reboot, eventually clicked the "stop bugging me" button, and never heard from it again (and everything works fine). Never did figure out what caused the message to appear.22:38
Lycanthropwell22:40
Lycanthropfor me22:40
Lycanthropit doesn't work fine22:40
Lycanthropsince22:40
Lycanthropphonon only shows me "Internal Audio Analog Stereo"22:40
Lycanthropand not the correct HDA NVidia22:41
Lycanthropso I cannot configure my 5.1 sound22:41
Lycanthropbecause22:41
Lycanthropkubuntu or at least phonon thinks I only have a stereo soundcard ...22:41
=== Shadowolf is now known as Abhish
Lycanthropworked fine in in 10.04, then I upgraded to maverick22:42
Lycanthropand now sound doesn't work correct anymore22:42
amichairsurunveri: most security updates are not specific to kubuntu, but the ubuntu core packages, linux kernel, etc. And yes, no system is 100% secure (but some are relatively more secure than others). And normal  security updates are generally well tested to not break anything... you shouldn't fear them22:43
amichairLycanthrop: I have the nvidia devices listed (though I don't use 5.1). maybe it also has to do with Pulse Audio which began started being installed by default (and I manually removed)... I don't know enough about it though22:45
Lycanthropwell even pulse isn't shown :/22:45
surunveriyea sure but i have problems because of updates22:45
surunveriit's only natural to avoid them22:45
amichairsurunveri: from what u said, the updates came from outside the official repositories, no?22:47
Lycanthropit only show this shitty "Internal Audio Analog Stereo"22:48
Lycanthropu can see here: http://www.abload.de/img/soundqx9n.png22:48
amichairsurunveri: kubuntu is not flawless, but it sounds like you got yourself into a bit of a pickle22:48
amichairLycanthrop: That looks familiar, I think removing PA brought it back for me (if I remember correctly)22:50
Lycanthrophow can I remove PulseAudio?22:52
LycanthropWhen I try to remove it22:52
Lycanthropapt-get tells me22:52
Lycanthropthat kubuntu-desktop depends on it oO22:52
Lycanthropoh22:52
Lycanthropno22:52
Lycanthropit doesn't22:53
Lycanthropahh22:53
Lycanthropbefore I tried to reinstall alsa22:53
Lycanthropnot pa22:53
amichairyeah, I just 'apt-get remove pulseaudio'-ed22:53
amichairand that was that.22:53
Lycanthropyeah22:53
SnowhogLycanthrop: Please stop using your Enter key as punctuation. Type out your whole comment then press enter.22:53
Lycanthropsorry22:53
Lycanthropyeah, l will try, wether this will work. i hope so ^^22:54
ameliehi23:08
ameliei have trouble with the following23:08
amelietried to install widgets and doesn't work23:08
Snowhogsurunveri: This might help: http://pastebin.com/GeFjWSt223:13
Snowhogamelie: Onto the Panel or to the Desktop?23:15
amelieon to the desktop23:16
ameliei mean23:16
ameliei hit the upper right corner, it opens the widget panel window23:16
Lycanthropthanks to amichair, removing pa worked23:16
ameliethen, it has a button to download more widgets23:16
amichairLycanthrop: cool :-)23:17
ameliei do, the windows says they are "installed" but they don't show up in my desktop23:17
Snowhogamelie: They won't. Downloading new widgets isn't  the same as selcting from the available and installing.23:17
Lycanthroppulseaudio seems to be as crappy, as everyone said :D23:18
ameliein earlier versions of kubuntu i just selected it and already been installed23:18
Snowhogamelie: Right-click on the desktop and select Add widgets. Find what you want in the list and double-click on it.23:18
ameliei mean "get new widgets" not the one that are already in the system23:19
Snowhogamelie: "get new widgest" does not install them.23:20
Lycanthropamichair: do you have the same strange thing, that the jacks have different positions under linux? (e. g. under windows front speaker goes into the red slot, under kubuntu into the green one) oO23:22
amelieso, how do i install them?23:22
amichairLycanthrop: nope, jacks are ok23:22
Lycanthropwell23:23
Lycanthropwondering why i have this strange effect here23:23
Lycanthropannoying, always to change the jacks, when I boot another os23:23
amichairLycanthrop: how bizarre23:24
LycanthropVERY bizarre I think23:24
Lycanthropalso in 10.04 i had the jacks always same as in windows23:24
Snowhogamelie: After you have "Installed" it - clicking on Install, you have to select it from the Add widgets list. Again, right-click on the desktop or the Panel, select Add widgets and search/look for what you installed. Then double-click on it.23:26
=== Muzer is now known as MuzerAway
ubuntuhhhhola23:33
surunveriis there some services that could be shut down in kubuntu to improve performance?23:35
surunverilike for an example what's this KDED remote base url notifier ?23:35
amichairsurunveri: strigi/nepomuk (desktop search and semantic desktop stuff), for one23:36
=== MuzerAway is now known as Muzer
amichairsurunveri: in system settings -> desktop search23:36
amichairit will also save you a whole lot of disk space23:36
surunverikk23:37
surunveriwell is there anything i could turn off to make this run better? :D23:37
amichairsurunveri: you can first try to find which processes are using up your cpu/ram, what your bottleneck is, etc.23:37
surunveriidk23:38
surunverithere aint really anything in system monitor using CPU23:38
surunveribut it still runs poorly which is confusing23:38
amichairwhat exactly runs poorly?23:38
surunverialso in the footer section of system monitor CPU load is 100% a lot of the time while it actually isnt 10023:39
amichairsurunveri: I like using htop and iotop to see resource usage23:42
