shadowchaserhello everyone Im new to ubuntu  I have a couple questions17:19
mhall119hi shadowchaser 17:26
mhall119what's your question?17:26
shadowchaserhow do i setup a remote desktop with ubuntu /17:27
mhall119to connect into Ubuntu?17:27
mhall119System->Preferences->Remote Desktop17:28
mhall119click to allow17:28
shadowchaserwell is there away to connect via remote desktop from windows vista to ubuntu17:28
mhall119are you doing this over a LAN, or over the internet?17:28
mhall119shadowchaser: Ubuntu defaults to using VNC, so you'd need a VNC client for Windows17:28
shadowchaserLAN as of now  VNC? lost a little17:28
mhall119okay, lets go back a little17:29
mhall119the "remote desktop" used by windows is based on the RDP protocol17:29
mhall119the "remote desktop" used by Linux (and I think OSX) is based on the VNC protocol17:29
mhall119VNC pretty much just takes snapshots of your desktop, and sends them as images17:30
shadowchaser ok  But I can connect from ubuntu to another ubuntu system over net or lan right17:30
mhall119right, but over the internet requires that you open your firewall to allow incoming VNC connections17:30
mhall119however, VNC isn't encrypted, you don't really want to send unencrypted images of your desktop over the open internet17:31
mhall119there is an RDP-based remote desktop server for Linux, but I've never used it, so I don't know how good it is17:32
shadowchaserOk what I want to do is walkup to a unit with my laptop and connect can this be done  with a straight wired connection with out going through a router/17:33
mhall119let me see if I understand, you want to connect to a local Ubuntu box from your laptop, on the same LAN?17:34
shadowchaserok Let me explain what I am doing is putting Computers out in certain areas and what I want to do is go to a certain computer and be able to access it with out actually  connecting a keyboard and mouse17:35
mhall119and you want a desktop, not just a command line connection, right?17:36
shadowchaseryes 17:36
mhall119okay, VNC is going to be the easiest way17:37
mhall119and if it's only on the local lan, it's secure enough17:37
mhall119you'd just need to know the IP address of the box17:37
shadowchaserwhat it is, I am installing a digital Advertisement network and in order to update the units I want to walk up plug a ethernet cable into it and update my files17:37
mhall119and have Remote Desktop enabled on the box, by going to System->Preferences->Remote Desktop17:37
mhall119oh, plug the ethernet cable into the Ubuntu box?17:38
shadowchaserYes 17:38
mhall119okay, are these boxes connected to a network already?17:38
mhall119will they have an IP address?17:39
shadowchaserNo not connected to a network17:39
shadowchaserbut If the need arise I could set up networks 17:39
mhall119hmmm, I'm not entirely sure what steps would be required to do this17:39
mhall119but you'd need a crossover cable at a minimum17:39
mhall119i think you'll have to assign static IP addresses to each box, then give your laptop a static IP address on the same subnet17:40
shadowchaserit would be easier to set up networks  wouldnt it that way I could connect from any point via wirless signal17:40
mhall119but then you would just plug in the crossover cable, point your vnc client to the box's IP and connect17:40
mhall119yeah, that would be easier17:41
shadowchaserjsut do a local lan with out internet access17:41
mhall119yeah17:41
mhall119that way you could connect to any box from anywhere else on the network17:41
shadowchaserok answers my question so mhall119 where are you from?17:42
mhall119Lakeland, you?17:42
shadowchasertown called Brewton 60 miles North Of pensacola17:42
mhall119oh, so you're practically in Alabama then aren't you?17:42
mhall119or Georgia17:43
shadowchaserAlabama17:43
mhall119I think maxolasersquad is our closest member do you17:43
shadowchaserI talked to a guy named zoopster and he helped me out on a few of my problems  17:44
mhall119yeah, zoopster's a cool guy, from Tampa17:45
shadowchaserI really enjoy using Ubuntu I only have one laptop with windows for netflix and as soon as I can get it on Ubunutu Im killing windows 17:45
mhall119yeah, I'm not sure what netflix's problem is17:46
mhall119but, i've got it on my Wii, so I'm still happy17:46
shadowchaserwe have a wii also but Its easier to take the laptop to the ebd room plug it in our lcd in there and watch 17:48
shadowchaserwell oneday Ill figure this remote desktop out  17:51
shadowchaserone last question do I need to open a certain port? 17:54
mhall119on what?17:54
shadowchasereither machine or my router17:55
mhall119if you're on the same subnet, you won't go through the router, so no to that17:55
mhall119if you installed/enabled a firewall on the Ubuntu machine, you will need to open port 5900 to incoming connections17:56
mhall119but the default Ubuntu install doesn't have a firewall running17:56
shadowchaserok17:56
shadowchasermy desktop is wirless and the machine Im running on is wireless so its running through my wireless router17:57
mhall119right, but unless it crosses to another network, it shouldn't go through the router's firewall17:57
mhall119in that case, the router is just asking like a switch or hub17:57
shadowchasergot ya 17:57
shadowchaserwell i've been up for going on 24 hours so thats alot to do with it also 17:58
mhall119yeah, things start to go funny after the 22 hour mark18:00
shadowchaserNo kidding18:00
shadowchaserwell you know might help if I hired an IT guy too lol18:04
