Phineasscreen-x,  just waiting for a dvd and a game to arive in the post09:49
screen-xthat you were ordering yesterday.. something to do with garfield09:49
Phineasscreen-x,  yeah, Garfields Pet Force in 3D (comes with 4 pairs of glasses)09:51
screen-xPhineas: how did you become interested in ubuntu?09:52
Phineasscreen-x,  the IT guy at my last school told me about it (the school ran on ubuntu) but i was so excited over having ubuntu for the first time i overwited windows and lost my worenty09:54
screen-xA school that runs ubuntu, cool :)09:54
screen-xWhich school was that?09:54
Phineasscreen-x,  well... it wasn't a school, it was a learner centre09:57
Phineasscreen-x,  in Cambridge10:00
Phineasscreen-x,  call the red Balloon10:02
screen-xsounds like a coded phrase..10:02

bigcalmMorning peeps10:11
screen-xmorning bigcalm10:14
bigcalmWhat's new in ubuntu land?10:17
screen-xnot sure... bit scared of trying natty atm10:19
DJonesI'm tempted to give natty a go on a spare computer I've got10:20
Phineasbigcalm,  morning10:21
bigcalmHi10:22
Phineashows it going10:22
Phineasbigcalm,  hows it going10:22
bigcalmBusy10:22
daubersMorning10:22
Phineasbigcalm,  how are your pets?10:23
bigcalmI don't have any pets10:23
bigcalmHi daubers10:23
Phineasbigcalm,  busy? its only thursday10:23
screen-xmorning daubers :)10:24
Phineasdaubers,  morning daubers10:24
Phineaswhats changing host mean?10:24
Phineas?10:25
olylol, im not the only one avoiding natty at the moment then :p10:25
screen-xoly: no :)10:25
daubersscreen-x: I tried using natty for day to day stuff yesterday, but issues where getting in the way10:25
olyi am tempted as i want to try the latest gnome-shell and i can not find a ppa for 10.10 thats upto date10:26
olyand compiling failed and i am not intrested in trying to find out why :p10:27
bigcalmI'm happy with a stable OS10:27
daubersI think Unity will be aces when it's finished10:27
daubersSeems a much better idea for wide screen displays and multi-monitors10:27
* screen-x tries to think of a joke about the sort of operating system that could run on an animal shed, but fails. 10:28
bigcalmBe a part of the hurd10:28
olyi have always had the development releases, but not sure about this unity seems they are taking it on a bit to soon to me and should develop it as a seperate packages until its ready that way people can try if they want10:28
olyi know it sucks on the netbook i tried and the older interface worked much better :p10:29
daubersnew unity performs very well10:29
daubersI think it's a good idea to give people a really tough challenge now and again, and if it's not ready for release then they'll just switch normal gnome back as the default10:30
dauberseasy backup plan10:30
* bigcalm wants to know where his Kindle is10:31
* Phineas wants to know where his dvd is10:31
nperryhttp://www.wiltshiretimes.co.uk/news/8758646.Wiltshire_grandfather_spends_three_days_on_motorway/10:31
nperryThis guy needs a sat nav.10:32
bigcalmYou think he has my Kindle?10:32
olythink my main concern though is wayland, as i understand it we loose the networking of the desktop :/ which for me is one of the biggest strengths10:32
DJonesbigcalm: He might be delivering it10:32
* Phineas nperry does not know the secret about Phineas10:32
olyand has never really been utilised to its full potential10:32
nperryoh hang on he had a sat nev, bless him....10:32
daubersoly: You can run X on Wayland if you want10:32
Phineasor who he realy is10:32
daubersoly: And that transition is a way off yet10:32
olyah that should help10:33
acperkinsdaubers: running X on wayland is fine, but it only works one-way10:33
olyi always thought with X you should be able to move your apps with your machines10:33
acperkinsI wouldn't be able to run a Wayland app across the network on my OpenBSD box10:34
olyso if i have a desktop running upstairs and i jump on my laptop would be cool if i could bring that app to my laptop10:34
olyyou can kind of do this by launching a new instance and forwarding it to your machine but why not just grab the running app :p10:34
* Phineas nperry does not know the secret about Phineas10:35
Phineasor who he realy is10:35
olythat way any device with x could grab the app,10:35
olybut i have never found anyone who is working on such a thing and i have hunted :)10:36
daubersoly: You'd have to move the background process stuff too10:36
Phineashave i said that already?10:36
olywhy the app could still run on the other device i am only intrested in the display10:37
* Phineas feels ignored10:37
olythats how it currently works if i ssh to a machine and launch firefox the processing is done on the remote machine and just the display is sent10:38
screen-xoly:  like xinerama but with the displays on separate machines10:38
screen-xor like x2x but for apps10:38
olyso why is it not possible to redirect the running app10:38
olyyeah, it could even add the desktop in with your current desktops or something10:39
bigcalmIs there a better way of monitoring rdiff-backup other than watch du -h ?10:39
olythat would be neat10:39
screen-xbigcalm: presumably it writes a log file?10:40
bigcalmI think so10:40
screen-xcould monitor that with $monitoring_system or logwatch or whatever.10:41
czajkowskiAloha10:41
bigcalmHey czajkowski *hugs* :)10:42
* screen-x upgrades rsnapshot server to lucid, not much work going today to miss..10:42
screen-xmorning czajkowski10:42
screen-xczajkowski: how's life in the south east?10:43

czajkowskiwas good lots of sleeping and eating, what more could I need :p10:45
czajkowskiscreen-x: yes indeed10:45
* daubers considers popping into M&S for an alarm clock and some slippers10:45
olyhttp://www.faqs.org/docs/Linux-mini/Remote-X-Apps.html10:45
czajkowskidaubers: ello cake man10:45
olynever found that before looks promising :-D10:45
screen-xczajkowski: daubers was biscuit man yesterday - he's widening his skills!10:46
czajkowskioh my I shall need to sample some!10:46
czajkowskiI found the Scotts clan yesterday, need to get the box rehidden10:46
* screen-x failed to interpret the previous line10:49

screen-xlooks tasty :)10:50
czajkowskiaddictive10:52
bigcalmAnybody having trouble with bytemark servers being slow?10:54
Phineasme10:57
bigcalmThen I blame you10:58
Phineasfor what10:58
bigcalmThem being slow. I just wanted to vent :P10:59
bigcalmWow, this is becoming unseable11:00
* Phineas continues to make the bytemark servers slow11:01
screen-xPhineas: are you using a bytemark vps to DOS the amazon delivery tracking system?11:02
Phineasscreen-x,  something like that11:03
DJonesbigcalm: Maybe 4chan are hosted on bytemark & the ddos attack on them is hitting all bytemark servers :)11:04
bigcalmAh crappy :(11:04
bigcalmDJones: thanks11:04
* Phineas does an evil laugh11:04
bigcalmOh, you don't know, just a maybe11:04
* bigcalm disables pagespeed and restarts apache11:05
* DJones puts on a tinfoil hat & adds to the conspiracy, bigcalm is the person runningthe 4chan site11:05
screen-xthat's hilarous.. the last hop before www.4chan.org is series.of.tubes11:05
bigcalmHehe11:05
DJonesHeh11:05
bigcalmWow, it was pagespeed11:06
bigcalmMy server is useable again!11:06
Phineasall part of my master plan11:07
brobostigonmorning all.11:18
Phineasmorning brobostigon11:25
Phineasbrobostigon, did you check that game out11:25
brobostigonPhineas: i have just been too busy,11:26
bigcalmKindle be here :D11:26
Phineasbigcalm,  witing for the parcel in the post?11:26
Phineasis this normal sounds for a floppy? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Qz9a8kYYkA11:28
ali1234yes11:34
Phineasali1234,  good it sounds loud11:36
Phineasanyway be11:36
Phineasbye11:36
DJonesI thought the normal sound for a floppy disk was the bang/clunk as it lands in the bin11:37
screen-xI wish the term floppy had been adopted for usb mass storage devices, I never know what to call them..11:39
screen-xand 3.5" floppies weren't floppy, so the term would be just as accurate.11:39
DJonesI normally just with "stick"11:39
DJonesscreen-x: Thats like the "removable" hard drive on the ancient ICL I used as a student, they were removable as long as you had two people & a small crane to lift them11:40
screen-x:)11:41
DJonesAnd it had 8" floppy's11:41
screen-xand various ancient "portables"11:41
DJonesYeah, I can remember using an Osbourne (I think) luggable with a 4" CRT screen11:42
DJonesSomething like this http://www.laptopsarena.com/wp-content/uploads/osborne1.jpg11:43
brobostigoninteresting,11:46
screen-xDJones: what goes in the slots under the floppy drives?11:46
DJonesscreen-x: I think it was just storage space11:47
screen-xthey should have but helium cells in there ;-)11:48
DJonesscreen-x: A bit of a better description/picture http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osborne_111:50
brobostigonportable computer, hmm,11:52
DJonesLooking at this pic http://www.laptopsarena.com/wp-content/uploads/osborne1-opened.jpg The floppy drives look like the ones I had with my Apple II's, sort of large brick shaped11:52
DJonesbrobostigon: Portable in the same way that a suitcase is portable11:53
DJonesCan't remember if it had wheels on the case, I think it might have done, but I'm not certain11:53
brobostigonDJones: yes, that is quite accurate. and a rather large suitcase.11:53
brobostigonDJones: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PPC_512 is another good example.11:56
DJonesheh, I remember those as well11:58
brobostigonDJones: i had one of those when i was young.11:59
DJonesFrom memory, didn't the screen slide down inside the case & the keyboard connected over the top to make the case up12:00
brobostigonyes.12:00
DJonesI like this line from wikipedia "At the time of the PPC640 launch, its price in the UK was so close to standalone 2400 baud modems that it was almost 'buy a modem and get a free luggable PC'.12:01
brobostigonhehe12:01
DJonesHistory repeats itself, buy a mobile broadband dongle & get a free laptop :)12:01
brobostigonkinda, yes.12:01
DJoness/laptop/netbook12:01
ali1234kinda but also not, because broadband dongles cost nothing, you are paying for the contract12:07
ali1234you can get they on payg for literally nothing12:08
ali1234does anyone use the firefox 4 ppa on maverick?12:08
Apacheukhey everyone... is there anyone who could help with a simple scripting question?12:15
matttApacheuk: can certainly try12:18
Apacheukok, why doesn't this work http://paste.ubuntu.com/548813/ I get an error ./test.sh: line 2: [foo: command not found12:19
Apacheukits about as simple as it gets, and as far as I can tell from other websites it should work as expected12:20
=== gary_ is now known as Guest25650
ali1234put a space after [12:24
ali1234and before ]12:24
Apacheukali1234: cheers, wasn't obvious at first glance on the site I'm using as a reference, but now I can see it.... thanks!12:26
KrimZoni have some code files that seem to get detected as plain text - is there any way to fix this cause I use different text editors for code and text?12:49
directhexanyone wanna buy a 26" hdtv? :p13:09
podman99hey all ... i know this will be something simple... using ubuntu-vm-builder on maverick 10.10 built and installed from ISO a VE, i used virsh to define /etc/libvir....... start bt01 and it waits and tells me : http://pastebin.com/xCDCX5a4 ?? any ideas have followed docs perfectly @ https://help.ubuntu.com/community/KVM/CreateGuests13:13
screen-xpodman99: check the permissions on the disk image?13:14
podman99have done13:16
podman99screen-x, my bad ... the image was inside /root/ubuntu-kvm ... moved to /opt/ve and worked13:18
screen-xpodman99: :)13:18
kvarleyThank goodness for androids usb tethering option for the data connection.13:54
kvarleyMy phoneline went down last night at 8pm and bt say theyll fix it by the 5th, that's a loooonnnnggggg time :/13:54
screen-xkvarley: :(13:54
kvarleyscreen-x: What was most irritating is that you don't get to speak to a person about it, you just get put through an automated line. I suppose it saves time and money but as far as I know nobody but the computer knows about my line being down.13:55
DJoneskvarley: tethering is handy, but I find it batters the bandwidth caps13:57
kvarleyDJones: I haven't got 3g here so it seems to be ok13:57
DJonesah, ok13:57
kvarleyDJones: hehe13:58
kvarleyIs there a way in ubuntu to generate the md5 of a file?15:07
screen-xkvarley: md5sum15:07
kvarleyscreen-x: Thanks, thats very nice that its installed by default too :)15:08
screen-xwith its companion sha1sum15:08

KrimZongah, more problems with samba again15:15
KrimZondoes samba access files as though it were the user that was logged in?15:16

KrimZonvia samba15:16
bigcalmpopey: I can has Kindle! I lack graze though15:17
bigcalmI have the say, the screen is wonderful15:18
KrimZonaha, figured it out - made them both the same group15:18
screen-xbigcalm: it looks like there is a printed plastic thing on top of the screen that you have to pull off before you get to the real screen..15:19
bigcalmscreen-x: looks like it, yes15:19
bigcalm"looks"15:19
bigcalmscreen-x: I thought that's what it was, but it's the actual screen. Such amazing quality15:20
screen-xI found the browser copes pretty well, unless you want tabs/windows.15:20
screen-xAlso annoying that it can play mp3s but can't download them.15:20
bigcalmI'm currently reading Dr Dale's Zombie Dictionary: The A-Z Guide to Staying Alive15:21
screen-xA: ask fab what to do. B: blame popey, C: profit?15:21

bigcalmscreen-x: yeah, I don't really need that, I have a nexus one :)15:35

MartijnVdSAlanBell: (unrooted etc.)16:24

awilkinsMaybe gords phone is owned by his employer16:28
MartijnVdSpwned*16:28

MezMartijnVdS: Android doesn't have remote wipe yet.16:29
MartijnVdSMez: uhr.. it does16:29

MartijnVdSMez: "security providers"16:29
MezMartijnVdS: oh. Sorry - for exchange. I'm thinking GApps16:29
awilkinsMy mods to employer-owned hardware are limited to surreptitiously upgrading the RAM so it runs 64-bit Linux better16:29
awilkins(specifically the super monster evil Java modules we're using)16:30
MartijnVdShaha java16:30
awilkins'tis not the Java per-se that's the problem, it's the ultimate craptasticness of the code + the data model16:30
awilkins*sigh* 650,000 lines of Java and counting16:32
daubersEvening16:33
MartijnVdS\o dauberman16:33

daubersawilkins: I'm trying to get it to graph it :)16:35
awilkinsgnuplot!16:35
screen-xawilkins: that's my line16:35
daubersawilkins: Would use gnuplot, but remember doing times in it was a pita16:35
awilkinsgnuplot needs a nice UI16:36
daubersAlso considered using matplotlib16:36
screen-xdaubers: you can specify date/time formats in gnuplot to match your data.16:36
* daubers kills OOo and installs gnuplot16:38
dauberssee if I can remember how to do this16:38
bigcalmPHP & GD!16:40
bigcalmOr ImageMagick16:40
MartijnVdSgnuplot is phat16:40
MartijnVdSalso, graphviz :)16:41
daubersGnuplot is also struggling a bit...16:42
MartijnVdSdaubers: More RAM to the rescue16:42
daubersMartijnVdS: Need moar GHz by the look of the activity monitor16:43
daubersHmmm... stupif gnuplot16:54
screen-x?16:54
daubersRight, this matches yes? set timefmt "%Y-%m-%d %H:%M:%S" and "2010-12-30 16:25:54"16:55
MartijnVdS%FT%T%z FTW16:55
MartijnVdSperl -MPOSIX -e 'print strftime("%FT%T%z\n", localtime)';16:57
screen-xdaubers: looks right16:57
daubersRight, it gives me a graph with 2010.01 and so on, and everything wedged near january when all the data is in december16:57
danfishdaubers: google charts ftw!17:00
daubersRight, lets see if this does any better17:01
daubersForgot set xdata time17:01
* awilkins needs a big stiff drink17:01
danfishhttp://fishms.homelinux.com/power.html17:02
screen-xdanfish: interesting how little temp difference there is between the garden and the greenhouse17:03
awilkinsThat's very swish17:03
* MartijnVdS whispers something like "rrdtool"?17:04
daubersMartijnVdS: rrdtool is for wimps17:04
danfishscreen-x: the 'greenhouse' is actually just a load of timber, covered in some (now mostly) ripped polytunnel material17:05
MartijnVdSdaubers: there's an orange sphere above your house17:05
screen-xMartijnVdS: rrdtool is a bit scary for data horders17:05
MartijnVdSscreen-x: it is17:05
danfishMartijnVdS: that's just the local UFO - don't worry, the tinfoil stops them reading my thoughts :P17:07
olydanfish, what are you using to output those graphs out of interest ?17:08
danfisholy: it's a but messy, but basically a combination of javascript, googlecharts and some python cgi stuff17:09
olyaha, would not mind stealing the code for that :)17:10
olythe dynamic updating graph would fit in nicely with my server web interface :)17:11
danfisholy: np - when I get home I'll 'sanitise' the code and post it17:13
* MartijnVdS hands danfish some "sanitation products"17:14
danfishhaha - remove passwords etc17:15
MartijnVdSdanfish: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BrainBleach17:15
screen-xMartijnVdS: for removing code smells?17:15
MartijnVdSscreen-x: hah, exactly :)17:15
olycheers danfish :)17:21
danfisholy: http://paste.ubuntu.com/548884/ for the libraries and cgi stuff18:04
olyaha cheers danfish will have a look into that :)18:06
screen-xHow do I change the root password of an ldap server using cn=config?18:11
olyscreen-x, i would guess you create an ldif file and use ldifmodify only guessing though :p18:16
olysame way you create ldif files and use ldifadd to do the initial setup18:17
screen-xoly: I set it up with debconf..18:17
olyoh no idea then but you should still be able to do the same thing18:19
screen-xI was struggling with openldap already, and then they way configuration happens completely changed! Thanks for the suggestion though oly.18:21
olyyeah so i found out, i had to heavily modify my code to setup openldap18:23
olybut its design to setup from scratch and manages the admin password for you18:24
olysudo ldapadd -Y EXTERNAL -H ldapi:/// -f myadmin.ldif thats the command it uses to do the initial admin setup though so probably similar to modify18:25
niall_Can Ubuntu 10.10 handle 6 UARTs / 6 RS232 serial ports?20:06
Yorvykniall_, It can but not will be enabled by default20:10
niall_Yorvyk, do I need to recompile the kernel or what do I need to change?20:10
Yorvykniall_, you don't need to compile a new kernel thankfully20:11
YorvykI'm just trying to find what I did as it was a year or so back - give me a few mins.20:12
niall_Yorvyk, thank you very much. :)20:18
Yorvykniall_, np, I'm trying to tidy up my hard disk and have files scattered all over at the moment. I know it's here somewhere20:20
Yorvykniall_, found it http://www.linux.org/docs/ldp/howto/Serial-HOWTO-16.html#ss16.320:23
niall_Yorvyk, just the information I needed. BAM! Thank you so much. Just curious, for what purpose do you employ 6 serial ports?20:36
niall_(or however many you are using.. I need 6 to console to Cisco devices)20:38
Yorvykniall_, 10 in the end :) It was a machine monitoring various environmental controls in a workshop20:38
niall_Yorvyk, nice. Good to know there's capacity to expand in future.20:39
Yorvykniall_, it had 14 ports 4 were never used, just there in case.20:40
niall_:)20:41
Yorvykniall_, I don't know what you're going to do but after the problem with only 4 ports enable our biggest headache was identifying which port was which.20:43
YorvykThe i/o cards were covered in links that had to set properly with rather poor docs.20:45
niall_Hmm. Well, so long as the ordering stays the same after reboot it won't be much of a problem for me. Did you discover that they did or didn't retain their order?20:46
Yorvykinitially they didn't. we had to alter the addresses and also I seem to remember moving them about the PCI slots because of some interrupt conflict.  Once it was all set it has run for 16 months now with out problem and is switched off when the place shuts for holidays.20:49
niall_Yorvyk, how do you mean, 'alter the addresses'?20:52
Yorvykniall_, I think it was the address that was altered by some links on the board in order to avoid conflicts with other devices.  These were rather old and not plug n play.21:03
niall_Yorvyk, oh I see. I was fortunate enough to find a single PCI card with 6 ports, PnP, 20GBP.21:09
Yorvykniall_, Not bad. Does the MOBO have any serial ports21:10
YorvykIf it does and you don't need it, disabling it can help if you find you have problems with them 'moving about'21:11
niall_Yorvyk, I believe there is on onboard but I'm not sure I have the header and plate; I don't intend to use it. Good call. Thanks for blazing the trail ;)21:25
Yorvykniall_, np, and good luck with it.21:29
niall_Thanks. bbl21:35

jacobwquick question, how to make ubuntu usb from fedora w/o unetbootin?22:20
jonsaintil have to buy something bigger22:20
directhexembedded devices are nigh on impossible to change the OS on. at best, a few of them you can dual-boot, but i doubt this is one22:20
jacobwit is annoying when people buy gifts etc that aren't linux compatible and its like its nice of them and stuff but not helpful to you personally22:21
directhexit's not windows compatible either. it's old old, discontinued embedded os wince22:21
jonsaintthis ce is utter rubbish. i wouldnt buy it for my worst enemy!22:21
directhexwince is pretty much a different, independent os compared to windows, but with a low-spec clone of the win9x ui22:22
jonsaintis it easy to wipe ce off these machines then? and would wine work on there?22:23
popeyno22:23
directhexno, it's impossible22:23
directhexand no, wine cannot work22:23
jonsaintfor which bit?22:23
popeyhonestly, give up22:23
jonsaintok lol22:23
directhexwine cannot work because it translated calls to the Win32 API into Linux calls - and your ARM processor can't do Win3222:24
directhexand you won't get any OS with wine on it installed, since the WinCE OS is burned into a chip22:24
Yorvykjonsaint, google Archos Arnova Linux and you'll see lots of other desperate people :)22:25
jonsaintwell folks i would like to thank you all for all the help you have given me the last few years and yet again at this time of year i would like to pass on my best wishes to you all and hope everyone has a lucky new year.22:25
