tanders12anyone wanna help a noob get jack working?03:42
ailotanders12: what do you need?03:47
tanders12trying to get FFADO and JACK running for the first time03:50
tanders12jack fails to start when set to "firewire"03:50
ailoWhat soundcard do you use?03:51
tanders12Echo Audiofire 403:51
ailoHave you got it working on the same machine but with different OS?03:52
tanders12I'm sure it's something super simple. Like I said, total noob03:52
tanders12No I haven't tried that yet03:54
ailoSadly, I don't have any experience with firewire cards myself, so I can only help so much..03:54
ailowhich version of Ubuntu?03:56
tanders1210.1003:56
tanders12i could post the jack error messages03:57
tanders1220:52:02.694 /usr/bin/jackd -t2000 -dfirewire -r44100 -p128 -n3 20:52:02.697 JACK was started with PID=4002. no message buffer overruns no message buffer overruns jackdmp 1.9.6 Copyright 2001-2005 Paul Davis and others. Copyright 2004-2010 Grame. jackdmp comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY This is free software, and you are welcome to redistribute it under certain conditions; see the file COPYING for details JACK server starti03:57
tanders12Well that was useless...03:57
ailodid you get jack to start with another card?03:58
ailousing alsa, that is03:58
ailobut, reading the message you pasted, there doesn't seem to be any error. Am I wrong?03:59
tanders12Yeah it seems to start with alsa04:01
tanders12It clipped my message that's why it didn't post the error04:01
ailook04:01
tanders12btw is there any way to keep jack from repeatedly trying to connect. The error keeps popping up and it's very annoying04:01
tanders12  (ffado.cpp)[  92] ffado_streaming_init: libffado 2.999.0- built Aug 11 2010 00:12:04 firewire ERR: FFADO: Error creating virtual device Cannot attach audio driver JackServer::Open() failed with -1 no message buffer overruns Failed to start server04:02
ailoHave you tried this on Ubuntu 10.04? You could try installing jackd1. Do: sudo apt-get install jackd1. This will replace jackd204:07
ailoOr just look up jackd1 in synaptic manager, check it and apply.04:07
tanders12Haven't tried it in 10.04. What's the difference between jackd1 and jackd2?04:07
ailoI don't know all the specifics, but jackd2 supports multiple cpu's. There may not be any benefit to use jackd2, so jackd1 should be fine.04:08
ailoAlso, there may be a problem with your version of ffado, but to find out if that is true I would contact the people over at ffado.04:10
tanders12k I think I'll try it in windows first. I bought the interface used so that's prolly a good place to start. thanks for your help tho04:11
ailook, good luck.04:14
ScottLtanders12, are you starting jack by the command line?  you might also try qjackctl04:23
ScottLyou can also look at messages from qjackctl via the messages button and see all output04:23
ScottLbut you might also configure it and choose "verbose messages"04:23
tanders12scott i am using qjackctl04:27
tanders12is there an easy way for me to post the error messages here?04:27
ailoAnother thing that might be worth trying is increase the Frame/Period to at least 1024.04:28
tanders12Tried that, still no go. I've confirmed that JACK seems to work great through ALSA. Tried routing an mp3 from Audacious to Audacity. Worked flawlessly. Very slick. I'm really thinking this is an FFADO issue, possibly having to do with the new Juju firewire stack04:31
ailoI read something about that Juju... A guy testing Ubuntu 11.04 uses the same device seemingly without problems04:34
ailotanders12 A simple solution could be to use an older distro.04:36
tanders12I really prefer to use the newest stuff if possible. I'll get it eventually. I'm a tweak by nature, I enjoy fixing things that are broke and being on the bleeding edge :)04:37
holsteintanders12: you still around?04:37
holsteindid you get it running?04:37
tanders12nope04:37
holsteinlemme look at the ffado comatibility list04:37
holsteinAH04:38
holsteinsays your good04:38
holsteintanders12: open a terminal04:38
holsteinand run04:38
holsteinsudo qjackctl04:38

holsteinperiods/buffer 304:39
holsteinmake sure you have firewire as the driver04:39
holsteinnot freebob (for now)04:39
holsteintanders12: and try starting it04:39
OldBlueSome reason, kicked me to alternative ID04:39
holsteinOldBlue: o?04:40
holsteino/04:40
holstein*04:40
holsteinhello :)04:40
holsteinOldBlue: what client are you trying?04:40
OldBlueholstein> mIRC04:41
tanders12ok it started that time04:41
holsteintanders12: cool04:41
holsteinso close it04:41
holsteinand lets go back to the terminal04:41
tanders12k04:41
holsteinand do a couple things04:41
holsteincheck and make sure you are in the audio and video group04:41
holsteinsudo adduser tanders12 audio04:41
holsteinand sudo adduser tanders12 video04:42
tanders12done04:42
holsteini guess you could to sudo adduser tanders12 audio && adduser video04:42
tanders12was alread in audio04:42
tanders12added to video04:42
holsteinsomething like that04:42
holsteinOK04:42
holsteinlemme get another link for you...04:42
holsteinhttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/Firewire04:43
holsteinabout half way down the page04:43
holsteinUbuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) and 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat)04:43
holstein^^ after that heading04:43
tanders12read that about half an hour ago04:43
holsteinecho 'KERNEL=="raw1394", GROUP="video", MODE="0664"' |04:43
holsteinsudo tee /etc/udev/rules.d/50-raw1394.rules04:43
holstein&& sudo restart udev04:43
tanders12one sec04:44
OldBlueholstein> got my Vista box going again.  there's 4 days I'll never get bck!  :)04:44
holsteinand you may need to logout and back in04:44
holsteini usually just restart to be sure ;)04:44
holsteinOldBlue: OH the vista restore discs did the trick eh?04:44
holsteinthats cool04:44
holsteini torrented those04:44
OldBlueholstein> I'll be embarrassed to tell people what I did on my holiday.  Maybe I'll just say, "I spent a  lot of time in India!"04:45
holsteini dont have any restore or repair discs for vista or win704:45
holsteinseems like those are nice ad legal helpful tools to have around04:45
holsteinfor family members that have vista and win704:45
OldBlueholstein> you do now.  What the heck is the irc command to get my normal ID back? "/" what04:46
* holstein crosses fingers for tanders1 :)04:46
holsteintry it now04:46
holsteinas normal user04:46
holsteinwith those settings04:46
tanders1k here we go04:46
holsteinif it starts as root04:46
holsteinthen you know you *can* make it work04:46
holsteinits usually permissions04:46
OldBlueholstein> Now I'm old school.  Been using computer a long time.  Never had a modern hard drive go out on me before.04:46
holsteinthats how i get my firepod to 'give up the funk'04:46
ailoso, the firewire stuff need to belong to the Video group?04:47
holsteinOldBlue: hehe04:47
OldBlueholstein> they die quietly and partially  :)04:47
holsteinive had plenty die04:47
holsteinailo: i was told that had changed04:47
holsteinbut i'll believe it when it runs for me04:47
holsteinwithout adding myself to that group04:48
OldBlueholstein> My daughter says, "Dad, will we need to freeze this one to get the files off?"  Ever do that trick?04:48
holsteinhehe04:48
holsteinhasnt worked for me04:48
OldBlueholstein> It works!04:48
holsteinbut the cases i have that are totally dead are quite extreme04:48
OldBlueholstein> It worked like a charm on a failing scsi drive in my kids' iMac04:48
holsteinnice04:49
holsteini got a couple here that i havent tried that on04:49
OldBlueholstein> But yea, I have it fully functioning04:49
holsteinive already used photorec and give the data back04:49
holsteinbut, maybe i'll try it again04:49
OldBlueholstein> was on my way to Best Buy to get W7 and a new hard drive when it struck me my 500GB in this old HP was two 250GB identical hard drives.04:50
tanders12@holstein: no go04:50
holsteintanders12: OK04:50
holsteintry sudo qjackctl again04:51
OldBlueholstein> so I flipped car around, made slave drive the master and it restored like a charm in like 18 minutes04:51
holsteinand when that works04:51
holsteingo back to normal user04:51
holsteinrun it04:51
holsteinand pastebin us the errors...04:51
tanders12you know what, i didn't reboot. lemme try that first04:51
tanders12brb04:52
tanders12back, still no worky, which logs did you want?04:55
holsteinmake sure it still works as root first04:55
holsteinthen whatever errors are in the 'message' window of JACK for now04:55
holsteinmessages*04:56
ailoholstein: I'm thinking more about permissions. The reason why we need them for audio is because of RT, right? I'm wondering what is the best group for firewire, and who is setting this up for us.04:56
* holstein shrugs04:56
holsteini guess its just always been video04:56
holsteinfor cameras or whatever04:57
holsteinand i can totally understand the lock-down out of the box04:57
holsteintanders12: is this 10.10?04:58
holsteini havnet tried with 10.10 yet04:58
holsteinand i can...04:58
tanders12didn't work as root04:58
holsteinif thats helpful04:58
holsteintanders12: double check the settings then04:59
tanders12it's 10.1004:59
holsteinwe need to get it running as root04:59
holsteinthen, what we just did *should* hook it up04:59
holsteinlemme go and try it too04:59
=== OldBlue is now known as Fezzler
tanders12seems to be havin some pretty serious issues now05:00
tanders122:01:21.010 Could not connect to JACK server as client. - Overall operation failed. - Server communication error. Please check the messages window for more info.05:02
ailoTry alsa05:02
tanders12firewire ERR: Could not start streaming threads05:02
tanders12ALSAs broke too05:03
holsteininteresting... im about online here05:03
holsteinlet me do those commands and see what happens for me05:04
tanders12you have an audiofire 4?05:04
tanders12what are those commands supposed to do?05:04
holsteinpresonus firepod05:04
holsteintanders12: fix permissions for firewire devices05:04
tanders12k05:05
ailotanders12: I think what they were supposed to do is give permissions to let your firewire device run in realtime mode05:05
tanders12what's the chance that the juju stack is causing the problem?05:07
ailoConsidering that you got it working once as root, it should be tweakable05:07
tanders12true enough05:07
tanders12but then we didn't confirm whether the interface actually worked...05:08
holsteinffado says it does05:08
holsteini think you'll be ok once you get it running05:08
tanders12k, how's it coming on your end?05:08
tanders12btw if it makes a difference I'm on straight ubuntu, not ubuntustudio05:09
holsteintanders12: you are not alone05:11
holsteinim getting the same issues in 10.1005:11
holsteinlet me see what i find here..05:11
tanders12well that's "good"05:11
tanders12lol05:11
holsteinive been meaning to try it for a while now05:11
ailostrange that alsa would break too05:11
tanders12ailo: yeah05:11
tanders12i lost those commands when I rebooted. could you repost them and I'll see if I can figure anything out?05:12
holsteinyou can run05:12
holsteinhistory05:12
holsteinin the terminal05:12
holsteinbut05:13
holsteinhttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/Firewire05:13
holsteinthats where i got them...05:13
holsteintanders12: you dont have anything else plugged in do you?05:14
holsteinfirewire?05:14
tanders12nope05:14
holsteini think the multiple device support is on the way05:14
tanders12is there a command to at least find out if the pc sees the interface?05:15
tanders12lsfw or something like that?05:15
holsteinOK05:15
holsteinim up as root05:15
holsteinlemme try normal user05:15
holsteinnope05:15
tanders12k05:15
holsteini went all grey05:15
holsteinater a few seconds..05:15
tanders12that's what happens when i try it too05:15
tanders12freezes on a system level05:16
holsteinyup05:16
holsteinthats why im still running 10.04 ;)05:16
tanders12lame05:16
holsteinhmmm05:16
ailoThis whole setup seems like a hack, anyway, right?05:16
holsteinwell, theres not many firewire users05:17
tanders12nope05:17
holsteinand the ffado guys are busy05:17
holsteini used to hang in there05:17
holsteinthey dont use buntu though05:17
holsteinand the channel is dead05:17
tanders12yeah it is05:17
holsteinthe mailing list is active05:17
tanders12mailing list is the only way to go05:17
holsteinwhen i got someone in a channel, the advice was 'dont use ubuntu'05:18
holstein;)05:18
tanders12lol05:18
holsteinand that just aint right05:18
tanders12my goal is arch eventually05:18
holsteini remember something in the kernel breaking firewire in 11.0405:19
holsteinmaybe that worked its way up to this05:19
holsteinhmmm05:19
tanders1210.04 doesn't use juju right?05:19
holsteintanders12: i'll try a different kernel05:19
holsteinbut it'll take a while to test05:20
holsteini have to reboot twice to let the 10.04 install set up grub05:20
tanders12k im gonna try the interface in windoze and make sure it at least works05:20
ailoholstein: did you try it on 11.04. A tester on the Ubuntustudio-dev list had it working.05:20
holsteinailo: what kernel?05:20
ailoalessios lowlatency05:21
holsteineh, i dont have jack in my natty install05:21
holsteinand it was kind strange the last time i was in there...05:21
holsteinlet me try with 10.10 for now...05:21
tanders12lol chrome wont let me go to echoaudio.com now05:22
holsteinwhen it rains, right...05:23
tanders12eh it'll work itself out05:23
tanders12brb05:23
holsteinailo: you have a firewire interface?05:26
holsteini feel like we almost need a team for this05:26
ailonope, but I'm thinking of getting one.05:26
holsteinjust to make sure it still works05:26
holsteineach release05:26
ailoAfter reading about the debate surrounding RT and how Ubuntu Natty is breaking it, makes me think Linux needs someone that works these things out for the audio community05:27
holsteinyup05:28
holsteina paid dev just for the studio side05:28
ailoAll these audio distros based on Ubuntu for instane. Why not put heads together on the fundamental stuff. At least on the kernel side of things.05:32
holsteini think falk is trying to do that05:32
holsteinfalk and abogani05:32
tanders12ha echos site is hosed right now, so no windows test05:37
tanders12holstein: any luck?05:37
ailoholstein: ever tried linking multiple firewire devices, chained?05:37
holsteinailo: not yet05:38
holsteinwell, i tried a hard drive and the firepod05:38
holsteinit used to work with the old freebob driver05:38
holsteinnot anymore05:38
holsteinBUT its suppose to be coming05:38
holsteintanders12: not yet :/05:38
tanders12k05:38
holsteintanders12: now its not working in 10.0405:39
holsteinon this box05:39
holsteinSO let me sort that out05:39
holsteini really dont use this laptop that much05:39
tanders12lol05:39
tanders12fun05:39
holsteinhehe05:39
holsteintanders12: ive been wanting to do this05:39
tanders12glad I could help ;)05:39
holsteini knew it would come up eventually05:39
tanders12btw what kind of music you do?05:39
holsteinmostly jazz05:40
holsteinupright bass05:40
ailoI was investigating linking (and syncing) of multiple devices. Because of no assurance from anywhere at the time, my thought was to get a ADAT capable device + an A/D ADAT converter.05:40
* holstein wipes brow05:40
holsteinOK05:40
holsteinim up and running in 10.1005:40
holsteinand im up to date with falks packages in his PA05:40
holsteinPPA*05:41
holsteinso i have JACK205:41
holsteinand other goodies that could break maverick..05:41
holsteinlemme reboot05:41
holsteinnot that i care much05:42
holsteinbut aboganis kernel breaks my wireless05:42
holsteini'll have to tell me05:42
holsteinhim*05:42
holsteinOK05:43
holsteinthe new kernel from abogani doesnt* break my wireless :)05:43
tanders12who's abogani?05:43
ailotanders12: he maintains low latency kernels for Ubuntu05:44
holsteinhttps://launchpad.net/~abogani/+archive/ppa05:44
holstein^^ thats his PPA05:45
holsteintanders12: OK05:45
holsteinim up and looking pretty normal05:46
tanders12what's the diff between low latency and rt?05:46
holsteinthis is what i did05:46
holsteinhttp://jackschnippes.freeunix.net/index.php/2010/11/04/lowlatency-kernel-and-realtime-kernel-for-ubuntu-10-10-maverick05:46
holsteinborrowing the natty kernels for maverick05:46
holsteinhey05:47
ailoabout kernels https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RealTime05:47
holstein5.8 ms05:47
holsteinlemme see..05:47
holsteinyeah, its starts at 1.45 ms05:47
holsteindoesnt seem as stable as in 10.0405:48
holsteinbut, its working05:48
holsteinactually05:48
holsteini dont know how hard i can push it on this machine05:48
ailoWell, maybe Maverick is not to be recommended for firewire than?05:48
holsteinso that could be just as stable as 10.0405:48
tanders12so based on what you had to do to get it working what do you think the problem was?05:48
holsteintanders12: the permissions and the kernel too05:49
holsteini say05:49
holsteini went ahead and installed the realtime one05:49
holsteinyou can try the -lowlatency one first if you want05:49
holsteintanders12: i usually go in and edit my grub file05:49
tanders12never installed a kernel b4 :D05:50
holsteinso grub shows on boot05:50
holsteinthe grub menu*05:50
holsteini dont use the RT kernel all the time on the laptops05:50
holsteintanders12: no biggie05:50
tanders12im game tho05:50
tanders12gotta happen eventually05:50
holsteinyou see that link?05:50
holsteinhttp://jackschnippes.freeunix.net/index.php/2010/11/04/lowlatency-kernel-and-realtime-kernel-for-ubuntu-10-10-maverick05:50
holsteintheres a section for realtime05:50
holsteinand there are 3 things05:50
holsteinone for 32bit05:50
holsteinand one for 64bit05:50
holsteinjust DL all those05:51
holsteintanders12: used to be easy :)05:51
holsteinsudo apt-get install linux-rt .... BUT we're going to have to steal them from natty this way05:51
holsteinand thats fin05:51
holsteine05:52
holsteinafter you get those 3 files DL'd05:52
holsteinjust go and doulbe click on them05:52
holsteinif you see a 'unsatified dependancies' warning05:54
holsteinjust go to another one05:54
holsteinand come back to that one05:54
holsteini installed the 64bit one05:54
holsteinand one of the packages didnt install05:54
holsteinand its fine...05:54
tanders12so maverick doesn't have rt kernel in repos anymore?05:57
ailonever had05:58
holsteinyeah05:58
holsteinlucid really didnt05:58
holsteinthey just carried the one up from karmic05:58
holsteinnatty wont either05:58
holsteinwe'll have to get it from this PPA05:58
tanders12hm why not?05:58
holsteinthe generic kernel is really getting there05:59
holsteinas far as realtime capabilities05:59
holstein*im told05:59
tanders12hm05:59
holsteinnot so much for us though05:59
holsteinthe firewire gear05:59
tanders12why won't it work for our firewire problems you think?05:59
ailoMy favorite so far was Karmic, but I used the distro Puredyne, so I don't know of UbuntuStudio specific issues.05:59
holsteintanders12: SO if you want06:00
holsteinrun06:00
tanders12won't let me install one of the headers packages due to deps06:00
holsteintanders12: thats fine06:00
holsteinjust get the other 206:00
tanders12i did06:00
holsteinthats how mine went too06:00
holsteinOK06:01
tanders12ah ok06:01
tanders12how do i pull up grub again?06:01
holsteinIF you want to see the grub list06:01
holsteinrun06:01
holsteinsudo nano /etc/default/grub06:01
holsteinOR gksudo gedit ...06:01
holsteinwhichever you prefer06:01
holsteinthere are 2 lines i change06:02
holsteini do06:02
holstein#GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=006:02
holsteinso i see the list06:02
holsteinand06:02
holsteinGRUB_TIMEOUT=-106:02
tanders12i use burg btw06:02
holsteinso it doesnt automatically do anything06:02
tanders12it's a graphical grub launcher06:02
holsteinAH06:03
holsteinok :)06:03
holsteinso your cool then06:03
tanders12yean06:04
holsteinmaybe you need to run06:04
holsteinsudo update-grub06:04
holsteini dont know how burge works06:04
holsteinand i needed to force it06:04
holsteinsince my grub is handled by a different instance of buntu06:04
tanders12k06:04
tanders12should i try to boot the rt now?06:08
holsteintanders12: yup06:09
holsteingo for it06:09
holsteinthats all i did06:09
tanders12one question06:09
holstein?06:09
tanders12burg lists rt kernel and 3 other kernels06:10
tanders12shouldn't there only be 1 other06:10
holsteindepends06:10
holsteinassuming they are not the 'recovery' kernels06:10
holsteincould just be older kernels06:10
tanders12does ubuntu hang onto old ones as they are updated06:10
holsteinthat you've updated06:10
tanders12^^06:10
holsteini usually keep the RT one06:10
holsteinthe new generic one06:11
holsteinand the last generic one that worked06:11
tanders12makes sense06:11
tanders12brb06:11
tanders12its only pulling up 2 entries06:15
tanders12in grub06:15
holsteinno RT ?06:15
holsteinhmmm06:15
tanders12no06:15
tanders12might be a burg problem06:15
holsteinyou did06:15
holsteinsudo update-grub ?06:15
holsteinmaybe theres an update-burg ;)06:16
holsteinburg is news to me06:16
tanders12yeah, the burg configuration tool can see all the kernels, but when it actually boots it only displays windows and one ubuntu06:16
tanders12but there's no setting for that...06:16
tanders12is there a grub file I can edit to make sure they are listed?06:16
holsteindrop that burg conf in ubuntu paste if you want06:16
holsteintanders12: if you run update-grub06:17
tanders12ubuntu paste?06:17
holsteinyou can see them get recognized06:17
holsteinhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/06:17
holsteinor pastebin06:17
holsteinwhatever you prefer06:17
tanders12uninstalling burg...06:17
holsteinhehe ;)06:17
ailoabout burg (new to me also): https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Burg06:17
holsteini'll give you my /etc/default/grub changes again06:18
holstein#GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=006:18
holsteinGRUB_TIMEOUT=-106:18
holsteinand you run update-grub after editing that file06:19
tanders12rebooting....06:20
holsteinhey, burg looks neat :)06:20
tanders1wireless issues with rt06:29
holsteinyeah, it happens06:29
tanders1it said i was connected to the network but no interwebs06:29
holsteinyou can email the -dev list though about that06:30
tanders1whats the cause you know?06:30
holsteinnah06:30
tanders1k06:30
holsteinand i dont use it anyways06:30
holsteinwe really shouldnt06:30
holsteinin theory06:30
tanders1the dev list or the kernel?06:30
tanders1lol06:30
holsteini guess with a modern system it doesnt matter so much anymore06:31
holsteinused to be, turn off compiz06:31
holsteindisable the network06:31
holsteinstart JACK06:31
holsteinmake some music ;)06:31
tanders1that would be nice06:31
holsteinanyways, is it working in RT ?06:31
tanders1funny story06:31
tanders1i forgot to check06:31
holsteinlol06:32
tanders1really wishing i had an ssd with all this rebooting06:32
holsteineh06:32
holsteini got one06:32
holsteina cheapy one06:32
holsteinin my EEE06:32
holsteini wouldnt sweat it too much06:32
tanders1is it stock?06:32
tanders1cuz the stock ones in EEEs are crap06:32
holsteinyup06:32
holsteinand the "bad" stock one06:33
tanders1you can get 10s boots with vertex 2s06:33
holsteinthe 16GB 90006:33
tanders1anyways, back in 506:33
holstein:)06:33
ailoholstein: Why are they bad? Performance? Just read about life expectancy. Doesn't seem to be all that determined.06:34
holsteini think the one i have is slower06:35
holsteinand has much less write cycles06:35
holsteinits still working though06:35
ailoI also got one. Slower, yes, but so is everything else on that machine.06:35
holsteinnot bad06:35
holsteinjust not faster than a spinning one06:35
holsteinailo: did you say you have a 901?06:36
ailoYes06:36
ailoMy keyboard has failed. Thinking about what was written on the user list just now.06:37
ailoThey get pretty hot, these little things.06:37
holstein:/06:37
holsteinthats sux06:37
holsteinim waiting on this hard drive to fail06:38
holsteinim going to boot an external USB drive06:38
holsteinand make a server box :)06:38
holsteinsomething fun06:38
ailoI had to open and remove the internal battery in order to get default bios settings so I could use an external keyboard to get into bios settings.06:39
holsteindrag06:39
holsteinive had good luck with mine so far06:39
holsteini dumped coffee in it last christmas06:39
ailoLuckily there was a setting to do slow boot, so the machine picks up the keyboard before it's too late to get into bios settings.06:39
holsteinhad to take the keyboard out and clean it a bit06:39
holsteinbut it recovered06:40
ailook06:40
holsteini was *so upset about it last year06:40
holsteinthis is my daily rig really06:40
ailoI heard that flash drives can be read even after they fail to write. Hopefully this also applies to ssd.06:42
holsteini dont keep anything on here im worried about losing06:42
ailoI'm doing a mirror system, so that all machines share data. Everything is backed up at least twice.06:43
holsteinrsync?06:43
holsteini need to get something like that going on06:44
holsteinon my studio box06:44
ailoI would use it over the internet if it weren't for bandwidth limitation06:44
ailoInstead I use a hardrive06:44
ailoBut the same system06:44
holsteinright now i just move important projects that i need backed up manually06:44
ailounison for syncing06:44
holsteinand use dropbox for important things i need to get to daily06:44
holsteini have a G3 mac im going to make into a file server eventually06:45
ailoI used to use dropbox for small files. Now, I've got Sparkleshare going.06:45
holsteinAH06:45
ailoSeems to work fine. Wasn't that hard to set up, actually06:45
holsteini read about sparkleshare06:45
holsteinailo: how does it rate with dropbox?06:46
holsteini like the idea of running my own server for it06:47
ailoThe actual syncing seems up to par. No limitations. You can use it on your own server.06:47
tanders12im havin all kinds of fun06:47
holsteintanders12: ;)06:47
holsteinwhats the good news?06:47
tanders12jack crashed and wont start up06:47
tanders12any way to restart it without rebooting06:47
holsteinhmmmm06:47
tanders12btw the good news is the wireless is working now06:47
holsteinsudo killall jackd06:47
holsteinthat usually works for me06:48
tanders12and jacks starting with root06:48
holsteintanders12: if its starting with root06:48
holsteinand running06:48
holsteinthen you can assume that you *will* get it running06:48
holsteinwe just have to sort out whats going on with that06:48
holsteinthat is literally all i did though06:48
holsteinthe audio video group06:48
holsteinthat link with the udev stuff06:49
holsteinand the RT kernel06:49
holsteinbut, all hardware is different06:49
ailoholstein: if you try Sparkleshare and run into trouble, just let me know06:50
ailodon't think all that many are doing it yet...06:50
holsteinailo: i dont need X right?06:51
ailoX?06:51
holsteinfor the server06:51
holsteini can run sparkle on my actual server istall?06:51
holsteininstall*06:51
ailoAll you need is git on the server06:51
holsteinCOOL06:51
ailoSparkleshare doesn't have an automatic way to set up the server yet, but essentially what you do is: you clone your git repo into the Sparkleshare folder, than turn Sparkleshare on, and there you have it.06:53
holsteini might be able to handle that06:55
holsteinsounds like a fun rainy day project06:56
ailoHard to know if it is reliable though. Haven't done too much testing myself yet. I have an account at Github and a repo on my own server, but they are pretty inactive. From what I've read Sparklesharemay is being rewritten. Using a lot of C# right now.06:57
holsteinim alright with a little glith here and there06:59
holsteinwell, id like to hang and get tanders sorted07:00
holsteinbut i gotta crash...07:00
holsteingn ailo07:00
ailogn07:00
TANDERS122 THIS IRC CLIENT FOR ANDROID IS RETARDED07:02
TANDERS122FORCING ALL CAPS07:02
ailoTANDERS122: How goes it?07:03
TANDERS122NOT SO GOOD07:03
TANDERS122ok07:05
TANDERS122thats better07:05
TANDERS122so apparently root can see my interface but none of my software07:05
ailoWhat do you mean?07:06
ailoSo, you tried jack as root, and it worked?07:06
TANDERS122the readable/writable clients shows "firewire_pcm" but not audacity, audacious, etc07:07
TANDERS122well it starts up as root07:07
ailoThe connections stuff is another deal. Once you fired up jack, it should work. Audacity works a little weird with jack07:08
ailoFor me, audacity only shows when I start playback.07:09
TANDERS122all im trying to do is pump some sound out the heaphone jack on my interface07:09
ailoTANDERS12: So, were you able to run jack as normal user?07:11
TANDERS12nope07:11
ailoholstein had to leave us, but perhaps you've got the leads on how to proceed?07:12
TANDERS12not really07:12
TANDERS12but ive learned some stuff07:13
ailoI suspect all you need is A: the right kernel B: permissions set right07:13
TANDERS12doesnt make any sens what the kernel has to do with it07:14
TANDERS12i mean asside from the obvious07:15
TANDERS12lol working in non rt again now07:16
ailofound this: https://ieee1394.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Juju_Migration07:19
tanders121could you repost that link?07:25
ailohttps://ieee1394.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Juju_Migration07:25
ailoIf I were you I would either try getting natty kernels to work, or revert to an older distro.07:28
tanders121k so it's working as root07:32
tanders121it'll play sound out my interface07:32
tanders121thanks for the link07:33
tanders121thats one of the ones i went through earlier07:33
ailoAs long as you can do stuff as root it's just a matter of setting permissions.07:33
tanders121definitely close though07:33
tanders121yep07:33
tanders121i wonder what permissions though07:33
ailoThere's some info on that page about that.07:34
ailoPermissions and ownership for /dev/fw*07:34
tanders121k07:34
tanders121well thats where ill start tomorrow07:34
tanders121thanks for your help man07:34
ailogood luck07:34
tanders121:)07:35
tanders121and holstein I see your still logged in so if you see this when you get back thanks a ton. I'm a few steps closer and I know how to install kernels now :D07:35
tanders121k cya ailo07:35
