[04:49] morning superfly inetpro nuvolari and everyone else [07:45] Kilos: good morning [07:46] Kilos: are you surviving on this last day of 2010? [07:57] lo pro [07:57] eish [07:57] lo inetpro [07:59] lol. just. Debs and I met tonight 25 years ago [07:59] but i be fighting my 80g drive the mbr is corrupt or gone? === smorar___ is now known as smorar__ === smorar__ is now known as smorar___ === smorar___ is now known as smorar____ === smorar____ is now known as smorar___ === mrs_fly_ is now known as mrs_fly [11:35] anyone here can help me to install .tar or .rpm files please [11:35] i found a way to rewrite my mbr but cant find the files with cli so i can install them [11:36] or repair [11:36] i have them in downloads and on desktop but cant get sudo to find them [11:37] this is the command i used [11:37] sudo alien package_file.rpm [11:38] sudo alien seatoolsenterprise.i386.rpm [11:38] what did i leavge out [11:38] leave [11:39] Kilos: firstly, why are you trying to install .tar or .rpm files? [11:39] because that sight doesnt have them in .deb superfly [11:39] site [11:39] Kilos: which site is that? [11:39] sec i find it [11:40] http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-GB&name=SeaTools:_Enterprise_Edition&vgnextoid=58d500bc350ce010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD [11:40] whew thats a long one hey === smorar___ is now known as smorar____ [11:42] why do you need that? [11:42] my harddrives mbr has crashed [11:43] so what does that tool have to do with it? [11:49] it is supposed to be able to repair or reinstall mbr [11:50] how on earth did you break an mbr? [11:50] sorry i took so long i dont have any indicators working here on 9.04 [11:50] Tonberry, not me [11:50] did it all on its own [11:51] but googling finds lotsa peeps had same probs [11:51] and now grub won't start? [11:51] yip [11:52] been trying for 4 days now [11:52] or more. i forget [11:53] https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RecoveringUbuntuAfterInstallingWindows [11:54] https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RPM/AlienHowto [11:54] try that method for installing a grub mbr [11:54] i will look . this is what i found but i dunno where to find the files [11:54] ok ty will do that now. see ya all later [11:55] hold thumbs for me please [11:55] a random seagate tool is very unlikely to be able to fix grub... [11:55] that was part of the boast [11:55] Kilos: don't use random tools, use the Ubuntu tools [11:56] ok will do [11:57] Kilos: if your horse is sick, are you going to get a doctor or a vet to look at him? [11:57] hehe [11:58] i be the vet [11:58] Kilos: right, so the same with your boot sector, are you going to get some Seagate tool to fix grub, or are you going to get grub to fix itself? [11:59] i have google lots superfly and some of the info was from ubuntu but it didnt work here because i make mistakes in cli i suppose [12:00] its the mbr not grub [12:00] cant boot with anything ebvn dos stiffies [12:00] even [12:01] and i didnt have windows near here before the crash [12:01] was just starting to enjoy maverick [12:01] Kilos: the MBR is the Master Boot Record, which lives in the first sector of your hard drive. if you can't boot with a stiffy, that's not your MBR [12:01] oh sorry i can boot from them but not install dos even [12:02] can you boot of an Ubuntu CD? [12:02] are you certain the entire drive is not dead? [12:02] *off [12:02] Tonberry: yeah, that's what I suspect... the MBR doesn't die by itself, it's either all or nothing [12:03] or very very very very random kernel bug.... [12:12] half the time it doesnt boot from the ubuntu cds [12:12] says ubi.partman [12:12] um [12:12] cant find ubi.partman [12:13] it has actually installed twice in the last few days but soon after updating crashed again [12:14] i vote hardware failure [12:14] ubuntu actually gave a report once or twice that mbr was corrupt or missing [12:14] but i will keep trying [12:14] ty for the help guys [12:19] Kilos: your hard drive is dead, you need a new one [12:20] eish [12:20] dont say that superfly its my newest one [12:20] the one i am using now is much older [12:20] could also be the motherboard if booting from a live cd is a problem [12:21] or the dvd/cdrom drive [12:21] cd [12:21] Kilos: when did you get it? [12:22] 3 years ago [12:22] hrm, your warranty has probably already expired [12:22] lol yeah [12:22] maxtor give a 1 year warranty [12:23] ah, I think seagate or one of the others gives a 3 year warranty [12:24] i keep trying guys. be good till im back ok?? [12:24] thanks again for the help [12:59] Happy new year peoples. [20:13] ubuntu cds boot and then there lotsa errors when trying to install [20:13] Coffee's ready for Kilos! [20:15] hard to member but lots [20:15] um [20:15] something with partman [20:16] and lotsa other stuff like gdm not starting etc [20:17] Kilos: in order to solve your problem you need to know the first 5 (at least) error messages [20:18] they flash past so fast i dont get to read them all superfly [20:20] and i dunno how to slow the thing down so i can write them down [20:23] Kilos: I think there's an install log screen in the text-based installer, Ctrl+F10 [20:28] at what stage do you go control +f12 [20:37] Kilos: any time, I think [20:38] ok ty superfly i will try that [22:00] fp [22:00] happy new year to all of you [22:01] fp [22:01] ?
