rhalffhi anyone using an audiofire here ?01:37
rhalffI'm trying to get a audiofire 2 to work01:37
rhalffI think it has the latest firmware, because It automatically updated it when I tried the device in windows01:37
holsteinAH05:21
holsteinhey tanders1205:21
holsteinhappy new year :)05:21
holsteini see you got your rig working05:21
tanders12not yet for me :)05:21
tanders12but same to you05:21
tanders12more or less05:21
holsteinwho knows whats up with that05:21
holsteintanders12: i filed a bug report...05:21
* holstein looking...05:22
tanders12a bug for what exactly?05:22
holsteinhttps://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntustudio/+bug/69589305:22
ubottuUbuntu bug 695893 in Ubuntu Studio "JACK wont start with presonus firepod and generic kernel" [Undecided,New]05:22
tanders12oh05:22
holsteintanders12: maybe you could mark yourself 'affected'05:22
holsteinand add the device you have05:22
tanders12sure thing05:22
holsteini should have left it more vauge now that i think about it...05:23
tanders12right now I'm trying to get ffado-mixer working with af405:23
holsteinAH05:23
holsteini dont need that either05:23
holsteinthe firepod just has knobs05:23
tanders12did you read all the details on how I got mine working?05:23
holsteini skimmed05:24
holsteinlet me look back there...05:24
holsteintanders12: OH05:24
holsteinabout the xruns05:24
holsteintanders12: do you know what firewire chipset you have?05:25
holsteini have several texas instrument chipsets because they work *so* well05:25
holsteinyou can see it running05:25
holsteinlspci05:25
holsteinin a terminal05:25
tanders1208:03.1 FireWire (IEEE 1394): Texas Instruments PCIxx12 OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller05:25
holsteinAH05:25
holsteinsweet :)05:25
holsteinthats the goods05:25
tanders12for sure05:25
holsteintanders12: check in a terminal05:26
tanders12i just happened to have it builtin my vaio. lucked out05:26
holsteincat /proc/interrupts05:26
tanders12 16:         89      85437   IO-APIC-fasteoi   firewire_ohci, yenta, i91505:26
holsteinhmmm05:26
holsteinnot ideal05:26
holsteintanders12: i915 is the graphics?05:27
tanders12what's it mean?05:27
tanders12not sure...05:27
holsteinwell, ideally05:27
holsteinfirewire_ohci05:27
holsteinwould be alone05:27
holsteinsometimes you can set that in the bios05:27
tanders12ah the bus is shared?05:27
tanders12hm that's good to know05:27
holsteinBUT not usually on laptopts05:27
tanders12ill try next time i reboot05:27
tanders12what's yenta?05:28
holsteintheres also some internal linux magic that you can do im told05:28
holsteintanders12: im prettly sure i915 is the intel graphics05:28
holsteinbut yenta05:28
tanders12keep in mind that I didn't put much effort into getting rid of the xruns yet, such as turning off compiz, shutting stuff down, etc05:28
holsteinim going to have to google05:29
holsteinhttp://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=84797105:30
holsteini guess yenta is PCMCIA05:30
tanders12sry05:35
tanders12gnome froze. second time tonight, weird05:35
tanders12i think I might have hosed some stuff with everything I've been installing lately :)05:36
holsteinyeah, i got some issues on my server box too05:40
holsteinrunning sloooow05:40
holsteinhmmm05:42
holsteinmaybe its the internet...05:42
tanders12maybe05:44
tanders12so basically i don't know how I got JACK working, but I think it had to do with this: http://git.debian.org/?p=pkg-multimedia/ffado.git;a=blob_plain;f=debian/60-ffado.rules05:44
tanders12I added that file to /liv/udev/rules.d05:45
tanders12it didn't work right away, but later that night it started working for some reason, on all of my kernels05:45
holsteinhmmm05:46
tanders12**/lib/udev/rules.d05:46
holsteinplausible05:46
holsteinthat would be specific to your hardware too05:46
holsteinright?05:46
tanders12i did a couple other things to thougn so im not sure05:46
tanders12idk05:46
ailo_This is in essence the same thing that you did holstein, right, only this file contains instructions for specific devicew05:46
tanders12https://ieee1394.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Juju_Migration05:46
tanders12hail ailo :)05:46
holsteinailo_: HEY05:47
holsteinyeah, seems similar05:47
ailo_Oh, and Happy New year..05:48
holstein:)05:50
tanders12so i was tellin ailo that i want to make a fresh install and see if I can figure out exactly what made this work05:51
tanders12im curious now05:51
holsteinsounds about right ;)05:51
tanders12how much space does a vanilla ubuntu install take up?05:51
holsteinhmmm05:51
holstein2gb?05:51
holsteinmaybe more05:52
holsteini can fit an install on a 4gb SD card05:52
holsteinactually, i think i fit an ubuntustudio install on a 4gb carg05:52
holsteincard*05:52
tanders12hm that's good. Should be able to make space for a testbed05:55
tanders12Ho08:02
tanders12holstein or ailo you guys around?08:02
tanders12K well when you get back I've confirmed that with a fresh updated install of Maverick with an Audiofire 4 after installing libffado2 followed by jack2 (and letting jack set up real time stuff), and adding user to audio group, it does not work. However, I then added the Debian 60-ffado.rules file to /lib/udev/rules.d, rebooted, and it works.08:11
=== rhalff_ is now known as rhalff

holsteini got the macbook for free17:48
* virtu running on a Celeron(R) 2.80ghz with 1.5GB RAM with a crappy motherboard =(17:52
virtumother´s desktop17:52
holsteini dont know17:53
holsteindepends on what you're doing i suppose17:53
holsteinif your not keeping up with modern games17:54
holsteinor doing a bunch of video editing17:54
holsteinprolly just fine17:54
virtuhere with this desk my mother has some trouble surfing the web with she access a website with some nice images17:54
holsteinmy EEEpc17:55
holstein900mhz17:55
holsteingig of ram17:55
holsteinloads pages and images from the net just fine17:55
virtuso first she needs a new simple one... and me... will save some money... that´s my opinion now... will change my note later this new year17:55
holsteini would say thats a browser, OS, or network issue17:56
ailoI'd say the celeron pc can be used for most things, just need to update your graphic card.17:56
virtuholstein: the big problem here is the onboard video card + bad motherboard performance17:56
virtuailo: you are right...17:56
virtuthe good thing is that my mom said that budget is for 450U$ to spend17:57
virtuso I will change everything17:57
holsteini have to be careful when i go downstairs and not trip on old audio cards ;)17:57
virtumotherboard + proc + video card17:57
holsteinyou can get them for $2 here17:57
holsteinat a charity shop17:57
ailoI bought a new amd X2 for around 250$, excluding a hard drive17:57
ailoIn parts17:57
holsteinagain, that sounds like an OS/driver issue17:58
holsteinvirtu: is it running windows?17:58
virtuailo: in USA all items are very cheap then here in brazil =(17:58
ailoI'm not in US17:58
virtuholstein: yes... windows XP here17:58
virtuailo: sorry17:58
holsteinwell, thats the problem17:58
ailoBut, I'm sure it depends a lot on location17:59
holsteinprobably could re-install windows17:59
holsteincheck some drivers17:59
holsteini installed ubuntu on my moms laptop17:59
holsteinlocked it down a bit17:59
holsteinworks great17:59
holsteinnot totally bullet-proof i suppose17:59
holsteinbut i dont get 'those calls' anymore17:59
virtuholstein: I will do that after I get the new one... this one I will donate to a School near by18:00
holsteininteresting18:00
virtuso I will install ubuntu and check all the hardware... after that will donate it18:00
holsteini got a faster PC as my production rig18:00
holsteinbut just because i found one18:01
holsteinthe one i had til about 6 months ago was slower than that18:01
holstein2.4 with a gig of ram18:01
holsteinworked great18:01
holsteini mean, do what you want18:01
holsteinbut, you dont *need* to upgrade that PC18:02
ailoI agree. For normal use, office/internet, all you need is a descent graphic card for web content. The cheapest new cards can do.18:04
holsteinyeah, a 64mb card would do the job18:04
holsteinOR some integrated GPU18:04
virtutomorrow I will open this gabinet to see waht kind of slot is there available18:05
holsteinfor the sound card?18:05
holsteinyou'll have PCI slots18:05
virtuvideo card18:05
holsteinthat should be AGP18:05
virtuagp or pci18:05
holsteinits of that vintage18:05
holsteinnot PCI express18:05
virtuaham18:05
holsteincould be though18:05
holsteinvirtu: get you an ubuntu live CD18:06
holsteinput it in there18:06
virtupvi express is newer than this desk motherboard18:06
holsteinand check out how it runs18:06
virtugood idea..18:06
holsteinyou could do a WUBI install18:06
holsteinor dual boot18:06
holsteinreally tweak the UI for your mom18:07
holsteinmake it stupid easy and unbreakable18:07
virtuI already have a 64bits iso image here... but it will not load nice on this desk, right?18:07
holsteinhmmm18:07
holsteini think thats a 32bit proc right?18:07
virtuyes...18:08
holsteinyeah18:08
holsteinyou'll need the other iso18:08
virtuwilll download now18:08
virtualso this keyboard sucks =P18:08
ailoholstein: do you know anything about the rtirq-init script? Never paid any attention on how it is installed, or when18:08
holsteinailo: i havent needed to mess with it18:09
holsteini saw it go down once18:09
holsteinsome tweaking18:09
holsteinover in the OSMP channnel18:09
ailoJust read for firewire cards on the new stack you need to change the script.18:09
holsteinhmmm18:09
ailochange a name somewhere18:09
holsteinthis would have been 10.0418:09
holsteinactually, that might have been a debian user18:10
holsteinailo: i need to look at AVlinux again18:10
holsteinseems like there are some tweaks there for firewire18:10
holsteinthat US could use18:10
ailoOk, I think I'll need to read more about it. Don't know if the script is needed with lowlatency, or if it does any good.18:10
holsteinprobably just little things like that18:11
holsteinailo: we are the US firewire dev team18:11
holsteinby the way ;)18:11
holsteinyou and I18:11
ailoholstein: ok, that's fine with me :)18:11
* virtu trying to find a video card with some local friends here18:14

holsteinintegrated intel?18:15
virtulet me see here18:15
holsteinthose are well supported in linux usually18:15
virtuSIS661FX18:15
holsteinAH18:15
holsteinive had bad luck with those in linux18:16
holsteinstill, should be fine with XP18:16
virtuthis motherboard is a crappy =/18:16
virtuall drivers are ok18:16
holsteinwell, XP says they are OK ;)18:16
virtuand when a new line on the chat appears it loads after a second =/18:16
virtucrappy in the meaning of performance... this desk works great at his time =)18:17
holsteinhttp://www.sis.com/support/support_faqs_4.htm18:19
ailovirtu, I had problems with Geforce 3, so I know those are too old. On Windows you'll propably be happy with anything newer than that. Mostly I find the problem is in displaying Flash content.18:20
virtulet me try the univga3 driver from holstein site18:21
virtudidint work =/18:34
holsteinvirtu: no better?18:34
holsteinor didnt work?18:35
holsteinvirtu: are you up to date?18:35
holsteinservice pack 3 or whatever18:35
holsteinwell, anyways, this is getting to be windows support...18:35
virtudidnt work... the setup from driver said that this model isnt compatible with new support =/18:35
holsteini just wanted to say18:35
holsteinget a new computer if you want18:35
holsteinBUT just because you want to18:35
virtu=) I will try save money18:36
holsteinnot because that one aint happenin'18:36
virtutomorrow I will get a video card borrow18:36
holsteini think you're seeing some OS, driver, or network issues18:36
holsteinthat box really should be screamin along with XP and/or any linux18:36
virtulet me restart here18:37
virtubrb18:37
holsteinhey rhalff19:53
holsteinyou got an audiofire?19:54

holsteinalso, you will need to be in the audio and video groups19:56

holsteinpgahlen: whats up?21:04
pgahlen:D21:05
pgahlenok ... i would like to install ubuntu-studio, but i have a problem . one week ago i tried to install ubuntu with the alternate cd and there was no desktop21:06
pgahlenis it the same with the alternate of ubuntu-studio?21:06
holsteinyup21:06
holsteinubuntu = ubuntustudio21:06
pgahlenhm ... ok21:07
holsteinpgahlen: i would get a live CD21:07
holsteinand try some things21:07
pgahlenwhere can i find it?21:07
holsteini think when you first boot in21:07
holsteinyou hi t F621:07
holsteinhit*21:07
holsteinand select nomodeset21:07
holsteinyou'll want the equivalent of 'safe graphics mode'21:07
holsteinsee if that helps21:08
pgahlenok ... but i have to download the alternate?21:08
holsteinhttp://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download21:08
holsteinpgahlen: just get the normal live one21:08
holsteinthere are lots of different kinds of iso images21:08
holstein32bit21:08
pgahlenim running the normal21:08
holstein64bit21:08
holsteinpgahlen: you already have ubuntu installed?21:09
pgahlenyup21:09
holsteinand you dont have a dekstop?21:09
holsteinjust a blank screen?21:09
pgahlenno i have a desktop and i'm work on it but i want to install studio21:09
holsteinOK21:10
holsteinpgahlen: you dont *have* to install ubuntustudio21:10
holsteinubuntustudio is just a collection of packages21:10
holsteinmetapackages21:10
holsteinyou can think of it like kubuntu21:10
holsteinor xubuntu21:10
holsteinthey all use the ubuntu repos21:10
pgahlenubuntu is a collection too -.-21:10
pgahlenyep21:10
holsteinpgahlen: you can just install what software you want21:11
holsteinyou can search synaptic or apt-cache search or whatever21:11
holsteinfor ubuntustudio21:11
holsteinand read about the metapackages21:11
holsteinyou can check out21:11
holstein!vanilla21:11
ubottuTo install Ubuntu Studio on top of a vanilla Ubuntu install, read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuStudio/Installation21:11
holsteinthere are several packages just for the theme-ing21:11
holsteinwhich is great looking, but you may not want to change your current setup21:12
holsteini usually get ubuntustudio-audio and ubuntustudio-audio-plugins21:12
holsteinBUT, if all you want is JACK and ardour21:12
holsteinyou can just install the individual packages you want21:12
pgahlen^^ no i want to install the image-manipulating software21:13
holsteinpgahlen: the gimp?21:13
pgahlenthats too21:13
holsteinyou probably just want ubuntustudio-graphics - Ubuntu Studio graphics Package21:14
holsteinsudo apt-get install ubuntustudio-graphics21:14
holsteinOR you can just search for whatever sofware you're interested in21:14
pgahlen^^ 416 MBs to Download wuuuuhuuuuuuu21:14
holsteinand install it21:14
holsteinpgahlen: right21:15
holsteinits a meta-package21:15
holsteinlots of stuff you might not want21:15
pgahleni only have a 20KB/s WLAN connection ... i will search for the packages ^^21:15
pgahlenok but thanks for your help21:16
holsteinthe alternate installers dont have a 'live mode'21:16
holsteinthat might be what you were encountering before21:16
holsteinubuntustudio uses that alternate style installer21:16
pgahlenbut when it is installed there is a normal gnome desktop?21:17
holsteindepends21:18
holsteinubuntustudio uses gnome21:18
holsteinso in that case21:18
holsteinyeah21:18
holsteinBUT the server isntall for example21:18
holsteinthat would be an alternate installer21:18
holsteinwith no DE21:18
holsteinhttp://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/ubuntustudio-graphics21:18
holstein^^ lists all the packages in the ubuntustudio-graphics metapackage21:18
holsteinyou'll probably just want the gimp and inkscape21:19
holsteinmaybe scribus21:19
holsteini think those are the popular ones21:19
holsteinpgahlen: could be a bad downloaded image21:22
holsteinhmmm....21:22
