X9nLinuxL_Which version of flashplayer do I need to use on a G4 Mac?  (Using 8.04 iirc)00:04
Dragnslcr|z00m|- the -p option to netstat will show you which program has each port open00:05
SnowhogX9nLinuxL_: If you don't already have Flash installed, then just run from the console, sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree, otherwise, run sudo apt-get remove adobe-flashplugin && sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree00:19
SentynelGot a couple of issues with the KDE4.6 RC, are they known? a) it plays the logon sound twice, and b) it won't remember the GTK style settings and resets to no style on every boot00:24
James147Sentynel: its best to testa a clean profile (by creating a new user) after a mojor upgrade to make sure nothing went wrong with updating teh config files00:27
James147^^ that is, if you are having problems after the upgrade :)00:27
SentynelJames147: okay, the logon sound thing isn't happening, but the GTK style disappearing is00:31
James147Sentynel: well at least thats one of the problems solved :) (~/.kde/share/config/kde.notifyrc if probally the file responsible for the notification sound problem).  Afraid I cannot really help with the second problem though :(00:35
Sentynelhm, I don't have that file00:36
James147:S its likly to be one of the files in the config directory, thats where allmost all of kdes configs get stored00:38

andrejHello, can anybody help me with akonadi?01:41
andrejAt scans the disk on every start again.01:42
andrejSo after a login I can't use the computer for about 20 minutes, because the hard disk just rattles.01:42
Daskreechandrej: sure that's not strigi?01:43
claydohandrej: its not akonadi scannning the disk I think it may be Strigi -01:43
DaskreechAkonadi is a store it doesn't do any searching01:44
andrejwell... at least while i see several processes starting with akonadi in krunner the computer is unusable01:44
andrejAnd I can reproduce it, if I meanually start akonadi01:45
andrejSo it is at least related.01:45
DaskreechWell Strigi and akonadi are tangentally related.01:45
DaskreechThough I suppose if you have a large enough database it can thrash the drive01:46
Daskreechwhat happens if you stop strigi and then start akonadi?01:46
andrejHm.... I don't see a process "strigi" in krunner.01:47
James147andrej: Turn it off in System settings > desktop search01:48
andrejOk, found the options.01:49
andrejNepomuk is on, strigi is off.01:50
andrejand i deactivated the personal folder to be scanned for strigi01:51
Daskreechk01:51
andrejI'll try to start akonadi server01:52
* James147 notes that strigi uses virtuoso-t as its backend for scanning... if he remembers correctly01:52
shane4ubuntuohhh, strigi or nepomuk   which is recommended?01:52

shane4ubuntubetter yet, can either look inside openoffice docs?01:53
James147shane4ubuntu: what do you mean by or? strigi uses nepomuk01:53
claydohshane4ubuntu: strigi is for serarching nepomuk is for taggis and comments, etc01:53
shane4ubuntulol, ooops, I'm ignorant, I thought they were different01:53
shane4ubuntuI thought nepomuk was the new thing, I recognize strigi as being around for a while01:54
shane4ubuntudoes it search inside openoffice docs?01:54
James147shane4ubuntu: note sure...01:54
andrejOk, now akonadi doesn't start.01:54
shane4ubuntuok, thanks01:55
andrejBUT it doesn't crawl my hard disk.01:55
andrejSo it seems to be better.01:55
shane4ubuntuandrej: but does it index everything?01:55

shane4ubuntuJames147: great!  Thanks01:56

shane4ubuntuhow do I turn it on?01:56

DaskreechYou should be fine but it is annoying02:35
veinosi have no idea what that is and where it's from02:36

RipizHello11:01
RipizCan anyone help to install Kubuntu 10.10 on kinda old PC?11:02
nickmoeckIs it possible to have quassel use an external program in an alias?11:06
RipizCan anyone help to install Kubuntu 10.10 on kinda old PC?11:22
rork`Ripiz: how old and what are the pc's specs: cpu, RAM, graphics card?11:22
RipizIt's 9 - 10 years old. Diuron 800 MHz (Pentium 3 equivalent), 256MB RAM, no graphics card, just some integrated chip11:24
rork`nickmoeck: aliassing to /exec scriptname should do the job11:25
nickmoeckrork`: Ah, thanks. I totally forgot about /exec11:25
rork`Ripiz: I maverick the nvidia 96 and 173 drivers are broken. If you try to install on such a system use the alternate install cd and not the desktop installer. I installed kubuntu lucid it on a 1200Mhz, 768MB RAM, Integrated nvidia NForce2 and it gave me a very slow experience, so first you might want to install a lighter desktop interface, e.d.xfce (xubuntu) or lxde (lubuntu). I prefer lubuntu but it's harder to configure then KDE or Gnome. The11:30
rork` choice is yours ofc.11:30
rork`Ubuntu Maverick with Gnome worked fine on the system though, except for the graphics11:31
Ripizrork`: Alright, thanks.11:36
nickmoeckrork`: Would I have to put the script in a particular place? /exec /home/nick/script.sh is not working11:36
rork`nickmoeck: I don't know, maybe use the complete path11:39
nickmoeckthat is the complete path :) I will tinker with it. Thanks again for your help11:40
rork`oops, missed that :P11:40
nickmoeckSolved :) For future reference in case anyone find the log of this channel via google some day, scripts for quassel have to go in /usr/share/kde4/apps/quassel/scripts11:42
RipizI boot Install CD, choose Start Kubuntu, after it I get blue loading screen, takes like 5 minutes to load. Then it turns into black screen, either empty desktop, either desktop with error message. Any workaround for this problem? (P.S. I'm new to Linux)11:55
* nickmoeck is Now Playing: Real World by Matchbox Twenty11:56
rork`Ripiz: did you use the desktop cd?12:14
RipizYes12:16
rork`Ripiz: could be a graphics driver problem, also the desktop install shouldn't be used with less then 512 MB RAM, try the alternate install cd12:22

walter_etc/x11 look in the folder. and the xorg.conf file is not there14:16
magmalinuxor i use "logithèque ubuntu" in application menu ;) its work fine :D14:17
slhkyou can create it "kdesudo kate  /etc/X11/xorg.conf" use "man xorg.conf" as a reference you can find many examples on the web, still remember about the warning!14:17
slhkif you do a mistake and the X server won't start anymore you will be left with just the text consolle14:18
magmalinuxchromium web browser work fine but firefox have more speed14:18

c2tarunI m using ubuntu 10.04. I want to format and install a fresh copy of kubuntu 10.04. I have two drives and I dont want to loose data in those two drives. Can anyone tell me how to format?16:27
shane4ubuntuc2tarun: did you put /home on a separate partition?16:28
DarthFrogc2tarun: What is on those two drives?  How are they partitioned?16:28
c2tarunactually Sorry, I have three partitions. On one ubuntu is installed. I have my personal files on those two drives.16:28
c2tarunand I installed ubuntu on whole drive. Then rebooted with live CD and partitioned using gparted.16:29
DarthFrogOK, let me get this straight:  You have your /home directory on two drives and your Ubuntu system on a third drive?16:31

c2tarunDarthFrog: how can i check that?16:32
DarthFrogAnd how big is your /home directory?16:33
DarthFrogWell, how do you access the data drives in Kubuntu?16:33
c2tarunI dont have kubuntu now, I have ubuntu. and i simply click on Places and Click on the drive name. My home directory is around 4GB16:34
DarthFrogAnd how big is the hard drive that you have Ubuntu installed upon?16:35
c2tarun30 GB16:35
DarthFrogOK, that drive is the one only you need to touch.  You don't need to do anything with the two data drives.  First, if you have any data that you really care about, make a backup of it before starting.  Secondly, copy your /home directory to one of the data drives (as a backup, as you'll be re-partitioning your system drive).16:37
c2tarunI allready copied my important stuffs to other drives. I copied Important stuffs from my home drive too. Do i have to copy whole home folder?16:38
genii-aroundWill the 64bit install CD still auto-detect and install the netbook edition? My cpu is an Atom N450 which uses 64 bit instruction set16:38
DarthFrogBoot the 10.10 LiveCD and install the new system to your system drive.  Use the partitioner to re-partition the 30 gig system drive to 3 partitions: one is 2x the size of your RAM and is your swap partition, the second is about 10 GB and is your / partition.  The last one is the rest of the drive and is to be mounted as /home.16:38
DarthFrogc2tarun:  Copy everything on your home folder that you care about.16:39
DarthFrogThen, after the new system is installed, copy your old /home back to the new one.  This way, in future youi'll only ever have to deal with the / partition again.16:40
c2tarunI guess I already have a swap partition for ubuntu. Can't I use that?16:40
DarthFrogYes.16:40
c2tarunI am not getting about the concept of second and third partition. Can you explain a bit please?16:40
DarthFrogOne drive, three partitions.16:41
DarthFrogSwap, root and home partitions.16:41
c2tarunsorry to ask this :( but what is the difference between drive and partition?16:41
DarthFrogOK, you shouldn't be doing this, if you don't know.  In a nutshell, partitions are sub-divisions of a drive.16:42
rjwiiiI plugged in my printer and the applet appeared, but my printer isn't there ...16:42
DarthFrogc2tarun: What you are attempting to do requires more than basic knowledge and experience.  Please get an experienced, knowledgeble friend to help you.16:44
c2tarunnormally when i try to select any drive during ubuntu install, i always get an error of boot drive not selected. So what i use to do is, free some space using gparted, then during installation i get the option of use the largest unpartitioned space. I select that and done. But i guess its not the right way. So can you please tell me something about the error 'boot drive not selected'.16:44
c2tarunDarthFrog: The biggest problem is :( i m the only one among my friends, who use linux. No one know anything about it :(16:45
DarthFrogc2tarun: In your case, the easiest thing would be to unplug the two data drives from the computer (if the system can't see them, it can't overwrite them!), then re-install Ubuntu, letting it have the whole drive.16:47
tsimpsongenii-around: afaik, the netbook edition is 32bit only16:47
c2tarunDarthFrog: U are getting it wrong. I m using a Laptop. I have three partitions on one drive. I can't unplug anyone of them16:48
