IledenHi! I have a Win7/xubuntu dualboot laptop. When I turn down the brightness (with Fn-f5 key combo) on Win7, for example to minumum, then boot to linux, the screen is still the same dimness. However, this Win7 minimum value is now the MAXIMUM linux can reach. Could this be XFCE specific or general ubuntu issue? Any ideas how to fix this?10:48
nicofsi have a slight issue with my desktop background... there is no image or solid color, instead it shows whatever has been there before. so if for instance i have a window open and minimize it, the image of that window stays on the desktop...11:19
TheSheepnicofs: make sure xfdesktop is running11:20
nicofsTheSheep, how can i check that? system monitor?11:21
TheSheepfor example11:22
TheSheepor just run it11:22
nicofsTheSheep, ok. System Monitor doesn't show it... so i guess it's not running...11:24
TheSheepwell, then run it11:25
nicofsTheSheep, i'm in the middle of an upgrade... will have to wait till that is done...11:26

StaRetjiFolks, is there a way to downgrade xfce4? If yes, can some help me here, just need few tips. Thx15:14
IledenHow can I set the area where windows are resized a bit larger than the two pixels I have currently?15:22
TheSheepIleden: use a different wm theme15:22
connecteduserStaRetji: I think in synaptic, you can select a different version for a package you select15:22
IledenTheSheep: Hm, wouldn't that make the border larger as well? I'd like to concerve the screen space15:22
TheSheepIleden: yes, it would, it's the same thing15:23
TheSheepIleden: you can use a modifier key for resizing instead, then it doesn't matter where in the window you click15:23
IledenSo the area can't extend to window contents?15:23
IledenTheSheep: Hm, how do I set up a modifier key for that?15:23
TheSheepIleden: in window manager tweaks, the default is alt15:24
TheSheepalt+left click is moving, alt+right click is resizing15:24
IledenTheSheep: well well, didn't know that. It'll do fine, thanks!15:25
StaRetjiconnecteduser: thx for that, I have to downgrade because I'm experiencing a lot of problems with the latest version to which I have upgraded today15:25
IledenAnother question: How do I set the system "fixed font"? Appearance only lists one "default font"?15:26
StaRetjiconnecteduser: I've started synaptic, but I can't seem to find different versions15:26
connecteduserwhat problems, may I ask?15:27
StaRetjiMy launcher icons are all renamed to name.desktop15:29
StaRetjiso I have mess on the desktop15:29
TheSheepIleden: I don't think there is a system-wide fixed font default15:29
StaRetjiand xfce4-panel15:29
StaRetjiis not hidden completely, which looks stupid if you are running xbmc for example15:30
StaRetjiin synaptic, force package is gray e15:30
StaRetjigrayed out15:31
StaRetjisorry, Force Version15:31
IledenTheSheep: Hm, some software seems to want to use it, "meld" for example. Could be it's just a Gnome thing, and only affect programs designed for gnome...?15:32
IledenTheSheep: it can of course be overridden, so not a big problem, just wondering.15:32
TheSheepIleden: that's possible15:34
TheSheepIleden: you can try the gconf-edit15:34
IledenTheSheep: yes, probably. Seems the "other software" I was thinking about are gedit and gnome-terminal... :)15:34
StaRetjiSo, I've tried googling for the solution on how to fix this, just two issues, to no avail, so I have to downgrade15:35

AderlassHello18:22
AderlassOkay, i'm new to xubuntu and linux. So i need support. MUCH support!18:23
Aderlass:-)18:23
TheSheep!hi18:25
ubottuHi!, Welcome to #xubuntu! Feel free to ask questions and help people out. The channel guidelines are at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IRC/Guidelines. Enjoy your stay!18:25
Guest12982what would you like to know?18:30
AderlassOkay, i'll just ask then. :) I want to install xubuntu on my Netbook (Lenovo S12 ION), i have 35GB available for the OS. Wich Mount points should i create (/boot, /home, /tmp etc.) and how big should they be, especially /tmp. Do i need all available in the list? If not, can you recommend wich ones i should create?18:31
AderlassSorry, needet to form the sentence so something understandable. :)18:31
Aderlassd18:32
Guest12982all your will need is "/" (20GB) and swap18:32
Guest12982I put "/home" on its own incase I need to reinstall ubuntu on"/" I dont need to backup docs etc..18:33
AderlassThat would have been my next question, thanks. :)18:33
Guest12982some people require all to be seperate but I dont bother18:33
Guest12982definately go for xubuntu or UNE 10.418:34
charlie-tcaIf you create a separate /home, you only need 4-10GB for /18:34
Guest12982unity on UNE 10.10 is slow on a netbook18:34
AderlassOkay, thanks. :) And how big should /tmp be? 2x RAM?18:34
Guest12982it depends on how much user data your will require18:35
charlie-tca you do not need a separate /tmp18:35
AderlassI don't know that yet. :) First time i use Linux. :)18:35
Guest12982but at least 20GB "/".. but it can be whatever you think for your needs18:35
Guest12982you wont need a seperate tmp18:35
AderlassOkay :) /boot isn't neccessary either?18:36
Guest12982if the name suggests (could be wrong) this is only used for temp storage..18:36
Guest12982no they will be created on /18:36
AderlassI may should add that i plan to youse truecrypt.18:36
Guest12982will this install be taking up all of the HDD or are you duel booting with windows?18:36
AderlassDon't know if that changes anything18:37
Guest12982don't know what that is..enlighten me18:37
AderlassWell, i have 2 Partitions. 35GB for the Linux (only Linux) and the other big one is still NTFS because i don't know if i'll keep Linux and i had no chance to backup the files on the big one. :)18:38
AderlassTrueCrypt is a partition Encryption tool.18:38
Guest12982ok that's cool, always install ubuntu after windows, otehr way round you will have to play with win boot menu18:38
Guest12982that should work with the standard partition setup, ubuntu will now encrypt home during install :D18:39
Guest12982take a look at UNE 10.4, I use on my netbook and is (in my opinion) the best18:40
AderlassDoes it support NVIDIA graphics? Just had bad experiences with MeeGo on that topic. :)18:40
Guest12982yes I've had no  bad experiences so far..18:41
AderlassOkay, i'll just read a little bit about UNE. :)18:42
Guest12982you will also be able to access the win partition to backup at later date18:42
Guest12982Good luck!18:43
AderlassAh that's good. And another thing: I plan to use it as a media player in my living room, to watch SD and HD Movies on my TV wich has a D-SUB and a HDMI port. Does that work?18:43
AderlassThe Netbook has both ports too. :)18:44
Guest12982it will work out of the box but upscaling and framerate will depend on board gpu18:44
Guest12982YES! :D18:44
AderlassNice. :D18:45
AderlassThat's okay, at least under Win7 the GPU decodes HD.18:45
AderlassMPlayer should able to do that too18:45
AderlassAt least that's what i've read. :)18:46
Guest12982Display: 12.1 WXGA (1280 X 800) LED 200 nit, 250g .. Graphics: Intel integrated GMA 950, Nvidia ION18:46
AderlassAh nice, ION2, isn't it?18:46
Guest12982should let you watch 720p film no probs18:46
AderlassEven 1080p worked. :-)18:47
AderlassNot with the standart media player, but with MPCHC & VLC18:47
Guest12982that was my next suggestion try VLC18:47
AderlassYeah, i plan to use VLC and MPlayer. I don't like the Pause/play-lag on VLC, really getting on my nerves..18:48
AderlassBut maybe that's just a Win-issue. :)18:49
Guest12982hopefully ubuntu will resolve that18:49
AderlassI think it's a VLC issue, a friend of mine has the same problem in ArchLinux.18:49
Guest12982but a little lag on a netbook to play 1080p film is minor annoyance ;D18:50
AderlassOf course :D But it happens with and resolution..18:50
AderlassAnd any codec / container18:51
Aderlassand = any18:51
Guest12982ah check for CPU usage during films, using system monitor18:51
AderlassThe reason i waited so laong for using linux was Flash. I often watch streams, sometimes in HD but the Atom CPU is not stroing enough for that. Under Win the hardware acceleration for flash works perfectly but that wasn't the fact for linux. But now there is a first beta for Lin with hardware acceleration too. :) I want to test that.18:52
AderlassIt's not the CPU, i have that on my Workstation here too...18:53
AderlassCPU: 4 x Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU 760 @ 2.80GHz @ 3409 MHZ (Intel64 Family 6 Model 30 Stepping 5), 1024 kb Cache18:53
AderlassSo... ;)18:53
AderlassMust be VLC18:53
Guest12982must be18:53
AderlassIt's not that the video is asynch...it's just when i pause it and resume later, it skips a second or sometimes even 5.18:54
AderlassAnd sometimes the video stops playing before i saw everything. Just 1-2 seconds too, but it sucks on short clips.18:54
AderlassSo, i'll put on some Pink Floyd and get to work. :) I'll be back with questions in a few minutes, i think. :)18:55
Guest12982canny find anything solid to fix.. manly hardware suggested on the internet18:57
Guest12982No worries18:57
AderlassConverting the NTFS-Space to EXT4 later isn't a problem, right?19:04
Guest12982ntfs of older partition..or new (using for linux)?19:05
Guest12982you want this install to be on ext419:05
AderlassYes of course, the 35GB Partition will be fully EXT419:05
Guest12982ok just checking19:06
AderlassBut the other partition wich ist still NTFs19:06
Guest12982you would need to re format the partition to ext419:06
AderlassAh okay.19:06
Sysiformatting is eas19:06
AderlassSo i have to wait for my external HD's return. :)19:06
Guest12982yes19:06
Guest12982well if there's enough space move data to linux - re format - move back19:07
AderlassNah, ther's over 150GB of Data.19:08
Aderlass:-)19:08
Guest12982which OS you choice?19:08
AderlassDownloading UNE now. :)19:08
Guest12982which one?19:09
Aderlass10.1019:09
Guest12982Nooo lol19:09
AderlassOh?19:09
Guest12982it have a funny gui "unity" quite slow and a pain in the arse19:09
Guest12982obviously you should try them all, get your fit19:10
Guest12982it's very good tho 10.1019:10
AderlassOh okay :D19:10
AderlassCan't i change the GUI later if i don't like Unity?19:10
Guest12982and if unity bugs you, you can always change to gnome interface19:10
Aderlass:D19:10
AderlassMaybe gnome would be better if i want to learn to use linux.19:11
charlie-tcaI suggest taking UNE to #ubuntu, please. This is Xubuntu support19:11
AderlassOh sorry19:11
Guest12982xubuntu rocks!19:11
charlie-tcaThen why did you tell a user to use UNE?19:12
charlie-tcathat's not Xubuntu, nor even close to it19:12
Guest12982I didn't. I mealy suggested it as an alternative netbook distro19:13
Guest12982xfce all the way for netbooks19:13
AderlassSo what big difference is there besides the GUI? :) Or is there any at all?19:14
Guest12982xubuntu runs on xfce as UNE or Ubuntu runs on Gnome19:14
Guest12982xubuntu is much lighter and quicker on older equiptment19:15
charlie-tcait is also "lighter and quicker" on new equipment :-)19:15
Guest12982and better in my opinion19:15
Guest12982YES!19:15
Guest12982i used ubuntu for a year before finding xubuntu, never gone back19:16
AderlassAh okay...so i can have xubuntu still if i don't like the UNE simply (I don't really know how simple it is ;-)) by switching the GUI from gnome to xfce?19:16
Guest12982installing xfce inside UNE via "apt-get install xubuntu-desktop"19:17
Guest12982..or something like that19:17
AderlassHaha :D19:17
AderlassLinux rocks?19:17
charlie-tcano, you would have to install xubuntu-desktop, and then you might have to work on it a bit19:17
AderlassHave no problem with working.. :)19:17
Guest12982fresh install is the cleanest route19:17
AderlassHmhm. Now i don't know with wich one i should start :D19:18
Guest12982you may end up with some horrible creation UNE-Xubuntu cross bread19:18
AderlassI like cross bread. :D19:18
AderlassSorry.19:18
AderlassOkay, i'm still in the xubuntu Setup.19:19
charlie-tcaI would recommend starting with Xubuntu, but I might be prejudiced, as QA Lead and project leader19:19
AderlassAnd the UNE download still needs a few minutes, so i'll start with xubuntu.19:20
AderlassYeah, maybe you are. :)19:20
AderlassBut i came for xubuntu here in the first place, so i think i'll start with that.19:20
Guest12982how big is the screen19:20
charlie-tcaI try to remain neutral. I just think Xubuntu is the best thing going... :-)19:20
Guest12982xubuntu all the way19:20
Aderlass12"19:20
Aderlass12.119:20
Guest12982I wanted to say UNE but was too afraid of you19:21
AderlassWhat is the OS storing on the /home partitoion or the/home folder?19:22
Aderlass:D19:22
Guest12982Xubuntu is a BEAST. It has a place in my heart19:22
charlie-tcajust the user data and configurations19:22
Aderlassconfigurations for the OS only? Or for every program?19:22
knomeeven the praises for xubuntu are nice, please try to keep the discussion on support ;)19:22
charlie-tcaAderlass: /home is where all the user stuff goes19:23
charlie-tcaconfiguration for every application, all the data the user saves, all your documents, etc19:23
AderlassOkay, so like the "User" Folder in Windows19:23
AderlassAh okay19:23
AderlassGood19:23
charlie-tcaDon't know windows enough to say19:23
AderlassIs the order of creating the partitions relevant?19:23
charlie-tcaGenerally, best to create /  at the beginning of the space.19:24
charlie-tcabut you can create partitions in any order19:24
* charlie-tca going hide again now19:24
AderlassOkay, thank you. :)19:25
charlie-tcaThank Guest12982 for so much advice and help!19:26
AderlassNo, i can't because he maybe will think that i am finished. :)19:27
Guest12982lol19:27
Aderlass./tmp as own partition has no advantages at all? Seed/organizing?19:28
Aderlass*speed19:28
Guest12982no I don't think it would19:29
AderlassOkay, and Ext4 is above all others?19:30
Guest12982it's used for storing temp files, which don't need to be writen to disk, this is cleared not cached19:30
Guest12982yes19:31
AderlassGood. So i will make a / and a/home partition.19:32
Guest12982ok19:32
* charlie-tca thinks "Don't forget a swap partition" ;-)19:33
AderlassDon't confuse me! :D19:33
Guest12982you will be needing a swap partition19:33
AderlassOkay, didn't know that. :)19:34
AderlassHow big schould it be?19:34
Guest12982800Mb (ish)19:34
AderlassHmm there is no /swap in the dropdown list.19:35
Guest12982then instead of ext4 you are selecting swap19:35
AderlassAh19:35
Guest12982these guys can probably advise you better on xubuntu filesize and swap as it can use so little19:36
AderlassIs it possible to change the partition sizes later?19:37
Sysion livecd yes19:37
AderlassNice19:38
AderlassOh "Some of the partitions you created are too small, Plaese make the following partitions at least this large: /home 0TB0"19:38

AderlassYep..19:40
Guest12982one sec..19:40

Guest12982you should be fine ;)19:41

Guest12982then continue through19:42
charlie-tcaOnly got 35GB, right? 20 root, 15 home, 2 swap is 3719:43
