dmcglone1Hi Unit193, Cheri703 I'll be back in a second00:31
dmcgloneback. did an update, and had to reboot. doesn't linux seem to be following in M$'s footsteps00:35
Cheri703eh, you only really have to reboot when there's a kernel update00:35
dmcgloneyeah00:35
Cheri703and you don't HAVE to reboot immediately, just if you want to hop kernels00:35
dmcglonetrue00:35
Unit193Cheri703: I got another P4 2.4 processor....00:38
Cheri703nice00:38
Unit193Need 512 DDR Laptop RAM?00:53
Cheri703uhm, if you don't?00:53
Unit193Spare or currently can place in a lap?00:54
Cheri703would have to check the ones currently in the house to know for sure00:54

Unit193Don't like it?01:04
dmcglone1nope. it's actually slower than using my ISP's01:05
dmcglone1I've been eyeballing this one http://www.system76.com/product_info.php?cPath=28&products_id=10601:10
Cheri703nice01:16
Cheri703did you see the one from zareason?01:16

Cheri703http://zareason.com/shop/Hoverboard-X30.html01:17
dmcglone1Thats a nice one too!01:19
dmcglone1only thing stopping me from buying a netbook is development01:19
dmcglone1Oh no, the one from zareason only has intel chips01:20
dmcglone1:-(01:20
Cheri703http://zareason.com/shop/Strata-Pro-13.html01:20
Cheri703why is that bad?01:20

Unit193Well... the smell just went away :)02:10
Unit193What are you watching?02:11
dmcglone"all worked up" on Tru tv,but I'm not really paying much attention to it02:18
dmcgloneJust got done writing my next blog post for tomorrow :-)02:53
Cheri703so I think I decided I'm going to dual boot the compaq my dad gave me03:15
Unit193Why? with what ones?03:15
Cheri703I have a compaq oem xp pro cd...and that way I can run some windows cpu heavy things without bothering my netbook03:16
Cheri703xp pro and ubuntu 10.10 I think03:16
Cheri703so long as 10.10 works properly on it03:16
Unit193Laptop or Desktop? (does it need ram :D )03:17
Cheri703*windows only things03:17
Cheri703desktop, and YES03:17
Cheri703you said you had ddr laptop ram?03:17
Cheri703and that won't work in the b130, correct?03:17
Unit193What type? DDR laptop, yes (b130 =DDR2)03:17
Cheri703this: PC2-4200 DDR SDRAM SODIMMs.?03:17
Cheri703other laptop takes that, but not sure how many slots for it03:18
Unit193This desktop needs DDR... if I can't use new 1G (KTD440G/1G) it's yours03:20
Cheri703oh?03:22
Unit193If it doesn't fit the game comp (would be nice for a spare, but...)03:22
Cheri703well, thanks :)03:23
Unit1932X 256 PC2-4200 DDR2 desktops (fit anything that needs little ram?)03:25
Unit193What laptop can use the DDR?03:25
Cheri703the grey one my husband was using thursday03:25
Cheri703*maybe03:25
Cheri703have to check on slots03:26
Unit193It uses WinXP? cpu-z is the tool you need03:26
Cheri703yeah, it's somewhere though, not sure where he put it03:28
Cheri703I'll dig it out tomorrow03:28
dmcglonenight everyone03:30
dmcglone:-)03:30
Unit193bye dmcglone!03:30
Unit193Cheri703: Mind doing a trade for it/them?03:30
Cheri703maybe?03:31
Cheri703what did you have in mind?03:31
Unit193have anything you don't need I may find useful? :)03:32
Cheri703hmm...will have to poke around03:32
Cheri703I do have a few cd-rw drives laying around. a 250w (ish) power supply, have to see what else03:33
Unit193again, the 1G is only if it doesn't fit Zeta (oldish comp that may use SDRAM)03:33
Cheri703gotcha03:34
Cheri703np03:34
Cheri703I'll look around03:34
Unit193anything else you might need?03:35
Cheri703hmmmm...will ponder03:35
Unit193I may have a internal USB hub...03:36
Cheri703nice03:40
Cheri703I have 2 15 (maybe 17?) inch crt monitors :) not that you'd want them03:40
Unit193http://www.laptopmemoryupgrade.com/memory/HewlettPackardOmniBookXE2SeriesMemory.html03:47
Unit193That's what I have used...03:47
Cheri703omnibook?03:47
Cheri703you have one or?03:47
Cheri703I have some laptop ram that wouldn't fit any of the other ones here03:47
Unit193Can't really be upgraded...03:48
Cheri703ah03:49
Cheri703ok, so dell xps m140 only has one RAM slot and it has 512 already :/03:51
Unit193I think I found it:http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/hp-omnibook-xe2-c/1707-3121_7-30074921.html03:57
Cheri703nice03:59
Unit193Not really.... slower then a turtle on a hot day....03:59
Cheri703Unit193: any non-computer things you might find useful? we have random stuff sometimes. many times someone as been like, "I could really use a ____" and we've happened to have one :)04:09
Cheri703OH, also, good battery arrived today04:09
Unit193anything else I should tell friend while I'm at it?04:10
Cheri703uhm...no? I will check battery + not-my-charger and see how it does. other option is if you guys (either of you) have a 3 pronged pigtail sitting around (the brick > wall part of an adapter) because I have the ACTUAL charger, but only the brick to computer part :/04:12
Cheri703basically this: http://www.bizrate.com/miscellaneous/oid855531865.html04:12
Unit193I could almost bet you money that I could get one....04:13
Cheri703ok, give me a minute04:14
Cheri703ok, yeah, if you can get one, I have the proper dell cord instead of that crappy replacement one04:15
* Cheri703 is proud of herself :D06:28
Unit193That's most of the time very good, what did you do?06:29
Cheri703I set up a headless dual-boot machine :D I can remotely choose which OS I want, then log back into it.06:30
Cheri703I may be recruiting your help on putty, I've not used it before, might give it a shot06:30
Unit193I can't get off of it...06:30
Cheri703took me FOREVER to get the auto-switch-os thing working (mostly my error >.<) but it works now06:30
Cheri703get off of ?06:30
Unit193PuTTY06:31
Cheri703ah06:31
Cheri703so yeah, I might have you help me out with it :)06:31
Unit193KiTTY is also good... How did you do the remote OS thing?06:31
Unit193Grub?06:31
Cheri703well, there's a thing in grub, and I made it into a script, so I can set it to do a one-time boot to the other OS. then it'll boot back to ubuntu06:32
Cheri703and I made them both have the same ip, so I can vnc into either with the same settings06:32
Cheri703and I can currently ssh into the ubuntu side, but I'd like to ssh into the windows side if possible06:32
Unit193Yes it is06:33
Cheri703ok06:33
Cheri703sweet :D06:33
Cheri703not tonight, but at some point I'm going to consult your putty experience06:33
Unit193CopSSH/cygwin or FreeSSHd for ssh (no X :( )06:34
Cheri703ok, don't tell me tonight! my brain is in weird hyper mode and adding more info at this point won't do me any good :)06:34
=== locobot_1_2 is now known as locobot_1
thafreakHoly crap, I haven't been on here in A WHILE17:07
thafreakI'm estimating atleast since Dec 22...17:08
thafreakI haven't been in here since last year17:08
thafreakAnyone around?17:10
thafreakJust logged into my machine at home, fired up the browser, and it still had tabs open from when I was looking up stuff for my last stupid class17:11
thafreakdon't you hate that...17:11
thafreakfinding browser tabs you left open, while researching crap that pissed you off...17:12
* Cheri703 is around, sortof17:12
thafreakHey Cheri703, hows the job hunt going?17:13
Cheri703well, it looks like I'm staying, at least for a while. had a discussion with them yesterday, end result will be: actual contractor situation, on-call, more money than last year, so I'm willing to at least see if they can refrain from being insane17:13
thafreakexcellent, that's good to hear!17:14
deejoe> willing to at least see if they can refrain from being  insane17:15
deejoemore like "more willing to put up with them being insane"17:15
Cheri703true17:16
deejoesince nothing mention seems to me like a "we'll be less insane" kind of thing17:16
deejoes/mention/mentioned/17:16
Cheri703well, having a contract in place and being on-call will be different from "we want you to pay your own taxes but be available/working 40+ hours per week for what would be under minimum wage for a w-2 employee working 40 hours a week"17:17
deejoeok, yes17:30
deejoegood point17:30
Cheri703:)17:32
Cheri703we'll see. how much more than last year is still tbd, but I'm holding out for a pretty substantial increase (though still way under what I "should" be making)17:33
Cheri703I'm honestly surprised we did alright for 2010...taxes are going to SUCK though :( didn't hold any aside last year17:33
Cheri703woo! my little project is coming together!17:51
* Cheri703 is pleased17:51
deejoesay hello to mandatory quarterly payments17:55
Cheri703yeah :/17:55
Cheri703planning on setting aside quite a bit for it this year, and have an accountant doing my taxes this year17:55
kyanardagsorry, I got disconnected, I'm reposting my question (with minor typo corrections):  I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 on HP Pavilion dv7 and I have ATI Mobility Radeon graphics card. I take it granted that due to driver issues suspend/resume will not work. But I saw that at System76 website they sell Linux laptops with ATI cards and everything works fine. I contacted them and they said suspend/resume issues can be resolved by fiddling with Powe18:25
kyanardagrManagement. Is there any expert living in Columbus who can help me fixing this issue?18:25
Cheri703kyanardag: just because system76 hw can suspend/resume alright, doesn't guarantee yours will. some hardware just doesn't like it. It isn't necessarily due to ATI18:28
cheri-703Woo Android phone19:04
canthus13kyanardag: suspend/resume has more to do with the BIOS than the video card.  Try updating the BIOS on your machine and see if that fixes the problem.20:32
kyanardagcanthus13, as far as I know the BIOS is up to date20:34
canthus13kyanardag: doublecheck anyway. THe main problem with suspend/resume is that most BIOS is a buggy mess of bandaided-together crap that caters to windows.  Linux attempts to minimize problems by pretending to be Windows when talking to BIOS.20:35
canthus13Unfortunately, BIOS is closed-source, which means a lot of reverse-engineering and guesswork on the part of the kernel programmers.20:36
Unit193canthus13: can'20:36
Unit193t you use biosdecode?20:36
Unit193To see what version you have20:36
canthus13Unit193: Probably. I've seen some disassembled BIOS code, and it's a scary mess.20:36
kyanardagcanthus13, i'll check it out again. so, the suspend/resume can not be corrected by a single file hiding in depths of /etc ?20:37
canthus13Oh. that, I dunno. most BIOS shows the version on boot and inside the CMOS setup.20:37
canthus13kyanardag: Depends on what's causing it.  It *could*, I suppose.. I"d play around with the power management settings.  I wouldn't hold out much hope, though. my wife's dv6227cl hates to suspend, no matter what I try.20:38
canthus13It boots fast enough that she doesn't really care, though.20:38
Unit193biosdecode or dmidecode may work without reboot20:38
canthus13bah. Freaking windows is overriding my desktop control keys. :(20:39
canthus13Whoah.  System76 dropped their prices a LOT.  my dream laptop is about 1000 bucks cheaper now..20:41
kyanardagmy biosdecode and dmidecode results are here: http://pastebin.com/MCYeLi0520:42
canthus13Looks like F.12   I'd check HP's website and see if there's something newer.20:43
kyanardagHP website says completely different BIOS version:21:03
kyanardagWinFlash for HP Notebook System BIOS (for Notebooks with Intel Processors) 2010-07-23 , Version:F.42 A21:03
kyanardag_canthus13, thank you so much, i did the bios update and voila, suspend/resume works perfectly.. if you didn't tell me bios might be the problem, i would be spending hours changing files with no luck..21:53
thafreakI forgot how awesome openldap can be!22:09
Unit193What are you using it for?22:17
canthus13kyanardag_: Any time. :)23:16
canthus13thafreak: I haven't forgotten how much of a pain in the ass <any>ldap can be. :P23:17
canthus13But yeah, sometimes I miss Active Directory. :)23:17
Unit193I think linux can connect to it... (don't need it for home)23:18
Cheri703so...just as a note: I'm soliciting tips/advice/whatever along the lines of either "things to do now to make your next installation easier" OR "tips for multi-booters"23:18
canthus13tip for multi-booters: delete windows. you'll have more hard drive space and less confusion.23:18
Cheri703well, yes23:19
canthus13Put windows inside a virtual machine where it can't hurt anything but itself.23:19
deejoelvm for the win23:19
Unit193Can't really do that if it isn't your computer23:20
canthus13true.23:20
Cheri703the one I set up as a dual-boot is WAY too slow for a vm23:20
Unit193all too true...23:21
Cheri703I added 256 ram to it, and it's just over 512 >.<23:21
Cheri7032.4 ghz 64 bit processor though...so it has some potential23:22
Unit193The DDR2 one?23:22
Cheri703uhm, I dunno? it's the desktop my dad gave me23:22
Unit193Ah, desktop, was thinking laptop...23:23
Unit193anyone try LibreOffice yet?23:25
Cheri703no23:25
canthus1364 bit? Dual core?23:26
Cheri703not dual core23:26
Cheri703it's an old amd 6423:26
canthus13And 512MB ram is too little for Vista, 7, or XPSP3.23:26
canthus13Oh. Cool. :)23:26
Cheri703yeah, I need moar ram!23:26
canthus13More than enough ram for a web server, though. :)23:27
Unit193canthus13: 512 is fine for XP...23:27
canthus13Not for SP3.23:28
canthus13It drags butt badly.23:28
canthus13for SP2 and earlier it's fine.23:28
* Cheri703 just pictured a computer doing the doggy butt scoot O.o23:28
Unit193Depends...23:29
canthus13Cheri703: Hehehe.23:36
canthus13Unit193: yes. Any windows machine old enough to come with 512MB should wear depends.23:37
Unit193Funny to watch WinV on a new comp with 512 :D it fails soooo bad... (doesn't MS say you can do it??)23:39
