pr0ph3thow do I check the status of the rf switches?00:39
brobostigonpr0ph3t: elaborate, rf switches. please.00:41
pr0ph3tbrobostigon, apparently on a laptop the combination of fn + keys operates on rf switches witch would turn on or off the wifi or 3g00:42
brobostigonpr0ph3t: hw switches, yes.00:42
pr0ph3tbrobostigon, and you have soft ones and hw ones00:43
brobostigonpr0ph3t: yes,00:43
pr0ph3tbrobostigon, how do I check their status?00:43
pr0ph3tbrobostigon, I am trying to solve some problems with my 3g modem00:44
brobostigonpr0ph3t: iwould say in software, the output of dmesg, and lsusb and lspci and lshw to str.00:44
brobostigonpr0ph3t: mainly dmesg, the kernel buffer, as that will pick up on hw status changes.00:46
brobostigonnos da all, sleep well.00:50

pr0ph3twhen I do rfkills list all I get just the bluetooth and the wifi, but I should get the 3G modem as well, anyone know how I can activate rfswitches for that as well?02:33

kazadelooks like my brief adventure into GPU driver programming has come to an end. Came in to find the mini-pc with the SIS chipset I was intending to write one for had overheated and died :/09:33
kazadeis there anyway to tell whether it's the CPU or motherboard that has died?09:34
BigRedSkazade: generally, replace one and see if it fixes it, unfortunately09:37
BigRedSexcept for some fairly specific failure modes, in which case you need *some* posting09:38
kazadeyeah that's what I thought09:38
kazadefortunately, it's a P4 chip09:38
kazadeand I've found one on ebay for a fiver09:38
cpsMorning ubuntupeeps :)09:40

kazadeBigRedS, yeah, it used to act as a firewall at my company, but we moved to routers running Linux and so I acquired it about a year ago and let it sit in a cupboard09:41
kazadeBigRedS, then yesterday I dusted it off, installed Ubuntu on it and found that the SIS graphics chipset has no drivers (basically)09:41
cpsoh dear09:42
cpssterlingxs shelves have run completely dry09:42
cps:(09:42
kazadeBigRedS, so, I decided to dig in and attempt to write a KMS driver for it, I checked out the kernel and code from git, started reading up on GPU drivers and browsing the source code of the existing drivers and left it compiling the kernel last night...09:42
screen-xcps:  yeah, I tried to phone them yesterday, but they didn't answer :(09:43
kazadecame in this morning to find it still on, but not responding to SSH and without any picture when connecting a monitor and now turning on just spins up the fan, but does nothing else09:43
BigRedSkazade: ah. That *might* not be hardware failure. I've seen machines do that and people better than me coax them into life09:45
BigRedSno idea how, though. I wouldn't even know where to start really09:45

oceanhi guys i have a ati mobility readon HD 5470 graphic card (switchable with intel HD GMA). when i installed fglrx the GUI disappeared and took me to the command prompt. i had to make a clean install to get everything right.i havent re installed fglrx driver as of yet but i find my machine overheats quiet a lot. can any one guide me in the right direction pls.thanks09:56
kazadeocean, how did you install fglrx?09:56
kazadethrough the "Hardware Drivers" screen?09:56
oceankazade, when i installed ubntu 10.10 first time a pop up window came up asking if i want to install the new driver? i said yes and it installed09:58
kazadehmm09:58
kazadethat *shouldn't* break it :)09:58
kazadeocean, thinking... one sec...09:59
oceankazade, evenwithout fglrx my compiz is working. does it mean that intel HD GMA is the active g card on my ubuntu machine?10:00
oceannow10:00
kazadeocean, no, not necessarily, the open-source (e.g. built-in) ATI drivers also support Compiz10:01
kazadecan you do me a favour, open a terminal (CTRL+ALT+t) and type glxinfo10:01
kazadeand press enter10:01
directhexkazade, on some chips10:01
kazadethat should tell you if it's using the ATI or Intel drivers, if it says it can't find the command, you need to install a package called "mesa-utils" ( sudo apt-get install mesa-utils )10:01
oceankazade, just a sec10:02
kazadedirecthex, yeah10:02
kazadeocean, actually, I think the HD 5470 is an "Evergreen" chipset, which doesn't support Compiz with the built-in driver10:04
popeykazade: yes, lovely christmas, and even better new year10:06
oceankazade, so hos is the compiz workin now10:07
kazadeocean, I think your suspicion about it using the Intel chip may be correct10:07
kazadebut the output of glxinfo will confirm it10:07
oceankazade, http://pastebin.ca/204020610:08
kazadeocean: OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) Ironlake Mobile GEM 20100330 DEVELOPMENT10:09
kazadetry rebooting, entering the bios, and looking for some kind of switch from integrated -> discrete graphics10:09
oceankazade, is that the driver that is supporting m ATI card now?10:09
kazadeocean, no, that's the Intel driver. So it's using the Intel chip (which would explain why it wouldn't boot when you enabled fglrx)10:09
kazadeunfortunately switchable graphics aren't supported (well) in Linux yet10:10
kazadeso you're best bet is to set the bios to enable the ATI chip, then boot Ubuntu..10:10
kazadeif the output of glxinfo changes (e.g. it says AMD or ATI somewhere) then try enabling fglrx10:10
kazade(disclaimer: this is all guesswork, I've never used switchable graphics before :) )10:11
oceankazade, so the steps are to install fglrx and switch to discrete graphics from integrated? on windows switching is done by itself.10:11
hoovermornin lads10:11
kazadeocean, I'd switch the bios first to be on the safe side10:12
kazadethen if it boots and glxinfo says the ATI driver is in use, you can assume it'll be safe(r) to enable fglrx10:12
oceankazade, so if i switch and come to ubuntu would it show GUI without the driver installed already?10:12
kazadeocean, yes, it probably won't have compiz though10:13
kazadeit'll use the built-in (limited and slower) driver10:13
oceankazade, do i have to uninstall compiz. if i change the bios set up what happens to the ability of windows to switch G cards automatically10:14
kazadeno, compiz just won't run you don't need to uninstall it. I'd assume Windows can carry on working as usual, but you may find if you switch to Intel in Windows, and then reboot to Ubuntu, you might need to set it to discrete again in the bios (not totally sure about that, just a guess)10:15
ocean_sory i was disconnected10:15
kazadeocean_, no, compiz just won't run you don't need to uninstall it. I'd assume Windows can carry on working as usual, but you may find if you switch to Intel in Windows, and then reboot to Ubuntu, you might need to set it to discrete again in the bios (not totally sure about that, just a guess)10:15
kazadehopefully that won't be the case, and you are basically changing the "default" on boot (e.g. Windows will switch back to Intel when it starts if that's what you set it to do)10:16
kazadeocean_, relevant bug report is here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/31275610:18
lubotu3Ubuntu bug 312756 in xorg-server (Ubuntu) "MASTER: support graphics card hot switch" [Wishlist,Triaged]10:18
ocean_kazade, windows do it of its own when its connected to power and back when its on the battery. so i hope that wouldnt be affected10:18
kazadehmm, yes let's hope so. I think you may just have to try it to find out I'm afraid :(10:19
oceankazade, i just had a look at BIOS. i couldnt see anything to change for the graphics card. there is one option for virtualisation.is that the same thing10:29
kazadeocean, no...10:30

hooverhello bigcalm10:34
bigcalmHi hoovie :)10:34
kazadeocean, sorry, I'm running out of ideas10:35
oceankazade, its alright dear freind. i am just learning. could u answer me some more queries of mine. just to have a good grip on what i am doin10:36
kazadeocean, sure :)10:36
oceankazade, from the forums i could gather that fglrx could have interacted with the graphic driver already in place. why wouldnt i delete the one in place now and install fglrx and restart?10:38
oceanwould it work?10:38
kazadeI'm not totally sure if this is correct, but basically my theory is that Ubuntu can only *use* the intel chip, but it can *see* both of them. Because it can see the ATI chip it offers use the fglrx driver, but when you reboot fglrx tries to power the Intel chip...10:40
bigcalmI find having more than one make of gfx card in a linux box to be a disaster10:40
kazadeocean, basically, I think installing fglrx without being able to switch over to the ATI chip is just going to break your install10:41
oceankazade, if thats the case does it ever work on ubuntu 10.1010:41
kazadeif you can force the chip to switch from Intel -> ATI, then Ubuntu will use the built-in ati driver automatically, and then you can install fglrx10:42
screen-xis there no program for switching GPUs?10:42
kazadescreen-x, there is the vga_switcheroo stuff..10:43
kazadebut that involves compiling kernel stuff10:43
oceankazade, okay. so it means that ubuntu cant do that switch automatically as windows is doin! :-(10:43
kazadeocean, not yet, it's WIP (take a read of http://airlied.livejournal.com )10:43
kazadeocean, I'm afraid that for the time being (at least until 11.04, but more likely 11.10) you're stuck with Intel10:44
awilkinsJust got a coldcall from Delhi claiming to be tech support for Windows.... I almost wish I'd strung them along for a while but telling them I ran Linux got rid of them pretty fast...10:44
awilkinsProbably some kind of "virus scanner" scam.10:45
popeyyeah10:45
popeyalmost certainly10:45
kazadeocean, one thing you might try actually: boot into Windows with the AC connected, then reboot into Ubuntu... it's possible it'll hold the switch over on ATI10:45
kazadeyou can check that by using that glxinfo command10:45
kazadeif that works, it's still a hassle, because if you go that route and then install fglrx, you'll need to boot into Windows first each time you want to run Ubuntu (I'm not convinced it'll work, but it might)10:46
hooverawilkins: or you could have used the flowchart from hell for telemarketers10:46
oceankazade, anyway at the moment i am more worried about overheating. i can wait untill 11.04 lol10:47
screen-xhoover: linkage10:47
kazadeocean, you should be fine. Ubuntu is using the Intel chip with the official Intel driver...10:47
hooverhttp://www.xs4all.nl/~egbg/counterscript.html10:47
kazadeocean, unless of course it's still powering the ati chip regardless (which would eat your battery)10:47
screen-xhoover, thanks :)10:47
hooveryou're welcome ;-)10:48
kazadeocean, I've found something! http://digitizor.com/2010/10/09/how-to-switch-between-gpu-in-ubuntu-10-10/10:48
oceankazade, another problem with this laptop is the grub is being frequently deleted and i have to use a live cd to restore it.now i have made a bootable grub disk to help ot. is there any fix for it do u know. it seems i shouldnt have bot this bloody hp laptop10:49
BigRedSocean: grub is deleted? What exactly happens?10:49
BigRedSDoes grub actually disappear, or is it 'just' rendered unbootable?10:50
BigRedSAnd, when it has gone, what exactly happens then, too? How far through the boot does it get? What's the last thing on the screen?10:50
BigRedSSorry for the wall of questions :)10:50
kazadeocean, I think your graphics problem can be "fixed" by installing that Ubuntu Control Center (more instructions here: http://www.webupd8.org/2010/06/ubuntu-control-center-brings-simplicity.html )10:51
oceanBigRedS, as usual when u restart the system u would find missing OS warning instead of the grub menu10:51
popeyso reinstall grub?10:51
oceankazade, thanks.could u just tell me in order the things i have to install.10:51
oceanpls10:51
kazadesee that last link? just copy each line into a terminal one at a time10:52
BigRedSpopey: but there's some other issue if it's 'being frequently deleted' surely?10:52
kazade(depending on your achitecture)10:52
kazadethen, Ubuntu Control Center should appear in the menus somewhere10:52
kazadewhich has a switch for hybrid graphics (u need to restart though for it to take effect)10:52
oceanpopey, i am reinstalling atleast once in a day now. to save my time i have made a bootable grub disk.i think that bug exist  in ubuntu now10:52
popeyare you actually reinstalling it correctly though?10:52
popeyis there a bios option which protects the mbr? if so, switch that off10:53
screen-x"boot sector virus protection"10:53
oceanpopey, i am using this link to do it http://grub.enbug.org/Grub2LiveCdInstallGuide10:54
oceankazade, do i have to install the one in link ?10:54
oceanand then fglrx10:54
popeyocean: the bios option screen-x mentioned would likely cause your grub install to get undone10:54
kazadeocean, which architecture are you using AMD64 or 32?10:55
oceankazade, AMD 6410:56
kazadeok, so go here: http://www.webupd8.org/2010/06/ubuntu-control-center-brings-simplicity.html10:56
kazaderun each line in second box line by line (except the first line) into a terminal10:56
kazadethen reboot10:56
kazadeoh wait, don't reboot :)10:56
kazadeonce you've run each command, you should see the Ubuntu Control Centre - probably under the System Tools application menu10:57
kazadein there you can switch to the "high performance graphics" option10:57
kazadethen reboot10:57
kazadethen run glxinfo to check you are now running the ATI card10:57
kazadethen you can install fglrx10:57
oceankazade, but i havent installed fglrx untill now10:57
kazadeinstall fglrx last :)10:58
kazadeeverything will continue working, honest. The built-in ATI driver will take over10:58
kazade(well, everything should continue working :p )10:58
oceankazade, so let me recap.install the one in 64 bit box and then install fglrx and restart, is that the way?10:59
kazadeno! :)10:59
kazadeinstall the 64bit box..10:59
kazadethen run the program it installed10:59
kazadeselect "high performance graphics" in the vga switcher section10:59
kazadereboot10:59
kazaderun glxinfo (check to make sure it says ATI or AMD)10:59
kazadethen if it does (and only if) install fglrx through hardware drivers11:00
kazadewhen you reboot one final time you should have accelerated graphics on the ATI chip11:00
kazadebut you'll always need to run Ubuntu on that chip (e.g. no low-power intel one)11:01
davmor2morning all11:01
oceankazade, yes my machine is installing it now.let me c what happens.  just to make me understand, without installing the FGLRX how does it get the driver for ATI?11:02
kazadeLinux has a built in driver11:02
kazadeit's limited, that's why Ubuntu offers to install the official one11:03
kazadebut it's good enough for most (non-3D) stuff - like running your desktop without Compiz11:03
MartijnVdSonly a little11:03
MartijnVdSyou shouldn't switch until you find a program that doesn't work with the free driver, really11:03
kazadeMartijnVdS, this is an evergreen chip - IIRC there is only 2D accel on it by default11:03
kazadein 10.10 at least11:04
kazadeI may be wrong11:04
MartijnVdSkazade: still.. :)11:04
kazade:)11:04
oceankazade, yes installation has gone through with a message that errors has been encountered.anyway i can see the UCC now.11:05
kazadeok... we might have to deal with those errors, can you pastebin them?11:06
kazadein the UCC you should find a vga switcher (hopefully!)11:06
kazadeocean, there's actually been an update since those instructions, if you install this package you'll get a newer UCC: http://ucc.googlecode.com/files/ucc_051_amd64.deb11:07

kazadeBigRedS, it uses the build in control panel  - so unlikely ;)11:14

oceankazade, where is that switcher in UCC.sorry i cant loacte that11:16

kazadestill not a fix though11:43
kazadebecause rebooting will revert to Intel, and so installing fglrx will cause the same problem11:43
kazadeyou are now using the built-in ATI driver on the ATI chip11:43
ocean_kazade, so is it using ATI now, but my compiz is ot working now after the re selection.11:43

kazadeocean_, if you install fglrx, it won't boot (because it defaults to Intel)11:54
kazadefglrx takes over because installing it creates a file called /etc/X11/xorg.conf11:54
kazadeand it basically says "use the ATI driver" and it does so regardless of whether the ATI card is enabled11:55
MartijnVdSbalor: streaming download works fine here as well11:55
kazadeocean_, what we want, is it to only use the ATI driver if the ATI card is enabled11:55
balorMartijnVdS: thanks.11:55
kazadethat way, you can boot up (with Intel) and use UCC to switch then logout/login and you'll be running FGLRX + ATI + Compiz11:55
ocean_kazade, okay ,11:55
kazadethere are two possible solutions. 1. Specify the xorg.conf only to apply to the ATI card or 2. Always default to the ATI card rather than the Intel one11:56
kazadeuntil the guys in #xorg get back to me, I can't help any more :(11:56
ocean_kazade, okay11:56
ocean_kazade, i can wait11:56
selinuxiumHi popey, who's tricks?11:58
popeyNot me!11:58
MartijnVdSpopey: but it's Friday, almost night!11:59
popey\o/11:59
selinuxiumpopey, Doh... how's tricks...11:59
popeybeen looking for accessories for my Kodak Zi811:59
bigcalmA weekends, popey is also know as Trixy Bell11:59
selinuxiumfinger dyslexia strikes again...11:59
popeyalso 2TB disks for my server11:59
popeytickety boo selinuxium, hows you?11:59
MartijnVdSpopey: basically anything that fits on a standard tripod mount? (did I see that pic correctly? :))11:59
selinuxiumpopey, not too bad at all :)11:59
popeyMartijnVdS: yeah12:00
popeyMartijnVdS: also a micr12:00
popey*mic12:00
popeyselinuxium: happy new year!12:01
selinuxiumbigcalm, A friend of mine runs a club and they have burlesque from time to time... Trixy Bell sounds like one of them... :) Dusty Limits was may fav name..12:01
MartijnVdSpopey: so first you want a "rail" that mounts to the tripod12:01
bigcalm:)12:01
selinuxiumpopey, Happy New Year to you too sir. :)12:01
MartijnVdS+mount12:01
popeyahh, rail12:01
popeydidnt know thats what they're called12:01
popeyand what are the lights called?12:02
MartijnVdSuhr12:02
popeydo they have a special name?12:02
MartijnVdSflash? light? lamp?12:02
popeyits not flash though is it?12:02
screen-xvideo light12:02
screen-xI'd go for..12:02
MartijnVdSwait.. rail seems to be slightly different12:02
popeyyou saw the nixie pixel pic?12:03
MartijnVdSyeah12:03
popeythere was another where you could see from the front with the light on12:03
popeytbh it looked clumsy, the way she was holding it12:03
MartijnVdSbut rail is like a "wide" tripod head that you can move the camera on12:03
popeyright12:03
kazadedoes anyone here have FGRLX enabled using just the checkbox in Hardware Drivers?12:03
kazadeif so, could you pastebin the contents of your (default) /etc/X11/xorg.conf ?12:04
scottussAnyone know of a good gui for NFS, like the one in yast on Suse?12:04
popeyscottuss: what do you want to do with the GUI?12:05

popeyscottuss: what do you want to do with the GUI?12:07
* popey finds himself looking at home made steadicams for his zi812:07
bigcalmpopey: have your graze deliveries stabalised yet?12:08
scottussbe able to set nfs shares to automount really12:08
scottusssomething like directory utility on the mac12:08
popeybigcalm: ask me tomorrow :)12:08

screen-xpopey: chickens?12:09

scottussyeah I could I suppose12:09
screen-xpopey: chickens have a stabilising reflex http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/30/chicken-based-camera-stabilization-more-effective-than-the-human/12:10
MartijnVdSpopey: chickens are the best steadycams12:10
scottussBut if the share isn't available, the system wont choke at startup will it?12:10
bigcalmDepends if you rely upon that share12:10
scottussbigcalm, rely.. in what way?12:11
scottusssomething at boot that needs the share to be there?12:11
BigRedSwell, if it's /home and you've apache logs there, if the share's not there apache wont start, for example12:12
MartijnVdSwho stores logs in /home?!12:12
scottussah I see, no no, it isn't mapped to home or anything like that12:12
scottusslol yeah I was thinking that12:12
scottussI suppose you could stick /var on an NFS share, if you're crazy?12:13
jpdsMartijnVdS: Hosting providers that want to gave customers easy access to logen?12:13
AlanBellpopey: if you want to borrow a chicken for a steadycam just ask :)12:13
popey:)12:13
davmor2czajkowski: here have a patronising pat on the head for a change12:14
MartijnVdSjpds: those hosting providers should learn the power of symlinks12:14
scottusshmm I might go down the fstab route then. I tried autofs but that was a PITA12:14
MartijnVdSjpds: and/or chroots12:14
ocean_kazade, any luck?12:17
kazadeocean_, no nothing12:17
kazadenow I'm thinking that we could run a script on boot that sets the ATI card as active before the desktop starts12:17
kazadeyou'd be stuck on ATI though permanently, but at least you'd have decent graphics performance12:17
ocean_kazade, i had a read on the launchpad.it seems that this bg has not been fixed along with the grub issue12:18
kazadeit looks like the vga switching works fine if you only use the built-in open source drivers (you have to log out and back in, but it "works")12:18
kazadeI haven't seen anyone have any success with fglrx though12:18
ocean_kazade, now the machine is more silent and not heating up. i presume it will start heating up again when i restart12:20
kazadeyeah, it'll revert to Intel and if that was causing the issue then yes it will12:20
kazadethe other option you have is stick to the current situation, but update the open source drivers12:20
kazade(rather than using fglrx)12:20
czajkowskidavmor2: oi!12:21
kazadeocean_, this PPA has stable updates for the graphics stuff: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates12:21
kazadeit should be "safe" and might fix your overheating and might enable compiz on ATI (not sure)12:21
selinuxiumczajkowski, oi! :)12:22
kazadeocean_, there is an even more "bleeding edge" ppa for those drivers, but they will likely break at some point (if not immediately), if you are brave the ppa is here: https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers12:22
jpdsczajkowski: 'oi' is hi in Portugese I believe.12:22
kazadeocean_, but I wouldn't advise that latter one12:22
selinuxiumczajkowski, Or as they say in deepest, darkest Essex... Oi Oi!!!12:23
selinuxiumHmmm... Hungry o'clock...12:23
selinuxiumNando's it is!12:24
ocean_kazade, I will go for the stable one now. could U give me the command line to add that ppa and install.12:24
ocean_pls12:24
kazadeocean_: sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade12:24
kazadepaste that whole line12:25
kazadethat'll 1.) add the PPA 2.) Update your package lists 3.) upgrade all the components, possibly installing new packages if needed12:25
davmor2czajkowski: what you said you didn't want prodding every day :P12:25
ocean_kazade, iam gon to go.thanks a lot for ur help. i am more aware of this issue now.12:27

Azelphurto my knowledge there is no open proxy on my server :S12:37
MartijnVdSAzelphur: ZNC? what's that?12:39
screen-xAzelphur: is it an open irc proxy?12:39
Azelphurno, ZNC is not an open proxy and I use it on many networks including this one12:39
AzelphurIt requires a username and password to connect, otherwise it disconnects you.12:39
MartijnVdSmaybe they're more strict?12:39
MartijnVdSwhat happens if you put it on a different port?12:39
AzelphurZNC is on a strange nonstandard port12:40
AzelphurZNC Is an advanced IRC bouncer which allows for Multiple clients (Connect as many times as you like under one nick) Playback last few lines in channels when you connect, Playback missed pm's, Auto nickserv identify, Auto join all channels, Push notifications to Colloquy, and more ( http://en.znc.in/wiki/Modules )12:40
Azelphur:p12:40
MartijnVdSAzelphur: have it listen on localhost only, then ssh -L to get the port forwarded to your localhost, then connect to _that_ :)12:40
MartijnVdSAzelphur: no open proxy :)12:41
Azelphurhaha I can't do that, there are many other users using my ZNC besides me12:41
Azelphurbut, ZNC isn't an open proxy, it requires a username and password12:41
Azelphurthere's nothing open about it12:41
MartijnVdSAzelphur: apparently, mozilla thinks otherwise12:41
AzelphurI guess I need to find some ircops on mozilla12:41
neptunewhen a program loads an "image" what exactly is this image? googled it but cant find the answer12:48
kazadeneptune, an image as in a picture?12:49
neptuneno12:50
screen-xneptune: image can mean lots of things.. could be a table of values representing pixels (bitmap), could be mathematical description of various shapes (svg), could a copy of a disk, or CD12:50
neptuneexecutables load images with code when they execute12:50
neptunelike shared objects12:50
neptunelike DLLs12:50
fr0styyHello everyone! :)12:50
neptunebut i can't find a proper definition12:50
popeydefintion of what?12:51
neptuneof image12:51
popeywhere are you seeing this?12:52
popeywhat context?12:52
neptunea program loads an image12:53
neptunebut not picture12:53
popeyyes, i understand your description, I'm asking where you see that phrase12:53
popey"loading image"12:53
neptune"image instrumentation"12:54
popeywhere are you seeing that?12:54
neptuneok let me show you12:54
neptuneImage instrumentation lets the Pintool inspect and instrument an entire image, IMG, when it is first loaded. A Pintool can walk the sections, SEC, of the image, the routines, RTN, of a section, and the instructions, INS of a routine.12:55
popeyan image is a representation of something12:55
popeynormally people see "image" and think 'visual representation' i.e. a picture visible with your eyeballs12:56
popeybut it doesn't have to be12:56
fr0styyIm in a very, very, very bad situation...I have Ubuntu 10.10 netboock  remix and Back Track 4 running as a dual boot, and Im sure you've heard about  the error 15 problem.12:56
popeyit could be an image (copy) of a disk, an image of the memory of a computer12:56
fr0styyWe could IM so as not to flood this room with 2 people having problems. :)12:56
popeyhardly a flood fr0styy12:56
neptunepopey i gave you the context12:56
neptunewhat does it mean in that context12:56
fr0styyi think he means that: Where are you seeing this error? In the terminal? what file is it that you have a problem with. Am I correct?12:57
popeyno fr0styy12:57
fr0styyi came in late, what problem is he he/she having?12:57
popeynone, dont worry fr0styy12:58
fr0styyok :)12:58
brobostigonafternoonings all.12:58
fr0styyhiyas!12:58
popeyneptune: in this instance it means a representation of the program and memory whilst running12:58
popeyneptune: it's just the word the developers chose to use to mean "the program and associated memory loaded by pintool"12:59
fr0styySo as I was saying people: anyone have the error 15 when dual booting before?12:59
fr0styybecause...12:59
fr0styy have Ubuntu 10.10 netboock remix and Back Track 4 running as a dual boot, and  Im sure you've heard about the error 15 problem.12:59
popeyfr0styy: reinstall grub?12:59
fr0styyok, thats what I wanted to ask. I found a guide to re-istall grub, however, Im afraid of loosing my data13:00
fr0styyor is it not an issue?13:00
fr0styybecause i cant really see my files (even with live ubuntu usb)13:00
neptuneok thx13:01
popey!grub13:01
lubotu3grub is the default boot manager for Ubuntu releases before 9.10 (Karmic). Lost GRUB after installing Windows? See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestoreGrub - GRUB how-tos: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GrubHowto - See !grub2 for Karmic onwards.13:01

popeysee that link13:01
fr0styyIll check it out, thank you13:02
fr0styyIll relay feed-back :)13:02
AzelphurI made a video to demonstrate my overclocked HTC Desire Z http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6_Nur_3JJw :)13:03
screen-xAzelphur: the Z has too much battery life for you?13:04
Azelphurscreen-x: haha, I offset the overclocking by setting up a profile to underclock to 200mhz when the screen is off13:04
Azelphurall the perks, none of the loss :)13:04
screen-xsounds good :)13:04
screen-xMy wife's htc desire could probably do with underclocking, its plenty fast enough, but has a shocking battery life.13:05
Azelphurit lasts a decent amount of time, playstation emulation does drain it reasonably fast though13:05
AzelphurI reckon 2-4 hours of playstation :)13:05
Azelphurscreen-x: pretty easy to do if you get it rooted13:05
screen-xAzelphur: video makes me want to adjust my glasses, but I'm not wearing any :(13:07
Azelphurhaha13:07
DJonesscreen-x: is that a desire or a desire hd with the bad battery life, my wifes desire hd was horrific until i removed the htc sense sync account & then added it again.  She was getting about 4-5 hours life before it died, now by the end of the day, its at about 65%13:07
popeytwo whole minutes before the race actually starts13:07
popeylooks sweet once running13:07
popeyalso, you suck at driving :)13:08
Azelphurpopey: haha, it wasn't easy driving I had to hold the phone at a strange angle for the camera13:08
popeynice vid13:08
popeyheh13:08
AzelphurI do get a bit better about half way through though13:08
Azelphurty :p13:08
screen-xsome nice sideways action :)13:08
Azelphuralso auto focus on the new webcam is a bit crap13:08
screen-xdriving games are hard without some sort of analogue input13:09
Azelphurscreen-x: haha, I grew up in the generation of digital controllers for racing so I'm used to it :)13:10
screen-xDJones: it's an original desire, it struggles to get to the end of the day13:10
screen-xpeppermint tea time13:11
DJonesscreen-x: Right, thought it was worth mentioning the solution that worked for my wife anyway, we found that initially, the calendar was constantly using the battery on her HD, then after updates that went to a normal level, but the Android OS was constantly using the battery, sorting the HTC Sense syncing fixed that though13:13
* popey pokes AlanBell with a mail to the list13:14
screen-xDJones: thanks, I'll check there aren't any unnecessary thing syncing.13:14
DJonesscreen-x: It wasn't so much unnecessary syncing, just a problem with the setup, removing & re-adding the htc sense sync worked for her13:15
screen-xDJones: ok13:15
fr0styyHello gyus, im trying to locate some data (I have partitioning problem, and I aparently need to update grub) but there seems to be a problem... I mounted the partition that has Ubuntu and can access pretty much all the directories, however, I cannot seem to locate any items in my home folder...is this normal? should I proceed with updating grub from the live usb with no worries?13:18
fr0styyThe only reason I am asking this is because I have my desertation due soon...and it would be quite the pain to restart most of my work.. :(13:19
Azelphurdid you use a separate partition for /home?13:19
fr0styyno, I had ubuntu as a single partition, but added Backtrack 4 later on. After booting, I get the error15 msg.13:20
fr0styyAnd obviously cannot access ubuntu unless I use the USB13:20
fr0styyDid I dmg the data? *cries*13:21
Azelphurhmm, seems odd that the entire home would disappear13:21
Azelphurmaybe it's a permissions thing.13:21
fr0styyshould I try sudo in terminal? If I do it will I be able to see it in the GUI?13:21
fr0styysorry to be a pain, but im a week old newbe :)13:22
Azelphurfr0styy: could try gksudo nautilus13:22
Azelphurbut be very careful with it13:22
* Azelphur will probably be berated for recommending that one :p13:22
fr0styycareful in what way? :O13:22
kvarleyfr0styy: Running nautilus (file manager) as root gives you permisson to delete even the important bits of the operating system13:23
fr0styyi see ... ok got it. Tread with caution..13:24
Azelphurindeed :)13:25
fr0styynope...nothing in home...im getting this notification13:26

fr0styyactually now that I think about it...13:30
fr0styyshouldnt the partition be in ext4?13:31
screen-xfr0styy: are you looking at the root partition from backtrack?13:31
fr0styythe media im looking at has type vfat for some reason :O13:31
* imexil Struggels with an annoying cups update configuration lock up13:32
imexili.e., Setting up cups (1.4.4-6ubuntu2.3) ... just sits there and does not proceed13:32
fr0styyi thought I was looking at ubuntu... what was the command for list of partitions please? :(13:33
brobostigonfr0styy: sudo fdisk -l13:33
fr0styyty13:33
brobostigonypure welcome fr0styy :)13:34
* imexil thinks that the cups configuration likes to trigger the display of some input window that never appears and therefore the configuration script just sits there and waits for input. 13:35
fr0styyhmmm let me try mounting another...13:35
imexilAnyone seen this before AND found a solution?13:35
jpdsimexil: sudo pkill -9 dpkg; sudo rm -vf /var/lib/dpkg/info/cups.*; sudo dpkg --configure -a13:35
fr0styythe command for mounting was mount (disk name) -mnt     right?13:36
imexiljpds:13:36
jpdsimexil: Hello.13:38
imexiljpds: sorry wanted to write a thank you but got distracted by more errormessages ;13:39
jpdsFun.13:39
* imexil is trying to sort them out13:39
jpdsBut that should get cups going again.13:39
screen-xfr0styy: its usually "mount device mount-point"13:40
fr0styyty13:40
fr0styypoint refers to? :)13:41
imexiljpds: Do you know if this will now happen each time there is a cups update?13:41
jpdsimexil: No idea, happened to me randomly once.13:41
imexilsame here13:41
imexiltoday was the second time13:41
fr0styyscreen-x: sorry, but what does point refer to? :)13:42
imexiljpds: So I couldn't remember how I resolved it last time.13:42
screen-xfr0styy: the mount point is the place in the directory tree that you wish to attach the filesystem on the device to.13:42
screen-xso if your home dir lives on /dev/sda2, you'd issue mount /dev/sda2 /home13:43
fr0styyscreen-x: Aha! mount point as in one word! lol13:44
fr0styyScreen-x: ty :D13:44
imexiljpds: Anyway. It's solved now. The additional error messages were just a result of a couple of lock files still being present. Removing those and then reissueing the command you gave did it. Thanks.13:44
jpdsimexil: No problem.13:45
jpdsI should of remembered sudo fuser -k /var/lib/dpkg/lock - for the lock file.13:45
imexilit were more that that ;)13:46

shaunoscreen-x: fun complications with my greeencard.  Left me in a fun position where I'm no longer a lawful resident, but not elligible for the standard 90day 'visa waiver' / tourist visa.17:59
MartijnVdSshauno: \o/ bureaucracy17:59
shaunoso I either go thru an incredibly awkward process trying to apply for a visa before I travel (while the embassy here tell me I don't need one, USCIS will turn me away at the border without one).18:00
screen-xshauno: yeah, that sort of thing is far to complicated and gets ugly quickly :(18:00
* brobostigon flings windows cd's at bureaucracy for shauno 18:00

ocean_hi guys i need some help to connect to wifi with my ubuntu 10.10 64 bit please. the wifi card in my machine seems to be RT 30390 which apparently has got some problems on ubuntu 10.1018:02
screen-xright I'm off, have a good weekend everyone, and special mention for those who have to work :(18:06
popeyo/18:07
shaunomy favourite gripe with the whole greencard mess, is that I know quite a few people living in the US illegally, and trouble-free.  went thru reams of paper (and a significant amount of currency) doing it properly, then got fouled because I spent more than 3 consecutive months out of the country.18:10
shaunothe 20 year 'black mark' I earned for that is exactly the same as an illegal would get if caught.  balmy.18:10

pr0ph3tI'm having some problems with a couple of rfswitches that have not been implemented in the driver I am using, more specifically those for the 3g modem, for bluetooth and wifi all is good. Is there anyway I could set them up without recompiling the kernel and applying the patch?18:15
pr0ph3tali1234, hey I don't think the patch has been merged in 2.6.37 yet :(18:15

awilkinsgord there's a resize option in the rclick menu... I think it's not that good, but sometimes it's better than finding these new narrow window edges18:37
awilkinsgord, Or was the title bar not available on the window in question?18:38
Adriannom|droid-Lo. How do i kill network manager temporarily?18:54
Adriannom|droid-Sudo service network-manager stop returns "stop: unknown instance:"18:56
brobostigonAdriannom|droid-: sudo /etc/init.d/network-manager stop18:56
Adriannom|droid-Tried that brob, it lectures me on using the service command but doesn't say whether it succeeded or failed (or even tried) nm still present18:57
gordi really hate the qt file chooser, its like using windows from 10 years ago18:59
gordawilkins, nope, i just didn't think of that :)18:59
brobostigoni thought you can directly use the init.d name in service command, so i dont know.18:59
Adriannom|droid-:(18:59
brobostigonAdriannom|droid-: i am on debian sid here though, so there might be a few differences.19:00
Adriannom|droid-Yeah19:00
gordbrobostigon, Adriannom|droid-, its upstart now. just "sudo stop network-manager"19:00
Adriannom|droid-Weird how service won't stop it though19:00
Adriannom|droid-Gord: returns "stop: unknown instance: "19:01
brobostigongord: interesting,19:01
gordsounds like network manager isn't running then19:01
gordwhich makes it hard to stop19:01
Adriannom|droid-Aha, the icon was still there and fooled me19:01
gordor upstart *thinks* its not running maybe ;)19:01
Azelphurthe logic is clearly strong with the daily mail, Firefox dethrones IE as europes most popular web browser, so we'll show a picture of some chick with an iPad running safari. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-1344263/Firefox-dethrones-Internet-Explorer-Europes-popular-web-browser.html19:02
Adriannom|droid-You're right, it's dead19:02
Adriannom|droid-Thanks :)19:02
Azelphur>.<19:02
brobostigongord: is "stop" meant to be a seperate app, as i cant pull anything about it.19:02
gordbrobostigon, its part of upstart19:02
gordyou have start, stop, restart. maybe more19:03
brobostigongord: let me do some research,19:03
brobostigonupstart seem to be present in debian sid.19:06
brobostigonand i dont have it installed.19:07
gordi wouldn't know how easy it is to make debian use upstart19:08
brobostigongord: i dont eaither, hence iamdoing my reserch,19:08
gordi would suggest you backup important files before trying though ;)19:08
brobostigonagreed, yes, :)19:09
Adriannom|droid-Trying to get into failsafe mode on my wrt54gl. The dmz light is flashing rapidly, and i have a machine with a static ip connected to port 1. Problem is, ping 198.192.1.1 returns "destination host unreachable". The ping works fine if the router is booted normally.  Any ideas?  using ubuntu 10.04 and NetworkManager is stopped19:11
Adriannom|droid-that should be 192.168.1.1 btw :s19:35

cbx333heheh20:27
cbx333i want to encode a video as deinterlaced20:27
cbx333as it is interlaced dvd at the moment20:28
gordhandbrake automatically detects interlaced content and attempts to deinterlace it20:28
cbx333hmm20:28
cbx333apparently not the version i have20:28
cbx333lemme see20:28
gordtheres a preview picture button somewhere, press that20:28
cbx333yeh20:29
cbx333found it20:29
gordwhen that opens there is an options box that has the deinterlace/other thing option, the other thing automatically detects, the deinterlace option always deinterlaces content20:29
gordthe end result will still look bad, but there is nothing you can do about that, the interlacing process irreversibly destroyed picture quality20:30

pr0ph3thow can I point out politely that a driver should be merged with mainline? I can't recompile everytime I want to update kernel!20:46
bigcalmDoes everybody need this driver?20:47
pr0ph3tI mean I know Linus is a very busy man, but I can't keep going like this :P20:47
pr0ph3teverybody with an asus laptop20:47
pr0ph3tbigcalm, it's a bugfixed version of an already implemented driver20:47
bigcalmI see20:47
pr0ph3tthere was 3g support missing20:48
pr0ph3tit has been there for over three months now and kernel 2.6.37 doesn't feature it yet20:48
jacobwI doubt that Linus has much to do with the integration of drivers in to the mainline kernel20:54
