[23:46] dendrite: that's the plan [23:47] sounds good. one sec [23:47] yea no problems there [23:47] dendrite: well, strange. you can just save the new config to a file in your home dir in nvidia-settings [23:47] ok i'll try that [23:48] dendrite: then copy that file to /etc/X11/xorg.conf with sudo [23:48] dendrite: that should work [23:48] ah ok [23:48] dendrite: backup the old file [23:48] dendrite: before you overwrite it [23:48] saving xorg.conf to my home directory isn't allowed either [23:49] must be something with the gui [23:49] dendrite: hmm [23:49] yea lol.. [23:49] I *could* just manually edit xorg. but I need to look around to see how to setup dual monitors correctly [23:49] wait, that tool doesn't save an xorg.conf file, does it? [23:50] it saves an nvidia-settings rc file [23:50] i was pretty sure it saved a xorg.conf file === rtdos is now known as rtdos_AFK === nhandler is now known as Guest64928 [23:50] dendrite: if you click on "save current configuration" (i assume that's what you do) [23:50] torch: yes that's what i do [23:50] dendrite: you get a gtk save file dialog that suggests .nvidia-settings-rc as file name [23:51] dendrite: that's nothing to do with xorg.conf. that's for running the nvidia-settings tool at login [23:51] hm. i'm not getting anything with nvidia-settings.rc [23:51] dendrite: ah, and there's "safe to X configuration file" under "x server display configuration" [23:51] dendrite: did you try that one? [23:52] dendrite: so you're actually trying that one? [23:52] but i am able to see a preview of the xorg.conf file before i actually save it. I copied that to my clipboard and I'm just gonna to put in xorg with an editor [23:52] yes i tried that one [23:52] dendrite: and then it complains it needs privileges? [23:52] dendrite: and asks for a password? [23:53] no it just says it couldn't parse the "/etc/X11/xorg.conf" file or "/home/$USER/xorg.conf" [23:53] dendrite: hmm, aha === _RaNdY is now known as RaNdY [23:54] gonna restart X. i think i got it brb === RaNdY is now known as Guest92725 === nhandler_ is now known as nhandler [23:56] i need a bit of help or if someone can tell me if its not possible with this distro..im trying to install ubuntu server 10.10 from a usb stick but the installation halts saying it cant find the cd..any ideas how to fix this or should i give up now and try a diffrent distro ?? [23:58] Torch: well it worked. copying the preview xorg.conf file into a new xorg.conf (after backing up original) seems to be working. now i have dual monitors yay! [23:58] dendrite: very good. [23:59] just wish i didn't have to do all that. using the gui should be able to work as in gnome under 10.10 [23:59] dendrite: blame nvidia, not KDE [23:59] yea. [23:59] dendrite: and you're right, of course. [23:59] dendrite: it absolutely should work
