szhI just installed Lubuntu, and I love it so far. The only problem is that the volume is way too loud, even when I set it to about 1%.00:01
Timo_szh: can you go to the terminal and then to00:05
Timo_'alsamixer', then try to lower the volume thetre00:05
szhTimo: Which column should I change?00:06
szh"Master" is already low00:07
szhTimo: I lowered "Master M" and now it works! Thanks a lot!00:08
Timo_no problem! Enjoy Lubuntu ;)00:09
Timo_if I may make a suggestion (or call it advertising / propaganda :D) if you want a fully featured and powerful music player00:09
Timo_try Gnome Music Player Client (it's not dependent on gnome) www.gmpclient.org00:09
Timo_it's really good \ using less resources than the standard music player in lubuntu but has way more functionality :)00:10
szhOkay. I'll try that out. Music helps me work better.00:10
Timo_hehe - I'm also playing music now, I loveit :)00:11
Timo_oh and if you like a chat, #lubuntu-offtopic is a great channel to hang out. A lot of nice guys who help you out with all sorts of things + are nice chasp to have a chat with00:11

gnewbHello02:24
gnewbHello03:11
* KM0201 is interested in this solution :)03:11
gnewbHave you tried the Alternate install?03:11
bencahillgnewb: yep03:12
bencahillKM0201: lol :)03:12
gnewbOK, have you tried !#?03:12
KM0201crunchbang?... lol, thats your solution03:12
KM0201lol03:12
gnewbIs a hardware test thing03:12
KM0201gnewb: if it has faild on ubuntu, and lubuntu.. i'd say the chance of failure w/ crunchbang, which runs on the ubuntu kernel, is a near certainty.03:13
gnewbJust to see if the hardware is correct. I run !# and Lubuntu on my old Desktop, is flawless and the responce times are amazing.03:14
gnewbNo, !# is now on the Debian kernel.03:14
KM0201gnewb: now that i wasn't aware of.03:14
gnewbStatler 1003:14
KM0201i still don't think thats the way to go about this though...03:14
KM0201i think he's doing the right thing by downloading Fedor03:15
KM0201*fedora03:15
gnewbFedora or PC-BSD03:15
gnewbThey are both rather heavy weights.03:15
bencahillKM0201: i suppose if fedora works, then i'll get experience with it as well, always a good thing :)03:15
KM0201bencahill: fedora is OK if you like the RH side of things03:16
bencahillKM0201: i'm still very new to linux (used win all my life), so i don't really have much of an opinion either way...my brother is a rhce, and he still installed ubuntu on our proxy server (over fc, which is what it was back then)03:17
gnewbCentOS is a good distro, there are many lightweight ones, I only suggested PC-BSD because of its almost no translation in the switch.03:18
gnewbI like this Lubuntu, am liking it more every day.03:19

charliemacHow does Ubuntu/Lubuntu compare with Knoppix, RedHat, DSL (DamSmalLinux), and Mint?08:55
bioterroryou tell us09:02
bioterrorlubuntu works really closely with LXDE, so we have a advantage09:02
charliemacI09:03
charliemacI've never tried any of these, I just want it both very efficient and very basic, with plenty of room to expand/enhance/develop with more capabilities as I decide I want it to do more.09:05
bioterrorcharliemac, you have to try those and choose which one is best for your usage09:17
bioterrorI like mcfeast, someone likes whopper and another one likes bigmac09:17
bioterrorand fourth one likes quarter pounder with cheese :D09:18
head_victimI use dsl for pc's older than P4s, I use Lubuntu on P4s and Gnome Ubuntu on newer than P4s.09:23
charliemacMobile IntelĀ® PentiumĀ® 4 Processor 532 supporting HT Technology  (1M Cache, 3.06 GHz, 533 MHz FSB) is the processer on my notebook.09:24
head_victimWell that would do great on Lubuntu09:27
charliemac32 bit or 64 bit?09:32
head_victimDepends, is the CPU 32 or 64 bit? If the cpu is 64 bit then no reason not to use it.09:34
charliemacCan Pentium 4 532 HT support the 64-bit ubuntu?09:38
head_victimNot sure sorry mate, I will have to google it.09:40
head_victimAccording to http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=27368 it's only 32bit09:40
charliemacThat's true...  But <https://help.ubuntu.com/community/32bit_and_64bit> seems to suggest that a Pentium 4 "Prescott" works...09:49
charliemacHow does OpenSUSE with LXDE compare with Lubuntu?09:54
head_victimcharliemac: well try it, if it doesn't work then it's definitely 3210:18
charliemachead_victim:  Thanks, that makes sense ;)10:20
charliemacWell since I've already downloaded the 32, is there any way to double check the processor's identity within the OS/DE?10:21
head_victimGo to a terminal and type "lshw -class cpu" without the " and look for what it says beside width10:38
Ak1raok so i'm pretty sure lxdm won't allow for switching between multiple runnign sessions between users, but can lxdm be setup similar to xdm in taht you might create as many login screens on different VT's as you want? :)10:55
Ak1raif you answer me, PLEASE message vivaceious instead as my non-sleeping computer is on irc on that name, but NOT in #lubuntu :-/10:57
head_victimSo how do I put an icon on the Lubuntu panel so that when it's clicked it runs a bash script?11:51
charliemac_can I install Lubuntu in such a way that It overwrites windows through some sort of boot disk??11:52
head_victimcharliemac_: it depends what option you choose when you're installing Lubuntu. If you haven't done it before and want to get rid of everything when it asks about partitioning choose "guided, use entire disk" but only if you're sure you don't need ANYTHING on that drive EVER again11:53
charliemac_How do I get to that point where it will let me choose?11:54
bioterrorinstall11:54
bioterroryou will see :D11:54
charliemac_I'm not sure how to begin the installation... Currently my laptop is setting up windows xp - detecting and installing devices such as keyboard and mouse, something I don't want it to.11:56
head_victimcharliemac_: some info at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu/Documentation has links to the alternate installer informatino as well11:56
head_victimbioterror: any idea on the panel icon to launch a bash script?11:56
bioterrorput that script into /usr/local/bin11:56
bioterrorand point .desktop -file to it11:56
bioterror?11:56
bioterrordoes it make any sense? :D11:58
head_victimIs that on the panel or desktop though11:58
bioterrordepends11:58
bioterroryou can put it to panel?11:58
head_victimI don't get what you're saying theer11:59
head_victimthere*11:59
charliemac_I somehow began restoring WinXP on my laptop, whereas I wanted to reformat the hard drive using Lubuntu.  Is there any way I can abort this proccess ("Application Installer" currently underway...)11:59
bioterrorput that script into /usr/local/bin/11:59
bioterrorand make a foooo.desktop to /usr/share/applications/11:59
head_victimcharliemac_: if you're trying to install Lubuntu you should have the Lubuntu CD in the drive not the windows one12:00
head_victimbioterror: OOHHH and then add the application launcher?12:01
charliemac_I have no CD's in the drive, it was supposed to load from the "Restoration" HD partition12:01
bioterrorhead_victim, yeah12:01
bioterrorhead_victim, that's what i would try to do :P12:01
charliemac_lol, sorry to interrupt!  ;)12:01
head_victimAh ok sounded like a bit of hassle but if it's the only way that's cool I'll give it a shot12:01
bioterrorbut I've been too lazy to add my urxvt to panel12:01
head_victimcharliemac_: no dramas I'm trying to set up this Lubuntu for my wife12:02
JoeMaverickSettdo you guys experience change of workspace when you use scroll buton on the mouse even when you're in a window and trying to scroll that application?12:02
head_victimJoeMaverickSett: I did for AGES, no idea what fixed it.12:02
head_victimI played around with a few rc settings and it's gone12:02
JoeMaverickSetthead_victim: :|12:02

JoeMaverickSetthead_victim: hehe, ok. i'll check. :D12:03
JoeMaverickSettcharliemac: insert the lubuntu CD, restart the pc, press F12, boot from CD ROM. install Lubuntu, use the whole partition if you don't need Win XP. :D12:06
charliemacWhat if I'm trying to install ubuntu from the previously external hard drive which now has Lubuntu's ISO unpacked as the contents of the recovery partition?12:08

head_victimbioterror: got it working but no icon12:31
head_victimI can live without that for now12:31
bioterrorwell12:31

bioterror:D12:31
head_victimIs it just in the foo.desktop and if so is it like "Icon=/path/to/icon" or is that too easy12:31
bioterrorIcon=lxterminal12:32
head_victimCan I specify any file as the icon?12:33
bioterrorwhat ever you like12:33
head_victimso if I just put the part to the icon in the "Icon=/path/to/icon" it should work?12:33
bioterrorhmmm12:33
head_victimor does it specify a place already and I just have to pick one of them or add my icon to that location??12:34
bioterrorif you look other .desktop files12:34
bioterrorit doesnt specify a path12:34
head_victimnope but I tried "Icon=/path/to/icon" and it works12:39
head_victimI'm awesome or something :D12:39
head_victimAll this is exciting because it means my wife will be using Lubuntu (I've been trying for 5 years or more to get her to use anything *buntu but she has resisted)12:40
JoeMaverickSetthead_victim: yay! :D /me can't convert my sis or friends. :|12:41

bioterrorszh, try alsamixer12:51

szhThe sound is much quieter, but it's at the same level as it was before.12:52
szhI need to make it much louder for it to be even a normal volume.12:53
szhAlso, how can I change the default channel on the volume control in the bottom right of the screen to Master Mono?12:55
head_victimTo me linux is about being able to fiddle with stuff until it's how I like it. My wife just doesn't care about playing with it all.13:00
bioterrorfor me linux is just fixing broken things :D13:02
JoeMaverickSett:D13:02

charliemacWhere do I find the correct  data required to run the Md5Sum on the Lubuntu 10.10 ISO?15:44
jorisI am amazed this encryption home directory issue is not an issue for more people. Lubuntu seems perfect for netbooks and an encrypted home directory makes so much sense15:44
JoeMaverickSettcharliemac: do you mean the md5sum of the lubuntu ISO? if so it's at; https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/DocumentationHelp/CheckCD15:48
JoeMaverickSettcharliemac: according to the guide on how to check the md5sum earlier, key in the md5sum from the site i gave you above in "compare" box i believe.15:49
charliemacI downloaded the Lubuntu ISO from Lubuntu.net, but when I sent that to WinMd5Sum, it gave me a different value than the 098254aeb0153b10bcfce948c43a0df6 which is listed on the site to which you referred me.15:51
JoeMaverickSettcharliemac: look at the above link i gave you, if you downloded 10.10, i believe it's same, i could even match yours and the one on the website.15:53
vivaceiousis it possible to set lxdm up in such a way that would mimic the functioning of xdm in starting login sessions on multiple VT's ?15:55
charliemacJoeMaverickSett:  I looked at both of the links you shared with me <https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM>, and <https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/DocumentationHelp/CheckCD>, but I must be oversimplifying things because when I sent the ISO that i got from lubuntu.net to winmd5sum the answer was "fef33677921f6cb8969147fb4d034af8"15:58
JoeMaverickSettcharliemac: hhmm, okie i read the above sum as yours, sorry.15:59
charliemacWhich would be the correct sum?  I haven't been able to locate the correct value as a means of comparison/confirmation.16:00
JoeMaverickSettcharliemac: where did you download that iso from?16:01
charliemacThis was right at <Lubuntu.net>16:01
charliemacAnd it took around an hour to download completely, is that typical?16:03
charliemacI got my ISO striagt from Lubuntu.net, and it's not a match to the corresponding md5sum at <http://people.ubuntu.com/~gilir/md5sum.txt>...  :[16:35
phillwcharliemac: you are always better using the torrent link. I have nothing to do with lubuntu.net, so have no idea what link they have. The torrent link is pretty darn quick, my server is the secondary source - but that is somewhat throttled as it is a shared server.18:34
jorisI asked this already earlier but since I don't get it fixed. Are there people here running lubuntu with an encrypted home directory?19:51
MrChrisDruifjoris: I believe there is a mention about that on either the wiki or lubuntu's site :)19:52
MrChrisDruifIt's was one of lubuntu known bugs afaik...19:52
jorisoh really.. I didn't see that, thanks!19:53

ubot5Launchpad bug 1 in Ubuntu "Microsoft has a majority market share" [Critical,In progress] https://launchpad.net/bugs/122:55
cphuntington97so I installed lubuntu recently...23:00
cphuntington97all around amazing release23:02
cphuntington97just one catch... I installed to "use entire disk" on sdc23:02
cphuntington97and yet, bootloader was installed on sda23:03
cphuntington97I was not prompted or anything - is this normal behavior?23:03
cphuntington97and if so ,what is an appropriate way to voice my disapproval?23:04
cphuntington97anyone?23:33
kristian-aalborgcphuntington97: I don't know if it's default behaviour, but I think you can salvage it from a live cd?23:41
cphuntington97it's fine...23:41
cphuntington97but I just don't think it's good behavior23:41
kristian-aalborgI've had grub act weird as well23:42
cphuntington97I've been trying tons of distros, and each one has explicitly asked where to put the bootloader23:42
cphuntington97this is the first time I wasn't asked, warned, nothing... it just went right to sda23:42
kristian-aalborgI'm not a developer, so I can't really comment on what's a feature and what's a bug :)23:42
cphuntington97one of the catches is, on my netbook, grub is in rescue mode when the linux boot partition (which is on an sd card) is not in the machine. this was formally an xp partition but the bootloader was overwritten. it will still boot with grub so long as the sd card with linux is in the machine. it's minor inconvenience - I'll run fixboot and fixmbr on it, and it'll be back to normal. but my main gripe is not so much with grub's be23:44
cphuntington97it was a big surprise to have sda overwritten after an install to sdc23:45
cphuntington97should I file a bug report? it's probably not meant to be a bug, it's probably meant to help clueless users... but in my opinion the installer has overstepped its bounds23:47
cphuntington97but thanks for responding kristian-aalborg23:54
kristian-aalborgcphuntington97: I guess you could post it on ubuntuforums?23:57
kristian-aalborgphillw: ping?23:57
