AlanBellor at least sympathy and a cup of tea09:52
czajkowskimattt: yup there is09:55
IndyBasically when I install the nvidia driver Linux just boots up to the login screen. It just doesn't setup the nvidia driver. The way to get back to the GUI is to delete xorg.conf file. This puts me into a very low GUI mode. I've been sort of regretting ever buying the Sony because I didn't realise nvidia had driver issues09:57
BigRedSI ranted all over IRC yesterday about my ATi problems and Martin came along and fixed it all for me :)09:57
IndyI just don't get it with nvidia. How come their windows version works but Linux doesn't09:57
IndyHow can I spread the good word about Linux when I can't get my damn pc to work09:59

davmor2MooDoo: You on mornings again how did you wrangle that deal?10:17
n1md4It's okay.  The interface isn't great, but functional enough.  Motion-detect on multiple feeds requires a lot of CPU time.10:18
MooDoodavmor2: it's a two week shift pattern, 9 - 5:30 for two weeks, then earlies, then weekends and finally lates :S10:18

moreatigran did you look at both tabs (On Mains Power, On Battery Power)? What is 'Put display to sleep when incative' set to on each of those tabs?14:41
gran"never" on mains and an hour with battery14:43
granits running on mains now14:43
granso shouldn't have come on14:43
moreatigran: then your settings are right, you may suffering the bug that DJones mentioned14:44
moreatigran: (Do you mean 'screen is going to sleep' by 'come on', the term is confusing me)14:45
grannah sorry, display turns off and to turn it back on i have to put in the password every time14:45
granits not hibernating or anything14:46
DJonesgran: Have a look at this link http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=341617 There is a section to add to the xorg file that can stop the bug I was thinking of14:47
granthanks mate14:47
DJonesThat talks about kubuntu, but I had the same bug on ubuntu as well14:47
DJonesAparently the bug was to do with beryl/xgl so it could be something comepletely different now that beryl is compiz, but could be worth checking anyway14:48
granwhats the filepatch to xorg.conf again sorry?14:49
DJones/etc/X1114:49
granthanks14:50
granwhats happened to ctrl alt backspace btw? they removed it?14:55
granhow do i restart x now?14:55
macogran: zapping was disabled upstream a year or two ago. you can reenable it in your keyboard settings14:56
DJones!dontzap14:56
lubotu3To re-enable the Ctrl-Alt-Backspace combination that restarts your X server see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/DontZap14:56
maco(its one of the "enable ____ keyboard shortcut" things in there)14:56
grancheers14:56
moreatigran: until you've re-eabled it I think logging out restarts X, but reboot definately does :)14:57
macoyes logging out restarts X14:58
macoin one version, theres this lovely bug where the dm asking X to restart properly doesnt work...instead it crashes. which is fine for ubuntu users since gdm apparently just smashes X with a hammer til it dies, then spawns a new one, while kdm actually uses the restart command thats supposed to work for X, resulting in it not coming back up for logging back in.... i forget which release that is. 10.04 or 10.10 i think15:00
grancheers guys, i'll have to wait and see if it worked15:01

* BigRedS has no manual entry for 7zip15:18
BigRedSI have p7zip-full installed15:18

DJonesOn 10.0415:18

shaunoit should do; per the last two entries in http://packages.ubuntu.com/maverick/i386/p7zip/filelist15:19
macoBigRedS: its not a default package15:19
dwatkins   http://packages.ubuntu.com/maverick/i386/p7zip/filelist15:19
dwatkinsoops, sorry15:19
DJonesi installed p7zip & got the man page15:20
dwatkins7zr and p7zip have manpages in that ubuntu package, thanks shauno, but the one in CentOS (built by rpmforge) seems to have only html documentation; thanks all, I was just curious to compare distros.15:20
dwatkinsin summary: Ubuntu > CentOS15:20
shaunoI believe ubuntu inherits debian's position that not having a manpage is a bug15:20
dwatkinsshauno: I would agree with that state, also15:21
macoshauno: its possible to get packages into ubuntu without a manpage, but most packages come from debian, so most have one15:22
AlanBellany opinions on webalyzer vs awstats?15:22
macoive never used webalyzer, but ive had no issue with awstats15:22
dwatkinsI use webalyzer, it's very good in my opinion, AlanBell.15:23
dwatkinsand now you are back at square one, sorry...15:23
ali1234i use webalyzer, it's a little old fashioned15:23
ali1234also it won't give you mor than a year's worth of stats15:23
dutchiei hate freedom, so i use google analytics15:23
dwatkinsthere's also analog, ali123415:24
ali1234and the reports are not very detailed15:24
hamitronali1234: no pleasing some of us ;)15:24
ali1234well, i use webalyzer because it "just works" out of the box15:24
ali1234i couldn't figure out how to configure any of those others15:24
ali1234they wouldn't even give me anything15:24
macomm yeah, awstats needs a bit of config. by which i mean, i think i had to change 1 line in /etc/awstats/awstats.conf15:24
macoLogFormat=115:24
maco(to tell it its apache2)15:25
ali1234webalyzer doesn't seem to care even if the log format changes in the middle of the file (eg cos you changed webserver)15:25
dwatkinsThere's also Cacti or Munin, of course, but they are different.15:25
ali1234but thing is, i have quite a complex set up of vhosts too15:25
moreatiTO make the choice worse. I came across http://polliwog.sourceforge.net/ moons ago, GA like but self hostable15:26
ali1234by default, they all just hit /var/log/apache2/ on a cron job or something15:26
ali1234that doesn't work for me, i have separate logs15:26
AlanBellok, webalyzer was easy, but can I feed it old logs that are now compressed like access.log.9.gz15:29

MartijnVdSbrobostigon: not that I know of20:05
MartijnVdSbrobostigon: as far as I know it's a "remote fs"20:05
brobostigonMartijnVdS: so i put something inside said mountpoint, as it goes straight to the server, and with reading creates the appropriate latency.20:07
MartijnVdSyes20:07
brobostigonMartijnVdS: thank for clarifying that, you confirmed what i expected.20:08
MartijnVdSit's like nfs, smbfs, etc.20:09
brobostigonthought so, the latency concerns me.20:09
AvoHi - Anyone here able to help me with a NFS query? I'm trying to understand the mp/mountpoint export option20:10
* brobostigon wishes for gigabit ethernet.20:10
MartijnVdSAvo: if you provide mountpoint=, it will only export that directory if it's mounted20:10
MartijnVdSAvo: so say you say "mountpoint=/home", the export you're defining will onle be an export if /home is mounted20:11
ubuntuuk-planet[Tony] Well, thats about all we have time for - http://tonywhitmore.co.uk/blog/2010/12/22/well-thats-about-all-we-have-time-for/20:15
AvoThanks. Does it look in /etc/fstab to check there is a mountpoint for it? Just not sure how it checks. You could still have a home folder, but that wouldn't count?20:16
MartijnVdSAvo: no it checks if the pointed-to folder is actually a mount point20:16
MartijnVdSAvo: you can check if a folder is a mount point by typing "mount"20:16
MartijnVdSputting it in /etc/fstab will mount something on boot, so that would make it a mount point20:17
MartijnVdSExample time :)20:17
MartijnVdSSay your /home is on a separate partition20:17
MartijnVdSand it's in /etc/fstab, and mounts on startup20:17
MartijnVdSand in your /etc/exports you define an export for /home with the "mountpoint" option also set to /home20:17
MartijnVdSthen the /home export will only work if the mounting of /home worked at startup20:18
MartijnVdSif it didn't work (filesystem error, disk not present, etc.), it won't be exported20:18
AvoAh ok. Thanks for the example20:18
MartijnVdSso you don't end up with clients writing files in the wrong filesystem (/ in case /home wasn't mounted)20:19
AvoYup20:19
MartijnVdSI don't know if you need to re-export if you unmount/remount after exporting filesystems20:19
MartijnVdSbest way to find out is to try it :)20:19
AvoOk. Time for some testing. Thanks20:21
