creichjust making sure I understand04:11
c2taruncreich: nope I want to use both the of ubuntu and kubuntu, but there are 8 entries in my menu, memtest and all.04:12

roccity_how would I change the passphase on my home folder that is encrypted?04:14
c2taruncreich:  Ok, thanks :) i have one more problem, when i am trying to update ubuntu i am getting a message that waiting for jockeybinding to end? do this has anything to do with kubuntu?04:14
creichwhat are you typing to update04:15
c2taruncreich: nothing, i was updating by update manager.04:15
c2taruncreich: my ubuntu and kubuntu share same drive as a home folder04:16
creichI have to be honest I have no idea04:18
creichI would try an update from command line04:18
creichthen see what happens04:18
creichI dont believe it has anything to do with kubuntu04:19
creichconsidering they are both on different partitions and package managers dont really touch you /home directories04:19
creichif you want to try updating on the command line04:19
creichthen going back to package manager it may help04:20
creichalso make you can modify what goes on your bootup menu in GUI as well04:20
creichgo to System > Administration04:21
creich and search for whatever you want to remove04:21
c2taruncreich: i tried to install build-essential from command line but after update only anything from my command line works, dont know why?04:21

c2taruncreich: ya some errors like package not found and like that, i don't exactly remember them, I am in kubuntu right now04:23
creichok type $ sudo apt-get install build-essential    now04:24
creichor is it just error in the other ubuntu04:24
c2taruncreich: in kubuntu?04:24

creichso then its probably already on your system04:29
creichwhen you try to install it there is no message explaining that its already on your system04:30

nlsthznjust installed Kubuntu 10.10 and upgraded to 4.6, so far pretty slick and sexy, some graphical updating issues but all and all very nice :D09:51
geekosophernlsthzn: what kind of issues?10:05
Peace-i have no issue here...10:06
Peace-but i am on alpha 11.0410:06
nlsthzngeekosopher: scrolling in FF the page won't update until I scroll up and down a few times... or opening and closing multiple windows some of the interface of the one will linger on the other until I scroll over it... not to major, just annoying10:08

Peace-Elssha: this is called name expansion or something like that10:30
Peace-Elssha: for file in *.* ;do ffmpeg -i "$file" -ab 128k  "${file%.*}".mp3 ; done10:30

Peace-${file%.*}.mp310:30
ElsshaPathology_Sanchez_Ch01b_Overview.mpg    >>>  Path_Ch1b_Overview.mpg10:30

Elsshasome have a diff name after the first _10:31
ct529Peace-: do they all start with Pathology? do they all have Sanchez?10:31
ct529sorry, it was meant for Elssha10:32
Elsshaall start with Pathology, not all have sanchez (one of three or four though, so i can run 4 things fine) then all have Ch#letter and the name of the section10:32
Peace-Elssha: wait i will try10:33
ct529Elssha: do a backup first10:34
Elsshaso  Pathology_[1 of 3 names]_Ch[#letter]_[name].mpg10:34
Elsshai'll do a test folder, there's like 33gigs of them >_>10:34
Peace-sorry i have no time right now10:35
Peace-maybe after 12.0010:35
Elsshano worries peace10:35
ct529Elssha: try rename 's/Pathology_*_Ch/Path_Ch//' *.mpg10:35
Peace-but you can do with bash expansion10:35
ct529Elssha: in the folder, but only after having done a backup10:36
Elsshaidk bash at all10:36
Elsshabacking up now10:36
ct529Elssha: idk????10:36
Elsshai don't know10:36
ct529Elssha: sorry, I put too many /10:36
ct529Elssha: try rename 's/Pathology_*_Ch/Path_Ch/' *.mpg10:36
Elsshawait, that won't work, where does the actual name go10:37
ct529Elssha: the ' are important, do not forget them10:37
ct529Elssha: rename takes a regex10:37
Elsshaso  Pathology_[1 of 3 names]_Ch[#letter]_[filename].mpg10:37
ct529Elssha: 's/Pathology_*_Ch/Path_Ch/' is a regex10:38
Elsshathe [filename] part10:38
ct529Elssha: substitutes Pathology_whatever_Ch with Path_Ch in the file name of all files with extension mpg10:38
Elsshai did  rename 's/Pathology_*_Ch/Path_Ch/' *.mpg nothing happened10:43
Elssharename 's/Pathology_*_Ch/ Path_Ch/' *.mpg10:43
ct529Elssha: I have just done on mine, it definitively works10:45
Elsshathe one i posted up top?10:46
ct529Elssha: well, I changed the keywords and renominated all of the video files on my computer, and then back (withut backup ;) ....)10:47
ct529Elssha: and it works10:47
Elsshai'll try again10:47
ct529Elssha: you left one space too many!10:47
ct529Elssha: there is a space between the / and Path10:48
ct529Elssha: and there should not be one10:49

FloodBotK3Elssha: Please don't flood; use http://paste.ubuntu.com to paste; don't use Enter as punctuation.10:51
rorkElssha: you're using a perl regular expression, * isn't a wildcard but mean 'zero or more repetitions of the previous character' use `.*` instead: `rename 's/Pathology_.*_Ch/Path_Ch/' *.mpg`10:54
rork. = any character10:54
Elsshathat worked!10:54
rorkElssha: using .* is potentialy dangerous though, as it will find the longest possible string e.g. Pathology_Sanchez_Ch09b_Characters would be renamed to Pathology_Characters (I always remember that stuff right after sending the command)10:57
Elsshayeah, it did that to a couple10:58
Elsshabut i did ls before doing it so i can re input the ch #'s10:58

ct529Elssha: yes you are right, it does not work on your filenames, I wonder why10:58
ct529Elssha: it works on mine10:59
Elsshano clue10:59
Elsshabut rork solved it so all is good ^_^10:59
Elsshaeach folder (6) has a slight var so i gotta run it a couple more times after i fix the couple errors (the one rork mentioned above)11:00
ct529Elssha: try rename 's/Pathology_.*_C/Pat_C/' *mpg11:00
ct529Elssha: sorry, rename 's/Pathology_.*_C/Path_C/' *mpg11:00
rorkElssha: is the chapter number standard? You can use rename11:00
ct529there are a bit too many regex to my taste11:00
rork`rename 's/Pathology_Ch\d\d\w_C/Path_C/' *.mpg`11:01
rork\d = numeric, \w = alphanumeric11:02
ct529rork: it does have a name in the middle, of variable length, hence the need for the .*11:02
* rork needs coffee11:02
ct529rork: so 's/Pathology_.*_Ch/Path_c' *.mpg :-D11:03

geekosopherwill maverick get backport love when 4.6 gets monthly updates?11:40
geekosopher(no pun intended)11:40
Tm_Tgeekosopher: no, backports will be only bugfix releases11:40
Tm_Tgeekosopher: but PPA is another story11:41
geekosopherTm_T: sorry, yes I was referring to ppa/backports11:41
Tm_TI would expect that to happen11:41
talespin_kitI am using kubuntu distribution, I have both gvim and vim(which runs on console) installed. I use vim(console) for c++ programming. Should i use gvim or vim(console) ?. Does gvim has any advantage using vim ?.11:42
Tm_Ttalespin_kit: you can use Kate too, it has vim mode11:43
Tm_Ttalespin_kit: but IIRC the difference is mostly just GUI11:43
ct529talespin_kit: kate is pretty good, have you tried it?11:44
talespin_kitTm_T: which of IIRC in this did you mean http://www.acronymfinder.com/Slang/IIRC.html11:45
Tm_Ttalespin_kit: the recall correctly one (:11:46
ct529how unstable is nepomuk on kubuntu 1004 at 64bit? I cannot believ it has crashed again ....11:48
thecaptain2000does a user need to belong to a particular group so that you can ssh or ftp into a system using that user id/pwd?11:48
talespin_kitct529: i all try one day, right now i want to master vim and emacs for some time.11:49
ct529talespin_kit: then I suggest you stick to the text mode11:50
talespin_kitwhy? what advantage it has over gui?11:50
ct529talespin_kit: I though you sayd you wanted to master vim .... sorry, misunderstood11:51
thecaptain2000my question ahs to be either too intelligent of too dumb since it gets consistently ignored, I wonder which one it is...11:51
Tm_Tthecaptain2000: could be that noone who is active just now knows the answer11:52
ct529thecaptain2000: the reason it that it depends on your system setup11:53
ct529thecaptain2000: so there is no answer to yur question11:53
ct529thecaptain2000: but google is your friend11:53
thecaptain2000Tm_T: it could possibly be11:53
ct529thecaptain2000: http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/openssh-deny-or-restrict-access-to-users-and-groups.html11:53
thecaptain2000I did google for it but I did not find that page, I apreciate it could be dependent upon my configuration but the fact that I could not either ftp or ssh into that system made me suspicious it was a founfamental misunderstanding from my part of what it's going on11:55
ct529thecaptain2000: could it be firewall'd?11:55
thecaptain2000no, I can do it with an existing user, just the newly created cannot be used11:55
thecaptain2000 I mean, I can ssh and ftp with an existing user but not with a newly created one11:56
thecaptain2000I am using openssh and proftp11:56
ct529thecaptain2000: you have to check the system setup first, how the permissions are set11:57
ct529thecaptain2000: there may be a statement allowing only certain groups (admin are often excluded)11:57
thecaptain2000let me check11:58
ct529sorry, I have to go11:58
thecaptain2000ok, thanks anyway11:59

BluesKajdthacker, usually you add a repos by either copy and pasting to /etc/apt/source.list or using this command in the terminal : sudo add-apt-repository "deb name of repositoru url" , without the quotes .15:21
ezra-sIs it possible to hide joins and parts in Quassel? I can't find it :P15:21

ezra-sIm giving kde another try, this time Im enjoying it much more15:23
james147ox3a: why are you trying to get the drivers from te nvdia site? are the ones in teh repo not working?15:23

james147ox3a: ^^ why do you have a problem if it is not? have your tried it?15:25

ox3ajames147, I did not try it yet15:26

ezra-syou mean the status window?15:32
ezra-sI prefer to see my whois in the active channel15:32

BluesKajjames147, it may be ..always found the degrees kelvin / celcius  conversion confusing in terms of the way it's expressed16:00
james147ezra-s: network > add network folder?16:00
james147BluesKaj: basically kelvin starts at absalute zero  (aka -273.15C)16:01
ezra-sjames147: in dolphin? all it seems to allow me is browse my network but it is not giving results, in fact dolphin is trying my default smb domain (but it is just a machine sharing no samba domain or anything)16:02

BluesKajezra-s, good !16:37
kt_ok james we will sort this out later16:37

kt_i tried command "who"16:38
kt_it shows 2 users, uptime also show 2 users online16:38
kt_while im only user online16:38

lumos_Sorry, and yeah...that was dumb of me, but i was getting desperate, startx and nothing else will work anyway17:52
Tm_T!rpm | steffen_17:53
ubottusteffen_: RPM is the RedHat Package Management system. Ubuntu uses !APT, not RPM. RPM packages are not supported (the package "alien" can allow installing them, but it's quite dangerous and unsupported)17:53

aditirexbajk-tragbar  - did you googled it about the error you get ? it might be a problem with sdd 64bit driver or something19:13
bajk-tragbarvI wont give up the comfort and advancedness of Linux just because of some broken installer19:13
jussiGuest3093: inexperienced people?19:13
james147bajk-tragbar: not sure i can help with the installer, but you could try a new user ( and thus s clean profile) on the current install to see if that clears up any of the issues, then you could copy the install across19:13
Guest3093well english is not my 1st kanguage, so i don't know how to say properly some ideas i have19:13
Guest3093sry19:13
bajk-tragbarjames147: hm, maybe I can just copy the / from my current install over, since I think the broken things are more related to my configs in ~ than to the install itself19:14
bajk-tragbarbut I will give the installer another try19:14
james147Guest3093: either way, suggesting to people to "use  windows instead" is not a very good answer...19:14
Guest3093james147 it is good idea when ur laptop isn't compatible, like unichrome pro igp, or whatever19:15
james147bajk-tragbar: yeah, its normally problems in ~ break the most things, cleaning it out (or copying everything but that) might work if the installer fails again19:16
Randy_T_I want to install the latest version of grub2(1.99rc1) so that i can install it to a usb, but i dont want to override my current grub2 buntu package(1.98). I'm guessing i could just use a different prefix in ./configure, then make, checkinstall.  Install grub to my usb, then remove the new grub package with kpackagekit.  I just want to confirm that this wont overrwite/screwup my current grub installed package.19:17
bajk-tragbarjames147: how do I copy it the best way?19:17
iulian_hmmm is took me weeks to take my laptop to work before with nvidia g105m and kubuntu 9.0419:17
bajk-tragbarbut well the installer says "Copying almost done.. 77%"19:17
james147Guest3093: but windows is not a comaptable os.... its most likly that the other pwerson wants a linux baised OS, suggesting windows jsut beacuse they are having some problems is not an accepted answer.... at the very worst suggesting a nother distro might be...19:17
bajk-tragbarbut I think it will crash again when I click next to enter my username and password19:17
bajk-tragbarjames147: YaST is a quite decend installer :P19:18
bajk-tragbarso, it says Ready when you are, i will click on next19:18
Guest3093bajk-tragbar are u installing using usb?19:18
james147bajk-tragbar: I would create the partitions yo need then copy the files over, edit /etc/fstab for its new location and chroot into the new root to install grub19:18
bajk-tragbarubi-usersetup failed with exit cod 10.19:18
bajk-tragbarjames147: I think I will do this approeacj19:19
james147bajk-tragbar: (^^ just a stright copy, i would probally use rsync)  you `could` try doing a stright dd, but i am not sure what happens if you try that on a smaller disk :)19:19
bajk-tragbarthere is NOTHING good at this kubuntu installer, nothing, nothing, nothing19:20
james147bajk-tragbar: although i would test a new user first to comfirm that the problems are not with your system before you wasit your time :)19:20
bajk-tragbarI want to install it anyway, so ..^^19:21
bajk-tragbarwhat is wrong with the installer: it doesnt work with WiFI (doesnt let you specify a password),  it doesnt let you manually change time, you can only specify a time zone, it crashes all the tim19:21
Guest3093bajk-tragbar model of ur hd?19:23
james147bajk-tragbar: well i ahve never had it crash on me... so its probally something wierd with your hardware configuration :S19:23

joebob6625anyone know a good way to set up samba shares for a xbox with xbmc on it19:26

joebob6625for the xbox to connect to19:27

ubottuSamba is the way to cooperate with Windows environments. Links with more info: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MountWindowsSharesPermanently and https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/serverguide/C/windows-networking.html - Samba can be administered via the web with SWAT.19:28
joebob6625cool thanks i will try these19:28
james147joebob6625: basically install "samba" and configure /etc/samba/smb.conf19:29
surexHi all.. I have just now installed kubuntu10.10. Now I am trying to build trunk following this link http://techbase.kde.org/Getting_Started/Build/KDE4/Kubuntu_and_Debian  . Is this sufficient or its better to use kdesrc-build?19:29
james147there is a gui frontend to configureing samba in kde, but its quite heavy19:29
joebob6625yeah the kde one i could not get to work i can see all the other comuters on the network but they can not see the kubuntu box19:31
joebob6625that could be a win 7 thing i dont know i am just starting to look into it19:31
james147joebob6625: i would learn howto configure samba manually, i find it easier then using the kde interface :p19:32

joebob6625work better19:33
james147Randy_T_: you wont beable to install it from kpackagekit19:34
james147uninstall ^^19:34
Randy_T_doesn't checkinstall make it show up in the packagemanager?19:34
james147"make uninstall" form the build dir might...19:34
Randy_T_thats how it works with other stuff i install19:35
james147Randy_T_: building from source isent aware of the packagemenegment system... you would need to build a .deb and install taht19:35
james147^^ never used checkinstall though19:35
Randy_T_well i guess worst case scenario woudln't be anything that bad, i'll just do it19:36
james147ignore what i said :) look like checkinstall will do that sorry19:36

francisco_hi, how to back to kde default?22:01
jonahhi guys, i wondered if anyone could please help. I have a NAS and I'm running Kubuntu 10.10 but I can only transfer files at 1.5mb/s speed, never seem to get any faster than that. is there something in kubuntu that needs setting or changing for faster transfer speeds - i think it uses samba. thanks for help....22:01

rethushow can i activate it.22:07
dmattjonah: what connection to NAS do you use?22:08
jonahdmatt: well I'm going through wireless router. so the nas is connected via ether net to router and then my laptop/pc connects wirelessly to the router to get access to nas22:10
jonahdmatt: i did a broadband online speed test and i get over 8mbps so my broadband to router connection is awesome but why can't i get good transfer speeds from nas to pc through router?22:11
dmattjonah: wifi is limiting your transfer speed, i have the similar situation here with speed over cable 5 times better22:12
jonahdmatt: really? but i thought wifi could do 54mbps speed? isn't that what most wifi cards run at?22:13
jonahdmatt: 1.5mbps seems very very low even for wifi?22:13
dmattjonah: that is theoretical maximum, you might get lower connection speed and jamming with other wifi or users nearby22:14
jonahdmatt: is there any way to optimise it a little higher? also is cat5e the right ethernet cable to use from nas to router?22:15
markithi, I've upgraded to 4.6, but I put username/password, screen flashes briefly, and I'm back to login. I've checked and I have kubuntu-desktop and also dbus running, any clue?22:15
