JackyAlcinejohnny77: OpenOffice's headed on a different path since Oracle's tending to close up its idea of open-source.01:44
JackyAlcinejohnny77: LibreOffice's the way to go, it's the standard office for Ubuntu 11.04.01:44
JackyAlcinejohnny77: Also, the developer community behind Libre is huge, huger than that of composed of Oo (mainly a merger of some, if any).01:45
johnny77JackyAlcine: thank you.01:48
JackyAlcineno problem ,johnn7701:52
johnny77If I was to download a program and I had a choice of Linux x86 (rpm), Linux x86 (deb), Linux x64 (rpm), & Linux x64 (deb). Which should I choose?01:57
JackyAlcinejohnny77: What kind of computer are you running? 64-bit? 32-bit?02:01
JackyAlcinejohnny77: And do you know the differences?02:02
johnny77i think i'm running 32, but how do I make sure?02:02
JackyAlcine1If so, open System Mointor to the first tab, it should notate whether it's x86 or x64.02:07
GeocosmUmm... how would I go about uninstalling a botched .net 3.5 install I used winetricks-alpha to install? Every time I try to download it my internet turns off for some reason. And I ^C'd to stop it and now when I try to download it, it tells me it's already installed.02:18
Geocosm.deb would probably be easier to install, johnny77.02:19
GeocosmAfter you figure out if you're running 32-bit or 64-bit.02:20
NisorinHello, my sister just installed Ubuntu Studio on her laptop, and now Windows 7 will not boot or show up on the bootloader. We had Maverick Meerkat dualbooted on it successfully for a while, just had wifi driver issues (Damn broadcom.) Her Windows partitions (main, media & programs) is accessible from Studio, all the files seem to be there and intact.02:22

GeocosmUhg. sorry. Lag.02:23
JackyAlcineNisorin: Is it running now?02:24
JackyAlcinejohnny77: Are you still around?02:24
Nisorin@Jacky I just booted it up, it's at the bootloader now. Only options are Ubuntu, Ubuntu Recovery Mode, and two memory tests.02:25
JackyAlcineNisorin: Start Ubuntu.02:25
NisorinStarting.02:25
NisorinIt just came up with a couple errors. MODPROBE Fatal, couldn't find a file. Two copies of the same error message, but Ubuntu Studio booted fine anyway.02:27
JackyAlcineAlright, can you open a terminal window?02:27
NisorinOpened.02:28
JackyAlcineAnd is Windows partitioned onto the same harddrive?02:28
NisorinYes. The laptop only has one hard drive.02:28
JackyAlcineAlright.02:28
JackyAlcineIn the terminal, enter:02:28
JackyAlcinesudo grub-install /dev/sda02:28
JackyAlcinehaving /dev/sda being the hard drive of your computer.02:29
NisorinIt said installation finished, no error reported.02:29
johnny77JackyAlcine: I'm here, sorry had to step away for a bit02:29
JackyAlcinejohnny77: Run 'file /sbin/init' in a terminal.02:31
JackyAlcineAnd Nisorin: now run 'sudo update-grub /dev/sda'02:31
NisorinGenerating grub.cfg02:31
NisorinFound linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.35-22-generic02:32
NisorinFound initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-2.6.35-22-generic02:32
NisorinFound memtest86+ image: /boot/memtest86+.bin02:32
NisorinDone.02:33
JackyAlcineHm. That's odd. It should have found Windows..02:33
johnny77JackyAlcine: It said 32bit. So I should download the x86 deb?02:33
JackyAlcinejohnny77: Yes, the x64 deb won't work.02:33
johnny77JackyAlcine: ok, thank you.02:34
JackyAlcineNisorin: Do you have a Windows recovery CD?02:35
JackyAlcineNisorin: If anything, I think you should re-install the Windows boot loader and try re-installing GRUB over it and see if that'll fix anything.02:35
NisorinSis: I have the discs to reinstall windows, and the discs to reinstall the drivers.02:36
NisorinI'm assuming the reinstallation disc would have a recovery console I could use to reinstall the Windows Bootloader?02:37
NisorinJust in case, backing up files from the three Windows partitions before trying anything.02:41
JackyAlcineNisorin: Yeah, but if I remember properly, you might need to download the applicatio FIXMBR.exe from Microsoft. If any, (because I'm a bit hazy about this), consult the forums.02:43
NisorinFix MBR? Master Boot Record?02:50
JackyAlcineYup, Nisorin.02:55
JackyAlcineNisorin: Because of my lack of experience, I recommend asking in #ubuntu02:56
NisorinAlright, I'll go head over there. Came here first because #ubuntu was always massively busy whenever I tried asking about the wireless driver problem in Meerkat.02:56
zeekucan someone help me, I'm trying to install ubuntu lucid alternate from a usb. I've created the bootable usb using the multisystem/multiboot program. During the installation I get the message no kernel modules found. I have to use the alternate version due to graphics card/freezing problems I face in normal live cd installation.03:45
ikt bugger zeeku :(03:45
zeekuyeah sux03:45
iktwhich multiboot program?03:45
zeekuits the one from http://liveusb.info/dotclear/03:46
zeekuI've also tried to just burn the iso onto a cd but my disk drive (using brasero) constantly fails and does not complete the burn03:47
zeekuso the only option i have is to install from usb03:48
iktare you trying to install ubuntu by itself on the pc? or alongside other operating systems?03:48
zeekuthen once i do do that, hopefully reconfigure the graphics/video drivers so 10.04 doesn't randomnly freeze03:48
zeekuI am currently running ubuntu 9.04 right now. I also have fedora 14 on another partition. But no windows ntfs. only ext3 for this ubuntu and the other that fedora uses03:50
iktare you using fedora 14?03:51
iktI'm just wondering because there's no reason to use multiboot if you just want ubuntu03:51
zeekuI tried it, but don't like it03:51
iktyeah that's cool03:52
zeekuThe main reason I used multiboot is that I am having problems with my cd driver burning cds03:52
iktyou can use this program:03:52
ikthttp://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/03:52
iktto make a usb startup disk with ubuntu 10.1003:52
iktI recommend it because it works every time :>03:53
zeekuwill that work inside ubuntu?03:53
zeekuI've used it inside windows before I think but not ubuntu03:53
zeekuI don't have access to windows at the moment.03:53
zeekuEven my wine program doesn't work03:54
zeekuI don't mind replacing 9.04 with 10.04 but only if 10.04 will work.03:54
iktyeah it should work on ubuntu03:56
iktgrab 10.1003:57
iktwhat video card do you have?03:57
ikt10.10 latest and greatest :D03:57
iktalso what os are you using atm?03:57
zeekuYeah it is but I unfortunately kept having those damn random freezes so I had to revert back to 9.0403:58
zeekufunnily 9.10 had freezes as well03:58
ikthrmm03:58
zeekumy videocard is built into my motherboard.03:58
zeekuits a SIS one03:59
iktah drats :<03:59
iktahhh drats x203:59
zeekuyeah I know its annoying.03:59
zeekuI even had to revert back to using windows at one stage. Grrrr!03:59
ikt>.<03:59
zeekuhahaha04:00
iktare you unable to get a cheap 2nd hand video card?04:00
iktit would save a lot of trouble04:00
zeekuI can but not soon enough. A bit if a broke student atm04:00
zeekuI will probably just buy a new system soon as I have enough loot. This is one is seeing its last days.04:02
zeekuwhat video cards are compatible with 10.04/10.10?04:02
zeekuOne more question does Unebootin allow different distributions of ubuntu on the same disk(usb), and in so doing allow you o choose which one you boot?04:06
JackyAlcinezeeku: You'd have to partition up the USB.04:09
iktzeeku, sorry I'm getting distracted, using relately recent nvidia or ati video cards is your best bet, anything made by them in the last 1 - 4 years will work fine :)04:10
zeekuNo problems :).04:11
iktand nah zeeku, imho you're best bet is to install ubuntu solo, then muck around with other distros in virtualbox04:11
iktI do most of my ubuntu testing in virtualbox04:11
iktit's one of the best software I have seen in a long time04:11
zeekuI see... cool.04:11
zeekuSo what do you reccommend I do with regards to my current 9.0404:12
zeekuI need to be able to reinstall it just incase 10.04 is unusable.04:12
zeekuJacky... thanks for your response:)04:12
iktoh true04:12
zeekuI'm wary of my disk(cd) drive at the moment.04:13
zeekuIt just won't burn live cds without errors so I can't even make a backup live cd04:14
iktyeah I know what you mean04:14
zeekuSo ideally I'd like to have a bootable 9.04 version on my usb as well. Unfortunately multisystem/multiboot boots directly when I select the "boot from usb" mode04:15
zeekuSo I don't think Unebootin will work with multisystem installed on the same usb drive04:16
JackyAlcineNot really.04:16
iktyeah I didn't realise you're kinda buggered if 10.10 doesn't work04:17
zeekuhi jacky, total noob here04:18
zeekuyeah ikt i'm sort of screwed if 10.10 doesn't work04:18
iktyeah good point04:18
zeekuunless I can access fedora 1404:18
zeekuthe main thing is being able to access the net so I can find some solutions...04:19
zeekuJacky... how would I get the system to recognize both Unebootin and Multisystem?04:20
zeekuAt the moment it seems multisystem has the priority04:20
iktyeah it will04:21
ikti wouldn't worry about unetbootin04:21
iktit's designed for single installs afaik04:21
zeekuI see... but its a possible solution at least.04:22
zeekuThe main problem I'm having with multisystem is that its saying that no kernel modules have been found.04:23
zeekuWhen trying to install 10.0404:23
zeekuI don't know where to access the 10.04 kernel possibly replace the 9.04 kernel with it (if that can be done without problems) and have multisystem point to that kernel.04:25
zeekuSo that when 10.04 searches for kernel modules it finds the correct one to use.04:25
zeekuI think multisystem uses a different kernel altogether( not sure, noob) and because I've created the iso on the usb, the 10.04 is using the kernel on the multisystem (noob)??04:27

ddecatorhm, anyone know if there is a way to auto authenticate a private ssh key that has a passphrase? i'm using ssh keys for my irc server, but i don't want to have to enter my passphrase each time since i have a script that also ssh's to my server, and the connection needs to be reset occassionally, and i don't want to have to check to see if i need to enter my passphrase again06:01
ddecatorback in the spring i remember i would get a pop-up asking for the passphrase, and after i entered it the key would be authenticated until i logged out. now i just get a prompt in the terminal and it needs it each time a connection is made. not sure if i lost that because i moved from gnome to kde or what06:03

BethDO97how do I get this to boot to the desktop, I seem to have encountered an error in the installation and despite telling it to auto login during setup after rebooting it only takes me to the tty terminal - Why?06:19
ddecatorfigured out my problem (i think). for those curious, i use "ssh-agent bash" then "ssh-add" so that terminal window has my passphrase stored and ready to go, then i just launch my script in that terminal and it works (for now at least, hasn't been running long enough for me to know for sure)06:26

BethDO97ikt  Hi06:29
iktvery unlucky to have the issue :(06:29
iktif you type startx, does anything happen?06:29
BethDO97I am attempting to download updates at the tty terminal aand some times the message says Ign ......; Sometimes it comes back withh Failed to fetch...... and soometimes (-5 - No address associated with host name) none of theses things sound good.  Does the Ign indicste that these were downloaded and if they were do I have to do something to apply theem to the system?06:31
ddecatorIgn isn't a big deal. the "Failed to fetch" implies that the server is either down or that you have a PPA enabled which was removed. are you just running "sudo apt-get update" right now?06:32
ikttbh it just sounds like it's not connected to the internet06:33
ddecatoryah, that could be it as well if it's not fetching anything06:34
BethDO97It just got done, but  the number of updates shown is the same as before I ran the apt-get update06:35

BethDO97Thanks so much - Been at this 3 days tryingg to get this computer worrking for my son.  Getting alittle annoyed but now it is the principle of the thing I will get ubuntu working on it even if it kills me07:41
charliemacIt said, "Linux ubuntu 2.6.35-25-generic-pae #44-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jan 21 19:01:46 UTC 2011 i 686 GNU/Linux...07:42
ddecatorBethDO97: no problem. do you know how to use "cd"?07:42
charliemacSo, is that 32-bit or 64-bit?07:42
yofel32-bit07:42
ddecatorcharliemac: 686 is 32-bit07:42
zkriesse3207:42
iktBethDO97, i feel for ya, it's just luck of the draw that the laptop you have has a chipset that doesn't play nice with ubuntu :(07:42
yofelgood morning07:42
ddecatoror i68607:42
ddecatormorning yofel07:42
zkriessei386 is the 32 bit and i64x is 64bit07:43
iktzkriesse, ah just wondering, I'm pretty much same situation as you, except your a lot younger than me :P07:43
zkriesseikt: how old are you?07:43
yofelactually the kernel will display 64-bit as x86_6407:43
JackyAlcineddecator: I normally find the bit-set of my computer by entering 'file /sbin/init' into my terminal.07:43
zkriesseyeah that's what i meant07:43
zkriesseI knew there was an x in there somewhere07:43
ikt2407:44
zkriesseHeh...07:44
zkriesseI'm 20 bro07:44
zkriesseWell, couple months07:45
ddecatorat this age, 4 years makes a world of difference07:45
yofelJackyAlcine: right, that would work too07:45
JackyAlcine:D just helping the helpers. ;D07:46
* yofel notes he's 24 too, feels really old with so much kids around :P07:46
ddecatorJackyAlcine: appreciated :)07:47
charliemacOk, cool.  (I had to install over the network using the 'clear as mud' Grub instal method here: http://marc.herbert.free.fr/linux/win2linstall.html and here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromWindows )07:47
charliemacIs it better to use07:48
zkriesseWell depends07:49
charliemaclol, sorry, "proprietary drivers" or07:49
charliemacwhatever the alternative is called? ;P07:50
yofelopen source drivers ;)07:50
charliemacAre there times that the07:50
yofelI can't talk about ATI, but the proprietary nvidia drivers work fine here, but if you don't need 3D/opengl support nouveau is a bit faster07:51
charliemacadditional drivers menu only lists proprietary drivers?07:51
yofelit does, since the open source drivers are installed and used by default07:51
ddecatorthe only disadvantage to the nvidia proprietary drivers is that plymouth looks awful07:52
yofelnatty will handle that better, at least the color depth07:52
ddecatorgood07:52
yofel(if colin doesn't revert the change again, but it seems stable enough this time)07:53
ddecatori would almost rather have a black screen than the eyesore it is right now, haha07:53
charliemaclol!07:53
yofelyeah, the text splash is really ugly07:53
yofelif you know how, setting the framebuffer resolution by hand isn't really hard though07:54
charliemacI just went onto rhapsody.com to play a song and it prompted me to adobe/flash download, but there are several different options, surprise07:59
ddecatorcharliemac: you can install flash from the official repos07:59
ddecatorwhat's the package...flashplugin-installer?08:00
charliemachttp://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/08:00
zkriessejust go to software center08:00
zkriesseApplications -> Software Center -> Search Bar/Flash -> Adobe Flash download08:00
ddecatoror that08:01
charliemacI'm afraid that if i install flash thru software ctr, it might not be picked up thru firefox later, wrong?08:01
zkriesseIt'll be fine08:01
ddecatorfirefox will see it08:01
zkriesseIf not we can always hop on it the other way too08:01
charliemacIs software ctr the same as the official repos?08:01
charliemacCool08:01
zkriessePretty much08:02
zkriesseWhatever repo's you have selected to be used it'll pull crap from em08:02
zkriesseOr you can do the lovely search and hunt in the Synaptic Package Manager but I'd not recommend that if you're new to this stuff08:03
zkriesseCan be quite confusing...heck I still find it to be bonfoogleing08:03
ddecatoryah, it'll just show the "relevant" stuff, such as actual applications, and not the random packages most people don't need to worry about08:03
ddecatori love synaptic :)08:03
zkriesselol I know you do Dray08:03
charliemacNot sure what repos are.  Hey, I made it through Grub network installation, didn't I?! ;)08:03
zkriesseddecator: Hey, I forget, you like wiki do you not?08:03
ddecatorzkriesse: used to do some work on it, but no time right now for it08:04
zkriessedamn08:04
zkriesseWas gonna tell ya, I'm reviving WIki FG for BT08:04
zkriesseMeeting this saturday (Today) at 19:00 UTC08:04
zkriessein #ubuntu-meeting08:04
ddecatorcharliemac: a repo (repository) is just a collection of packages that are maintained by a group. the official repos are maintained by ubuntu devs who make sure they are all compatible08:04
charliemacWhat makes booting slow (before I can log in), loading the display manager, or loading the desktop environment?08:05
ddecatorzkriesse: yah, i'm only slightly involved compared to everything i used to do. just helping BT here and there and going to try doing the whole master/mentor thing for BT and BugSquad combo08:05
zkriesseNice08:05
charliemacddecator: thank you very much!08:06
zkriesseWell if ya need testimonials for it I'll set one on your page for ya08:06
yofelcharliemac: before you log in it has to be the system/display manager08:06
yofelyou can use bootchart to find out what makes it slow08:06
ddecatorzkriesse: i think you already have one on there from when i was going to be up for ubuntu membership, which never did happen, haha08:06
zkriessedamn08:06
zkriesseWhy not?08:06
charliemacI was thinking of lubuntu because my laptop's at least 5 years old.08:07
charliemacWhere is bootchart located?08:07
zkriessecharliemac: phillw will love you forever if you converrt to Lubuntu08:07
zkriesseThat's his baby08:07
yofelI have kubuntu on a 10y old PC, so that system should be fast enough for ubuntu08:07
yofelcharliemac: you need to install it08:07
BethDO97+ddecator: I tried something - booted from the CD into live and the desktop comes right up, yet when I boot from the  harddrive it still dumps into the terminal08:08
zkriesseyofel: WTF...not even gonnna say hi to me?!?!?!08:08
* zkriesse pokes yofel 08:08
yofelzkriesse: I didn't? sooory :S08:08
zkriesse:D08:08
yofelzkriesse: HI08:08
zkriesseLol it's cool..how ya been my man08:08
yofelgetting headaches from Project Neon - other than that, fine08:09
zkriessehuh08:09
zkriesseI know the feeling08:09
zkriesse(Headaches)08:09
charliemacI really couldn't figure out how to do a network installation of Lubuntu, so I had to go with the the Natty Narwhal (11.04)08:09
BethDO97now to figure out why it will boot to live mode but not from the hard drive08:09
ddecatorzkriesse: well, i showed up to the meeting but there weren't enough people to vote, and the following week was when i stopped getting on because i was too busy, so i never attended another hearing08:09
BethDO97did get a low graphics warning08:09
zkriessecharliemac: join #lubuntu08:10
yofelcharliemac: as long as you know that natty isn't released yet and may or may not break at any time, ok... (I'm on natty too)08:10
ddecatorBethDO97: so it has never worked? you could try re-installing to see if maybe something just didn't install right. not sure if you want to go through that or not08:10
charliemacAny suggestions for a DM quicker than GDM?08:10
zkriesseMAVERICK08:10
yofelcharliemac: iirc there is LXDM, but I never tried it08:10
charliemacyofel: lol nice to know re natty08:11
BethDO97My son is taking a class in linus programmingg and I am trying to get this laptop setup so he can use it for hiss class thiss symester08:11
ddecatorBethDO97: very nice of you :)08:11
yofelcharliemac: general natty support is in #ubuntu+1 btw. so feel free to join us there08:11
BethDO97I have loaded and reloaded this program multiple tiime with absolutely no success08:12
ddecatorBethDO97: i'm sorry to hear that. unfortunately kernel/graphics issues are not something i'm good with, but hopefully someone else will have more ideas on what you can do to get it working08:13
charliemacjoined #lubuntu and #ubuntu+108:14
charliemacWhat does it mean to right click>unmount something on my desktop?08:17
BethDO97+ddecator: What is a keyring? When I aaccessed the internet connection setup for my wireless connection, I put in the network password and then the keyring password request window popped up08:17
ddecatorcharliemac: if it's a usb drive, it disconnects from it so you can remove it08:18
ddecatorBethDO97: the keyring keeps track of certain passwords on your system all in one place, such as network passwords08:18
charliemacIt's the first primary partition, which still holds windows xp, my reserve parachute ;D08:19
charliemacddecator: ^^08:19
ddecatorhaving the hdd mounted allows you to access the files and transfer things back and forth. unmounting will close that connection and you'll just see the hdd so you can mount it again when you need it08:20
ddecatoror rather the hdd partition08:20
ddecatorBethDO97: by the way, you don't need the + symbol when you say my name, it just means that i have "voice" since i'm a member of the team. it's also easier to use tab-complete for nicks. for example, type dd<tab> and it will auto-complete my nick :)08:22
BethDO97ddecator: cool figured theere was a way to make thhis a little easier08:23
ddecatoralright, i need to get some sleep. good night everyone08:24
BethDO97ddecator: is there a way to download the updates and other things I need for my hard drive insttall while I am in the live desktop?08:25
yofelgn ddecator08:25
ddecatorBethDO97: hm, there is a way..08:26
BethDO97ddecator:  figured I might be able to take advantage of the internet connection and fix the hard drive install whhile I was in the live version08:26
ddecatorBethDO97: look under "update failure" http://iamubuntu.blogspot.com/2009/03/recovering-from-booting-problems-using.html08:27
ddecatorfollow those steps and it should update/upgrade the packages for the installed system08:27
BethDO97ddecator:  thanks again and gn08:28
ddecatorBethDO97: no problem, that's what we're here for :)08:28
charliemacIs there a better IRC client than webchat.freenode.net, which I have been using?08:29
JackyAlcinecharliemac: There's Pidgin, XChat, KIRC, Ircissi.08:31
JackyAlcineI'm using Pidgin. :D08:31
yofeladd irssi, quassel, konversation08:31
yofelfor gnome i would recommend xchat08:31
charliemacI might want something lighter than gnome lol08:33
yofelfor any gtk+ based desktop env08:34
charliemac!gtk+08:34
ubot2Factoid 'gtk+' not found08:34

yofel!gtk08:35

charliemacyofel: ok, thanks.  lol, i was just on wikipedia :)08:36
yofelthat's just my recommendation, I use quassel, irssi would be command line08:36
charliemacyofel: can empathy access these IRC rooms?08:43
charliemac(it came pre-installed)08:43
BethDO97after going to the terminal tthru the dessktop how do you get baack to the desktopp?08:44
yofelwell it can (somehow), but it's not really good at it08:45

charliemacWhere can I enter "/msg nickserv register <password> <email> "?09:43

charliemacAbhiJit: ^^09:45
AbhiJitcharliemac, which irc client you are using?09:45
charliemacwebchat.freenode.net09:46

AbhiJitwebchat09:46
charliemacok09:46
AbhiJitcharliemac, look for the very first tab i think its that09:46
charliemacGotcha, thanks.09:47
AbhiJitcharliemac, practically you can do that operation here too in this very text box where you are chatting with me but sometimes new comers types space before / and they revel password09:47
AbhiJitthats why its safe to do it in server tab09:47
charliemacok, that makes sense.  Better safe than sorry09:47
MrChrisDruifAbhiJit: doesn't /msg go JUST to the nickserv? ;)09:49
AbhiJit??09:49
AbhiJitMrChrisDruif, read my explanation above09:49
AbhiJiti have lots of 'smart' friend who love to type space before that / and so they reveal their password09:49

madsailor<- only has non technical answer for charliemac - since theres noone else answering.  : There should be a speaker icon in thpanel at the top of the ubuntu desktop on the right side that controls audio settings12:33
charliemacmadsailor: Thank you, but unfortunately this problem appears to run a little deeper :/12:34
madsailorcharliemac, you can try #ubuntu ..maybe someone can help there12:36

vangelisi went to google site via an ubuntu forum and i downloaded a package which i opened with ubuntu software center12:49
gunndawgWhere is the themes folder at ?12:56
philinuxvangelis: Did you get it here. http://www.google.com/earth/download/ge/agree.html12:58

gunndawgmadsailor its not there13:00
gunndawgmadsailor I need to reinstall a theme but when I try to drag it over to the apperance window it says it cant copy a directory over a directory, so I need to delete it and re add it13:00

gunndawghttp://tinypic.com/r/2gv06r9/713:39
madsailorgunndawg, in the folder extracted to the desktop is a readme and further tar files.  You need to follow the readme and extract the contents of those tars....that is where the icons and the rest of the theme lives13:40
gunndawgmadsailor, I did that, I dragged them into the themes window13:40
gunndawgbut no matrix theme shows up on my themes panel13:41
gunndawgmadsailor I just tried to drag it into themes again and it says "Installation for theme "HLMatrix" failed. Can't move directory over directory13:42
gunndawgwhich means its already there (because I already did it) but its not showing up in the list13:43
madsailorokay so  you took file nostromo-1.0.3.tar.gz and drag-drop to appearance window?13:43
gunndawgyes13:43
gunndawgas well as HLMatrix.tar.gz13:43
gunndawgthe only new theme it made was called "custom" which is what I have now displayed in the screenshot I sent you13:43
gunndawgI wish I could somehow remove it so that I can drag it over again and maybe it'll show up13:44
gunndawgbut I cant drag it over again13:44
madsailorgunn, I think the files are already there....click customize in the appearance window, click the icons tab.  there should be an icon set named nostromo...this is the one you want13:47
madsailorthen the same with window border13:48
gunndawgok I got the icons works13:48
gunndawgworking*13:48
gunndawgwonder why I cant get HLMatrix.tar.gz to work right13:49
gunndawgso the top bar is black and gradiant like in the picture on the matrix theme page13:49
madsailorTen-Eight, sorry for ignoring youfor the window border you need emerald as its an emerald theme.  For the rest (icons windows, wallpaper) you do not)13:50
gunndawgmadsailor I deleted HLMatrix.tar.gz from .themes and re added it by dragging it into the themes page and it says that it installed fine13:51
gunndawgbut it doesnt show up in the themes list13:51
Ten-Eightno prob....just reading a bit on it. got the file. may try it later this morning.13:52
Ten-Eightlove the Matrix movies...looks like a nice theme...best one I've seen.13:53
gunndawggood luck getting it to work13:54
gunndawgi've got it about 75% working, but the last 25% is what makes it come together, otherwise it doesnt look right13:54
Ten-Eightwhat ver of Ubuntu are you using?13:54
gunndawg10.1013:55
Ten-Eightokay.13:55
Ten-Eighthaven't used 10.10 yet.13:55
gunndawgI would be thrilled with it if I could get this working, would look so awesome13:55
Ten-EightI like the LTS versions and try to stay with them. I'm on 10.04 right now on this laptop and on the main system at home, 8.04.13:56
gunndawgI am using 10.10 on this laptop13:56
madsailorgunndawg, you have to add each aspect seperately under the customize button.  The one you are missing is the controls tab under customize....scroll down to hlmatrix13:56
gunndawglet me see madsailor13:57
madsailormy everything is now matrixified as I write this13:57

gunndawgah nice14:12
gunndawglol14:12
gunndawgI like the font of ur icons though14:12
Ten-Eightnice screenshot madsailor14:13
Ten-EightI got it all working except the window decorations. still showing the old one.14:14
madsailorfont is : steve hand ...it's in the ubuntu repo14:14
Ten-Eightvery cool...except for that.14:14
madsailorten eight..the window decorations is what you need emerald for...you can also download that from the ubuntu repo (if you want)14:15
Ten-Eightso not everything is in the tar then.14:15
gunndawgmadsailor steve hand isnt showing up anything in the package manager14:16
madsailorit is....but the  yamet-mod.emerald is the window decorations...for which you need emerald14:16
Ten-EightI have it and have the mod installed.14:16
Ten-Eightthere doesn't appear to be a way to apply it...unless I'm missing it somewhere.14:17
madsailorlook up throught this convo....system, preferences emerald theme manager once emerald is installed from the ubuntu repo14:18
Ten-Eightyep..been there.14:19
madsailorall's well Ten-Eight?14:20
gunndawgmadsailor can I get you to take another look at the matrix theme readme ?14:20
gunndawgI have a question on one more thing14:20
Ten-Eighthow is the window border listed?14:20
Ten-Eightseems that emerald is not applying it's theme.14:21
madsailorgunndawg...it's in one of the font packages.  Type font in the ubuntu software center and it's one of those packages...don't remember which one14:21
gunndawgmadsailor can you open up that readme for the matrix theme once more ?14:22
madsailorTen-Eight,  this theme is in 2 parts the window decoration which is emerald (the part of my screenshot that is mac-esque ) and the rest of it14:23
madsailorTen-Eight, you have the emerald part squared?14:23
madsailorgunndawg, ..opening...what do you want to know?14:24
gunndawgscroll down to the ~CMATRIX MATRIX PROGRAM part14:24
gunndawghow do I set that up ?14:24
gunndawg./configure (first step of that instruction) gives an error in terminal14:25
Ten-EightI have emerald installed and the mod imported just fine. everything looks great except the window frame/titlebar stuff. still showing the previous theme (shiki-colors dust).14:25
Ten-Eightdo I need to get compix fusion manager to get that working?14:25
madsailorgunndawg, that's the cube plugin for compiz that you didnt want to install....to install follow directions on the download site or in the readme link14:26
gunndawgmadsailor alright14:26
madsailorten-eight - right click desktop ->change background_>theme tab_>customize button_>controls-> scroll to HLmatrix14:28
gunndawgmadsailor do you think its possible to change the text box color on webpages to normal and keep the matrix theme the same, sorta ruins websites with black/green text boxes, lol14:28
Ten-Eightgot it14:28
Ten-Eighton the window border, which one do you pick? I don't see one for the matrix theme in the list.14:29
madsailorgunndawg, with linux (nearly) anything is possible....do I know how to do it....sadly, no14:29
gunndawglol ok madsailor, thx anyways14:30
madsailorshould be hl matrix.  if it's not there you need to drag-drop the hlmatrix.tar.gz into the appearances window then follow last instructions14:31
madsailor@ten-eight14:31
gunndawgTen-Eight there was no matrix option for window-border14:32

gunndawgTen-Eight then thats it14:34
gunndawgas long as emearld theme is matrix and controls are matrix then make sure icons are, and your done14:34

madsailoryou imported in emerald already?14:47
Ten-Eightthe yahmet mod is imported.14:47

RakshasaHallo18:47
RakshasaI have a problem. My laptop has 3 primary partition (2 of w7, 1 for data, and an extended). The extended contains two root partition for two separate linux os (ubuntu and  slack) one swap and a shared home (of course for two different username). The first os installed is w7, after this i installed skack and ubuntu with burg. Now i decide to reinstall w7 by deleting and rebuilding only the first two primary partitions. The problem than is that n18:47
Rakshasaow the two root parts are seen either from gparted and ubuntu live as an empy unallocated block. How can i solve this problem without reinstalling from scratch??18:47
seidoswhy not reinstall from scratch?18:50
seidosRakshasa ^18:50
RakshasaSo... what i want to do is only restoring the boot loader18:50
seidoshey, maybe that's what i want to do18:51
seidosmy hard disk is reporting a lot of bad sectors18:51
seidosbut i think it's because my notebook fell on the floor from the bed18:51
Rakshasai but this is impossible because the root partition is unreachable till is seen as an unallocated space.18:51
seidosi'm running off a liveusb because the hard disk is struggling right now.  it is dying :'(18:52
seidosso i can't install gparted right now...18:52
seidosisn't the bootloader installed on the primary partition which has doors7 installed, Rakshasa ?18:54
Rakshasayes it's higly probable that falling down the heads touched the disc..18:54
seidosthen it is probably unsalvagable without special tools :'(18:54
seidosif i could find an SD card i might be able to use that as the OS drive18:55
seidosperhaps through a minimal install18:55
RakshasaNBow i don't remember where the burg installs itself, but i can say i deleted all the two windows primary partition.18:55
seidoshmmm, heads, i was thinking the "reading arm" was the problem18:55
seidosRakshasa: what is the goal for the final state of the system?  ubuntu only installed?  what OS' do you want installed?18:56
RakshasaOK18:56
seidosi should probably review hard drive terminology18:56
seidosah, heads read and write to the platters18:57
seidosinteresting, thanks Rakshasa18:58
Rakshasa... the goal is: Windows on th first partition. Then data partition, then ubuntu on a partition and Kubuntu on another root partition. Burg as selection system at boot18:58
seidosRakshasa: and what is stopping you from doing this?  burg?  i am not familiar with burg.  I assume it is like grub or something.19:00
bethdo97I finally have managed to geet xbuntu running onn my son's computer. However, when I try to shut down the computer I get a warning that a prograam is still running. In the box that opens up it says unknown not responding. How do I find out what it is and make it close and not open. I have rebooted several times and this keeps happening19:00
bethdo97 I checked system monitor and when I open it the only thing that shows as running in system monitor There are multiple things listed at sleeping19:02
seidosbethdo97: well, the first thought that comes to mind is the command "ps aux | grep unknown"19:02
seidosi just ran it, and i had nothing come up...19:03
seidosbethdo97: you could install another window manager, like fluxbox or openbox, or gnome, and see if the same problem happens with them19:04
bethdo97i am new to linux and ubuntu19:04
seidosbethdo97: how new?  i have been using ubuntu for 2 years, but i still consider myself new -_-19:04
bethdo97Wednesday19:04
bethdo97lol19:04
Rakshasawhat is stopping me is that i can't restore ubuntu installations and than the burg because the root partition is seen as unallocated space19:04
bethdo97seidos: Wednesday19:05
bethdo97seidos: About 60 gours19:06
bethdo97hours19:06
seidosRakshasa: i would have to think about it.  i have no idea why / would be seen as unallocated space.  it is seen as unallocated in gparted?  but how are you examining /?  from a different /?  on the same hard disk19:06
seidosbethdo97: ah, humpday.  the hump in the middle of the week...double entejre's are inappropriate19:06
bethdo97seidos: lol19:07
seidosbethdo97: does something like sudo apt-get install fluxbox work from a command line?  then see if you can boot into fluxbox from the...er...menu that starts just before the window manager is selected19:07
seidosthere's a word for it...can't think of it19:07
seidospedro3005: what is the word for the "boot menu" that comes up before the wm is selected?19:08
pedro3005login screen?19:08
seidospedro3005: that might be it.  do you know what package it is?  it's not unity is it?19:09
pedro3005depends on the environment19:09
bethdo97I am teaching myself as I try to get my son's laptop working again19:09
pedro3005gnome has its screen, kde has its screen etc19:09
seidospedro3005: i think openbox and fluxbox share gnome's screen19:10
Rakshasaso what i want do is simply launching the os with an ubu 10.10 live, after mounting the root (of the partition where the root fs is installed) on the live root and managing the boot loader, this restores the os and revert the system to the original state.19:10
seidoscan't say for kde.  haven't used it in some time.19:10
pedro3005because openbox and fluxbox aren't desktop environments19:10
pedro3005they're window managers19:10
seidospedro3005: i said wm19:10
bethdo97seidos: hard drive died - gafe it a nice sendoff with my sledge hammer19:10
bethdo97gavve19:10
pedro3005well yeah still19:10
seidosbethdo97: sledge hammer?  recycling it might have been a better idea19:10
seidosno19:11
bethdo97not after all I have gone thru trying to get this system running again19:11
Rakshasathis trouble is never happened till i use a boot partition.19:11
seidosRakshasa: i'm not sure if it's "simple"...and i really don't know what it is you want to do.  let me try:  1.  boot from live cd.  2. errrr?19:12
seidosRakshasa: i may not be capable of assisting, but i am trying.19:12
Rakshasaok.  the fact are these. I start the lap with the ubuntu live.19:13
seidosRakshasa: ah, you want to use a live cd to recover / on the system that is showing up as "unallocated space" from the live cd?19:13
seidosRakshasa: but if it's showing up as unallocated space, doesn't that mean there is a problem with how the partition is being read, or the state of the partition?19:13
seidosRakshasa: is / encrypted?19:14
RakshasaSo i search for sda8 but the partition isnt, because is merged with another partition and seen from gparted as unallocated space.19:14
bethdo97seidos: actually hadn't had a chance to use aa boot partition yet.  That was what I had in mind when I decided to shut things down19:15
seidosbethdo97: are you spelling words this way on purpose?19:15
Rakshasai think at encryption. but no. The uncommon fact is that the partitions resulting merged from gparted analysis are two.19:15
seidosRakshasa: is english your first language?  it is difficult for me to parse your language efficiently.19:15
Rakshasano19:16
Rakshasaok. listen, i have two ubuntu version: ubuntu and kubuntu ok?19:16
seidosRakshasa: no worries.  just be aware it may take me more time to comprehend.  but, still, even if i do comprehend, i am not sure what i can do.  i only have one OS installed on my system.  i never dual booted it.19:16
seidosRakshasa: ack19:16
Rakshasaevery *ubutnu uses an own partition to store /, these two partition are near.19:17
seidos*ubuntu *its *partitions19:17
seidosnear?19:17
Rakshasanear as for example sda7 and sda8 (near as in number and near as in space).19:18
seidosRakshasa: i am curious, why did you install a separate installation of kubuntu and not just install the kde environment?19:18
seidosRakshasa: ah.  what is the relevance of the proximity of sda7 and sda8?19:19
Rakshasabecause i want try the behavior of kubuntu without any infuence from ubuntu environment or processes19:19
seidosRakshasa: interesting.  are you developing for them?19:20
seidos*to19:20
Rakshasathe rilevance is that now these two partitions are merged in one unallocated block and i don't know why.19:20
seidos*relevance19:20
bethdo97seidos: That will be the next thing I try to figure out.  Evidently there is a known issue with my new computer and haven't had time to figure out that issue out before I had to figure out how to get my son's system working again so he can use it for school19:21
seidoswhoa, that is very strange.  so sda7 and sda8 are merged into one "unallocated block".  i don't know why either.19:21
Rakshasaexactly.19:21
seidossda1, sda2, sda5, sda6 / /home swap ?19:22
seidosi am missing one...19:22
Rakshasai can't mind what happened because the other partitions of extended block and the primary data partition are untouched19:23
seidosthat's strange...gparted is installed on the liveusb19:23
seidosbut during installation, it isn't19:23
seidos*after19:23
seidosRakshasa: you can't mind?  or don't mind?19:23

Rakshasawhen i installe ubuntu and kubuntu w7 was installed before.19:25
seidoshuh, how do run fsck on all fs on /dev/sda19:26
seidosperhaps a wild card19:27
Rakshasano this is a thing that i didn't the fschk, but because if an error occurs or occurred before launching gparted, gparted must see the uncorrect state and notice that.19:28
Rakshasaso i havent any announce and than i didn't any chk.19:28
seidosperhaps running fsck will remap the hard drive...so it will be salvagable until i can replace it19:29

seidossee you soon19:30
eee-banghi all21:02
eee-bangemergency... my desktop suddenly died21:02
bioterror!!21:02
bioterrorexplain more21:02
eee-bangyes, I will.... it suddenly rebooted, then went to a black screen after grub21:04
eee-bangit seems unstable... sometimes I can get to grub, sometimes not... I just managed to boot from cd21:06
eee-bangoh, I did not anyway... it restarted halfway through the booting21:07
eee-bangblack screen, beep sounds21:07
eee-bangbtw, this is kristian-aalborg, logging in from another computer21:08
eee-banghi holstein et al21:08
geirhaStarting to sound like hardware failure to me21:08
eee-banggeirha, yes, that's what I think too21:08
eee-bangbut damn hard to figure out _what_ is wrong21:08
geirhaeee-bang: See if you can boot into the memtest, and run that.21:08
eee-bangfrom a cd?21:09
geirhaI don't remember if the CD has a memtest option, but your grub menu should, unless you have specifically removed it.21:09
bioterrorhas21:10
eee-bangphew... it was still there... I ran a cleanup script, for a moment I feared I'd removed it21:10
eee-bangrunning it now, should take a while21:11
=== eee-bang is now known as kristian-aalborg
kristian-aalborgscary stuff.... seems like I might have to get a new box21:13
bioterrorprobably21:13
kristian-aalborgluckilly, I backed up stuff recently21:14
kristian-aalborgstill a bummer, o/c21:14
geirhaDid you build the computer yourself, or did you buy it pre-built?21:15
kristian-aalborgI think I'll try to get a used Thinkcentre, they seem solid21:15
bioterrorkristian-aalborg, or a hp dc7700/dc780021:16
kristian-aalborggeirha, a mix, actually - I found parts online and had them assembled and sent21:16
kristian-aalborgbioterror, is that a similar system?21:16
bioterrorkristian-aalborg, can be solid as well ;)21:17
bioterrornothing is idiot proof, but they are okay21:17
geirhakristian-aalborg: If it's newer than 5 years, you can probably get that fixed for free.21:17
geirhaAt least, that's the law in Norway. Denmark probably has similar laws.21:17
kristian-aalborgI have some fancy needs re. tv-out and spdif... will see how that meets with a TC/ DC21:18
kristian-aalborggeirha, probably - I'll look into that21:18
kristian-aalborgI hope it's the ram that are borked, that can be fixed easily21:19
geirhaYou could always take the computer apart; remove all components except the harddrives, ram, cpu and motherboard. Then add one and one component until it crashes.21:19
kristian-aalborgholy...21:20
geirhakristian-aalborg: The 5 year "guarantee", we call "reklamasjonsrett" in Norway.21:20
kristian-aalborgwent from memtest to black screen and bad sounds... should not happen, right21:20
kristian-aalborggeirha, so do we, but we spell it properly ;)21:20
geirhaRight, so it's definitely a hardware issue. But whether it was the RAM or some other component is hard to tell.21:21
kristian-aalborgmy power button is blinking frantically now, nothing else happens21:21
geirhaThe motherboard manual may have information on what that means.21:22
geirhaAlso, some motherboards have some led in the back that that can tell you of certain hardware problems. (Also described in the motherboard manual, if any)21:22
geirha*leds21:22
kristian-aalborggeirha, I got this in april 2007 it seems (was this msg lost?)21:44
geirhaappears so21:45
kristian-aalborgbugger21:46
kristian-aalborgmy router depends on the desktop being plugged in, I found out... I must have wired it in a dumb way21:47
kristian-aalborgI changed graphics card and sound card for the desktop, probably blew the guarantee there :/21:48
kristian-aalborghttp://www.guloggratis.dk/computere/stationaer/ibm/annonce/999714421:50
kristian-aalborgI guess I could move stuff from my ugly tower to that one?21:53
geirhaLooks very small. You'll probably need smaller components21:58
kristian-aalborgmakes sense... I just found the model name, looks at specs now22:00
kristian-aalborgguess I could get a new video card for it22:01
geirhaA small one line that would be great as a media player, running mythbuntu.22:03
kristian-aalborgI use my pc for playing movies etc22:06
kristian-aalborgwould anyone have some ideas for diagnosing the current desktop?22:11
seidoskristian-aalborg, what are the symptoms?22:26
kristian-aalborghi seidos22:28
kristian-aalborgwere you here half an hour ago? I posted the symptoms then22:28
seidoskristian-aalborg, hmmm, not sure, my timestamps aren't on in my irc client for some reason -_-22:32
kristian-aalborgseidos, it won't boot properly... sometimes I get to grub... sometimes it goes blank and makes scary noises22:32
kristian-aalborgsometimes, it keeps rebooting22:33
kristian-aalborgI can22:33
kristian-aalborgsorry, small keyboard22:33
kristian-aalborgI can't start anything, none of my OS's or a livecd..22:33
seidoshuh, if livecd doesn't work, sounds like a hardware problem22:34
kristian-aalborgyes, indeed... I tried running memtest, but the box shut down after a while22:35
seidosdesktop?  laptop?22:36
seidosif it's POSTing though, then why wouldn't a livecd work unless there is a problem with the ATA controller?22:37
seidosor perhaps the PS isn't doing it's job22:39
kristian-aalborgseidos, desktop22:39
kristian-aalborgPOSTing?22:40
seidospoint of service test i think22:41
seidosit's the process that systems go through when they first boot22:41
seidosa failed POST usually results in odd beeps22:41
seidoskristian-aalborg, is your cd-rom on the same ata channel as your hard disk?  can you put it on its own channel?22:42
kristian-aalborgseidos, where can I see this? in BIOS?22:42
seidoskristian-aalborg, you have to open your system, and see how the hard disk and cd-rom are cabled.22:42
kristian-aalborgoh damn22:43
seidoskristian-aalborg, though it may be possible to see in the BIOS22:43
seidoschannel 1, primary & secondary, channel 2, primary & secondary22:43
seidossomething like this22:43
kristian-aalborgseidos, will go to bios now - I might lose my wifi, but will be back22:44
seidoskristian-aalborg, good luck22:45
seidos_/\_22:45
kristian-aalborgokay, in bios now22:45
kristian-aalborgseidos, was that praying hands? not seen that before ;)22:45
seidosnamaste kristian-aalborg ^_^22:46
kristian-aalborgI have something called IDE channels22:46
seidosATA, IDE...non-scsi hard drive I/O protocol22:46
kristian-aalborgIDE channel 0 master: cdrom22:47
kristian-aalborgIDE channel 0 slave: none22:47
kristian-aalborgIDE channel 1 master : hd122:47
kristian-aalborgIDE channel 1 slave: none22:47
kristian-aalborginterestingly, my second hdd is not mentioned22:47
seidosis it external?22:48
seidoswell, separate channels...so that isn't it22:48
seidosi am thinking live cd really should work22:48
kristian-aalborgseidos, no, it is in the pc22:48
kristian-aalborgit was giving me some trouble recently, though22:49
seidosso, three things i can think of, 1.  can you make a live usb?  2.  can you try a different cd-rom (disk and/or drive) 3.  power supply22:49
seidoskristian-aalborg, perhaps a separate ide controller card?22:49
kristian-aalborg1 - can't boot from usb ---- 2 - tried a few different cd's already --- 3 how to do that?22:50
kristian-aalborgalso no clue how to change ide controller card (?)22:51
seidoskristian-aalborg, okay.  1.  what about trying the cd's in a different computer?  2.  you would need to acquire a power supply "spare part"22:51
kristian-aalborg1 -  the cd's worked a few days ago22:52
seidosah, so why don't they anymore?22:52
kristian-aalborg2 - I'll have to think if I know someone who could help with that22:52
kristian-aalborgseidos, because the computer is kaput ;)22:53
seidosare you in the los angeles area?  i don't have any spare parts though.  well, i do have a power supply, i think it's a 230W22:53
seidosbut it's in a working system22:53
kristian-aalborgseidos, I am in Denmark but thanks for the thought22:54
kristian-aalborgtrying to boot it, might lose connection22:55
kristian-aalborgI disabled the hdd in bios, let's see what happens22:56
kristian-aalborgcrazy stuff... I'm on the livecd now22:57
seidosdisabling hard drive did something?22:57
seidosoooooooo aaaahhhh22:57
* seidos is amazed by technological magic22:57
kristian-aalborgeither that or it's random when it works22:57
seidoshmmm, perhaps quantum fluctuations in the matrix -_-22:58
kristian-aalborgseidos, it is kind of mysterious as the boot should look for cd's first22:58
seidosbetween socrates, joan of arc, beethoven, ghengis khan, and billy the kid, who would be the best at computers?22:58
kristian-aalborgsocrates22:58
seidosyeah, that was my thought as well22:59
kristian-aalborgonly billy the kid and beethoven would run linux, though22:59
seidosyou don't think joan of arc was a FOSS type of girl?23:00
kristian-aalborgprobably OpenBSD23:00
seidosactually, i don't think any of them would "run" linux.  they would use the easiest tool for their job.23:00
seidosjoan of arc didn't need computers, she had God for her strategic guidance23:00
kristian-aalborghowever, what does this say about my desktop?23:01
seidosoh, sorry, it was the randomness23:01
kristian-aalborgI'm trying enabling the hdd again23:02
kristian-aalborghmm, I can't do that it seems23:04
seidosyou can't reenable the hdd?23:04
seidossounds like the hd problem i had23:04
seidosbut i dropped the hd23:04
kristian-aalborgI much prefer a borked hdd to a borked computer, obviously23:05
seidosyeah, an entirely borked computer is bad and not-good (!good)23:06
kristian-aalborgI'll unplug the entire thing and examine the wires - they were the last thing to cause problems23:06
kristian-aalborgthis means I'll probably get disconnected - thanks a bunch and see ya later23:07
seidosgood luck kristian-aalborg23:07
seidoshope to see you soon ^_^23:07
yax51ok, so I am trying to install perl, but when I run the install it just quits, I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or not....23:23
yax51is there something else I can do?23:23
seidoshey yax51 i dunno.  i just reinstalled, let me try out my perl install23:25
yax51did you run it from synaptic?23:26
seidosyax51, i didn't even have to install it, worked after an install of karmic.  what are you running?  maverick?  lucid?23:26
yax51maverick23:26
seidosyax51, how are you testing it?23:26
seidosdo you have the /usr/bin/perl binary yax51 ?23:27
yax51seidos: I don't think so...I downloaded it from the perl.org website and when I ran the install.sh it goes through asks me some questions, the says "installing" then quits23:29
kristian-aalborgseidos: this is weird... I pressed all the cables and the box started fine23:30
seidosyax51, and you tried from synaptic?  sudo apt-get install perl?23:30
seidoskristian-aalborg, that is weird...what cables did you press?  the ide cables?23:30
yax51seidos, reinstalling from synaptic, and if that doesn't work I'll try the latter23:31
seidosyax51, good luck23:31
kristian-aalborgseidos: whatever I could find23:31
yax51seidos: thanks! I'll let you know23:31
seidoskristian-aalborg, :o  i was hoping to peel back the mystery a bit23:31
kristian-aalborgI noticed the fan for the power supply is rather dirty - computer has been open for a few weeks23:31
kristian-aalborgwil wacuum tomorrow23:32
geirhaYeah, could be processor overheating23:32
seidosi know of someone that has a server in their garage, it is just a motherboard, ps, etc. mounted onto a piece of plywood.  no cover.23:32
kristian-aalborgcpu is 40C now, is that much?23:34
seidosi don't believe it is23:35
geirhaThe limit is probably around 70C23:36
seidoshere's a table i found:  http://www.pantherproducts.co.uk/Articles/CPU/CPU%20Temperatures.shtml23:36
seidoslists various cpus and their max temps.  but yeah, 70C appears to be a good rule of thumb23:36
geirhaThe BIOS will typically have a setting for that23:37
kristian-aalborgI think it may have reached the limit, then powered off23:40
kristian-aalborgweird that the problem persisted, though...23:40
kristian-aalborglike I said, will vacuum tomorrow, then keep an eye on it23:40
yax51ok, so its saying that perl is installed and the latest version, however I can't seem to run it23:41
seidosyax51, well, do you have a perl script to run?23:41
seidosyax51, you can just type "perl" at the command line...but without a script it will just kind of sit there23:42
yax51seidos: aaah that makes sense...23:42
seidosyax51, i have several basic scripts if you want to try one23:43
palhmbsI have a error in my bash profile that gives the error message: bash: warning: here-document at line 40 delimited by end-of-file (wanted `EOF')  -  bash: /etc/bash.bashrc: line 64: syntax error: unexpected end of file23:44
paultagpalhmbs: did you delete teh EOF on line 44 ?23:44
paultagpalhmbs: regardless make it look like:23:44
paultag        cat <<-EOF23:44
paultag        EOF23:45
paultagif you are trying to get rid of that crap23:45
palhmbsthanks - will try23:45
paultagcheers23:45
seidoshey, two pauls23:45

palhmbsseidos, and yes, I now realise what is could be construed as...23:49
seidosoh wait, my mom gave me $30 yesterday ^_^23:49
palhmbsseidos, how old are u? - I'm 3223:50
seidospalhmbs, i can't...i thought it was like "pal" or friend, and hmbs i had no idea23:50
seidospalhmbs, same here, 3223:50
seidos!ot | seidos23:51

palhmbspaultag, I'm not sure, didn't seem to work -- put EOF at the end of .bashrc23:52
palhmbsstill does the same thing23:52
palhmbswould messing with .profile stuff it up to?23:53
paultaghey seidos23:53
paultagpalhmbs: yeah that ctrl + r rocks23:53
paultagpalhmbs: check ~/.bashrc23:53
paultagpalhmbs: but it should be line 40 of that file23:53
paultagpalhmbs: P.S. you should not mess with global files like that23:54
palhmbsmessing with global files is how I learn things23:54
palhmbshe he he23:54
paultaghaha23:54
gunndawgHey is there any way to change the color of text boxes on webpages? I downloaded a theme that I LOVE but it changed the color of text boxes on websites and that kinda takes away/ruins the site23:55
egossetthow do i put my irc nickname on launchpad23:58
kristian-aalborgseidos: cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THRM/temperature - this is the command I use - it keeps giving the temp as exactly 40C - is it working, do you think?23:59
