tripelb!requirements00:39
ubottuHardware requirements to install, boot and comfortably use Xubuntu are listed at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/InstallingXubuntu00:39
tripelbshould link to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements#Lightweight%20GUI%20alternative%2000:39
tripelbI found my answer and am trying to help the next person be able to find them too.00:40
tripelbbecause the page under !requirements doesnt give them.00:40
tripelbsorry, I'm all wrong. I still dont know how the basics for installing xubuntu vary from installing ubuntu. Would like to know.00:42
knometripelb, installing - varies in no way really.00:58
tripelbknome - the ubuntu install requirements page said xubuntu is lighter. I was just curious about it.01:03
tripelbI've got an old Compaq laptop with some windows that I wanted to see if it would work with... ??01:03
tripelbIt has 42Megs RAM. alas. else a lovely machine. Windows something early. I dont remember. 98? at best.01:04
psycho_oreosthat's really small01:04
psycho_oreossome person came in a fair few hours ago asking how they were to run linux on a laptop with 64MB of RAM. I guess you'll need something like puppy linux/ tinycore OS/ dsl01:06
Freddy2hi02:14
Freddy2i've just tried to install 10.10 from 32bit desktop edition, and i always get blocked in the user creation step.. the next button is never enabled.. why?02:14
Freddy2i mean, i choose my name, machine name, username, both passwords (there is a match) but i can't get this button enabled, no matter what i do02:15
AndrewMCFreddy2: is the machine's name all lowercase?02:17
mucusis there a way to transition between work spaces more fluidly than what comes standard?03:03
TheSheepmucus: "fluidly"?03:04
TheSheepmucus: you mean animations?03:05
mucusi guess animations...?03:05
mucuslike let's say i only want to go halfway between desktops?03:06
TheSheepyou can install compiz and get all the fun that comes with it, including flames and wobbly windows03:06
TheSheepah, no03:06
TheSheepthat's not possible03:06
mucusokay then03:06
mucusi tried extending my screen, but that didn't really work either03:06
TheSheepyou can use virtual screen03:07
TheSheephave the desktop larger than your screen and make it scroll03:07
TheSheepthat's doable with X alone03:07
mucusyeah, how would i go about doing that?03:07
mucuspretending i am a real noob to anything linux, including xubuntu03:08
mucus(the first distro i am seriously using though)03:08
TheSheepconsidering that it's 4 am here I'm not really up to walk you through it, I can only give you some pointers where to look. You basically configure your display in xorg.conf to be larger than your screen.03:10
mucusalright, thanks03:11
mrrothis thier a way I can manage with three monitors at work, to have on one screen, windows, on the other osx, and on the third ubuntu desktop03:11
mucusi'd suppose that could be done with virtual machines . . .03:12
TheSheepmucus: there is also Synergy03:14
TheSheepmucus: http://synergy-foss.org/03:14
TheSheepI mean mrroth03:15
mucusalright, so i'd have to shut down xorg, then retrieve the configuration?03:16
mrrothmucus yea virtual machine seem like only way03:42
mrrothTheSheep:  the ubuntu  box will be a remote box, and so is osx03:42
mrrothso synergy is for local boxes right03:42
mrrothmy xp workstation is the one that has the three monitors03:42
lostermazhi11:56
lostermazanybody alive there?12:03

mrrothhow would I do othis, I have three monitors, and one host16:33
mrroththe host os is windows xp16:33
mrrothon my third monitor I want remote or xubuntu desktop is tha tpossible16:33
charlie-tcaHow to make windows do things might be better asked in ##windows16:34
mrrothoh16:34
Sysion xubuntu you need some kind of remote desktop server, for example something for vnc16:35
Sysiand client on windows16:36
BarryMcCockinerGood afternoon, all. My xserver is failing to initialize after installing the proprietary nVidia drivers (via the System > Additional Drivers menu option). I have read in the forums that there is an issue running these drivers with hybrid graphics solutions. I am using xubuntu 10.1017:29
BarryMcCockinerWhat is the name of the package that I need to uninstall to restore the pre-prop-driver state?17:29
Sysinvidia-current propably17:30
BarryMcCockinerOK. Will getting rid of that restore the x conf file(s)?17:30
Sysiypu can manualle erase them, they don't even exist by default anymore17:31
BarryMcCockinerok. I'll reboot back to the prompt and see what happens... then I'll report back in to let you know if it worked. thanks17:31
BarryMcCockinerOK, that did something. I removed nvidia-current. Now it gets to the splash screen and hangs17:41
BarryMcCockinerIs there some way to get to a prompt when it hangs like that?17:41
charlie-tcanow you have to boot to recovery menu, and remove the /etc/X11/xorg.conf17:43
charlie-tcaYou can try getting a prompt using Ctrl+Alt+F217:43
BarryMcCockinerok. I'll try that17:44
BarryMcCockinerI tried that before, but it seemed to be locked pretty hard. I might have to use the livecd and mount the partition17:44
BarryMcCockinerIt might kick me to the prompt after 3 failed boots anyway, like last time17:45
BarryMcCockinerOK, that fixed it. You saved me. thanks17:53
BarryMcCockinerI didn't need the 3d acceleration anyway. I just thought the driver might help with video17:54
nysosymhi there, xubuntu is amazin, thank you18:40
nysosymanyone has precompiled packages for xfce 4.8?18:42
nysosymanyone else have problems with shoutcast radio in exaile?18:44
nysosymcan't download the stream list18:44
nysosymcan't type an at on my macbook19:14
nysosymany solution?19:14
psycho_oreosmight be keyboard binding19:15
nysosymhttp://d59.img-up.net/?up=Screenshot7hy0.png19:18
nysosymi think it's correct19:18
Kurdistanhey guys/girls. how is xubuntu 11.04 with the new xfce version going?19:49
Sysialpha, can be unstable and support at #ubuntu+119:50
nysosymKurdistan, i'll upgrade right now :)19:52
Kurdistannice.19:53
Kurdistanthe new xfce seems to be really promising19:53
KurdistanI hope you guys/girls manage to do well with natty.19:54
nysosymyeah, a shame that there is just a ppa for 10.0419:54
Kurdistanfaster and lighter xubuntu would not be wrong19:54
nysosymin competition with gnome and kde, xubuntu is amazingly fast :D19:54
Sysithere might will be official ppa at least for LTS, maybe even 10.1019:54
charlie-tcaKurdistan: very unstable, broken at times19:55
Kurdistanthats normal, it is :) alpha.19:55
KurdistanI mean when the final version comes I hope for lighter and faster xubuntu 11.04.19:56
charlie-tcapersonally, I find it very nice. It is much slower today, but we just got the new 2.6.38 kernel, too19:57
nysosymdon't like the way, canoncial goes with ubuntu, i don't need a netbook gui on my machine -.-19:57
Sysii tried kde netbook plasma on my netbook, looked cool19:57
nysosymkde is soooo buggy, i don't like it anymore19:58
nysosymstill laggy selecting files, on a 4 core 3ghz machine with 8gb of ram, that's not acceptable19:58
Sysinever noticed19:59
Kurdistancharlie-tca, the new kernel do you think it will be good for xubuntu?20:00
Sysiwith new kde it's always like "yay that one's working now, settings menu is AGAIN different, why that one doesn't work"20:00
charlie-tcasure20:00
charlie-tcathere are enough upgrades in it to improve a lot of things20:00
nysosymmy feeling about kde is, that the integrate feature by feature without testing20:01
nysosym*they20:01
nysosymthere is no optimizing in code20:01
Sysixfce is nice, but i'm getting tired to aiming panels with mouse pointer20:01
nysosymyeah something easy like spotlight would be nice to have20:02
Kurdistancharlie-tca, I will keep an eye on xubuntu then.20:02
nysosymsuper+space, type what you want, enter get it20:03
charlie-tcaSysi: Ctrl+Esc to hit the top panel20:03
Sysinysosym: there is gnome-do but i don't mean that20:03
Kurdistanwhen I tried xubuntu 10.10 and the release before it was not that much faster then ubuntu and lighter like lxde/lubuntu is.20:03
charlie-tcano, I guess that is wrong, too. It only goes to the menu20:03
Sysicharlie-tca: for my experience, in xfce it's bes to put everything in panel and make it wide enough, works quite nicely then20:04
charlie-tcaKurdistan: but you didn't have to add a bunch of stuff to it, either. what do you in Lubuntu to do word-processing?20:04
nysosymSysi you think about a dock? :D20:04
charlie-tcaby default20:04
Sysibut i'm always searching for something weird  and hoping it's nice :P20:04
Kurdistancharlie-tca, I have no problem adding stuff after installation.20:05
Sysinysosym: pretty much, i just don't like any docks i've seen20:05
nysosymSysi, tried osx one?20:05
Kurdistancharlie-tca, xubuntu with xfce is more polished and allround.20:05
charlie-tcabut the fact is, Lubuntu is not ready for you until you do that, right?20:05
Sysinysosym: worse than awn20:05
Kurdistanthat I give you guys cred for.20:05
charlie-tcaand how light is it after you add the apps you need to work with?20:06
Kurdistaneven when I have installed all the thing I need in xubuntu, it is stil faster then xubuntu.20:06
Kurdistanbelieve me.20:06
Kurdistan:) sorry I mean lubuntu20:06
Sysiopenbox is harder to configure than xfwm20:07
Sysi(lxde vs. xfce window managers)20:07
Kurdistansysi thats true.20:08
Kurdistanlike I said in the long run xfce is more polished right now then lxde20:08
Kurdistanmy hope is that xubuntu will be that fast and light.20:08
Kurdistanbecuase I know people that runs xfce under debian and they say it is lighter/faster then xubuntu.20:09
Sysixubuntu is nicely snappy, but has all features20:09
Kurdistanif thats true I dunno.20:09
Sysidifference beetween xubuntu and debian is, for my experience, that xubuntu works :P20:10
Kurdistansysi :) that was a good one.20:10
charlie-tcaum, I think you are going to disappointed. xubuntu does use some of Gnome, and includes stuff for it, because of the way it is built from Ubuntu20:10
charlie-tcaDebian doesn't do that, so it will be lighter20:10
Kurdistancharlie-tca I see.20:11
Kurdistanany way I think xubuntu will rock.20:11
charlie-tca+120:12
Kurdistan:) I am in love with all buntus.20:12
Sysiyou can get lighter xubuntu if you install it more debianish way20:12
Kurdistansysi thats true.20:18
nysosymcross your fingers, for my 11.04 upgrade :D20:32
Kurdistan:)20:33
=== jwkokc is now known as jk_
nysosymseams fine :)20:37
charlie-tcanysosym: great! support will be in #ubuntu+1 if you have problems20:40
jk_question -- I'm running two supposedly-identical Lucid systems, both with automatic update enabled. Several days ago one of them got a kernel update to 2.6.32-28. The other is still at 2.6.32-27 and checking manually reports that it is up to date. Since the move to 28 was a security update, what gives?20:43
charlie-tcahow are you updating?20:45
charlie-tcajk_: try opening a terminal on the one still at -27, type "sudo apt-get update" without the quotes and hit enter20:46
charlie-tcathen use "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" without the quotes20:47
jk_charlie-tca, won't that do a full distribution upgrade to Meerkat? I definitely don't want to lose the LTS installation on this machine!20:50
jk_charlie-tca, to answer your question, through system>update manager when not set up automatically. The one that did update was automatic.20:51
charlie-tcano, that will do a full update to the 10.04 system20:51
charlie-tcait takes more than that to upgrade versions if you are running Xubuntu20:53
jk_charlie-tca, after doing the apt-get update, the "linux" generic package that supposedly keeps everything set to the latest still shown -27 as its dependency. Guess I'd better compare the sources.lst files of the two systems to make certain they both address the same repositories!20:59
charlie-tcadid you also do the dist-upgrade command?21:00
charlie-tcaIf not, it did not update the system, only the package list21:00
jk_charlie-tca, no, I was just checking the package list first. Then the thought occurred to me that the one that did do the update might have a different set of repositories...21:02
charlie-tcathen you would be right, after doing "  update ", it did not change anything. It won't21:02
charlie-tcabecause it just updated the package list21:02
jk_charlie-tca, I just did the dist-upgrade; here's its final report: 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.21:03
Sysi64bit xubuntu has nowdays native 64bit flash plugin?21:04
charlie-tcajk_: and uname -a shows the -27? Have you restarted it lately?21:04
jk_charlie-tca, yes and yes. going to compare the sources.lst files now.21:05
charlie-tcayup21:05
Sysi..that wasn't 64bit disk image21:07
jk_charlie-tca, solved. The one that did update includes the lucid-updates repository; the one that didn't, doesn't. Guess I'd better add it to this machine! Many thanks.21:08
Kurdistanhave good night.21:09
charlie-tcaYou are welcome21:09
KurdistanI am going to bad. I hope all the buntu dist. the best.21:09
nekoCATHello.  I just switched to the daily build.  It looks nice but I have some questions and comments.21:42
nysosym#ubuntu+121:42
nekoCATIs there a channel like that for xubuntu?21:43
nysosymyou can use that channel :)21:43
nysosymi know it's kinda strange ^21:44
charlie-tcaThat is the channel for all development versions, kubuntu/ubuntu/xubuntu21:44
nekoCATThanks.  I'll head there then.21:44
nysosymnp21:44
nysosymshould be named to canoncial+1 :D21:44
charlie-tcawhy? Canonical has nothing to do with it. It is a support channel for development versions, not for canonical support21:45
LivHello22:10
LivI have an issue installing Xubuntu 10.10. Would anyone be available to help?22:11
charlie-tcaPlease ask your question all in one line. All of us are volunteers and will attempt to answer if we know.22:11
LivGreat, thanks. I prepared the partitions manually using gparted: sda5 for / (formatted ext3), sda6 for swap, sda7 for /home (my old partition, unformatted) and sda8 for /boot (formatted ext2). Then I chose manual partitioning (or whatever the name is in ubiquity) and assigned the partitions as described previously, and made sure not to format any partition (they were all prepared with gparted). The installer launched just fine, and now it hanged22:19
Livat "ubuntu CRON [..]: (root) CMD ( cd / && run-parts --report /etc/cron.hourly)" in the terminal. Above the terminal the message is 'Removing conflicting operating system files'. It's exactly one our since it stuck. The laptop doesn't seem to be doing anything. What should I do next? Reboot? Leave computer overnight? Thanks22:19
Liv*hour22:23
charlie-tcano22:24
charlie-tcait has to be allowed to erase and reformat the / partition22:24
charlie-tcaIt probably got stuck trying to figure out what to do, if it can't do that22:24
charlie-tcasince it can't replace the files on root, now22:25
charlie-tcaIt probably is stuck. kill it and start over is what I usually do at that pointy22:25
charlie-tcas/pointy/point22:25
Livhmm, strange, i should reformat / even if it was already erased and formatted? But I understand. Do I kill 'ubiquity'?22:29
charlie-tcayup22:29
charlie-tcaI agree, strange way to have to do it22:30
Livok, thanks, I'll try it tomorrow. I just hope that the installer didn't mess my Win and Home partitions. Cheers22:31
charlie-tcaMe too22:33
Livit seems ok. Home was strangely mounted to /mnt/tmpmount, but otherwise both partitions seem present and fine. bye22:38
mark76I really wish I didn't have to restart everytime I add something23:04
mark76Oops. Wrong tab23:05
YcareneOk, this is weird, if I add my user to the vboxusers group, I can't login into my user account through xfce, but if I remove them from it, I can log in.23:26
DoctorTruthHow do you remove a windows based program from Ubuntu that does not work properly from wine? Is there a way to un-install the files?23:33
