egossetthi NewLad and cprofitt00:03
yax51hi!!00:03
NewLadcould someone please help me00:03
palhmbsgunndawg, i think you would have to try asking on a different channel for that specific browser00:03
NewLadshould be a basic problem but im new to ubuntu00:03
holsteinNewLad: gedit is a basic program00:03
holsteinNewLad: is that all you're looking for?00:04
NewLadi just downloaded lucid lynx and installed it on my netbook...when i tried it from the USB the wireless network worked...after i installed it it told me it couldnt find the dricer00:04
palhmbsNewLad, go ahead - any and all here will try their best to help you00:04
NewLadi tried to activate it but got an erroramssage00:05
holsteinNewLad: what error message00:05
holsteinno network?00:06
holsteinNewLad: the easiest way to do it is to wire the machine up00:06
holsteinto wired internet00:06
NewLadit didn even start the download00:06
holsteinto download the proprietary bit00:06
NewLadthat should fix the pproblem do you think?00:07
holsteinNewLad: not sure00:07
holsteini would expect the live disc to behave similarly to the install00:07
NewLadthats what i thought00:07
NewLadstrange eh?00:07
NewLadanyhow, i give it a shot00:07
NewLadcheers00:08
holsteinNewLad: good luck00:08
seidoshey paultag00:15

NewLadhi there00:42
NewLadsorry me again00:42
NewLadthat wiring it up didnt work but i got the errormassage her00:42
seidos*errormessage00:43
holsteinNewLad: shoot00:43
holsteinyou can use pastebin if its big00:43
holsteinhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/00:43
NewLadfailes to fetch http:br.archrive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/poolmain/m/manpages/manpages-dev_3.24-1ubuntu1_all.de could not resolve br.archrive.ubuntu.com00:45
holsteinNewLad: are you online?00:45
NewLadyes under windows00:45
holsteinon the machine in question00:45
NewLadits the same one00:45
NewLadbut no00:46
holsteinwhen you are booted up into buntu00:46
holsteinare you online?00:46
NewLadnot under the installed version, the usb one works00:46
holsteinNewLad: what wireless card?00:47
holsteinhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/ the output of lspci00:47
holsteinwell, actually00:47
holsteinthat will be difficult without internet00:48
holsteinjust run lspci00:48
holsteinand tell me what the network controller is00:48
NewLadim here under windows right now00:48
holsteinright on00:48
NewLadnot sure where to rund lspci00:49
holsteini suppose you can google the model00:49
holsteinand find it that way00:49
holsteinor look in the device manger or whatever00:49
holsteinin windows00:49
NewLadwell the card is broadcom 802.11n network adapter00:49
holsteinso, you probably need a proprietary driver00:50
NewLadok00:50
holsteinthe easy way is to wire up the network00:50
NewLadi suppose i cant donwload it under windows and use it under linux, can i?00:50
holsteinNewLad: sure00:50
holsteinhttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx00:51

NewLadi downloaded the first one01:19
NewLadis that correct?01:19
holsteinNewLad: depends on your device01:19
NewLadwhat would you need to know to determin that01:20
holsteini usually run lspci01:20
NewLadsorry now, this is all new to me01:20
holsteinNewLad: no worries01:20
holsteinits just challenging since you're not in buntu now01:20
holsteintakes longer :/01:20
holsteinfor you01:20
NewLadthanks for you help i appreciate this01:21
holsteinNewLad: if i were you01:21
holsteini would just DL a bunch of them01:21
NewLadim listening01:21
NewLadah ok01:21
NewLadmakes sense all right01:21
holsteinhttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx01:21
holsteinwhatever it says there01:21
holsteinunder 'no internet access'01:21
holsteinthe buntu packages might be easier to use01:22
holsteinstill, i would just get as many as possible01:22
holsteinNewLad: its interesting that it works with the USB stick01:22
holsteinand not now01:22
holsteinNewLad: i would also01:22
holsteinbefore doing anything else01:23
holsteinfully shutdown the machine01:23
holsteinmaybe even take the battery out01:23
holsteinand boot back up01:23
NewLadok ill try that as well01:23
holsteinNewLad: just gotta try some things01:24
holsteintotally do-able01:24
holsteinNewLad: what computer?01:24
gunndawgCould someone tell me how to change the color of text boxes that appear on webpages ?01:25
holsteinsometimes you can find helpful info in wikis or forums by googleing ubuntu and the exact model01:25
gunndawgmy current theme makes them black01:25
holsteingunndawg: html01:25
holstein?01:25
holsteinyou'd have to code the page01:25
gunndawgholstein, no I mean default, becaue every page has black text boxes based on my theme01:25
gunndawgso its not the sites html01:25
holsteinOIC01:25
holsteingunndawg: that should be in the theme setting01:26
gunndawgI use both an emerald and a GTK theme01:26
gunndawgso which settings ?01:26
holsteinsystem - preferences - appearances01:26
holsteincustomize01:26
holsteincolors tab?01:27
gunndawgoh I see, for Input Boxes01:27
holsteini would assume input boxes01:27
holstein*not positive01:27
gunndawghmm so no way to keep it default for webpages but keep them black for my GUI01:27
gunndawgdang01:27
holsteinhmmm01:27
holsteinim sure theres some way01:27
gunndawgI am hoping so01:28
holsteinchromium can ignore the theme01:28
holsteinsystem theme01:28
gunndawgoh it can ?01:28
holsteinAFAIK01:28
gunndawgI use firefox, but should probably use chrome01:28
holsteinnah01:28
holsteintheres probably a plugin for FF too01:28
holsteinits just never come up for me01:29
NewLadso i donwloaded a few of them drivers...when im under linux how do i actually install them/01:29
holsteinmaybe http://askubuntu.com/questions/8336/how-can-one-make-firefox-ignore-my-gtk-theme-entirely01:29
gunndawgholstein, care to help me find one ? ;)01:29
gunndawgI am reading a possible solution holstein01:30
holsteinNewLad: depends01:30
holsteinthe .deb packages are click and run01:30
holsteinkinds like a .exe would be01:30
NewLadthers never just a straight forward answer, is there =D01:30
holsteinother that that01:30
holsteinother than that*01:30
holsteinit depends on the package01:31
holsteinthere is usually documentation though01:31
NewLadmhm mhm i just plau around a bit and hope for the best ;)01:31
holsteinabout what you need, and how to install01:31
NewLadthanks so far holstein01:31
holsteinNewLad: the .deb's are easy :)01:31
holsteinand preferred01:31
holsteinthe .debs from the repos01:31
NewLadi shall try it so01:32
gunndawgholstein I think it might just be a matter of using a diff theme in firefox via tools > addons >themes, gonna test now01:32
holsteinyeah01:32
holsteinthat looks easy01:32
holsteini was just getting around to checking that link01:32
holsteinmore thoroughly01:32
gunndawgholstein, yep, firefox even has a ubuntu theme ;) fixed my text box problem :)01:33
holstein:)01:33
gunndawgthe tabs still use my GTK theme though, meh01:34
gunndawgoh well01:34
gunndawgholstein, nevermind it didnt fix my text box problem01:34
holstein:/01:34
gunndawggoogles next box is normal, but then I go to youtube and its still black01:34
holsteinenv GTK2_RC_FILES=/usr/share/themes/Simple/gtk-2.0/gtkrc firefox01:35
holsteinwhat does that do?01:35
gunndawgwas just about to try that01:35
gunndawgbut I dont want it to kill my GTK theme01:35
gunndawgi'll give it a go01:35
holsteini just ran it01:36
gunndawgit indeed works01:36
holsteincool01:36
holsteinso you got a couple options then01:36
gunndawgwonder what other themes I can use with that method01:38
gunndawgthis one is very very plain, lol01:38
holsteini guess you can look in /usr/share/themes01:38
gunndawgyeah, I'll also need to make a shell script01:39
gunndawgto launch a browser01:39
holsteinmaybe Dust01:39
holsteinor one of the not-so-dark ones01:39
gunndawgholstein, I use a matrix green/black theme, so dark wouldnt be so bad ;)01:39
midhunohi all01:43
gunndawgholstein, you there ?01:49
holsteinsure01:49
holsteinwhaddup01:49
gunndawgseems like no matter what theme I plug in there, it doesnt change01:50
gunndawgits always "simple"01:50
gunndawgtried redmond, dust, etc01:50
holsteinmake sure you got the jargon right01:50
holstein /use/share/themes/Dust01:51
holsteinnot dust or whatever01:51
holsteinother than that, im nor sure01:51
holsteinnot*01:51
gunndawg#!/bin/bash01:52
gunndawgenv GTK2_RC_FILES=/usr/share/themes/Dust/gtk-2.0/gtkrc firefox01:52
gunndawgthats the shell script I have been running01:52
holsteingunndawg: hmmm01:53
holsteinits working for me01:53
gunndawghm yeah it might have changed, but still black text boxes01:53
holsteini tried Simple, Dust and Redmond01:53
gunndawglet me try another one01:53
gunndawgalright Redmond works01:54
gunndawgits a pretty basic theme01:54
holsteinyou can probably find one that will hit some happy middle ground01:55
gunndawghoping so, not all of them work with this method however01:56
gunndawgI am trying them out01:56
holsteinmodern, darkish, without black boxes01:56
gunndawgmost of these do not work01:58
gunndawgonly found 2 or 3 that do01:58
holsteininteresting01:58
gunndawggrrr :(01:59
holsteinseems like whichever i try works01:59
gunndawgreally :?01:59
holsteinmust have something to do with the theme you're running01:59
holsteinZenyellow didnt seem to work02:00
gunndawgyeah dang, wonder if chrome is a better choice02:00
gunndawgI dont even have Zenyellow in my themes02:00
holsteinmaybe just tweaking your theme a bit02:01
holsteini used to try the dark themes02:01
gunndawgwell it seems if I tweak the "input box" color it really screwes up my theme02:01
holsteinand gave up on them02:01
gunndawgthough it fixes the black box problem in firefox, it really screws my theme02:01
holsteinlooks slick02:02
holsteinas long as you dont need to read anything ;)02:02
gunndawglol02:02
gunndawgits pretty easy on the eyes for me02:02
gunndawgI quite like it02:02
gunndawgwanna see a screenshot ?02:02
holsteinsure02:02
gunndawgok hang on02:02
gunndawghttp://tinypic.com/r/2vtwdbr/702:04
gunndawgyeah the background/wallpaper might be a bit intrusive on the eyes, might change that02:04
holsteinhehe02:05
holsteinyeah, a bit too much contrast for me02:05
holsteinslick :)02:05
gunndawgheh02:05
gunndawgjust need to fix the browser, wonder if chrome would be a fix02:05
holsteinit'll give you something else to tweak about for a few days ;)02:06
gunndawgyeah, i guess02:07
gunndawghttp://tinypic.com/r/xc3gcy/702:08
gunndawgthat pic shows my dilema02:08
gunndawgyou can see how it would be annoying02:08
holsteineh02:09
holsteinwhen i was doing it02:09
holsteini just went with it02:09
holsteini thought it was kinda cool02:09
gunndawgwhen you were doing what? lol02:09
holsteina black theme like that02:09
gunndawgoh ok02:10
gunndawgyeah it would be ok if every webpage on the net was a black/green theme ;)02:10
holsteini think it was black a green too02:10
gunndawgbut as a web developer my self, I am very OCD when it comes to styles02:10
gunndawgseeing those black text boxes and green text makes me wanna vomit, I am very picky as a developer02:10
gunndawgIt looks great as my GUI, but when it carries over to the browser then its not so pretty02:11
holsteini theme the terminal like that still02:13
gunndawgyeah02:13
holsteingreen/black02:13
gunndawgdang, now "Simple" doesnt even work right when it launches02:14
gunndawgit used to02:14
gunndawgok how do I get chrome on here? lol02:15
holsteini like env GTK2_RC_FILES=/usr/share/themes/Weightless-industry/gtk-2.0/gtkrc firefox02:15
holsteingunndawg: sudo apt-get install chromium02:15
holsteingunndawg: sudo apt-get install chromium-browser02:15
holstein^^02:15
gunndawgk downloading it02:15
gunndawgthis damn thing is gonna force me to write my own browser if it doesnt fix it, lol02:16
gunndawgI've done it before on windows02:16
gunndawgholy crap chrome is awesome, problem solved02:17
gunndawgit even utilizes my GTK theme as black/green for the chrome GUI but doesnt mess with the webpages02:17
gunndawgso now chrome actually looks like it belongs on my system, without messing up the pages02:17
gunndawgholstein, chrome even has a option for "Use GTK Theme"02:23
holsteingunndawg: no mp3 support out of the box02:24
holsteinwith chromium02:24
holsteinbut you can copy the plug in over from chrome02:24
ddecatorfirefox 4.0 works better on my system than chromium. just sayin', haha02:25
holsteinddecator: its fast again right?02:25
gunndawgddecator, but firefox has complications with my GTK theme02:26
ddecatorholstein: yup, much faster than 3.6, seems to load as fast as chromium for me02:26
gunndawggives me black text boxes, etc02:26
holsteinff4 is not quite as peppy as chromium02:26
holsteinon my system02:26
ddecatorgunndawg: such as? the metacity theme should work fine, and you can use a persona to make it blend in better02:26
holsteinBUT very close02:26
gunndawgddecator if you wanna show me how then great, I can show you a screenshot of what its doing if you want02:26
ddecatoryah, cold startup is a little slower, but not bad02:27
ddecatorgunndawg: i can try to help, sure02:27
gunndawghttp://tinypic.com/r/xc3gcy/702:27
gunndawgthats what it does with firefox02:27
gunndawgvery very ugly for displaying webpages, I use a matrix green/black GTK theme and it looks great as a GUI, but shouldnt carry over to my browser02:28
ddecatorhm, well you can try using a persona, but i'm not sure if that would change the text color at all02:29
gunndawgddecator, im open to giving it a try, not familiar with personas however02:29
ddecatorgunndawg: http://www.getpersonas.com/en-US/02:29
ddecatoryou can hover the cursor over them to preview them02:30
ddecatorshould work with 3.6+02:30
gunndawglet me try02:31
ddecatorplus using small icons would save you screen real-estate02:32
gunndawgthey even have an animated matrix one which would be great for my GTK theme02:32
gunndawghowever no, personas do not fix the problem02:32
gunndawgstill ugly black text boxes, lol02:32
ddecatorhm, yah, i'm not sure that can be helped without changing the theme02:33
ddecatori'm guessing it'd still happen with 4.002:33
gunndawgchromium seems to have gotten it right by allowing you to actually use ur GTK theme as a theme02:34
gunndawgand even without using ur GTK theme in chromium, just using the default setup/theme doesnt show black text boxes02:34
kendrickLeiterHey, I need some input. I installed a DLink WDA2320 on a desktop; Ubuntu 9.04 won't recognize the hardware? Thoughts?02:34
ddecatoryes and no. chromium just allows you to use the theme to change the colors of the window decoration, but that doesn't integrate the entire theme as much as firefox. depending on the theme, one or the other may look better02:35
gunndawgddecator, I guess the bottom line is, chromium displays webpages as they were inteded to be, without carrying my GTK theme settings over to the text boxes, buttons, etc02:35
ddecatorgunndawg: and i'm just saying that that's true, but some people like their webbrowser to use their theme so it integrates with the system better :)02:36
gunndawgddecator, but I cant use my theme in firefox without it ruining the look, and flow the the website, black text boxes on white bakgrounds just kills it02:37
gunndawgand looks terrible02:37
gunndawgso there has to be some sort of happy medium02:37
holsteinkendrickLeiter: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=38783202:38
holsteinmight need backports?02:38
holsteini would check lspci02:38
holsteinthen just google around i suppose02:38
holsteinmaybe try some other live CD's02:38
holsteinsee if anything auto-magical happens02:38
kendrickLeiterThanks. Had found that thread already off Google, but will try the live CD and see if it helps02:41
holsteindoes it show up in lspci?02:42
kendrickLeiterI'm very new...what is lspci?02:43
holsteinkendrickLeiter: open up a terminal02:43
holsteinand run02:43
holsteinlspci02:43
holsteinyou should see the device listed there02:43
kendrickLeiterAhhh. Thank you. Will check and see right now02:43
holsteindoesnt mean that its going to work02:44
holsteinbut its a good first step02:44
holsteingotta run...02:45
kendrickLeiterthanks for your help02:45
kendrickLeiterHey, I need some input. I installed a DLink WDA-2320 on a desktop; Ubuntu 9.04 won't recognize the hardware? Thoughts?02:54
MrChrisDruifkendrickLeiter: You could check google and see what is says....or try ubuntu 10.10 (9.04 isn't LTS)02:58
kendrickLeiterI don't have a means of backing up; and I'm worried about losing data. Going to 10.10 from a live CD, is there a cause for concern?03:01
gunndawgsweet, I just transformed my laptop into a desktop station. took the desktop monitor off the desk, plopped down the laptop and plugged in an extra mouse and keyboard03:06
gunndawgso much easier03:06
MrChrisDruifkendrickLeiter: Well...."install" from a liveCD (without a separate /home partition) means that everything is wipe03:08
MrChrisDruifUpgrade from current installation isn't ideal, I've had issues in the past after a version update03:08
MrChrisDruifversion=release03:08
gunndawgIs Pidgin still the best alternative for using AIM, and MSN messengers on ubuntu ?03:08
kendrickLeiterThanks; I almost lost my data.03:08
JackyAlcinegunndawg: It's your best bet.03:10
JackyAlcinegunndawg: I even use it for iRC.03:10
MrChrisDruifgunndawg: In my eyes; yes03:10
gunndawgJackyAlcine, I prefer Weechat-curses for my IRC, its more of a terminal based/style client03:11
MrChrisDruifBut Empathy is also multi-protocol...but I've had a bug with it...03:11
gunndawgJackyAlcine,MrChrisDruif, I'll give Pidgin a shot, thx03:11
JackyAlcinegunndawg: I chose Pidgin primarily because of its extensibility. I personally love software you can "plug on" to.03:12
MrChrisDruifkendrickLeiter: But try to find a way of backing up your data, even upgrading can (in extremely rare cases) remove user data03:12
gunndawgJackyAlcine, what do you mean by that? (curious)03:12
JackyAlcinegunndawg: Well, I left Empathy because of its lack of a plugin structure, and Pidgin allows any to just create and install a plugin. Personally, I like adding little features to programs that ease my use. Like in Chrome, or in LibreOffice, or even in IDEs such as NetBeans or Geany.03:14
MrChrisDruifgunndawg: There are lots and lots of plug-ins available for Pidgin03:14
gunndawgJackyAlcine, MrchristDruif, sounds excellent. I am a bit of a manipulator my self, sounds great03:14
gunndawgJackyAlcine, MrChrisDruif, I have got my entire GUI set up with a GTK and emerald theme to mimick the matrix ;)03:15
JackyAlcineI have a plugin for Pidgin that allows you to watch YouTube videos in the window, or share a screenshot.03:15
JackyAlcine:D lol03:15
gunndawgI just need to find a dock that has a matrix style green/black theme and it'll be complete03:15
MrChrisDruifgunndawg: I saw something like that pass this day...03:16
gunndawgMrChrisDruif saw a matrix styled dock ?03:16
MrChrisDruifJackyAlcine: which plug-in is that? :-/03:16
MrChrisDruifAnd no, but someone was asking questions about installing some matrix theme...03:17
MrChrisDruifI could try to read back, but it was probably you :)03:17
gunndawgMrChrisDruif, oh ok, its a great theme, loving it, bit tricky to set up however03:17
JackyAlcineMrChrisDruif: http://code.google.com/p/pidgin-embeddedvideo/ for video03:17
JackyAlcineAnd for screenshos: http://code.google.com/p/pidgin-sendscreenshot/03:17
MrChrisDruifGreat, thanks JackyAlcine :)03:18
MrChrisDruifI'll have a look tomorrow03:18
JackyAlcineNo problem.03:18
gunndawgI am also using a terminal screenlet which embeds a terminal window of my sizing to the desktop, pretty neat03:18
gunndawggot quiet in here03:27
JackyAlcinegunndawg: Sorry, I'm a developer and I'm under the heat of pushing out to deadlines. =x03:29
JackyAlcinegunndawg: If you're not looking for help though, head to #ubuntu-beginners-offtopic03:29
gunndawgJackyAlcine, no help needed at the moment, I am a developer as well, thats why I ventured to linux to see what I can do here03:30
JackyAlcinegunndawg: Are you interested in helping with Unity? There's currently a class session in #ubuntu-classroom about it.03:30
yax51ok so the resolution on my screen got changed and now I can't access the menus to change it back, is there a shortcut key to use?03:31
gunndawgJackyAlcine, will give it a look! thx03:32
JackyAlcinegunndawg: You won''t be able to talk though, go to #ubuntu-classroom-chat to ask questions and talk with peers.03:32
JackyAlcineIt'll be redirected to #ubuntu-classroom by the instructors.03:32
gunndawgWhat is the unity project ?03:33
MrChrisDruifyax51: Alt+F2 > Monitors ?03:33
JackyAlcinegunndawg: It's a new desktop interface for Ubuntu. If you're curious about it, you should test-run Natty Narwhal Alpha 1 and see for yourself.03:34
seidos!unity03:34
ubot2Unity is a shell for GNOME, but it is not GNOME-shell. See http://unity.ubuntu.com and http://www.jonobacon.org/2010/10/31/unity-some-further-clarification-points/ for more information. Have a question, check http://askubuntu.com/questions/tagged/unity03:34
MrChrisDruifAnd the desktop doesn't move with the mouse?03:34
gunndawgoh I've seen Natty before03:34
JackyAlcineI think the Ubuntu One setup is fantastic now, it looks too cool to me.03:34
MrChrisDruifgunndawg: Or run the netbook remix, it also go Unity, but not in the way like natty is going to get03:35
holsteinhow about alt-F2 gnome-display-properties03:35
holsteinyax51:03:35
gunndawgMrChrisDruif I'd like to mess with Natty a bit more, but think I'll wait until it progresses in terms of development03:35
MrChrisDruifgunndawg: Hence I suggested netbook remix...it's available for 10.10 and 10.04 if I'm not mistaken :)03:36
JackyAlcinegunndawg: I love playing with dangerous code that's not perfected ;)03:36
gunndawgI am also quite new to Ubuntu, as you can tell by now I am sure, Not sure I'd be of much use poking around unpolished code ;) could fry my own hardware03:37
yax51holstein: thanks that worked03:37
holstein:)03:37
gunndawgI have spent the last 2 days just personalizing, and customizing the look and feel. Havent even gotten into the nitty gritty of what this system can do, heh03:38
MrChrisDruifgunndawg: I'm "customizing" every day :)03:38
MrChrisDruifI'm gonna make a deviation of the Elementary Icon set...03:39
gunndawgMrChrisDruif, I do not doubt it, its been quite an addicting adventure so far, I find my self tweaking settings into the early AM hours03:39
MrChrisDruifI think they've got too much of the same color....gonna change the folders with the orange ones from Ubuntu :P03:40
gunndawgjust now put a translucent terminal window on the desktop03:40
MrChrisDruifBut I'll be off.....twenty to five AM here :P03:40

gunndawgGnea..06:44
JackyAlcineHey, gunndawg, you're still around. lol.06:46
JackyAlcinegunndawg: And Pidgin supports video chat.06:47
Guest46477hi guys, I'm having some problems compiling software from source code. can anybody help me :)06:48
gunndawgJackyAlcine06:49
gunndawghow do I get to task manager06:49
gunndawgI need to close some processes06:49
Guest46477I have managed to download and extract the contents of the .tar file but beyond that I get stuck.06:50
JackyAlcinegunndawg: You're a Windows user. :D Open System Monitor if you can, open a terminal and type in gnome-system-monitor. IF you can't do neither of that, switch to a TTY and run top, and when you find the process name, run killall <processname>06:51
JackyAlcineGuest46477: Usually source distros incorporate a configure/auto.conf file. Do you see that?06:51
Guest46477JackyAlcine: sorry is that directed at me?06:52
gunndawggot it Dackyalcine, now why did you want me to install video chat plug-in?06:52
JackyAlcinegunndawg: You asked what supported video chat  in Ubuntu ;)06:52
JackyAlcineand Guest46477: yeah, the one with your name, I'm helping you out.06:53
Guest46477JackyAlcine: Let me check the directory - one moment06:54
Guest46477JackyAlcine: yes there is a file by the name of configure06:55
JackyAlcineGuest46477: Alright, now navigate to that directory in a terminal window (cd <directory>).06:56
Guest46477JackyAlcine: done06:56
JackyAlcinerun ./configure06:56
Guest46477JackyAlcine: I ran it and got the following error message: configure: error: in `/home/alvin/Downloads/alienarena-7.50':06:57
Guest46477configure: error: C++ compiler cannot create executables06:57
Guest46477JackyAlcine: It's a game06:57
JackyAlcineThere isn't a autoconf file?06:58
Guest46477JackyAlcine:let me double check06:58
Guest46477JackyAlcine: not that I can see06:58
JackyAlcineGuest46477: alright run 'make' in that folder.06:59
gunndawgJackyAlcine, I never asked what supported video chat, lol06:59
Guest46477JackyAlcine: ok06:59
JackyAlcineGuest46477: Just for reference, there should be a README and INSTALL file in that directory explaining the proper rules for compiling.06:59
Guest46477JackyAlcine: make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found.  Stop.07:00
Guest46477JackyAlcine: the readme file specifies the same thing   $ ./configure07:01

gunndawgTryin to figure out what else I wanna do with my setup07:22
gunndawgI would use a dock but cant find one that uses a matrix theme to match the rest of my GUI07:23
JackyAlcinegunndawg: You looked at CarioDock?07:23
Guest81145I would recommend AWN07:25
Guest81145It's stable fast and unobtrusive07:25
gunndawgJackyAlcine, no, is it good ?07:30
JackyAlcinegunndawg: It's pretty flexible, can support OpenGL, and has a bunch of themes, I'd believe that there's one for you.07:31
gunndawgJackyAlcine, will give it a look!07:32
JimboHi I am trying to install a lightweight version of ubuntu on an old Toshiba 1800 Has a trident video card any clues as to which (old) version may install easily ??07:35

gunndawgoh ok07:58
JackyAlcinegunndawg: They might have something similar to it, there's a good chance of it.07:58
gunndawgThey do not have a seperate section for cairo dock themes so its kinda hard to sort thru all their stuff07:59
gunndawgif I could get a lime green sorta theme, that'd be sufficient07:59
JackyAlcinegunndawg: Right click the dock and go to the settings, there's a list of themes in there.07:59
gunndawgJackyAlcine, aye, not very sutiable ones ;)08:00

gunndawgandrew_46, yes, and so far its pretty cool lookin08:03
gunndawgjust need to get a theme for Cairo Dock08:03
gunndawgwith all the effects, colors, emerald themes, GTK, etc... opening a simple terminal box looks like im ready to jack into the matrix, lol08:04
andrew_46gunndawg: Not many people know that a recent version of MPlayer will allow you to play movies back with a Matrix video out setting08:04

gunndawgand what those little spacers are for because so far I have 2 icons for irc chat window, only need the 1, not sure why its showing 208:06

gunndawgmeh, that might be to much08:31
gunndawgI really like the green/black theme though, and the green glow around windows08:31
andrew_46But where is the dock?08:32
gunndawgand the Chromimum browser uses your theme for its browser08:32
gunndawgso its all set up for my browser also08:32
gunndawgandrew_46 I turned the dock off because I couldnt get it to function how I wanted08:33
andrew_46gunndawg: More work ahead :)08:33

gunndawgJackyAlcine, what are some decent C and C++ compilers for Ubuntu ?09:14
JackyAlcinegunndawg: compilers or IDEs?09:14
gunndawgI suppose IDE's09:14
yofel!ide09:14
ubot2Programming editors/suites: Terminal-based: vi/vim, emacs - KDE: Kate, KDevelop, Quanta+, Umbrello - GNOME: gvim, gedit, anjuta, pida, monodevelop, geany - Others: eclipse, netbeans, qtcreator09:14
JackyAlcineyofel's the man.09:15

yofelhm. codeblocks isn't on the list, but quite good09:15
gunndawglol, I have vim, I use it for shell scripting09:15

gunndawgI am not a know it all anymore :(09:59
gunndawgI am out of my realm!09:59
JackyAlcinegunndawg: I left Windows around early August last year. And I learned so much about computers ever since.10:00
JackyAlcinegunndawg: I can't go back, Windows is SO constricting.10:01
GneaJackyAlcine: you have stepped over from the darkside... ;)10:01
JackyAlcine:D and I'm embracing the light!10:02
gunndawgJackyAlcine I have used ubuntu for 3 - 4 days now and I have already preached that same thing to a buddy10:02
gunndawgi told him "you know, after using linux I feel like windows is so locked down, and primitive, and on top of that, you gotta PAY for litterly everything, even protection"10:03
gunndawgheck, they even want you to pay for winzip, just to extract .zip files! (of course I never paid ;)... )10:04
JackyAlcinegunndawg: There are some advantages that Windows has, but I think my time in Ubuntu will be the times when such features will be so easy to find.10:04
JackyAlcinegunndawg: Neither have I! I used 7zip :D10:04
gunndawgJackyAlcine , aside from gaming, what advantage does winblowz have over linux ?10:04
gunndawgI used winrar10:04
JackyAlcinegunndawg: Word processing (notice the lack of a grammar engine in LibreOffice/OpenOffice, there's one in AbiWord i think) is one.10:05
gunndawgJackyAlcine, I used OpenOffice even when I was on winblowz, lol10:06
kristian-aalborghi all10:06

gunndawgGnea, I was about to get into gaming here and installed wine and steam so I could do it10:07
gunndawgbut what games do you play that run good on linux ?10:07
JoeMaverickSettPyChess, GLTron, SuperTuxKart, Chromium BSU10:08
GneaI've found that steam really sucks - it's just another lock-in and some games don't work right10:08
JoeMaverickSettbattle for wesnoth and 0 A.D :)10:09
gunndawgGnea ah ok10:09
gunndawgcrap now I wanna install this netbeans because its not the right version, but im not sur how to, I didnt get it via package manager10:09
gunndawgso I dont know how to uninstall it, lol it isntalled via that shell script10:09
Gneagunndawg: frozen buggle, megaglest, battle for wesnoth, osmos, lincity, among others10:09
JoeMaverickSettGnea: osmos is really cool. :D10:09

MrMintanetThere is no "F" for fix option10:12
Gneagunndawg: run it like this:  ./file.sh --help10:12
Gneagunndawg: see if it has an uninstall function10:13
MrMintanetI , S, or M are the only options10:13
gunndawgGnea ok10:13
GneaMrMintanet: okay, there ought to be a way to make it so that you don't see any GUI during bootup, but all of the text from the kernel that tells you exactly what's going on10:13
MrMintanetIt's a black screen, then shows "Ubuntu 10.10" in very boring text...  four red and white dots below...10:14
gunndawgGnea, no uninstall script10:14
GneaMrMintanet: yeah, that's the bootup GUI10:14
MrMintanetThen it displays the error10:14
MrMintanetI know these drives are healthy.10:14
Gneagunndawg: meh.. that's why I don't like installing from .sh files10:14
gunndawgGnea, its usually frowned upon in windows, but can I just delete the netbeans folder ?10:15
Gneagunndawg: I try to go out of my way to find a .deb somewhere10:15
MrMintanetIf it's any help, I just set these drives up to "mountall" in the /etc/fstab10:15
Gneagunndawg: that might actually work10:15
MrMintanetWould that be the source of that problem?10:15
gunndawgok10:15
GneaMrMintanet: if they're not system drives, possibly10:15
MrMintanetThey are spare drives10:15
kristian-aalborgGnea: this is a desktop10:15
kristian-aalborg?10:15
gunndawgGnea, well its gone, but I still have the netbeans icon showing up in the applications > programming menu :(10:16
GneaMrMintanet: IOW, if they're not important to the basic running system, then they aren't critical and no, shouldn't be included in fstab10:16
Gneakristian-aalborg: what?10:16
marku379hi there10:16
MrMintanetI need these drives to mount on startup10:16
MrMintanetI am setting up a file server10:16
MrMintanetI want all of the drives to be mounted on boot10:17
kristian-aalborgI thought lm-sensors was for laptops only10:17
marku379im new to linux and looking for a player which can play .avi10:17
GneaMrMintanet: the system will find them and mount them for you, you don't need them in fstab10:17
JackyAlcinemarku379: Totem and VLC can.10:17
MrMintanetI will try again10:17
MrMintanetSheeeesh10:17

MrMintanet:(10:17
Gneakristian-aalborg: nope, it works on anything10:17
marku379thanking tyou JackyAlcine10:17
JackyAlcineno problem, marku37910:17
GneaMrMintanet: they ought to mount in /media/somewhere if not set in fstab, should work fine10:18
MrMintanetThis is the line I added to /etc/fstab  ->  dev/sdb1 /media/DATA ext4 defaults 0 110:18
gunndawgGnea, I removed the netbeans folder now the icon still shows up under the Applications > programming menu (with a ? as an icon)10:18
kristian-aalborgaha, I have it already.... "sensors" gives the same output as the command I showed before10:18
MrMintanetAnyone?10:18
GneaMrMintanet: yeah, I'd just remove that line and reboot, it should mount it on its own after all is said and done there10:18
Gneakristian-aalborg: okay10:19
JoeMaverickSettgunndawg: well, you could also delete that by right clicking the menu > Edit Menu > go to the appropriate category for it (probably Programming) > delete that.10:19
gunndawgJoeMaverickSett, Thank you. I know this is very basic and easy stuff but until I learn it, I wont know it, so I appologize for the easy fixes10:20
JoeMaverickSettgunndawg: nah, it's ok. that's what people in this room are here to do, to help each other. ;)10:20
MrMintanetWhen I boot up my system, i have two brand new drives (one hooked up externally via eSATA and the other connected internally SATA) both on the same controller.  The drives pass smart tests and all diagnostics, however... when I boot my system, my boot haults and says that there is a critical error with my system, I can "Ignore" "Skip" or "Manually Repair" the problem.  I have added "dev/sdb1 /media/DATA ext4 default10:20
MrMintanets 0 1" to the end of my /etc/fstab file so that these spare drives mount on startup.   Can anyone advise what I am doing wrong?10:20

bethdo97I am looking for an opinion -  I have just completed setting up a dual boot system with ubuntu 10.10 and Windows7 installed.  I had to install ubuntu 1st because my new hard drive and old laptop refused let me install Win 7 then ubuntu.  I have ubuntu 10.10 on the 1st HD partition; Windows 7 on the 2nd partition and a 3rd partition set up as a file share for both systems to use.22:41
zkriessebethdo97: Ok, well what's the actual question? :D22:43
bethdo97I have been trying to duplicate the instructions for fixing thhe grub2 start up so I can have a choice beetween the 2 OS's. Could i reinstall ubuntu using wubi so it would be easier for my son to switch between the two systems of is there an easier way to get an option menu to shhow up on boot22:45
bethdo97zkriesse: phone rang in middle of question22:45
seidosbethdo97: so you can't actually dual boot the system?  installing ubuntu first didn't solve the problem?22:46
aveilleuxseidos: Why would you install Ubuntu first? If you do that, Windows' bootloader wrecks GRUB.22:50
bethdo97No the windoows installation wiped out my MBR so now only Windows boots since that partition was made active during the install.  I need to get the other disc partition to be acctive too so that I can have an option which system to boot22:50
aveilleuxbethdo97: Do you have the option of starting over?22:50
bethdo97starting what over?22:51
aveilleuxbethdo97: The install process of both OSs. The standard way to install is Windows first, then Ubuntu, since Ubuntu will pick up the Windows installation and add it to the bootloader.22:51
bethdo97Can I just reinstall over the original installation and add Ubuntu to the previously created Ubuntu partition?22:53
gunndawgAnyone know why the sound works on my laptop speakers but when I plug my headphones in, the sound doesnt work in the headphones ?22:53
zkriesseOk, it's best to do this22:53
zkriesseInstall Windows (It's a pain in the ass I know but it's easier in the long run...) and then do Ubuntu via Wubi22:53
aveilleuxzkriesse: Noooooooooooooooooo....22:54
zkriesseIt's how I've heard22:54
zkriesseNot that it's best22:54
aveilleuxzkriesse: Wubi causes more problems than it'll solve22:54
zkriesseJust general word that's come to my ears has been that22:54
aveilleuxbethdo97: You can re-install Ubuntu over your current Ubuntu install, yes... if that's what you're asking22:57
bethdo97zkriesse: I have to agree with aveilleux about Wubi.  I want to put ubuntu onto my sysstem after I get done fixing my son's22:57
aveilleuxbethdo97: and theoretically that should solve your problem22:57
zkriessebethdo97: Hey, agree with aveilleux as He's usually right :D Better than I am for sure22:57
gunndawgcould someone help me get sound working from my headphones when I plug them into the headphones jack in my laptop22:58
bethdo97I tried Wubi on a commputer at work and it had more bugs than my german sheppard.22:58
bethdo97If I reinstall ubuntu over my current install then both Win 7 & Ubuntu will be accessable  in Grub2?23:00
bethdo97Will I have to do anything to setup a menu option on boot?23:01
holsteinbethdo97: i wouldnt expect better hardware support with a native install vs. a wubi install23:02
aveilleuxbethdo97: You shouldn't, no23:02
holsteinassuming thats what you mean by bugs23:02
seidosgunndawg: do you have another device to test the headphones on?23:03
gunndawgSeido, yeah they work fine on my windows system23:03
seidos!tab | gunndawg23:04
ubot2gunndawg: You can use your <tab> key for autocompletion of nicknames in IRC, as well as for completion of filenames and programs on the command line.23:04
seidosgunndawg: what version of ubuntu are you using?23:04
gunndawg32bit 10.1023:04
zkriessegunndawg: Does the system recognize your audio driver(s)?23:05
gunndawgzkriesse: I am assuming so if sound plays fine thru the laptop speakers23:05
zkriesseK just thought I'd ask23:05
zkriesseOne must consider all possibilities23:06
bethdo97holstein: it wasn't hardware issues that were the problems but rather we wanted to set it up for kids too be able to use 2 computers in my waiting room to play some educational games on but the wubi kept shutting down unexpectedly23:06
seidosgunndawg: this sounds like a bug to me.  perhaps you should create a bug in launchpad?  if you need it to work now, you can do two things, test with a different version of ubuntu, and mess with alsa23:06
* zkriesse glowers at alsa23:07
seidosgunndawg: another idea:  there may be something in the mixer that needs to be turned up for headphones to work23:07
gunndawgseidos: but when I plug the headphones in, the sound still plays thru the speakers, it like the headphones arent "enabled" or something23:07
seidosgunndawg: hmmm, yeah, not sure how built in speakers are "turned" off when headphones are plugged in23:09
gunndawgseidos: nore am I :(23:09
zkriesseWhat kind of laptop/pc is this?23:09
seidosgunndawg: but, you could check alsamixer (run it from a shell) to see what headphone vol. level is set to23:09
gunndawgseidos: I am partially deaf and without headphones I cannot clearly hear anything on the coputer :(23:09
gunndawgzkriesse: this is a toshiba satelliter C65523:10
zkriesseHmm23:10
seidosgunndawg: i need to do some neural processing.  my memory is presently failing me.23:10
bethdo97gunndawg: I had a similiar problem when I installed 10.10 initially.  Heaadphones weren't inserted when I installed ubuntu the 1st time.  built in speakers worked but not headphones. I plugged them in and reinstalled ubuntu 10.10 and voilla headphones and speakers both worked23:10
seidosgunndawg: i have a toshiba satelitte u305-s7448.  my condolences23:10
seidosbethdo97: +123:11
gunndawgseidos: I do not mind this laptop, its less than a month old and does everything I need it to23:11
bethdo97gunndawg: I have a Toshiba L67523:11
gunndawgbethdo97: so I have to completely reinstall ubuntu ? ugh23:11
seidosgunndawg: i am less than thrilled with my toshiba.  battery is essentially dead, fujitsu hard disk is limping from a single 1 meter drop23:11
bethdo97I  think it is in the drivers that come with the system and how ubuntu handdles them.23:12
seidosgunndawg: perhaps you could try rebooting with headphones plugged in?23:12
gunndawgseidos: might try that23:12
bethdo97gunndawg: I don't know if it will work on your system but I know it worked on my son's23:12
seidosgunndawg: i am trying to remember the command in a shell to get you your version of alsa23:12
gunndawglet me try a reboot and see what happends23:13
seidosi haven't been able to restore from backup, which has my shell command cache file :|23:13
seidosbecause of damaged fujitsu drive23:13
Xlight1357I am having trouble creating an ubuntu forum account. I get    Fatal error: Existing data passed is not an array Called set_existing in [path]/register.php on line 421 in [path]/includes/class_dm.php on line 235.  Can anyone tell me what im doing wrong? Thanks23:15
seidoscat /proc/asound/version23:15
gunndawgno luck on restart23:15
seidosgunndawg: cat /proc/asound/version to check what version of alsa you are running23:15
gunndawgseidos: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.23.23:16
seidosgunndawg: ah!  remove and reinstall alsa with head phones plugged in23:17
seidosgunndawg: i think the packages are alsabase and alsautils23:17
gunndawgbah, so I do have to reinstall ubuntu ?23:18
bethdo97gunndawg: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting and https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems and http://www.atoztoa.com/2010/01/install-alsa-latest-version-in-ubuntu.html were the places I reviewed to figure out what the isue was23:18
seidosgunndawg: i don't know, i am speculating that removing and reinstalling the *alsa packages* may fix the problem23:18
gunndawgseidos, can I remove it and reinstall it without having to reinstall the whole system ?23:19
seidosgunndawg: so you can try sudo apt-get remove alsa-utils && sudo apt-get remove alsa-base23:19
seidosgunndawg: yeah.  they are just packages.  dunno if it will work, but it's worth a try :)23:20
seidosthen with headphones plugged in, sudo apt-get install alsa-utils && sudo apt-get install alsa-base23:20
gunndawgok they are removed23:20
gunndawgok23:20
gunndawgtrying now23:20
seidosthen restart OR (more *fun*) try sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils restart and try to see if sound works23:21
gunndawgok they are reinstalled23:21
seidosif it doesn't you can restart OR (more *fun*) try pulseaudio -killall23:21
seidosand then alt-f2 pulseaudio and try again23:21
gunndawgseidos: should I just restart first before trying that ?23:22
seidosgunndawg: i would restart as a last resort23:22
gunndawgseidos: ok23:22
seidosgunndawg: i don't like to restart unless i have to23:22
gunndawgseidos: so sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils ?23:22
seidosgunndawg: "sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils restart"23:23
gunndawgseidos: command not found23:23
gunndawgsudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils restart23:24
seidosgunndawg: i guess restart then :|23:24
gunndawgok, brb23:24
gunndawgstill comin thru the speakers :(23:26
seidosdrat23:27
seidosgunndawg: when you installed the alsa packages did you have the headphones installed?23:27
gunndawgseidos: yes23:27
seidosgunndawg: you could try the same thing with the pulseaudio package23:28
gunndawgok23:28
holsteingunndawg: you tried pavucontrol ?23:29
gunndawgholstein: I dont think so23:29
holsteinworth a try23:29
gunndawgholstein: not sure what that is23:29
gunndawgseidos: so "sudo apt-get remove pulseaudio" ?23:30
holsteinseems to have more controls for pulse23:30
holsteinbut, if you're getting rid of pulse23:30
holsteindont sweat it23:30
gunndawgholstein: sounds like I am just gonna reinstall pulse23:30
holsteinid probably try the most current alsa23:30
holsteinthen do like you are23:30
holsteinjust tweak23:30
gunndawgholstein: alright how do I get the most updated alsa ?23:31
seidosisn't 1.0.23 the most recent alsa?  it is more recent than my version23:31
holsteini would even try some testing branch or whatever23:32
holsteinthe latest there is23:32
holsteingunndawg: what hardware?23:32
holsteinsome VIA chip ?23:32
gunndawgholstein: how can I find that ?23:33
holsteinyour hardware?23:33
gunndawgholstein: yes, I am not exactly sure what this laptop is running23:33
holsteinyou can run lspci23:33
holsteinalso23:33
holsteinaplay -l23:33
holsteinand arecord -l23:33
holsteinthis would all just gather info though23:34
gunndawgholstein: ok lspci is turning up a whole slew of info, not sure what part you want23:35
holsteingunndawg: you can dump the whole thing in pastebin23:35
holsteinhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/23:36
holsteinif thats easier23:36
gunndawgholstein:  ok23:36
gunndawgholstein: http://ubuntu.pastebin.com/LeMZnLHN23:37
gunndawgholstein:  looks like line #7 maybe ?23:37
holsteingunndawg: try checking http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=154956523:39
holsteinbefore tweaking too much else23:39
holstein#5 is the promising bit23:40
gunndawgholstein: ok23:40
gunndawghey that link worked! sound in my headphones!23:45
gunndawgjust adding that line to the alsa config file23:45
seidosawesome \o/23:46
seidosi'll have to read it23:46
gunndawgseidos: and I can unplug them and sound works in speakers, then plug them back in and it works in the headphones, perfect23:47
holsteingunndawg: :)23:48
seidosthanks holstein23:49
holsteinanytime23:49
