yax51so I think I found a way to update my BIOS to fix my keyboard problem, however I am worried about bricking my machine, I can't afford to do that....00:16

tseniorwhy does a linux root hdd that has been assigned to say /sda2  somehow just change to /sdc2 ?01:11
MattHarrisontsenior:  like after a reboot or while using the machine?01:12
gunndawgAnyone here got any experience using GTK-Gnutella ?01:13
tseniorafter a reboot, took me ages to figure out how do boot back into ubuntu just keep dropping back to shell01:13
MattHarrisontsenior:  I am not sure why, but I had the same problem before and I just switched my /etc/fstab to mount all drives by UUID01:14
MattHarrisontsenior: check out - http://linux.byexamples.com/archives/321/fstab-with-uuid/01:17
tseniorwill do  now thanks01:17
head_victimI can add a +1 to UUIDs01:17
head_victimI swapped around sata ports and drives and it all still wored01:17
head_victimworked*01:17
tseniori changed it to the drive assign because after update's it wouldnt boot from grub with uuid even though i could see in grub the uuid was correct01:20
dollziianybody know how to configure terminator to open with three split windows? One big on top and two smaller underneath?01:26

ddecatoralright guys, i have one for you. i switched to kubuntu a few weeks ago. firefox uses gtk, so i kde uses the qt-recursive theme to make it (and other gtk apps) match my desktop theme. however, this causes buttons on webpages to have the same background and text color so i can't read them at all. any idea what i need to change so the button background or text color is different? (i tried changing kde's color scheme, didn't help)04:21
ddecatorhey, i got it04:22
ddecatorjust had to tell it not to apply the colors to non-kde apps04:22
ddecatorand now the window decoration is bright blue...04:26
gunndawgddecator, sounds like we both have issues, lol04:28
ddecatorgunndawg: haha, yah04:28
gunndawgi cant seem to figure out my mic04:28
seidosmy issue right now is euler 8...and i don't feel like working on it04:29
gunndawgwhen I hit record on sound recorder it records stuff that comes thru my headphones04:29
gunndawgso it basically records exactly what I hear thru my headphones04:29
seidosalsa or pulseaudio?04:30
gunndawgpulseaudio04:30
seidosi would guess alsa...but that is like flipping a coin, practically04:30
gunndawgits the only option I have04:30
seidoswell, i think the audio is routed at some point to alsa04:30
gunndawghmm04:31
seidosso it could be either one...i'm not really sure what the point of pulseaudio is, though.04:31
ddecatorfixed :D04:31
seidosi think it's a "sound server"04:31
gunndawgseidos, so what does that mean? not fixable ?04:31
seidosgunndawg: it means i have no idea, and so i am thinking about it04:31
seidosgunndawg: it's all fixable, with enough knowledge.  the source is open.  let's check launchpad, if there isn't a bug, let's create one.04:32
gunndawgseidos, thanks :) give me 5mins real quick and I will return04:34
* jmarsden wonders if "5mins real quick" means about 2 minutes? :)04:34
JackyAlcinejmarsden: usually is about 7, 8 mins. :p04:37
jmarsden:) OK, so "5mins real slow" must be about 30 minutes ... someone should write a script to do the conversions :)04:38
seidosJackyAlcine: that's a real slow 5 min04:38
* jmarsden thinks about adding minsrealslow and minsrealquick to the database used by the units program :)04:40
gunndawgseidos, back04:46
seidosgunndawg: ack04:47
seidosgunndawg: i am searching https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu04:47
gunndawgseidos, yeah I gave a look around there04:48
seidosgunndawg: if you think the problem is with pulseaudio, create a new bug with alt-f2 -> ubuntu-bug pulseaudio -> enter04:49
seidosgunndawg: then follow the instructions, and then follow the bug.04:49
gunndawgseidos, well I dont know if its with pulse audio or not, I dont even know what pulse audio is, lol04:49
seidosgunndawg: if it's not the right package, someone will triage it elsewhere04:50
gunndawgseidos, I just know that I had to modify the alsa-base.conf file to get my headphones to work, so I figure it might be the same issue considering its the same card04:50
gunndawgI dont see anywhere that gives me a choice to use alsa, or pulseaudio for my input device,04:51
seidosgunndawg: the system uses pulseaudio and alsa.  i have heard it is possible to just use alsa, but i'm not sure that this will fix your problem.04:51
gunndawgseidos, oh ok04:52
gunndawgseidos, its just strange that with any recording device it only records whats being heard thru my output device04:52
gunndawgso its like recording the output04:52
seidosgunndawg: i agree.  it sounds like it's a problem with the driver (i.e. alsa).04:53
gunndawgseidos, oh alright04:53
seidosgunndawg: but, i don't even know how to download the sourcecode for the driver for your conexant chip04:55
seidosit would be interesting to look at it, at least04:55
gunndawgseidos, http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1069048.html04:57
jmarsdenseidos: If you know which package the driver is in, apt-get source PACKAGE will download it for you... what chip are you trying to find a driver for?04:57
gunndawgseidos,  the 2nd post in that link the guy talks about changing your recording from Front, Front Mic, Front Mic Capture, etc04:58
gunndawgseidos, but I see no where to do that, seems like it COULD fix the problem04:58
seidosjmarsden: conexant CX2058504:58
seidosgunndawg: you don't have front, front mic, front mic capture in your mixer04:58
gunndawgseidos, no I didnt, I just thought maybe I had to manually change the input to my mic jack or something, sounded promising :(04:58
seidosgunndawg: you had 3 or 4 last we checked.  you sent me a screenshot.  capture, and i think 2 others.04:59
seidosgunndawg: one thing you could try (after creating the bug, this is important, so that a developer can see the problem), is to upgrade to newest alsa in the dev ppa04:59
gunndawgseidos, ok04:59
seidosgunndawg: thing is, i'm not sure how to roll things back if something else gets messed up, but this is probably unlikely.05:00
gunndawgseidos, if you could, just read that guys post, the 2nd one in that link I gave you, he talks about some stuff relating to HDA intel, etc05:00
seidosi suppose remove the ppa, and maybe do sudo apt-get update05:00
gunndawgseidos, just not sure how to understand it fully05:00
seidosgunndawg: should i read it?05:00
seidosi'll skim it05:01
gunndawgseidos, well, its up to you really, heh. Just figured it might better help me fix this issue if someone else can read it and make better sense of it than myself05:01
seidosgunndawg: OP is using intrepid05:01
seidosyeah, skimmed, we already did that gunndawg.  we got you from recording nothing, to static, to now headphone output05:02
seidos!alsa05:02
ubot2If you're having problems with sound, click the Volume applet, then Sound Preferences, and check your Volume, Hardware, Input, and Output settings.  If that fails, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Sound - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting - http://alsa.opensrc.org/DmixPlugin - For playing audio files,  see !players and !mp3.05:02
gunndawgseidos, I skimmed those links earlier with nothing related to microphone input05:03
jmarsdenLooks like that chip is handled by snd-hda-intel, and there are some bugs related to that in Launchpad... have you tried grabbing the latest alsa stuff using the approach at  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules  ?05:03
gunndawgjmarsden, no I havent grabbed the most recent, lemme try05:03
jmarsdenThis sounds a lot like bug #701271 to me05:04
ubot2Launchpad bug 701271 in linux "[Conexant CX20585] Recording problem with internal mic" [Undecided,In progress] https://launchpad.net/bugs/70127105:04
seidosjmarsden: haha, i was just going to copy paste that link05:04
jmarsdenseidos: I'm lazy and let the bot post the link for me :)05:04
seidosjmarsden: gunndawg: if i recall correctly, we looked at that bug, 701271, and resolved that it wasn't a problem with the "internal mic".05:05
seidosjmarsden: the wiki?05:05
gunndawgseidos, yeah that fix corrected the headphones jack05:05
jmarsdenOh, no, I thought you meant the link to the bug... IRC delay causing confusion.05:06
seidosyeah, 22:51 yesterday i believe, according to the logs.05:06
gunndawgok I set up and installed the PPA for alsa05:07
gunndawgI suppose it needs a reboot then05:07
gunndawgi'll brb05:08
jmarsdengunndawg: Just to see the PPA... no it doesn't ... too late :)05:08
gunndawgback05:10
jmarsdenOK... did you install the new package from the PPA before rebooting?  if so.. did it make any difference?05:11
gunndawgjmarsden, yeah I installed it and sound recorder still does not record my void05:12
gunndawgvoice*05:12
jmarsdengunndawg: OK... I'm not an audio expert, but I can try... can you pastebin the output of    amixer    for me please?05:13
gunndawgjmarsden, sure, do you know exactly what its doing though? If I have an mp3 playing or something and then hit RECORD on sound recorder then all it records is the song i am listening to05:14
gunndawgso when I play the recording back, I can hear the song playing05:14
jmarsdenWell, it sounds like it is not recording from the mic input but from another input... so I want to see what amixer says its settings are...05:15
gunndawghttp://www.ubuntu.pastebin.com/stLgaYT505:15
jmarsdenOk, the 'Capture' setting is what is recording whatever you output, I think.  It is not showing you a normal mic input at all, only the analog mic boost, which seems odd.05:17
gunndawgyeah, says analog05:18
gunndawgjmarsden, in the sound mixer under Input I cant change anything05:20
gunndawgcant change input volume, or where it says "Choose a device for sound input" its empty05:20
gunndawgjmarsden, I take that back, only one device is listed05:21
gunndawgbut I still cant change input volume or anything, options are grayed out05:21
gunndawgjmarsden, the device listed under input in sound mixer is "Internal Audio Analog Stereo"05:21
jmarsdenI think you need more of a Linux sound expert than I am... it looks to me as though the driver is not telling the higher levels of the sound code that the mic input exists, so the mixer doesn't display it... but that's mostly a guess.05:22
jmarsdenDo you have a line in jack ?  and DO you have something that generates line level audio you could plug into it?05:22
gunndawgwhat do you mean line in jack ?05:23
gunndawgI plug my headset into the GREEN jack, and then the mic into the PINK jack05:23
gunndawgif thats what you mean05:23
jmarsdenMight be interesting to see whether that gets recorded or not.  A jack ( a connector on the sound card or motherboard) labelled line in, often blue on PC cards.05:23
jmarsdenIs there a blue jack?05:23
gunndawgjmarsden, no blue jack05:23
jmarsdenOK, never mind that idea then :)05:24
gunndawgheh05:25
jmarsdenI think you should probably file a bug report and see if the experts pick up on it in Launchpad, at this point.05:25
gunndawghttps://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/43452005:26
ubot2Launchpad bug 434520 in pulseaudio "Pulseaudio refuses to use internal microphone input (Lenovo X300)" [Undecided,Confirmed]05:26
gunndawgthat looks like its already been done05:26
jmarsdenOK... that is your exact make and model of machine?05:27
gunndawgno05:27
gunndawgnot exact05:27
gunndawgbut it uses HDA Intel and its a pulseaudio problem05:28
gunndawgwith all the same symptoms05:28
jmarsdenHDA Intel is ... not exactly one chip :)05:29
gunndawgjmarsden, try running gstream-properties05:29
jmarsdenI'd file a new bug with all the detailed info from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems in it, and let the experts decide if it is really a duplicate of bug #43452005:29
ubot2Launchpad bug 434520 in pulseaudio "Pulseaudio refuses to use internal microphone input (Lenovo X300)" [Undecided,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/43452005:29
gunndawgwonder if this is what I need to change, looks kinda promising05:29
jmarsdengstream-properties ?  I can't find such a program or package name here.05:30
gunndawgstrange05:31
gunndawgit opened up the multimedia systems selector05:31
jmarsdenAh, gstreamer-properties .  The "er" matters.05:31
gunndawgoops, sorry05:31
jmarsdenOK, and does it show you the mic input as a possible one you can select?05:32
gunndawgjmarsden, I can change the plugin and device05:32
gunndawgor the pipeline if I choose custom under plugin05:32
jmarsdenTo what?05:32
gunndawgALSA, Pulse, OSS - open sound system, OSS - opens ound system v4, and Custom05:33
jmarsdenI wouldn't change that!  Can you change the device to mic or microphone or anything similar to that?05:33
jmarsdenThe input device, that is.05:34
gunndawgno05:34
gunndawgunder ALSA I can change device to CONEXANT Analog05:35
gunndawgand when I do a test it just makes a humming noice05:35
gunndawgnoise*05:35
jmarsdenYes... if your system is all set up for Pulseaudio and you switch systems, there is (as far as I know) a lot more to do than just changing one item in a dialog box :)05:35
jmarsdenIt was set to Pulseaudio when you first ran the gstreamer-properties application, right?05:36
gunndawgyeah05:36
jmarsdenThen... that's how it should stay, unless you really know enough to set up alsa and then switch to it... and I don't.05:37
gunndawgalright05:38
gunndawgbrb gonna reboot05:39
jmarsdenOK.05:39
gunndawgback05:42
jmarsdenOK.  I think I'll stick my earlier statement "I'd file a new bug with all the detailed info from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems in it, and let the experts decide if it is really a duplicate of bug #434520"05:42
ubot2Launchpad bug 434520 in pulseaudio "Pulseaudio refuses to use internal microphone input (Lenovo X300)" [Undecided,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/43452005:42
gunndawgok05:43
gunndawgtrying another fix, gonna reboot again05:45
gunndawghmmm, well I did something05:52
gunndawgI added a line to the pulse default.pa file05:53
gunndawgand now I have another option showing up under the INPUT tab when you open up the mixer05:53
gunndawg_well, I am all out of ideas, heh06:09

Daniel0108hi20:43
danberhey all20:48
danberdo I really have to open a terminal and run complicated commands to install a regular printer driver?20:49
danberI've read many places that ubuntu is supposed to be so easy and it's "windows you need brains for"20:50
danberbut I'm not so sure about that20:50
danberbeen running ubuntu for about a week now20:51
holsteindanber: you dont have to20:51
holsteinyou can get a printer from a manufacturer that supports linux20:52
danbernorsk?20:52
danbernorwegian?20:52
holsteindanber: what is the device?20:52
danberjust a sec, I'll show you the link20:53
danberhttp://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/instruction_scn1a.html20:55
holsteindanber: what printer do you have?20:55
danberyou think this sort of stuff only goes for this particular manufacturer?20:56
holsteindepends20:56
danberbrother dcp-7010L20:56
holsteinbrother is decent20:56
holsteini have 120:56
holsteinand access to 3 others20:56
holsteinthat are plug n play20:56
holsteini would check out http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=141643020:57
holsteinand http://cholito.org/2008/03/11/brother-dcp-7010l-and-linux20:57
danberok thanks20:59
holsteini guess to answer your question20:59
holsteinyes20:59
holsteinyou might have to open a terminal and run complicated commands to install a regular printer driver20:59
holsteinBUT, this is not a 'regular printer driver'21:00
holsteinthis is a printer/scanner driver21:00
holsteinand not a common one21:00
danberyes, to be precise, my device does print by plug and play, but I'm short of some functionality like scanning for instance21:01
holsteinnetworked scanning?21:02
holsteindanber: can you hook it up USB ?21:02
holsteinif you can21:02
danberno not network, it's hooked by usb21:02
holsteingo to 'applications - graphics - simple scan'21:02
holsteinand see if it just finds the scanner21:03
holsteinit = that simple scan app21:03
danberno it can't find it21:03
holsteindoesnt have to21:03
holsteintoo bad21:03
danbertried xsane too21:04
holsteinive only used a handful of scanners with buntu21:04
holsteinand they've so far all just worked21:04
danberguess I'm just out of luck then....:)21:04
holsteinnah21:05
holsteinhttp://cholito.org/2008/03/11/brother-dcp-7010l-and-linux21:05
holsteindoesnt look too hard21:05
holsteinmight need to tweak the process a bit21:05
holsteinto work with 10.0421:05
holsteinor 10.1021:05
danberright. seems there's a site for everything :)21:06
holsteinthats what i like about linux and buntu21:06
holsteinlots of support around21:07
danberobviously21:07
danbermy other bad experience was first time I booted, I was prompted to install an ATI proprietary driver, and this (I think) led to me being unable to boot. it just went into shell or whatever it's called, and I hadn't the faintest idea what to do so i reinstalled21:10
holsteinsure21:11
holsteindanber: thats normal21:11
danberI mean first time I was in21:11
holsteinyou dont *have to install that driver21:11
holsteinsometimes, i dont21:11
holsteindepends on the machine21:11
holsteinthere are several reasons why that would cause an issue for you21:12
holsteinthe trick is21:12
holsteincome in here *before* you do that :)21:12
holsteinand ask21:12
danberhehe21:12
holsteinand get the scoop on what can and might break21:12
holsteinand how to have a nice backup plan21:12
holsteinin case something does break21:12
holsteinhttps://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xsane/+bug/57862021:12
ubot2Launchpad bug 578620 in xsane "Failed to open device `brother3:bus1;dev1': Invalid argument" [Undecided,New]21:12
holstein^^ looks like you could add yourself to that relevant bug maybe21:13
ddecatorxsane?21:14
ddecatorhaven't used that in a long time21:15
holsteini assumed simplescan was just a front-end for it21:15
ddecatornot sure..21:15
holsteinbut, i should know better, and assume nothing :)21:15
danberI'm not following you21:15
holsteindanber: you're not following me?21:16
holsteinabout the bug?21:16
danberwell right, that's not the error message. It's more like "can't find any devices"21:16
holsteinOK21:16
holsteinstill, you might want to try and find a bug21:16
danbersure21:17
holsteinand add yourself to it21:17
ddecatorlooks like simple scan was written as a replacement for xsane, not a front-end21:17
holsteinddecator: cool21:17
holsteini like it :)21:17
ddecatoryah, it's a LOT nicer21:17
holsteineh21:17
holsteinxsane just looked old21:17
danberactually I have a third issue21:19
holsteinhehe21:19
holsteingo for it danber21:20
danber:)21:20
danberI'm very sure about having downloaded 64 bit ubuntu21:20
holsteinalso21:20
holsteinhttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI21:20
holsteinsomething to read about the ATI driver issue21:21
holsteinyou can check that out before trying again21:21
danberbut now every time I try to install something I get "wrong architecture"21:21
danberalright21:21
ddecatordanber: install what? something from a .deb?21:21
danberso it only accepts i38621:21
holsteindanber: theres no practical reason to run 64bit21:21
holsteinid say21:21
danberanything21:22
danberlike google chrome21:22
ddecatorfrom the repos?21:22
danberheard about this?21:22
holsteinyeah, thats a good point21:22
holsteinanything in the repos *should install21:22
danberwhats repos?21:22
ddecatorhow are you trying to install apps?21:22
danberfrom ubuntu softwarecenter and differents websites. on websites, obviously you often need to choose  from 32bit or 64 bit...21:25
holsteindanber: where do you get this warning?21:25
holsteinnot from software center right?21:25
ddecatorand even from the software center it gives an error?21:25
danberno, no error from the softwarecenter21:25
holsteinok21:25
holsteinthat is to be expected21:26
holsteinnext time you re-install21:26
holsteinjust do 32bit21:26
holsteinunless you need 64 for some reason21:26
holsteini have several 64bit installs21:26
danberi get the error when I've downloaded, say, chrome 64 bit, an pushed the "install" button21:26
holsteinmostly for testing21:26
holsteinand my audio production box is 64bit21:26
holsteinother than that, 32bit is what i have21:26
ddecatorthere isn't really a disadvantage to 64bit. i use it without issue21:27
ddecatordanber: what does it say when you run the command "uname -m" in a terminal?21:27
holsteindanber: i would double check that you have the 64bit .deb downloaded21:27
danberhow do I check?21:27
holsteingo back to the site21:27
holsteinand look21:27
holsteinif i wanted chrome21:28
holsteini would install chromium21:28
holsteinfrom the repo21:28
ddecatora lot of the time the file name will say 64 somewhere in there21:28
holsteinsudo apt-get install chromium-browser21:28
holsteinOR search in the software center21:28
ddecatorbut lets make absolutely sure it's 64-bit by running that command i gave :)21:28
danberwhat is repo?21:28
holsteinyeah, run uname -m like ddecator suggests21:29
ddecatordanber: repo is short for "repository." it's where software packages are stored. the official repository hosts packages tested and maintained by ubuntu developers. it's the most reliable source for getting software. the software center uses the official repository21:29
danberright ok21:30
danberi68621:31
danberis what it says21:31
ddecatorthat's 32-bit :)21:31
holsteinhehe21:31
danberdamn21:31
holstein"theres your problem"21:31
danberI was dead sure21:31
holsteini wouldnt sweat it21:31
ddecatorit's usually the things we're sure about that end up being the problem :p21:31
holsteini have a couple 32bit only apps21:31
holsteinthat i miss21:32
danberhehe true21:32
holsteinand theres not really an easy way to deal with that21:32
danberI thought I needed 64 bit to get full use of 6GB RAM.....21:32
holsteinnot necessarily21:33
holsteintheres a pae kernel21:33
holsteinif your motherboard supports that21:33
holsteinand it probably does21:33
holsteindanber: in the terminal21:33
holsteinrun the command21:33
holsteinfree21:33
danberin systemmonitor it says 5.4 GiB21:34
holsteini think that would report 421:34
holsteinif you were unable to access the full 621:34
holstein5.4 seems right to me21:35
danberfree tells me 5671520 of ram21:35
holsteinyou can do free -m21:35
holsteinif you prefer MB's21:36
danberwhat if it was eight or ten would it make a difference?21:36
holsteindanber: im not positive21:36
holsteinbut i thought it was 4 GB's21:36
danberI do :)21:36
holsteinthe limit21:36
holsteinSO, i would say it shouldnt make a difference21:36
holsteinin the terminal21:37
holsteinrun21:37
holsteinuname -a21:37
danberLinux dan-GA-880GA-UD3H 2.6.35-25-generic-pae #44-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jan 21 19:01:46 UTC 2011 i686 GNU/Linux21:37
holsteinyou see something like 2.6.32-28-pae21:37
holsteinyeah21:37
holsteinthe pae is what is allowing you access then21:37
holsteinand, AFAIK21:38
danbermhm?21:38
holsteinit would allow you to access more21:38
holstein8 or 10 or whatever21:38
danberI see21:38
yofelit would be ~3.6 I think if it couldn't access it, so holstein is right21:38
danberthis differs a bit from windows doesn't it?21:39
holsteinhttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/EnablingPAE21:39
holsteindanber: im not sure how windows deals with it21:39
holsteini dont know if 32bit xp has the same issue21:39
holsteinor, if it does, if there is a work-around21:40
yofelxp certainly has, I tried xp 32-bit with 6GiB once, ended up with 421:40
holsteinhmmm21:40
holsteinmaybe theres a program21:40
holsteinor something equivalent to the pae kernel21:40
yofelevery other windows I had there was 64-bit so I can't say anything about the newer versions21:41
danberwhat exactly is pae then?21:41
holsteinyeah, i dont have a way to test that either21:41
holsteindanber: check that wiki page21:41
holsteinhttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/EnablingPAE21:41
danberwell then I'm out of issues21:44
danberthanks for the help21:44
holsteindanber: anytime :)21:45
