kofteQuestion: I saw on the Ubuntu forum that "since Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx), Skype is part of the Canonical partner repository".  I just installed Xubuntu 10.04.  Would that repository work, or is it only for standard Ubuntu?05:25
matty75i don't have an answer for you on that one... i usually go to skype.com and dl it... the package should be a .deb which should work in xubuntu05:28
kofteI prefer using a repository for updates05:29
matty75the ubuntu reps should work... but i'm not 100%05:31
matty75sure05:31
kofteactually, there's a Skype repository that is already working, but it's unsigned.  If possible, I'd use the Canonical repositories, but it's not a big deal at the moment.  To some extent, it's an academic question: whether repositories work across different Ubuntu distributions05:32

Sysi!xubuntu09:11
ubottuXubuntu is Ubuntu with Xfce instead of !GNOME. More info at http://www.xubuntu.org and http://wiki.ubuntu.com/Xubuntu/ - To install from Ubuntu: « sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop » - Join #xubuntu for support - See also: !Ubuntu and !Xubuntu-Channels09:11
xubuntu178tosh sat 17.3" is a resource hog...lol09:12
Sysiyou propably can't get very long battery life09:12
Sysikeep screen dim09:12
xubuntu178ino...got it as a repalcement desktop, but i need for a trip next week & win 7 is a real drain09:13
xubuntu178so im tryin every distro, prefer deb apt get over rpm09:14
Sysilubuntu may feel limited expecially if you're used to gnome, but as well it can have everything you need09:14
Sysisurprisingly xfce is my favourite, although i'm currently on kde netbook-plasma09:15
Sysiuses significantly more battery than xfce09:15
xubuntu178ino i had kubuntu on drained batt in less than 2 hrs09:16
xubuntu178pclinuxos is the worse09:16
xubuntu178maybe ill try ubuntu netbook09:17
Sysii think beetween xubuntu and lubuntu it's more about what programs you're using09:18
xubuntu178anyways thnx Sysi09:18
xubuntu178i've used mint xfce, lxde, cb open box & antiX in the past09:20
Sysiarchlinux for really minimal09:21
xubuntu178thats when i had a old dell dimension 240009:22
Sysii've tried fedora, arch, suse, debian and ubuntu, with kde, gnome, xfce, and lxde and seems i always go back to xubuntu09:22
ysisHi, I'm on Xubuntu 10.10 and have a floppy related issue: I have a line "/dev/fd0 /media/floppy vfat utf8,nosuid,user,noauto 0 0" in my /etc/fstab and the floppy is nicely mounted when I click on the desktop icon and the permissions of /media/floppy change to that of the mounting user. Now I also have a floppy disk entry in Thunar's sidebar and the Places menu in the panel. But the desktop icon and the other two options seems to be unrelated 10:11
Sysicutted after 'unrelated'10:14
ysisSysi: I got help in #xfce. Thanks nevertheless.10:29
Sysii'm there too10:30

Lord_RahlI install xubuntu 10.04 i was surprised how gnome stiff it install metacity, nautilus, and few other things.14:16
Lord_RahlI ripe them out and found on problem. just can of found it weird..14:17
Lord_Rahlguess everyone is sleeping :)14:18
TheSheepit doesn't install nautilus...14:38
Lord_RahlTheSheep, It did for for me. I install just the server then I install xubuntu-desktop. Trick from Fab (Linux outlaws)15:02
Lord_Rahlthat way you do not wast more time down loading updates15:03
Lord_RahlI think it may pull it down for the menu editor shared lib anyway I ripe it out15:04
charlie-tcaIf you install any other version first, that will install things that Xubuntu will not install. Xubuntu did not install Nautilus, Ubuntu did when you installed it.15:06
Lord_Rahlnope just  install the server and then apt-get install xubuntu-desktop15:08
charlie-tcaand server is Ubuntu, not Xubuntu15:08
Lord_Rahlno big deal. I that it was odd maybe it some package I install or some thing. i dont know15:09
charlie-tcaXubuntu does not install nautilus. If you follow an installation that is not recommended to install it, you expect strange things to happen15:10
Lord_Rahlno big deal It all straighten out.15:11
Lord_RahlHave you trade the alpha yet? What you think15:11
Lord_Rahltried*15:12
charlie-tcayes, I have. I think it will be a good release in April15:12
Lord_Rahlif it anything like the 4.6 ppa It will good15:14
Lord_RahlI think XFCE will gain a few user because of Unity15:14
charlie-tcatime will tell. Unity is a very nice desktop environment15:18
craigbass1976I've got a neighbor on a pretty slow connection.  The openjdk update is stalling and dying.  Can I jsut grab a package off of my already updated computer and run over with a thumb drive to do the update that way?18:30
craigbass1976My next question is...  Is this package screwy anyway?  As I was typing my last question, I got my own error that I "Failed to Open Package Files" and I'm trying to install that same package on this fresh xubuntu install18:32
craigbass1976Lord_Rahl, Is that a Terry Goodkind nick you have?18:32
Lord_RahlThanks love the books18:40
Lord_Rahlthat and I could not think of anything lol18:40
craigbass1976I haven't read anything for a while, maybe the pillars one.  Didn't he come out with something very "un" fantasy?18:42
Lord_Rahlhes last book the laws of nine - that was still base on the same universe -18:44
Lord_Rahlwikipedia said he coming out a new book soon18:47
craigbass1976He was getting a bit political; the one where he's a slave and carves a statue.18:48
Lord_Rahltrue.. good story if you disregard all that.18:49
Lord_RahlI dont like the tv series at all it all messed up18:50
morrowindHi, I'm trying to install xubuntu 10.04 on an old 1.4GHz, 256MBs RAM laptop and it isn't working19:19
morrowindI select to run Live CD and it shows the Xubuntu logo and then the screen goes blank and nothing happens19:20
morrowindis there anything else I can try? I really don't wanna have to go back to XP on it19:21
charlie-tcaIt will take it a while to run, with the limited ram. You can also try the alternate image19:21
morrowindwhat's the alternate image?19:21
charlie-tcaI wait as much as 5 minutes to get screens on my old pc19:21
charlie-tcawhich versionof Xubuntu?19:21
morrowindI was trying to run 10.04LTS19:21
charlie-tcaalternate image is available here - http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/10.04/release/19:22
morrowindand it's been like 10 minutes and the screen is still blank19:22
charlie-tcaIt installs without using the gui installer, which can be faster19:22
morrowindI see19:23
morrowindso the install is text based?19:23
charlie-tcadoes the live desktop come up on the pc?19:23
charlie-tcayes, the alternate cd uses a text-based installer19:23
morrowindlike I said, it's been 10 minutes and the screen is still blank. So how do I know that it will run once I get it installed?19:23
morrowindcould it be a video driver problem19:24
morrowindI've gotten 9.04 to boot to desktop no problems19:24
morrowindbut there isn't any support for 9.04 anymore19:24
charlie-tcaHave you been able to get the 10.04 to boot to the desktop ?19:24
morrowindno, it's still on a blank screen19:24
charlie-tcaI would nót install it then19:25
charlie-tcatry 10.10 instead19:25
morrowinddoes 10.10 have better driver support?19:25
charlie-tcaIf you can not get a desktop with the cd, you probably won't get one after installing19:25
Sysiwhat graphics card, old intel?19:27
morrowindyea19:28
morrowindyea definitely intel19:29
morrowindit's an old celeron m processor19:29
morrowindnot sure if that makes much of a difference19:29
Sysitry nomodeset as boot option19:29
Sysior acpi=off19:29
Sysi10.10 might work better, newer drivers19:30
Sysii've also heard it's better on low-memory system19:30
morrowindno acpi disables power modes, what does "nomodeset" do?19:30
Sysiacpi handles more than that afaik, nomodeset is one ption for graphics driver19:31
Sysiyou can google for KMS19:32
morrowindokay I'll try those boot options and if that doesn't work then I will try 10.10. Thank you19:32
