[00:35] I have the problem that my display ist too small for some windows, @ gnome it was possible to move them with alt+left mouse over the top from the display but with xubuntu it dont work [00:36] I can move mine with Alt+left mouse [00:37] <_Techie_> man its good to be back [00:37] You might have something set in Applications -> Settings -> Settings Manger -> Window manager tweaks that is stopping it? [00:38] Check the Accessibility tab to make sure it Alt is the right key, too === _Techie_ is now known as _TechAway_ [00:39] ok i search [00:39] !away > _TechAway_ [00:39] _TechAway_, please see my private message [00:42] charlie: i have installed the german version i dont find what you mean [00:44] ok i have it, thx [00:47] You are welcome [00:47] it is much harder when you have to try and translate the menus, isn't it? [00:52] Suggestion: make the menu editable. [00:58] already done. Xfce 4.8 has editable menus using alacarte or any other menu editor [00:59] They will be available in natty [01:20] Sweet [01:21] Can't wait for the new version :) [01:21] When will it be released? [03:07] hi all .. i was wondering if someone out there could help me out? [03:08] i need some help with samba and sharing files between my Windows 7 pc and my Xubuntu laptop [03:08] any takers wanna help [03:08] ? [03:43] !staff [03:43] hey Christel, Dave2, Gary, KB1JWQ, Levia, Martinp23, SportsChick, VorTechS, jayne, jenda, marienz, nalioth, niko, nhandler, rob, stew or tomaw, I could use a bit of your time :) [03:43] !ops [03:43] ops is HELP! gnomefreak, tonyyarusso, PuMpErNiCkLe, maxamillion, TheSheep, crimsun, mrpouit, Myrtti, PriceChild charlie-tca or cody-somerville [04:08] hello every one [04:21] xubun; hello [05:23] well... i have nvidia drivers, broadcom and a correct screen resolution! it's been a successful day [05:23] but... no sound [05:23] and... my desktop icons are gone... [05:23] hi [05:23] hi kofte [05:24] hi matty75 [05:25] Question: I saw on the Ubuntu forum that "since Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx), Skype is part of the Canonical partner repository". I just installed Xubuntu 10.04. Would that repository work, or is it only for standard Ubuntu? [05:28] i don't have an answer for you on that one... i usually go to skype.com and dl it... the package should be a .deb which should work in xubuntu [05:29] I prefer using a repository for updates [05:31] the ubuntu reps should work... but i'm not 100% [05:31] sure [05:32] actually, there's a Skype repository that is already working, but it's unsigned. If possible, I'd use the Canonical repositories, but it's not a big deal at the moment. To some extent, it's an academic question: whether repositories work across different Ubuntu distributions [05:50] later === _TechAway_ is now known as _Techie_ [09:08] im thinking about dl xubuntu...any good [09:10] i have ubuntu but drain my laptop battery pretty quick, so debating b/t xubuntu or lubuntu [09:10] take off desktop effects [09:11] i did [09:11] you can easily try different desktops without reinstall you know [09:11] !xubuntu [09:11] Xubuntu is Ubuntu with Xfce instead of !GNOME. More info at http://www.xubuntu.org and http://wiki.ubuntu.com/Xubuntu/ - To install from Ubuntu: « sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop » - Join #xubuntu for support - See also: !Ubuntu and !Xubuntu-Channels [09:12] tosh sat 17.3" is a resource hog...lol [09:12] you propably can't get very long battery life [09:12] keep screen dim [09:13] ino...got it as a repalcement desktop, but i need for a trip next week & win 7 is a real drain [09:14] so im tryin every distro, prefer deb apt get over rpm [09:14] lubuntu may feel limited expecially if you're used to gnome, but as well it can have everything you need [09:15] surprisingly xfce is my favourite, although i'm currently on kde netbook-plasma [09:15] uses significantly more battery than xfce [09:16] ino i had kubuntu on drained batt in less than 2 hrs [09:16] pclinuxos is the worse [09:17] maybe ill try ubuntu netbook [09:18] i think beetween xubuntu and lubuntu it's more about what programs you're using [09:18] anyways thnx Sysi [09:20] i've used mint xfce, lxde, cb open box & antiX in the past [09:21] archlinux for really minimal [09:22] thats when i had a old dell dimension 2400 [09:22] i've tried fedora, arch, suse, debian and ubuntu, with kde, gnome, xfce, and lxde and seems i always go back to xubuntu [10:11] Hi, I'm on Xubuntu 10.10 and have a floppy related issue: I have a line "/dev/fd0 /media/floppy vfat utf8,nosuid,user,noauto 0 0" in my /etc/fstab and the floppy is nicely mounted when I click on the desktop icon and the permissions of /media/floppy change to that of the mounting user. Now I also have a floppy disk entry in Thunar's sidebar and the Places menu in the panel. But the desktop icon and the other two options seems to be unrelated [10:14] cutted after 'unrelated' [10:29] Sysi: I got help in #xfce. Thanks nevertheless. [10:30] i'm there too [10:31] Roger. :o) === _Techie_ is now known as _TechAway_ [13:17] inserting dvd won't do anything after changed the "autoplay dvd" command to vlc [13:17] ideas? [14:16] I install xubuntu 10.04 i was surprised how gnome stiff it install metacity, nautilus, and few other things. [14:17] I ripe them out and found on problem. just can of found it weird.. [14:18] guess everyone is sleeping :) [14:38] it doesn't install nautilus... [15:02] TheSheep, It did for for me. I install just the server then I install xubuntu-desktop. Trick from Fab (Linux outlaws) [15:03] that way you do not wast more time down loading updates [15:04] I think it may pull it down for the menu editor shared lib anyway I ripe it out [15:06] If you install any other version first, that will install things that Xubuntu will not install. Xubuntu did not install Nautilus, Ubuntu did when you installed it. [15:08] nope just install the server and then apt-get install xubuntu-desktop [15:08] and server is Ubuntu, not Xubuntu [15:09] no big deal. I that it was odd maybe it some package I install or some thing. i dont know [15:10] Xubuntu does not install nautilus. If you follow an installation that is not recommended to install it, you expect strange things to happen [15:11] no big deal It all straighten out. [15:11] Have you trade the alpha yet? What you think [15:12] tried* [15:12] yes, I have. I think it will be a good release in April [15:14] if it anything like the 4.6 ppa It will good [15:14] I think XFCE will gain a few user because of Unity [15:18] time will tell. Unity is a very nice desktop environment [18:30] I've got a neighbor on a pretty slow connection. The openjdk update is stalling and dying. Can I jsut grab a package off of my already updated computer and run over with a thumb drive to do the update that way? [18:32] My next question is... Is this package screwy anyway? As I was typing my last question, I got my own error that I "Failed to Open Package Files" and I'm trying to install that same package on this fresh xubuntu install [18:32] Lord_Rahl, Is that a Terry Goodkind nick you have? [18:40] Thanks love the books [18:40] that and I could not think of anything lol [18:42] I haven't read anything for a while, maybe the pillars one. Didn't he come out with something very "un" fantasy? [18:44] hes last book the laws of nine - that was still base on the same universe - [18:47] wikipedia said he coming out a new book soon [18:48] He was getting a bit political; the one where he's a slave and carves a statue. [18:49] true.. good story if you disregard all that. [18:50] I dont like the tv series at all it all messed up [19:19] Hi, I'm trying to install xubuntu 10.04 on an old 1.4GHz, 256MBs RAM laptop and it isn't working [19:20] I select to run Live CD and it shows the Xubuntu logo and then the screen goes blank and nothing happens [19:21] is there anything else I can try? I really don't wanna have to go back to XP on it [19:21] It will take it a while to run, with the limited ram. You can also try the alternate image [19:21] what's the alternate image? [19:21] I wait as much as 5 minutes to get screens on my old pc [19:21] which versionof Xubuntu? [19:21] I was trying to run 10.04LTS [19:22] alternate image is available here - http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/10.04/release/ [19:22] and it's been like 10 minutes and the screen is still blank [19:22] It installs without using the gui installer, which can be faster [19:23] I see [19:23] so the install is text based? [19:23] does the live desktop come up on the pc? [19:23] yes, the alternate cd uses a text-based installer [19:23] like I said, it's been 10 minutes and the screen is still blank. So how do I know that it will run once I get it installed? [19:24] could it be a video driver problem [19:24] I've gotten 9.04 to boot to desktop no problems [19:24] but there isn't any support for 9.04 anymore [19:24] Have you been able to get the 10.04 to boot to the desktop ? [19:24] no, it's still on a blank screen [19:25] I would nót install it then [19:25] try 10.10 instead [19:25] does 10.10 have better driver support? [19:25] If you can not get a desktop with the cd, you probably won't get one after installing [19:27] what graphics card, old intel? [19:28] yea [19:29] yea definitely intel [19:29] it's an old celeron m processor [19:29] not sure if that makes much of a difference [19:29] try nomodeset as boot option [19:29] or acpi=off [19:30] 10.10 might work better, newer drivers [19:30] i've also heard it's better on low-memory system [19:30] no acpi disables power modes, what does "nomodeset" do? [19:31] acpi handles more than that afaik, nomodeset is one ption for graphics driver [19:32] you can google for KMS [19:32] okay I'll try those boot options and if that doesn't work then I will try 10.10. Thank you [20:39] hello all. new to linux. using xubuntu. also first time on irc. i have spent 3 days working on a problem trying to get xorg to set my color depth to 16. probably 8 hours or so. anybody offer some help? [20:41] woody_noob: sure, start by pastebin-ing your xorg.conf and /var/log/Xorg.0.log [20:41] k [20:43] the Xorg.0.log is a few hundred lines long. mostly [ 4761.380] (EE) FBDEV(0): FBIOPUTCMAP: Invalid argument [20:44] geting xorg.conf now [20:46] when i "locate xorg.conf" from terminal i get 9 instances, all under /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d [20:46] when i try to use mousepad to open xorg.conf it is blank [20:47] oops. you said pastebin [20:47] i need to google how to do that. [20:48] !pastebin [20:48] For posting multi-line texts into the channel, please use http://paste.ubuntu.com | To post !screenshots use http://imagebin.org/?page=add | !pastebinit to paste directly from command line | Make sure you give us the URL for your paste - see also the channel topic. [20:48] yeah. i found it. doing it now [20:51] xorg.0.log is otw [20:53] woody_noob: ok, then what were you changing for the last 8 hours if not your xorg.conf? [20:53] http://paste.ubuntu.com/563555/ [20:53] well, mostly googleing not changing [20:54] i did add some stuff to the xorg.conf although it was blank to start with [20:54] it didn't like that much [20:54] woody_noob: ok, try this, edit your /etc/default/grub [20:55] cant pastbin xorg.conf due to it being blank [20:55] woody_noob: as root [20:55] sudo mousepade /etc/default/grug [20:55] like that [20:55] grub [20:55] but yes [20:55] there should be a line like GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="splash" [20:55] or "quiet splash" [20:56] quiet splash [20:56] add a "nomodeset" to it, so that it reads "quiet splash nomodeset" [20:56] k [20:56] then run [20:56] sudo grub-update [20:57] to write your changes [20:57] and reboot to see if it works [20:58] k. doing. [21:00] rebooting [21:03] woody_noob: any luck? [21:04] it booted. should i know look to see if xorg.conf is blank? [21:05] still blank [21:05] it will stay blank [21:05] look if you still have the errors in the log [21:05] k [21:08] http://paste.ubuntu.com/563566/ [21:08] still has errors [21:10] do you know what graphics card you have? [21:10] what does lspci | grep VGA say? [21:11] intel 815 [21:11] i'll look in lspci tho [21:12] woody@woody-MX3560:~$ lspci | grep VGA [21:12] 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device (rev 02) [21:12] glxgears looks good [21:13] problem is 815 chip doens't do 3d acceleration in 24 color depth, only 16 [21:19] I assume you have looked at the forums? [21:19] You might ask on #ubuntu, that part is the same and there are way more people in there [21:20] k [21:20] thanks for your help bro. [21:20] or bro-ette [22:37] Does Xubuntu use the same network manager thing as (Gnome) Ubuntu? [23:15] I could not get the BTRFS to work with my setup of 11.04 - natty for xubuntu.
