Gumbyhi all.  I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to get X to use the proper display size.  X seems to be able to detect my LCD is capable of 1920x1080 however when I choose this resolution the right of my screen and bottom of the  screen are actually off the physical display and I cant see that area.  Trying to figure out how to fix this00:21
Gumbyusing nvidia 330m gpu and nouveau obviously00:22
=== SiGTERM_ is now known as SiGTERM
coz_Gumby,   have you done  recent updates?00:35
coz_Gumby,   I believe nvidia-common has been removed and nvidia is not working correctly00:35
Gumbycoz_,  sorry for the slow reply.  yes, I have.  this is why I am using nouveau and not the nvidia drivers.01:08
coz_ah ok01:08
coz_Gumby,   I havent done the updates  for that reason,,, so I have no solutions around the resolution with nouveau01:08
GumbyX seems to think my res is 2048x1536.01:09
Gumbyhowever no matter what res I choose, the screen extends off of the left and bottom of the LCD.01:12
Gumbysorry, right and bottom01:12
Lusosohey. how r u01:53
Lusosoat this time , does Xorg show any video boosts  to existing cards?01:54
coz_Lusoso,   I dont think I completely understand01:57
LusosoNatty Warhog has a new XORG version. A significant jump.01:57
coz_ok01:58
Lusosoof the cards that still work, have any shown noticeable eye candy?01:58
coz_Lusoso,  if you mean ..the cards that work ...do they work with any of the 'eyecandy"  stuff like compiz  then  yes01:59
Lusososome candy is hot. as in you can't work fast enough to not suffer from a fireball candy01:59
Lusosoi guess i mean performance01:59
coz_oh01:59
coz_Lusoso,  well that would be the drivers for the cards  and the eyecandy applications  as far as performance goes ...yes?02:00
GumbyNatty Warhog?02:00
coz_depending on the capabilities of the card itself02:00
coz_oh lol I just saw that02:01
Lusosoyes. i really hope there is a boost to it02:01
coz_lucent_,  you mean natty narwhoi02:01
Gumbynarwhal02:01
Gumbyhehe02:01
Lusosonatty also uses that new linux patch for extra speed02:01
coz_Lusoso,  well as far as I understand you then again i would suggest that the video driver and the eyecandy applications are going to be more responsible for performance02:01
coz_narwhal   I mean02:02
LusosoNatty warhog02:02
bazhangthat's not the name02:02
Lusososorry i never was taught about narwhals02:02
coz_lucent_,  natty narwhal   ..names start with the same letters02:03
coz_"N"02:03
GumbyLusoso, I think you need to do a bit more research02:03
LusosoNothing New. <- like that02:03
LusosoGumby, the information is already out there.02:03
GumbyThe next release is Natty Narwhal.  Warty Warthog was an old release02:03
gpcsomething like Lusoso lies02:03
coz_Lusoso,  are you actually running 11.04 now?02:03
gpcsee the two L's02:03
Lusosoaccording to mine it says so02:03
GumbyLusoso, where does it say this?02:04
coz_Lusoso,   which version are you running at this moment?02:04
Gumbycat /etc/lsb-release02:04
Lusosooh it has been changed02:04
coz_or   lsb_release -a02:04
Lusosofor a while i guess we really had a About issue where 10.10 said 11.02:04
rwwdid that get fixed? I haven't checked02:04
Lusosoon mine it shows 10.10 now.02:05
coz_ok02:05
rwwwoot02:05
bazhangrww, yes fixed02:05
rwwyeah, I just found and checked LP. am glad that got sorted out.02:05
BreetaiZentradiI all. I have an Acer Aspire 4530 with Nvidia GeForce 9100M video card. When I run the natty-alpha-2 . My screen is mirrored multiple times on the display, anyone have any idea how to get around this?02:16
Lusosoare you using an external monitor02:17
BreetaiZentradiLusoso: No using the built in display02:19
Lusosohave you tried a live Cd02:20
BreetaiZentradiYes, I have tried Ubuntu and Xubuntu, I have installed off of a live CD and from an alternative CD. It does not matter, I still end up with the display issue.02:22
Lusosoyou booted from a live cd02:22
Lusosohave you tried02:22
BreetaiZentradiI have also booted from a USB and installed to the hard drive. I have tried it in several other computers Like a Dell OptiPlex 280 (intel graphics) and it works fine in everything but the Aspire 453002:26
* Gumby is also having X issues. 02:29
Gumbyscreen is displaying off the right and bottom of LCD02:29
GumbyI think X thinks that the native res is 2048x1536 when it should be 1920x108002:30
Lusosoi will check the hotkey for the screen resolution and or monitor02:32
Lusosobut it may be different in 11.0402:32
Lusosotoggle maximization state alt f-10. that is probably not zoom.02:33
Lusosoum02:33
LusosoMod4+D hides all normal windows and sets focus to desktop02:35
Lusosodoes this mirror effect prevent you from logging in?02:36
Lusosoyou might be able to set auto-login if you reinstall. then it is just a matter of pressing the hotkey02:36
SeverianHowdy.  I installed using the alternate installer of Alpha-2.  After booting, I get a grub menu, and then get dumped to an initramfs prompt.  I have been looking for some info on what to do next, but have not found anything.  Can someone suggest something?04:40

trijntje_nattyHi all, Jocky is giving this error when I try to enable the driver for my Ati:20:33
trijntje_nattySystemError: E:Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.20:34
trijntje_nattybut I dont have any broken packages (at least thats what apt says). Is there any way to fix this?20:35
Daekdroomtrijntje_natty, as far as I know, the fglrx packages themselves are broken20:37
trijntje_nattyyeah, but I would expect jockey to say 'there is no ...' if that were the case20:39
DaekdroomOnce the ubuntu version is released, such breakage is highly unlikely to happen20:39
trijntje_nattyplus, how am I to find out if the fglrx packages are fixed when I cant test that with jockey20:39
DaekdroomYou're probably gonna be able to install them once they're fixed.20:40
DaekdroomIf you can't, that means they're still broken20:40
trijntje_nattyDaekdroom, ok cool, then ill wait for that, thanks20:41
trijntje_nattyIts no big deal, i'm just running natty from a spare harddisk out of curiosity.20:41
HotrootsoupTitanHey22:55
HotrootsoupTitanHaving some bad problems with my Natty install22:55
HotrootsoupTitanProblem being it wont install22:56
HotrootsoupTitanNot that this is the room for that or anything...22:58
* nemo is still waiting for some useful info22:59
HotrootsoupTitanAlright22:59
HotrootsoupTitanI've had a plethora of problems with Natty, even though the disk checks out as good22:59
nemosoooo. disc errors?22:59
HotrootsoupTitanThe only way I can even get in to live, or install mode is by using the 2nd acessability feature23:00
HotrootsoupTitanI've managed to install it once, but it then was ruined after installing nvidia drivers and all the ubuntu updates23:00
nemoHotrootsoupTitan: often going to advanced options and disabling acpi/apic and setting "free software drivers only" (if on an nvidia card) can be helpful23:00
nemoto get the installer booting23:00
nemooh, and delete quiet and splash so you can see how far it gets and note what the last error was, if any23:01
HotrootsoupTitanWell I'm in live mode now, but while installing it crashes23:01
HotrootsoupTitanHalf the time it says my CD/Drive/HD might be bad, the others it just kinda crashes23:01
nemoit might be...23:01
nemoor your disc23:01
nemohave you run disc check already?23:02
nemoif you remove quiet and splash, you might see I/O errors on boot23:02
HotrootsoupTitanYeah, the MD5 on the original ISO, and disc check twice23:02
nemoone more reason to try that (+ the ACPI stuff)23:02
HotrootsoupTitanI've been trying the accessability features23:02
HotrootsoupTitanOr whatever they are called, the F6 ones23:02
nemoI had IO errors w/ my portable USB cdrom drive, but luckily I didn't actually need the entire CD at the time23:02
HotrootsoupTitanYeah, I get IO errors to23:03
nemoHotrootsoupTitan: what kind of crash. like, X11 dies, locks up, does ssh and ping work?23:03
HotrootsoupTitanThe installer gives me a crash message, then takes me back to live mode23:03
nemoHotrootsoupTitan: might want to try a flash drive instead, if your computer supports flash boot23:03
HotrootsoupTitanIn live mode right now23:03
nemook. what's the crash message23:03
nemopulling teeth here23:03
HotrootsoupTitanI'm not sure if it does, I'll try23:03
HotrootsoupTitanThe crash message varies23:03
nemoFYI, that's probably what you should mention on joining room, just paste the message :)23:03
nemoor messages23:03
nemoheck. I didn't even know it was the installer until we had this looooong back and forth23:04
HotrootsoupTitanYeah, its my first time doing all this23:04
nemoin general, anything more than "won't install" is helpful to get more responses23:04
HotrootsoupTitanWhen I got Natty to be a bug tester, I kinda hoped the bugs would be after install, lol23:04
HotrootsoupTitanAlright, I'll take a screenie of my next install attempt23:05
nemoI/O errors suggest to me a bad drive though23:05
HotrootsoupTitanWould be LSHW be useful?23:05
nemowhy screenshot?23:05
nemoyou don't have internet while on live CD?23:05
nemojust pastebin that stuff23:05
HotrootsoupTitanOh, right23:05
nemoheck. might want to pastebin bottom bit of dmesg and xsession errors23:05
HotrootsoupTitanIts a GUI error message though, I don't think its copy/pasteable23:05
nemothose two might be23:05
PiciAnyone else experiencing weird input problems with gnome-terminal?23:05
nemoheck, ideally you'd be on here while signed on from the live CD23:06
HotrootsoupTitanTrue23:06
HotrootsoupTitanI'll just report it like that23:06
nemoPici: personally, my only problem was chrome disappearing23:06
HotrootsoupTitanIs my LSHW necessary?23:06
nemoeven after I switched to metacity due to that new window manager being so annoying23:06
HotrootsoupTitanI have that up on pastebin23:06
PiciHrm.  I'm experimenting using xfce4-terminal to see if the issue is local or with the host I'm connecting to.23:06
nemoHotrootsoupTitan: guess it couldn't hurt, dunno23:06
HotrootsoupTitanhttp://pastebin.com/1i1vmPHE23:07
HotrootsoupTitanAlright, going to attempt install again23:07
nemoif unity wasn't so crashy and insistent on placing windows half-offscreen I might have tried putting up with it for more than 15 minutes23:07
HotrootsoupTitanI am digging the new top-bar though23:07
nemo1) crashy compiz 2) no obvious way to disable the heavy heavy shadows that slowed down all my windows on the intel card 3) placing windows off-screen23:07
HotrootsoupTitanI like the email/chat thing, and all that23:08
nemoHotrootsoupTitan: eh. on laptops I've always rearranged things on one bar.23:08
nemoHotrootsoupTitan: if I want that lil' unity bar there are some gnome projects out there for that kinda thing already23:08
HotrootsoupTitanI've notice Natty is slow on the internal graphics card...23:08
HotrootsoupTitanYeah, I know, but I do kinda like it23:09
HotrootsoupTitanThat its right built in and stuff23:09
nemoperformance went way up after I switched to metacity23:09
nemowhat irritates me is I used to get decent performance with a minimal compiz23:09
nemobasically, I just want to have gaussian blur on translucent gnome terminals, and no shadows or other silliness23:10
nemois weird, is like unity has infected compiz or something, though23:10
HotrootsoupTitanAbout to click install now...23:13
HotrootsoupTitanJust got an IO error23:14
HotrootsoupTitanErrno 523:14
HotrootsoupTitanI'm going to try to install on my 40 GB instead of my 8023:15
HotrootsoupTitanRight after I clicked finish on the personal info part to...23:15
genii-aroundAre there md5 sums for daily builds?23:16
HotrootsoupTitanYeah, I think so23:16
nemoHotrootsoupTitan: anything in dmesg / xsession errors?23:17
HotrootsoupTitanDon't think so, it didn't say anything. Is there some place I should check?23:17
nemoin those 2 files?23:17
nemoer23:17
nemo1 file, 1 program output23:17
HotrootsoupTitanWhere are they located?23:19
nemoHotrootsoupTitan: wow, you're new to linux I take it23:21
nemostarting with a beta23:21
nemoliving dangerously I see23:21
DaekdroomThe first time I used linux it was Ubuntu 7.10 RC23:23
nemohm23:24
nemoI was going to answer him, just had to get some work stuff done23:24
nemooh well23:24
nemoDaekdroom: Redhat 3 personally :)23:25
