JackyAlcineNo, you're in the right place.15:27
richardcurranThanks Jacky15:27
JackyAlcinerichardcurran: And upgrading in the sense of upgrade to a new release?15:27
richardcurranWell I'm going to try and upgrade my ProFTPD15:28
richardcurranto 1.3.3d15:28
richardcurranfrom 1.3.115:28
JackyAlcineIsn't that a downgrade?15:28
richardcurranhaha don't start!15:29
richardcurranI 1.3.1 is older than 1.3.3d15:29
richardcurranthe reason I need to do this is to become compliant for PCI DSS15:29
richardcurranNormally I'd have asked my web developer to do this sort of thing, but I've run out of money and now I'm my own webdeveloper15:30
richardcurran:(15:30
JackyAlcineWell, usually projects like these have source code that you can compile and utilize.15:30
richardcurranI thought that before I do anything I'd find where I can go for help if (/when) it all goes wrong15:30
JackyAlcineIf you installed 1.3.3d from your repos, then you should uninstall from there first.15:31
JackyAlcineOtherwise, you could find the 1.3.3d's source and run a sudo make uninstall to remove it.15:31
JackyAlcineThen you can download 1.3.1 and compile it back into your system.15:31
JackyAlcineJust requires a bit of terminal knowledge.15:32
richardcurranHi thanks sorry I think I mistyped earlier on, I am actually upgrading from 1.3.1 TO 1.3.3d15:32
JackyAlcineLol, ah!15:32
richardcurranand from the documentation it appears that I need to go ahead and compile a new version, rather than "update"15:32
JackyAlcineThen just do the reverse.15:32
richardcurran^ yes I thought i might have to15:33
JackyAlcineNo,15:33
JackyAlcinewait, if the documentation said to do otherwise, then do so, it might not only preserve your settings, but that means less configuration for you.15:33
richardcurranthis is when you use a file on your local machine, the make file, to install the package? is that right?15:35
richardcurranlikewise for uninstalling?15:35
richardcurranunfortunately I don't have the original set of files on my local machine15:35
richardcurranAnyone have experience of upgrading PROftpd here?15:49
duanedesignrichardcurran: it is in the repository15:53
duanedesigni guess the package is proftpd-basic15:55
duanedesignthe command -  apt-cache search proftpd  - can show you the available packages15:56
duanedesignif you are interested in installing an application not in the repos (compiling) there is a nice doc on the wiki https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CompilingEasyHowTo15:58

FanshaweYes, for Nautilus, or whatever Ubuntus file browser is called.18:25
aveilleuxFanshawe: Files are "opened". "folders" (properly called "directories") are browsed.18:25
ddecatorright, folders will always open within nautilus18:26
JackyAlcineor dolphin.18:26
ddecatorJackyAlcine: if you use kubuntu :)18:26
aveilleuxor PCManFM18:26
FanshaweYes. But at one time I used an 'open with' function on a folder, I think I was opening an album in a media player.18:26
FanshaweI'm trying to remove that option from the context menu now.18:27
aveilleuxFanshawe: That's a function of the menu itself, not the "open with" submenu.18:27
aveilleuxFanshawe: This should help you out http://techthrob.com/2009/03/02/howto-add-items-to-the-right-click-menu-in-nautilus/18:28
aveilleuxFanshawe: I know it says "add" but I assume the same utility can be used to remove items as well.18:28
s-foxGoodbye.18:29
FanshaweA screen shot does show a 'delete' function. I'll try it out.18:29
ddecator...was that silverfox?18:29
FanshaweOr, someone else has recommended I navigate to '~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list'.18:30
FanshaweI've got it. Thank you all.18:34

head_victimtool88: surely can, just make sure you adjust the grub entries so you don't get them confused :D21:18
tool88will ubuntu do the partion like windows21:18
tool88not sure how to do that21:19
head_victimtool88: depends on what you mean by "like windows"21:19
tool88iso it runs side by side i mean21:19
bioterrorofcourse21:20
tool88so how would i adjust the grub then?21:20
bioterrorit should ajust itself automatically ;)21:20
tool88ok thats what i was hoping21:21
bioterrormmm21:21
bioterrornot it wont, I think :D21:21
head_victimYeah, I was just saying if you have the same kernels and the same everything else you might want to adjust them manually so you can tell them apart easily21:21
tool88well the one i was going to mess with the nvidia driver21:22
tool88after i install the driver i lose my gui21:22
tool88so i wanted to mess with the one till i got it right21:22
bioterroryou dont need another installation for that21:23
bioterroryou can always remove xorg.conf and remove certain packages and start from the beginning21:23
tool88after i lose my gui i cant get to the recovery screen21:23
tool88it dosnt show21:23

asterismohi people21:38
asterismoi have a problem21:39
asterismois there any way to recover deleted and empty trashed files from an EXT4 external 500GB hard drive?21:39
holsteincheck out http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec asterismo21:40
holsteini use it from http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/21:40
holsteinmight be an easier way though21:40
asterismoi already tried scalpel, but it extracted several 47 MB avi files... i want to recover a bunch of avi files from 700 MB to 2 GB in size21:41
asterismobut the drive is ok21:42
* holstein never used scalpel21:42
holsteinphotorec shouldnt care what size or filetype21:43
asterismois just that i deleted some large files and empty trash, and then realized that i had no backuo21:43
asterismobackup, so i should try to recover, like undelete21:43
asterismobut scalpel did not worked at all21:43
holsteinsure21:43
holsteinor try using photorec21:43
holsteinliterally cant hurt21:44
asterismobut does PhotoRec support AVI files?21:44
holsteinphotorec just grabs21:44
holsteinit dont care what its grabbing21:44
holsteinit doesnt 'support' anything really21:44
holsteinor not support anything that is*21:44
holsteini bet it works great on drives that are still working properly21:45
holsteinim usually using it on failing hardware21:45
holsteinwith surprising results21:45
asterismoi see that it is somehow related to testdisk21:47
asterismoi tried testdisk but did not figure out how it works21:47
holsteinthats why i use it from http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/21:47
holsteinits in the menu21:47
holsteinin partedmagic or whatever21:48
holsteindo what you want, but i think its safe to say21:48
holsteinif photorec dont get em21:48
holsteinyou can give up21:48
bioterrorholstein, trinity rescue kit is also good tool21:53
SpaceDuck_Is there any issue with leaving directories mounted (Windows shares and FTPs)? Are they alway connected or do the timeout after awhile like a normal FTP client?22:43
head_victimI've never had one time out22:44
SpaceDuck_I meant more disconnect wen idle22:44
head_victimI've had samba shares mounted for weeks on end without a hitch. I'd say it's something you could set up to time out though22:44
head_victimAh well the folder sits on my desktop for weeks on end even when not in use, might not have a connection open permanently though if that's what you mean.22:45
SpaceDuck_I'm more concerned about the FTP.... I leave the computer on 24/7 and don't want to be connected to the ftp that long.22:46
SpaceDuck_so if it's mounted... it's connected?22:46
SpaceDuck_I was hoping I didn't need to mount and unmount... I guess I was hoping ubunut would automount on demand or something22:47
head_victimIt's able to be used, it might not actually have data travelling over the network 24/7. I'm sure you could set the server up to drop connections after they have been idle for x amount of time.22:48
SpaceDuck_heh, I think I've been connected to my ftp for a week22:48
SpaceDuck_or at least it's been mounted for a week22:49
head_victimYeah sorry I'm not technical enough to differentiate between "connected" and "mounted" sorry :/  I would have to go do some googling to be sure22:49
