Cheri703Unit193: check out "no ordinary family" it's pretty good, we are on the second episode03:19
Unit193Cheri703: I'll check it out. I just started playing with Pandora today!04:10
Cheri703nice04:10
Unit193pianobar is a nice little program for it too...04:11
canthus13pianobar rocks... until it stops working and they have to rewrite it because pandora changed their api.04:11
Unit193canthus13: Would it make you feel better if I told you I haven't used synaptic in a bit? (apt-cache and apt-get all the way!)04:33
Cheri703Unit193: I'm going to bring that laptop tomorrow night04:33
Unit193Cheri703: I'll try to remember to bring the cord04:34
Cheri703kk04:34
Cheri703my awesome friends are loaning us their car tomorrow through the weekend04:36
canthus13Unit193: I use apt-get for most stuff.04:43
canthus13Unit193: synaptic's good for finding something when I'm not quite sure what I'm looking for... but apt-get is faster. :)04:43
Unit193If I don't know, I use apt-cache search04:46
Unit193What do you use for terminal RSS?04:46
canthus13I don't.04:47
canthus13I don't use RSS.04:48
canthus13I've tried, but I inevitably get so far behind that it's not worth it.04:48
Unit193I guess I'll stick with canto. I just have a few (Weather, NotAlwaysRight, portableapps, GAOTD, etc)04:51
Unit193Alpine or mutt?04:52
Cheri703my google reader account has over 75 feeds...possibly more04:54
Unit193I use google reader for LH and will start with things that have pics *cough*failblog*cough*04:56
canthus13mutt04:56
thafreakpaultag: you around?14:02
thafreakpaultag: who was that guy we had dinner with at OLF who headed up canonical's arm development?14:03
thafreakI'm looking to get the latest from the makers of the sheeva plug...but before I drop $150, I wanna see if there's better hardware out there14:04
thafreakI figured that guy would know14:04
robho-neosup people14:35
paultagthafreak: humm?18:06
thafreakpaultag: who was the guy who went to dinner with us after OLF...with jorge...he was the ARM dev lead19:29
paultagthafreak: dave mandella19:29
paultagyeah he was :)19:29
thafreakah cool19:29
thafreakhe's not anymore?19:29
paultagstill is :)19:29
paultagbut he was too19:29
thafreakoh ok19:29
thafreakI'm curious if there's much tiny hardware out there (besides the sheeva plug)19:30
paultagthafreak: shiva is hella old19:30
thafreakI figured he might be aware19:30
deejoemarvell has also got a little non-plug box19:30
paultagthafreak: guru plug is the new one I think19:30
paultagdeejoe: really/19:30
paultag?*19:30
thafreakexactly, and the replacements have bad reviews (heat problems)19:30
paultagthafreak: +119:31
deejoepaultag: OpenRD19:31
deejoeopen-rd.org19:31
thafreakthey have a newer one...using the same guts, but better heat disipation...supposedly19:31
thafreakthey say "From $149", but all the vendors listed want "$249"...19:34
thafreakgrr...for that much, I'd build a mini-itx or something19:34
deejoeI guess if one were to do this on an OEM basis, it might make more sense?19:35
deejoealso, I don't know how mini-ITX with some sort of Intel-like processor would compare in terms of power profile.19:35
deejoeor TDP, depending on which side of that equation you care about more.19:35
thafreakwell, not much...cost is the most important part of the equation for me :)19:36
thafreakI've seen some mini-itx boards with pico-psu's that only draw about 15w...which is still pretty good19:37
thafreaknot as good as 5w, but still better than the 100-200 that normal pc's draw19:37
thafreakoh well...my goal is for something small and durable, that can run at a client's location 24/7, for me to ssh into...19:38
thafreakmight get a pogo plug and put debian on it...can get those for < $7519:39
Cheri703once you guys are done discussing what you're discussing, I have a question (but seriously, not urgent)19:40
canthus13I think they're done.19:44
BiosElementProbably19:45
BiosElementAnd oh dear god, another idiot thought it'd be funny to attack Anonymous.19:45
Cheri703I have a client that originally wanted a desktop, but now is considering a laptop. I think they should stick with desktop, it's for a business office. I am trying to make a list of arguments against laptop...so far I have "more for your money, less chance of catastrophic failure due to a single piece failing, and if your desire for laptop is so you can access data when out of the office, I can set up remote access that will accomp19:46
Cheri703lish the same thing"19:46
Cheri703so...any thoughts are welcome19:46
thafreakyeah, I hate laptops19:47
BiosElementPoint out that reparing a laptop generally requires hoping the maker will still service it. >.< Desktops are just a trip to the comp store.19:47
thafreakMy one client just replaced every sales person's computer with a laptop...I hate it so much19:48
Cheri703yeah, I have 2 laptops sitting at my house that are really decent but unusable due to a single part failing19:48
Cheri703I go the "netbook + remote access" route19:48
Cheri703saves money overall19:48
thafreakI hope citrix's XenDesktop mobile computing ideas take off19:48
thafreaktoo bad they require winbloze server...and I could never get it working in my test setup19:49
Cheri703this is an office that currently has an old dell with a 1.93ghz processor and 256MB of ram....and no internet...I really don't think they need a laptop at this point. I'm also going to be putting ubuntu on their comp, so that'll be interesting19:50
Cheri703Sorry, my internet is going in and out for some stupid reason :(20:07
deejoelaptops make OK Nth computers, but never a good only computer20:36
deejoes/never/rarely/20:36
TheErkHola20:36
Unit193Hello TheErk!20:36
TheErkHello Unit19320:37
Cheri703true deejoe20:38
canthus13BiosElement: Depends on the laptop.20:51
canthus13BiosElement: there are plenty of shops out there that repair laptop motherboard issues...20:51
BiosElementcanthus13: keyword shops, and if you're lucky. >.<20:52
canthus13BiosElement: Nah. You may have to send your laptop in for repairs, but there's a guy in Lebanon, OH that does amazing work for a reasonable price.20:57
BiosElementcanthus13: I'm sure there is. I just see it as somewhat riskier.20:57
canthus13BiosElement: I used ebay to find him. dude has excellent reviews, so I felt pretty comfortable sending my old laptop to him. he had teh solder reflowed and the laptop back to me in 3 days... Evenr eplaced the CMOS battery at no charge. :)20:58
BiosElementNice20:59
thafreakSSD or CF to SATA adapter?21:02
canthus13thafreak: SSD.21:37
canthus13CF-SATA would pretty slow, I'd think.21:37
canthus13If speed's not an issue, though, go for CF-SSA. it's cheaper.21:37
Cheri703Unit193: still at home?22:50

Cheri703?23:16
BiosElementAnon totally screws over HBGary, a 'security' company after their loud mouth CEO declared 'war' on them, now after losing 60k emails he says he'll destroy anon. Awesome.23:16
* BiosElement waits for him to show up on the FBI's most wanted list thanks to anon >.>23:16
BiosElementHe thought it'd get him press by claiming to be able to take down anon's "leadership". >.<23:17
