BillgHello.  I'm installing the dev tools on a current dev release, and I'm following the directions according to the beginners wiki page.  It said to create a file ~/.pbuilderrc and run sudo pbuilder create  ... but when I did that it said " root/.pbuilderrc file does not exist" but it went on creating pbuilder.  Should I worry about this?01:56
hajourphillw do you know who can help Billg ?02:01
UndiFineDsorry Billg I think noone available knows at this time02:01
UndiFineDpeople who do know are away02:02
BillgI'll just mess around with it and see if i can get it working02:10
nhandlerBillg: Are you logged in as root?02:26
Billghow do i check that?02:37
nhandlerBillg: whoami02:40
Billgthe command whoami just returned my user name, but I think my user is an adminastrator but when i type sudo etc it still asks for password and i still return to my user name directory when i type cd02:50
zkriessesudo is the command for granting temp ROOT user powers02:51
Billgso how do i change myself so im not an adminstrator -- how to from command line? the gui way is not allowing orca to read it02:55
nhandlerWell, sudo shouldn't mess with the environment variables, so I'm not sure why it is looking at root/.pbuilderrc. I would have to play around some more. If it did creae the chroot though and you can build in it, you are probably fine02:57
Billgwell it worked to build othe hello package like it said to try on the beginner website, but it still gave me error when i did that but continued and worked fine.  It put the results in the right directory as specified by the webpage.. it seems to be working fine.  I'm just wondering if there is something important in the .pbuilderrc file it needs later on03:02

ray_Hmm, I want to ask this, but I am likely going to rally people who have xbox receivers to file a bug for me. Which in turn I want to do to make Ubuntu better.05:10
AbhijiT??05:12
ray_One of my xbox 360 wireless receivers has gone out, so I looked it up and it could be that the F1 fuse has burned out. Is there a way for the maintainers of it with Ubuntu to have it so that before it burns out that the receiver is turned off ahead of time?05:12
ray_Before it over heats?05:13
ddecatorlike a wireless controller dongle for your computer?05:13
ray_usb, yes05:13
ddecatorah, ok...i have no idea, haha05:14
ray_It's cool05:14
ray_Also the xbox 360 wireless controller's triggers don't work right05:15
ray_And the problem with the led lights blinking was never fixed but that one done't bother me05:15
ray_Well, that's it for me.05:16
ray_Is there a channel Ubuntu joystick related?05:17
ddecatornot that i know of..05:17
ray_Ah ha, they have an artwork team.05:18
ray_Sorry to say I don't like purple, or brown and I didn't like the blue used for Kubuntu. Or is it Kbuntu?05:19
ray_Must be Kubuntu05:19
ray_I don't want to upset them05:19
ray_hmm05:19
ray_I will have to avoid saying what I didn't like.05:20
ddecatoryah it's kubuntu, and that's why there are so many themes to choose from :)05:20
ray_I thought they did well, but I like blue05:20
ray_Everyone has there opinion.05:21
ray_I once tried themes, but I gave up trying that from the Ubuntu Software Center.05:21
ray_Instead, I have 2 themes05:21
ddecatori don't know if that works well or not. in kubuntu there is a way to download more themes right from the theme selection window05:22
ddecatorgnome-look is a popular choice for finding themes for ubuntu, but a couple of things on there have been found to contain malware :/05:23
ray_Black and white. With white as text. With the controls as industrial, selected colors 0600CD, window border Clearlooks05:23
ray_With white and blue I have:05:23
ray_window border as clearlooks, controls as clearlooks, for colors: window E8F7FF, in boxes white, selected items 0028FF text for selected items is white, and tool tips white05:26
ray_I went to gnomelook over the months to find blue icon themes that I would like05:27
ray_Bluestep humanity is more to my liking, but I was shooting for Bluemanity but with out the hint of purple. I was hoping for Blue to black without light blue, and if there is any light blue I don't want gray which is why I don't like the Kubuntu look.05:29
ray_Before they changed the loggin them I was happy because I had found this:05:30
ray_oops05:30
ray_see if this works05:30
ray_Hardy-blue Brave 2 GDM05:30
ray_OK, I don't know why that happened. OK, I think I know what happened05:31
ray_I must have copied with right clicking without thinking instead of right click rename, copy with Ctrl-C. O well05:31
ray_See you dude05:32
yax51I'm looking for a good DVD ripper, any suggestions05:37
humanitylosHello everyone, I am having an issue, I have 2 external hard-drives and every time I switch between Windows 7 and Ubuntu and then back I am having issues with windows either not recognizing the file system or it says its gone bad06:09
humanitylosdoes anyone know a fix for this? (and i need windows so dont say delete it lol)06:09
AbhijiThumanitylos, may be try in ##windows06:10
humanitylosYa ill try that next but most windows ppl dont know ubuntu so I wanted to check here..06:11
ray_I decided to keep Windows XP on my other computer. I hope to never have to have a dual boot of Windows and Linux but I would like to learn someday how to make it work. But the only way to do that is to have a setup to have to work out the problems over years to truly understand how to maintain it.06:28

bioterrorrokyronnie, maybe problem with chromium, I dunno. I use beta from ppa and no probs.13:38
evilbuclawrokyronnie, Chromium is beta (for time being), Flash is (and always will be) the product of 'meh' quality.13:38
bioterrorhahaha13:39
bioterrorflash is teh...13:39
bioterrorI cannot find enough describing adjective13:39
evilbuclawbioterror, 'meh' with a capital 'meh'13:39
rokyronnieand what can I do ? Firefox works very very hard, and slow, it takes so long to load a page13:40
evilbuclawrokyronnie, it's likely a Chromium problem though. Having all processes in jailroot containers causes strange things to happen with plugins. n_n13:40
rokyronnieI understand13:41
evilbuclawthere's lots of 'speed up firefox' guides out there.13:41

Puck`rokyronnie: you could try installing Chrome and not chromium13:49
Puck`there might be some changes between the two13:49
rokyronnieto be honest with you guys, I like Firefox very much, if this will work, I'll be very happy13:50
walkkennSound problems with 10.4 netbook remix and ASUS 1001pxd (Realtek ALC259)14:22
walkkennThe internal microphone is not recognized. When I plug in a mike and headset I have no sound at all. When I run the alsamixer there is no mute box below the PCM, Mike Boost and Capture fields. They are only on the first two fields (master and speaker). I used the sound guide that was posted on the website, but, honestly I'm afraid that I am just making the problem worse. I have looked through the different threads and nothing14:22

holsteinyou should be able to find a work around for this18:05
alienmindtrickhmmm18:06
alienmindtrickwell, i've been hearing that for months. except that no one can help me fix it. also, as i recall now, it did this even when i had 10.04 LTS, before updating to 10.1018:06
alienmindtrickso as to a fresh install...i don't think that would be advantageous18:07
holsteincould be a bug18:07
alienmindtrickmmhmm18:07
alienmindtricki've submitted it as such. haven't heard anything.18:07
holsteinwell, it would get whatever tweaks you have done out of the equation18:07
holsteinalienmindtrick: what are you expecting to hear?18:07
alienmindtricki've also looked high and low, trying to do due diligence18:07
holsteinwheres the report?18:07
holsteinyou might could link it in here18:07
holsteinsee if its been confirmed18:07
alienmindtricki thought i might find something on it in a forum18:07
holsteini will try it18:07
holsteinwhen i have more time18:08
alienmindtrickright18:08
holsteinand confirm it18:08
alienmindtrickholstein:  http://ubuntugeek.com/forum/index.php/topic,4041.0.html18:09
alienmindtrickthat's not the first time i've posted it, either. that was just my latest round of frustration18:10
holsteinyeah18:10
holsteinthats not offical ubuntu support though18:10
alienmindtrickoh?18:10
holsteinim suggesting a bug report18:10
holsteinthats ubuntugeek18:10
alienmindtricki thought that WAS a bug report18:10
holsteinwhich is fine18:10
holsteinim just saying18:10
holsteinlet me dig up what im talking about...18:10
alienmindtrickwell, what is a bug report?18:10
holsteinalienmindtrick: heres one i did18:11
holsteinhttps://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntustudio/+bug/69589318:11
ubot2Launchpad bug 695893 in ubuntustudio "JACK wont start with presonus firepod and generic kernel" [Undecided,Confirmed]18:11
alienmindtrickif you mean on the main ubuntu fora, yes, i've done that18:11
holsteinsee how its 'confirmed'18:11
holsteinthats what im suggesting i can do for you18:11
holsteini'll try it18:11
holsteinand if i have the same problem18:12
holsteini'll say i do18:12
holsteinand then it can be marked confirmed18:12
holsteinTHEN, maybe we can get someone to look at it18:12
holsteinassuming its a bug18:12
holstein*18:12
alienmindtrickokey dokey18:12
holsteinthe forums are great too18:12
holsteinbut, this is really where the dev would be looking18:12
holsteinIF it comes to that18:13
alienmindtrickwell, my one pet peeve with ubuntu is the many different official seeming fora18:13
holsteinalienmindtrick: i hear you18:13
holsteinBUT, ubuntugeek is its own thing18:13
alienmindtrickok, let me do this report18:13
alienmindtrickthe thing about ubuntugeek is that you normally get answers18:13
holsteinyou need a launchpad account for bugs18:13
alienmindtrickif you go to the main ubuntu forum, you get lost.18:14
holsteinalienmindtrick: hey, ubuntugeek is great18:14
alienmindtricki think that for beginners, ubuntu geek is much easier.18:14
alienmindtrickoh! i'm already registered there.18:15
alienmindtrickwhich means that i've already posted this there.18:15
holsteinprobably18:15
holsteinjust make sure you do a bug report about it18:15
* alienmindtrick blushes and looks embarrassed18:15
alienmindtrickokey dokey18:15
holsteinIF you want anything official to happen18:15
holsteina forum post can be ignored18:15
holsteina bug report can be too18:15
holsteinBUT, its more official18:16
alienmindtricki'm reminded of what my primary russian instructor used to say in monterey: for every 8 exceptions, there's a new rule. but there are exceptions.18:16
holsteincheck https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs18:16
alienmindtrickit's ok18:16
alienmindtricki do technical writing18:16
alienmindtricki'm sure i can do a bug report18:16
holsteintheres just a bit more responsibility on the user here18:17
alienmindtrickalrighty. thanks a million holstein18:17
holsteindoing bugs properly is a lot of work too18:17
holsteini did it once18:17
holsteinwith 10.0418:17
holsteinfrom beta or alpha18:17
holsteintrying to keep up with them18:17
alienmindtrickat any rate, it's far better than windoze!18:17
alienmindtrick;)18:17
holsteinand report properly18:17
holsteincan be challenging18:18
johnny77I'm trrying to clean up my windows partition so that I can move it again, giving more space to ubuntu. However, when I go to defragment the drive, it is showing some files way out in the free space. I'm plaining to take 60gig from the 115 left for windows.18:18
holsteinjohnny77: maybe whatever that is windows calls swap space?18:19
johnny77These few files way out by themselves will they get deleted if I just go ahead and change the partition?18:19
holsteinpaging file or whatever18:19
holstein?18:19
johnny77holstein: that's possible. I'm just afraid it may be some pictures or music files. something important.18:20
holsteini seem to remember disabling paging or whatever18:20
holsteinand getting a 'better' defrag18:20
holsteinbut, its been years18:21
rokyronnieis there a way to add my password in a command line ? I don't want to ask me every time I run it18:21
holsteinim not sure about if you resize otherwise18:21
holsteini think its better to be cautious anyways18:21
holsteinrokyronnie: run?18:22
holsteinsudo ?18:22
holsteinwhat are you trying to bypass?18:22
johnny77holstein: I bet your right, because when I look at the report it says Pagefile fragmentaion: size: 1.48 gb total fragments 1 - thanks for the idea to turn it off. I'll try that.18:23
rokyronniemy command is sudo fkjdsfsd whatever it is, and after this, he ask me for password18:23
rokyronniethat's what I want to pass, I want to add the pass directly in command, so he never ask me18:23
holsteini think you want to add yourself to the sudoer group??18:23
holsteinlet me look that up...18:23
holsteinpersonally, i appreciate the extra step18:24
holsteinsanity check :)18:24
holsteinthis is relavant18:25

holsteini have better information18:26
rokyronniehmm, I actually want to do that for one command18:26
holsteinsudo adduser USERNAME sudo18:26
rokyronniesay18:26
holsteinthen, you wont be prompted for pass18:26
holsteinyou'll say18:26
holsteinsudo whatever18:27
holsteinand it'll just happen18:27
rokyronnieok :), thank you18:27
rokyronniehow can I do 2 commands in same line, I must add & or something?18:28
holstein its 2 right?18:28
holsteinsudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade18:28
holsteinlike that i think18:28
rokyronnieoh, it keeps ask me for pass18:29
rokyronnie:(18:29
holsteinmight need to logout and back in for that?18:32
rokyronniehm, I don't think you understand exactly what I want to do :).So... I have a command line, which reset my internet connection ( if it gets down ) and I made it like an Icon in Applications - Internet, which opens a terminal and do what it need to do, but, like any command, it ask me for password, and I don't want it to ask me for password every time, that's why I am asking, can I add a command line before it ? which contains the pass or somethin18:36
holsteini see18:36
holsteini would have thought that would do it18:37
holsteini have a couple icons like that18:37
holsteinand i just put my pass in18:37
holsteinyou should be able to script that though18:37
holsteinyou need a python guru18:37
rokyronnieI know, but I wanna see an example :D18:37
holstein:)18:37
holsteinnot even a guru18:38
holsteini bet thats easy18:38
holsteinim just not there yet18:38
rokyronnieI must install python guru?18:38
holsteinnah18:38
holsteini was suggesting finding a python expert18:38
rokyronnieaa18:38
rokyronnieI see18:38
holsteinto show you how to write a little pythong progam18:39
holsteinthat would do that18:39
holsteinrun that command, and put in you pass18:39
holsteinthats do-able18:39
holsteinin theory18:39
rokyronnieif I put my pass it works, it's just fine, but, I would like to add that directly in command line :D, can you ask someone who knows how to do that?18:42
holsteinhmmm18:44
holsteinim not sure who i would ask18:44
