DaskreechKimLaroux: That's pretty bad, SHould be using more RAM01:24
KimLarouxYou're actually the first person who tells me so01:24
KimLarouxeverybody are telling me 4gb is way too much and will never be used01:25
DaskreechKimLaroux: It should be but not in the way that you tink01:25
Daskreechthink01:26
DaskreechThe reason that people use Linux on super computers with multi Terrabytes of RAM is that it will make use of it01:26
KimLarouxAh01:26
KimLarouxcan you explain that to me?01:27
KimLarouxI looked for that information, but never found anything interresting01:27
KimLarouxso I just mounted all my temporary and cache folders into tmpfs01:27
DaskreechWell UNIX does a lot of caching01:34
Daskreechbasically if you have RAM and it's not being used then you wasted your money01:34
Daskreechit's all dumped when it's turned off so as long as the computer is on it should be used.01:34
KimLarouxit's what I believe too01:35
DaskreechIt's way faster than anything except Processor cache so keeping things elsewhere doesn't make sense01:35
DaskreechIf you run somecommand it will copy the whole thing into the RAM and cache it. Next time that you call it it's already in RAM wheeee01:36
Daskreechif you do some command that changes the contents of that command on Disk then the RAM cache is purged until you call the command again01:36
KimLarouxSo how comes the command #free tells me my ram is full while the app on the plasma desktop says it's used at 1.6gb01:37
Daskreechsame thing with contents of files. If parts of a file are accessed often they will just be kept in RAM instead of constantly swapping them out to disk01:37
DaskreechBecause they are counting different things01:37
KimLarouxI concluded that, so what's different?01:38
Daskreechfree is probably just a report of how many pages of RAM are full01:38
KimLarouxwhich one is more reliable?01:38
Daskreechhigher level applications are probably counting only program and program libraries01:38
KimLarouxThat doesn't say much, since pages can be filled with data that's not used anymore...01:39
KimLarouxis unused ram cleared?01:39
Daskreechsince cache is nice but obviously not needed. Linux will just silently drop cache if the RAM is needed for some processing01:39
KimLarouxthat's nice01:39
Daskreechso for most users knowing how much cache you have doesn't make a difference since it will all be thrown away at a moment's notice if the user wants to do something new01:40
KimLarouxSo... Does mounting temporary folders as tmpfs wise or not?01:41
DaskreechKimLaroux: Not routinely. The law of chronology comes into play that if you just used something you are likely to be using it again in the near future. There isn't really a need to agressively clear it out.01:41
DaskreechKimLaroux: long as you don't care about anything in there going away when power fluctuates01:41
KimLarouxI thought about that, it's not a problem01:42
Daskreechand of course if you aren't doing things that will flood your RAM like rendering Toy Story 4 Tux's Tuxedo01:42
KimLarouxI'm just concerned about priority... like you said, Linux can move cached stuff out of ram to make place for computing; what happens if I mount those things there, can it still move them away?01:43
Daskreechif tmpfs is purely in RAM and your processes plus your tmp files size is larger than your RAM amount (and all of your temp storage is in RAM) then it's going to slow down horribly01:43
DaskreechKimLaroux: It moves them to swap01:43
KimLarouxThat's what I thought...01:44
Daskreechwhich is like a normal hard drive formatted partition but structured for robots and threads to read. It'd be nearly impossible for a regular human to figure out what's going on in there01:44
Daskreechbut it's insanely fast (for a hard drive) for a computer01:45
DaskreechStill slower than RAM though01:45
KimLarouxyou mean swap?01:45
Daskreechyes01:45
KimLarouxswap is actually faster than ext4?01:45
Daskreechfor a computer yes01:46
KimLarouxThat's interesting01:46
KimLarouxThanks for the information, Daskreech =)01:52

valorieactivities are designed to get around that07:09
GHHOK how can set it?07:09

valoriewhat activities does for you is allows you to sort those out07:10
valorieand then you switch between activities07:10

valoriephooey, I was hoping there would be a good link there07:10
GHHvalorie, OK how can i do this please?07:11

GHHok07:12

GHHadd activity?07:14
valorielook at that link a bit -- you want to think about how to divide out your 10 to 15 windows into logical groupings07:15
valoriewhich will fit your workflow07:15
valoriesec, I need to tend to my old dog07:16

KOPRikhi, I'm running Lucid and I notice that even when I do nothing there are processes being executed in background... how can I find out what processes are executed?15:07

=== KOPRajs is now known as KOPRik
reisihi there; using 10.10 i just found out why my middle mouse button hasn't worked after the upgrade; suspending kwin desktop effects seems to "free up" the button (not even a relogin required)15:16
KOPRikPici: I know about ps... what I mean is how to find out what process was launched even if it was exited immediatly after launch15:16
KOPRikPici: when I run ps I can see the PID of the ps process... when I run it again  a minute later I can see the PID about 100 higher... that means that there was abou 100 processes launched and exited during the time... I want to know what was executed... or what is executed more than once per second all the time15:19
reisiKOPRik: why would you like to know that?15:25
KOPRikbecause I want to know what's happenning in the background15:26
KOPRikand because I don't think this is good15:26
reisinot sure but i'd think you might be able to do some kernel level process creation tracing...15:26
KOPRiksomething is being launched more than once per second15:26
KOPRikyes15:27
KOPRikany idea how to do that?15:27
reisinope, never had any need; google for 'linux trace process create' or something like that15:27
reisiif your load stays way under 0.10 during these process launches i wouldn't worry; it could be that some background process is launched every for example 0.5 seconds to poll if you have inserted an cd, for example15:28
KOPRikmight be... but it doesn't happen on other systems I have seen15:29
KOPRikmight be faster to simply kill my desktop running apps and see if it stops15:30
reisii'd be amazed if there wasn't a way to trace this15:31

KuKuNutBluesKaj: try vim(proved) instead of vi. . you need to install it though..cheers17:01
DarthFrogvi is an extremely capable text editor.  While not the kitchen sink that emacs is, I find it very efficient to use.  The basic use of vi is easy enough to learn (once you get the concepts of editing modes) but is extremely feature rich for advanced use.  Personally, I've barely scratched the surface of vi and it does all I want it to do.  It is a particular favourite editor for programmers. The most popular version of vi is "vim".17:05
DarthFrogEmacs is an OS masquerading as an editor.  :-)17:05

DarthFrogPasNox: Have you thought about running 32bit Kubuntu instead?19:12
PasNoxDarthFrog: no, why i should if i have a 64bits processor ? :D19:12
DarthFrogTo see if it works better for you. :-)19:12
PasNoxi'm a dev, it's better for me using a 64bits os19:13
skramer_honestly, I don't expect 32bit to work better than 64bits19:13
PasNoxit's easier ( at least for me) to write code that work on 64 & 32 bits19:13
PasNoxusing a 32bits arch is quite tired to support 64bits support19:13
PasNoxand same for me i show no diff using 32 & 64 bits install19:14
PasNoxkopete stop / start -> success.19:14
PasNoxnow the most difficult, try kontact :)19:14

PasNoxI found the problem for dbus with my kde4.621:04
PasNoxit's related to google akonadi resources - it seem they are buggued ( in console i can see akonadi deserializer can't parse them ) and lock dbus21:05
PasNoxso others apps started after it are blocking21:05
PasNoxi removed my google akonadi resources, and now all work fine again :)21:05
