sssHow do I know if I am connected to the internet?07:34
sssI need help connecting to the Internet through a WEP connection08:26
sssanyone here?08:32
ikoniasss: what's up08:52
sssTrying to connect to the Internet08:52
ikoniaok ?08:53
sssTrying to connect wireless to the Internet through WEP using DHCP, afaik08:54
ikoniaon ubuntu server or desktop ?08:54
sssI can connect with Ubuntu Desktop but I don't know how with Ubuntu Server08:54
ikoniaI don't think ubuntu server has the wirless tools installed by default, and in honesty I don't know if all of them are available on ubuntu server (wirless network card modules I mean)08:55
ikoniasss: how far along are you ?08:55
AtomicSparkCan we please give a warning not to use tasksel on Ubuntu Server? I removed email and print server options and it pretty much just uninstalled half my server packages. Things that weren't even related. Irssi, ufw, etc.08:55
ikoniaAtomicSpark: I've never seen that, I'd log a bug for that quite urgently08:56
sssI am trying to find a command that accept the hex digits code for the wireless network08:56
AtomicSparkI was seeing the packages preparing to be remove and I was C-cing like crazy. :\08:56
ikoniayou just said that in #ubuntu-offtopic08:57
AtomicSparkYes.08:57
ikoniaso I'd log a bug for it08:57
sssAtomicSpark, https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Tasksel says "WARNING: Use tasksel only to install tasks, never to remove any! According to https://launchpad.net/bugs/574287 it will remove each package in the list of that task (and possibly render your system unusable)."08:57
uvirtbotLaunchpad bug 574287 in tasksel "tasksel: forcefully removes packages when tasks overlap" [Undecided,Confirmed]08:57
AtomicSparksss: Thank you08:57
ikonialooks like a valid bug, add your stuff to it if you think it helps08:58
sssI don't have iwconfig command in Ubuntu Server, so I do think it doesn't support wireless connections by default08:58
ikoniasss: you'll need the wireless-tools package for that08:59
sssHow do I get the package without Internet connection? Can I install them with a USB flash disk?08:59
ikoniawhy are you doing this with ubuntu server if it works on ubuntu desktop out of the box ?09:00
ikoniawould it not be easier to use the desktop version that supports wirless out of the box /09:00
sssI installed Ubuntu Server only for experimenting with it09:00
ikoniaok, so it's the same OS as the desktop but with a few packages modified for enterprise server use, and a few packages removed09:01
ikoniais there something specific in the server version you want/need/want to try09:01
sssLAMP, Java, mail(?)09:01
ikoniasss: that's all available on ubuntu desktop09:02
ikoniayou don't neve the ubuntu server install for that09:02
AtomicSparkikonia: Since it happens with all tasks, not sure adding which options I selected would help and I didn't have a "currently installed" package list handy. Oh well, been meaning to start fresh anyways. :\09:02
sssAny way I can add packages without Internet connection?09:03
ikoniasss: yes, but why ? it's easier to use the desktop version as it's geared up for desktop hardware use out of the box09:03
AtomicSparkYou'd have to have the alt cd or dvd handy and it's only packages from main.09:03
ikoniasss: why make it hard on yourself as the chances are you're going to need more packages such as wifi card kernel modules,09:04
ikoniathe desktop and server install can do the same physical tasks, so why not just use the version that will work best for your hardware and needs09:04
sssDoes the Ubuntu Server Disk include the tasks packages or does it install them from the Internet?09:04
ikoniasss: you need to install them from the internet09:05
sssHow do I install LAMP in Ubuntu Desktop (finally convinced me... lol)09:05
AtomicSparkHmm. I'm curious if you could apt-cd the server cd now.09:05
ikoniasss: you install ubuntu desktop, then either use tasksel or install php/mysql/apache09:06
ikoniaAtomicSpark: I'm not %100 I believe you can09:06
ikoniaAtomicSpark: it should work the same as the desktop for the "main" packages09:06
AtomicSparkYeah I was thinking it should be the same as the Alt CD.09:06
sssikonia: I am now installing tasksel on Ubuntu Desktop09:07
ikoniaok, well guess we are done here09:07
AtomicSparkTasksel sure does have a lot of packages listed for lamp.09:07
sss"tasksel install lamp"?09:08
AtomicSparklamp-server09:08
ssssudo tasksel install lamp-server09:09
sssok, It is now installing.09:09
sssWhere will it be installed?09:09
AtomicSparksss: You won't have a GUI tool for it.09:10
AtomicSparkYou put web stuffs in /var/www/09:10
AtomicSparkYou access the database either by using a GUI utility or phpmyadmin09:10
AtomicSparkor command line if you're brave! :P09:11
ikoniaor simply the "mysql" command09:11
AtomicSparkYes.09:11
sssHow do I host PHP website? simply put files in /ver/www/ ?09:11
AtomicSparkMostly, yes.09:12
ikoniasss: have you read https://help.ubuntu.com09:12
AtomicSpark(the server guide is awesome)09:12
ikoniasss: it's a good guide to the basics of ubuntu and how it works09:12
sssok. thanks09:12
sssI installed LAMP. It shows HTML files correctly, but do not process PHP files09:28
ikoniasss: have you read the document you where given09:30
ikoniasss: you may want to take this to #ubuntu now that you are using the desktop version09:30

Ztripezis there anyway to change a devies uuid? i have 6 drives.. each crypted with luks and the mapped crypted devices are lvm:ed to one huge crypted parttion.. howver.. one of my sata cabels broke (for some strange reason) so i changed it.. all of sudden 2 of my crypted devices have the same uuid and the lvm halts (missing 1 disk). i know what the uuid  the luksdevice should have.. is there any way i can set the uuid to the correct one?11:33

jeeves_mossahh, ok, thanks17:32
jeeves_mossiceflatline, when using a variable, you first use $<var name> = var, then in your scrip, you just use $<var name> wherever you want the var to go?17:34
hilarieHello, I am trying to try out ubuntu server edition, and I am quite new at this stuff, I followed the directions on http://www.webxpert.ro/andrei/2010/09/07/install-webmin-on-ubuntu-server-or-desktop-10-10-maverick-meerka/ to install webmin, and when I try to connect to my Virtual box, either by the hostename outputted from from the install https//:friendlyhostname:1000 or https://<ifconfigIP>:1000, it simply times out17:38
iceflatlinejeeves_moss: it's <varname> = <var>, then you call it in the script use $varname17:39
iceflatlineexample: USER=iceflatline, then $USER in the script.17:42
