rufsketch1guys, I'm at wits end02:04
rufsketch1I need help02:04

rufsketch1and now kdenetwork manager won't list any wireless networks in the plasma widget02:05
rufsketch1or bother to connect02:05
rufsketch1The same update on my laptop didn't result in any such problem02:05
rufsketch1she's using ath5k drivers from what I can gather02:05
jcgssorry rufsketch1, this isn't msn, can you type everything as one line pls02:05
rufsketch1jcgs: ah, sorry.02:06
jcgsrufsketch1: thanks :) it gets confusing otherwise, and things disappear off the screen too quickly02:06
ttahe he he02:07
ttayou are rigth you know02:07
rufsketch1So can anyone help?02:08
jcgstta: I've found "keyboard settings" but there doesn't seem to be much enlightening in there except "Shift with numeric keypad works as in ms windows" but i don't have a numeric keypad because i'm on a laptop :(02:08
jcgsrufsketch1: this may not be what you want to hear, but the way i solved my general wireless malaise was to do a clean install02:10
rufsketch1jcgs: that is very much not what I want to hear.02:10
ttawhich laptop02:10
ttathe mark02:10
jcgsrufsktech1: can you just remove the ppas and downgrade? presumably you've already tried that02:11
aleiexhi, anyone knows how to restrat panel on kubuntu 10-10?02:11
jcgstta: toshiba satellite l300, but i'm not sure that's relevant, is it?02:12
rufsketch1jcgs: sort of tried it02:12
ttano but i am cofuse  what is your os02:12
jcgsaleiex: could you elaborate a little bit, what do you mean by "restart panel"?02:12
rufsketch1I tried to manually remove the ppas but it didn't seem to care02:12
jcgstta: kubuntu 10.1002:12
rufsketch1is there a command to remove the ppas?02:13
jcgsrufsketch1: have you looked for them in the software sources are of the add/remove software in system settings?02:14
rufsketch1jcgs: yes, that's the thing that didn't work. Which is why I was wondering if there was a command02:14
jcgsrufsketch1: try poking around in /etc/apt/sources.list and /etc/apt/sources.list.d/* you'll have to remove them in a text editor02:16
jcgsrufsketch1: you could do: kdesudo kate /etc/apt/sources.list02:17
ttasome command in windows will not in kubuntu so if you are not able to change your command with your keyboard try the visual keyboardof kubuntu02:17
jcgstta: that's really slow though, I'm sure there must be a way to do this, someone must have thought of it, surely02:18
jcgstta: I think I've got it, setting "compose key position" to "right alt" has worked a charm :)02:23
jcgstta: actually, I've decided that "menu" is a better choice, since typing euro works as normal :)02:26
ttajcgs:excuse me for that interruption i have some problem with my gsm modem02:26
jcgstta: no worries :)02:26
jcgssorry chaps, I've got to get up early in the morning (well early for lazy students, anyway) see you soon :)02:27

MayankHello, I want to set user restrictions for particular user or group of users, how can i do this with command line? any list of commands?13:43
james147Mayank: exactly what restrictions?13:43
Mayankjames147:like for instance i do not want childUserA to have access to terminal, but I want ParentUserA to have access to terminal13:44
Mayankjames147: Or like, I do not want childUserA to change or add desktop icons, but I want that there is no such restriction for ParentUserA13:47
* james147 dosent see the need for those type of restrictions.... and knows they are not easy to do.... 13:47
Mayankjames147: I have to set kubuntu machines for children below 7th grade, so i need to do that. any direction for the same?13:49

ubottutatie: Samba is the way to cooperate with Windows environments. Links with more info: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MountWindowsSharesPermanently and https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/serverguide/C/windows-networking.html - Samba can be administered via the web with SWAT.16:20

BluesKajtatie, well then you have a problem, gotta have the pw16:27
james147Mayank: "man useradd"16:27
genii-aroundMayank: In /etc/skel usually is the template of what goes in a user's home directory16:27
james147(adduser is a wrapper for useradd16:28
tatiewhy can't i connect from windows to Linux? i mean most servers in this world run linux right? and besides it worked nicely before in Ubuntu. but now i made a fresh install Kubuntu this time and i can't get it to work.16:28
Mayankjames147: let me try.16:29
Mayankgenii-around: ok! thanks, but if i edit. will all the users that are added will have the same things in their home directory? can it be user or group specific?16:30
genii-aroundMayank: It's just a template. When you add a user, the stuff in their home dir becomes owned by them, whatever the ownerships of stuff in the /etc/skel are16:31
james147Mayank: man useradd  -- there is an option to specify the skel directory, so you can copy the exisitng one for each group and edit them individually16:31
BluesKajtatie, what client were you using before to connect from windows?16:32
BluesKajtatie, there's putty ssh client and tightvnc16:33
tatiesamba client on Ubuntu. on Windows it was Total commander16:33
tatiei just noticed that when i click configure share nothing shows to be configured.16:33

* BluesKaj takes a break17:55
CuBe0wLachondria, no, I can ping the router17:55
achondriaCuBeOwl: hmmm, if you can ping the router, then i would say it's something weird with the router. You have rebooted the router?17:57
CuBe0wLachondria, I can't access the router17:58
CuBe0wLit's not mine, college wireless17:59
CuBe0wLthe password is ok, I've used it numerous times, even today17:59
=== sean is now known as Guest43843
BluesKajCuBe0wL, open /etc/resolv.conf, nameserver will probly have the router IP18:00
achondriaCuBeOwl: Well, i have seen driver issues cause some weird problems like being able to connect but not get traffic18:00
achondriaCuBeOwl: BlueKaj makes a good point perhpas DNS issue18:01
CuBe0wLcan't be, because my nokia 5800 connects and uses the router easily18:02
achondriaCuBeOwl: try pinging an ip like this one .. 72.30.2.4318:02
CuBe0wLdestination net unreachable18:03
BluesKajCuBe0wL, achondria , especially if the connection worked previously, then the namserver IP is the actual LAN router IP18:03
BluesKajachondria, . not necessarily a dns prob18:04
sedrik_Hi all =)18:06
puneethi sedrik18:08
achondriaBluesKaj: You think the PC is expecting the router to provide DNS but the router isn't set up to do so?18:09
r41_where has the folderview plasmoid gone?18:13
puneet:))18:15
BluesKajachondria, most routers use the auto-dns setting , but a college campus area network is probly has totally different settings , but I can't be sure18:17
achondriaBluesKaj: would you happen to know if there is a kubuntu kernel (precompiled) that supports more than 3 GB of ram?18:21
james147achondria: the 64bit version does :)18:22
james147achondria: also, http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/ubuntu-linux-4gb-ram-limitation-solution/18:22
achondriajames147: Thanks so much, i am using 64bit, but I'll check out the details when I get that PC up and running later.18:25
* BluesKaj suffers with 32bit & 3G RAM :)18:27
james147achondria: ^^ if your using 64bit then you shouldnt have a problem with max ram18:27
BluesKajguess i could install the 64 bit OS , but I'm afraid of flash probs18:28
achondriajames147: according to the info you posted, I agree, but I do remember checking it with free yesterday and having it come up with something like 3.1GB physical ( i have 4GB installed)18:30
james147achondria: and your sure you ahve the 64bit version insalled?18:30
james147achondria: uname -m   should tell you18:31
achondriajames147: yeah, I had to even dl 64bit apps to replace the ones I had saved18:31
james147achondria: then check your bios, make sure that reports the correct ammount18:32
achondriajames147: it does :( 4028 or something like that18:33
james147then thats weird18:33
james147achondria: what does uname -m say?18:33
achondriajames147: i will have to reboot to get into it (im running a 32bit live cd right now) back in a bit. Thanks again.18:34
james147BluesKaj: I havnt had any problems with flash on 64bit ^^ well, anymore then the usual flash problems of flash being flash :)18:35

slipperHello. I'm trying to install Kubuntu on my hard drive array. I have /dev/md0 as software RAID 5 on / , /dev/md1 as software RAID 1 on /boot, and /dev/md2 as RAID 1 swap space. The install itself seems to be fine, because I can assemble root and see the file system - same goes for /boot19:02
slipperGrub is what's giving me trouble. It boots into a recovery shell.19:03
slipperI installed it to /dev/sda, default options. What am I missing?19:04
BluesKaj!raid19:08
ubottuTips and tricks for RAID and LVM can be found on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SoftwareRAID and http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/LVM-HOWTO - For software RAID, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FakeRaidHowto19:08
* james147 isnt sure if grub knows about software raids....19:12
slipperFrom what I read, it can handle RAID 119:13
Mayankwhen i enter the command - useradd -m someuser, it creates a desktop folder for the user by default in one machine but not on the other, any reason?19:14
james147Mayank: how are you sharing users between machines?19:16
Mayankjames147: I am not sharing users, just entering the same command in two different machines19:17
Mayankjames147: i just want the desktop folder to be there by default19:18
james147Mayank: you really should use somehting like LDAP for multiple users on multiple computers19:18
james147Mayank: its creating the users home though? if so is the Desktop folder in the /etc/skel?19:18
Mayankjames147: yes the skel folder is empty. Should i just add a Desktop folder there?19:20
james147Mayank: if you want it created then yet (and it shouldnt be empty, there should be some hidden files in it)19:21
james147yes ^^19:21
Mayankjames147: yes, .profile is the relevant one?19:22
slipperOkay, it looks like the FakeRAID howto has GRUB info19:23
slipperconfusing, since I'm not really using dmarid :p19:23
Mayankjames147: thanks again :)19:23
desuThe Desktop directory is supposed to be created by the Desktop environment IIRC19:24
desuKDE, GNOME, XFCE etc.19:24
desuOn the first run.19:24
Mayankdesu: yes but i want to chmod 755 it19:27
Mayankfor the LiveCD customization19:27
desuAh, alright..19:27
desuMayank, are all the computers on network?19:28
Mayankdesu: yes they will be19:29
Mayankdesu: but we have different departments, so making one for network run19:29
Mayankat 5-6 places19:29
desuWhy not create one single shared /home directory and authenticate against LDAP?19:29
Mayankdesu: because different departments are not connected with each other19:53
desuMayank, but all systems within the same department are interconnected, right?19:53
Mayankand they cannot be connected to one central LDAP server due to resource problems19:54
desuYou can use a desktop machine as an LDAP server19:54
desuI doubt the load would be high enough to bring that system down to its knees19:54
Mayankdesu: yes they are, and yes we can use it . I was talking about the networking part between the departments19:55
Mayankand not intradepartment19:55
desuMayank, it's half past one in the morning. You should perhaps stop working now :P19:56
Mayankdesu: aha! yes! you should too! just trying to install .air app through the terminal19:57
desu.air?19:57
Mayankbuilt on adobe air19:57
desuOh, ahhh...19:57
